Alvin L. Norris
Former Hotchkiss Resident

WARE, Mass. - Former Hotchkiss resident, Alvin L. Norris, age 91, a resident of Ware, Mass., since 1990, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his home in Ware.
Born in Alton, Kan., on Aug. 10, 1909, Alvin L. Norris was the son of Charles E. Norris and May (Gregory) Norris. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in the State of Kansas.
In September of 1939, Alvin married Maxine Edwards in Hotchkiss, CO. They were the parents of two children and had shared 61 wonderful years together this year in September.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the Norris family lived in Hotchkiss and then lived in Boulder, relocating to Loveland where they lived from 1982 until 1990. They then moved to Ware, Mass., where Alvin made his home until the time of his death.
While living in Hotchkiss Alvin owned the Gambles Store, then worked as a salesman for Montgomery Ward in Boulder. He retired in 1976 from the chemistry department at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Survivors very grateful to share Alvin's life include his wife, Maxine L. Norris, of Ware, Mass.; one son, Charles E. Norris, of Monson, Mass.; one daughter, Phyllis Chabot, also of Ware, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister-in-law, Evelyn and husband Dr. Woodrow Brown, of Hotchkiss.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and May Norris.
Funeral Services in honor of Alvin's life will be officiated on Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel at Hotchkiss.
Interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.
Martha Alice Clawson
Airport Manager
July 28, 1939 - Nov. 3, 2000
PAONIA - Martha Alice Clawson, age 61, an airport manager and resident of Paonia for 23 years, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at her home in Paonia.
Martha Alice Thompson, the daughter of Wilson Thompson and Katherine (Robinson) Thompson, was born on July 28, 1939, in Center Township, Morgan County, Ohio. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in the State of Ohio.
On Aug. 2, 1954, Martha was united in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Richard Clawson in Marysville, W.Va. They were the parents of eight children and had shared 46 rich and wonderful years The Clawson family lived in Riverton, Wyo., before moving to Paonia 23 years ago.
Martha loved and delighted in her family, antiques, gardening, and sewing.
Survivors so very grateful to share her life include her husband, Richard Clawson, of Paonia; five sons: Gordon Clawson and wife Angela, of Malta, Ohio; John Clawson and wife Chana, of Paonia; Rick G. Clawson, of Hoehne; Michael Clawson, of Paonia; Nathan Clawson and wife Ericia, Crawford; and two daughters: Sheila Clawson, of Chicago, Ill.; and Brenda Clawson, of Colorado Springs.
Martha was the proud and loving grandmother of 17 precious grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Charles Thompson and wife Renee, of Woodstock, Conn.; James Thompson and wife Janet, of Malta, Ohio; and three sisters: Helen Haley, of Cleveland, Ohio; Ella and husband Frank McPeak, of Zanesville, Ohio; and Joan Moore, of Fairfield, Conn.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jeff Clawson; three sisters; and one brother.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Martha's life will be officiated by Pastor Robert Barker on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery

Edyth E. Burgess
Former Montrose Resident
June 11, 1912 - Oct. 24, 2000
REDLANDS, Calif. - Former Montrose resident, Edyth E. Burgess, age 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, following complications from a long illness.
A resident of Redlands, Calif., since 1949, Edyth E. Faussone was born in Montrose, Colo., on June 11, 1912. Her father, Louis P. Faussone, was part of a prosperous farming family of brothers who all came from Turin, Italy, to southwestern Colorado between 1898 and 1906. Her mother, Teresa, became a well-known exhibitor at yearly floral shows in Montrose.
Upon graduating from Montrose County High School, Edyth worked as the assistant to the manager of the Montrose Flour Milling Company. In 1934, she married Eugene F. Burgess, a groceryman.
Upon America's entry into World War II, Eugene joined the United States Navy and sold his grocery business in Montrose.
Following his return from the war, and having experienced the climate of southern California while stationed at San Diego's naval base, the Burgesses heard of a grocery business opportunity in Redlands, Calif.
Arriving in Redlands, Calif., in 1949, the Burgesses opened up Burgess and White where Edyth was responsible for running the store's business office.
Her community activity included many organizations in Redlands. Since 1950, Edyth spent time every year in Montrose ranging from three weeks to four months.
Survivors very grateful to share Edyth's life include one son, Larry, of Redlands, Calif.; and two brothers: Roy B. and Louis F. Faussone, both of Montrose.

Thelma Rogers Almgren
A Rancher at Heart
Nov. 2, 1919 - April 26, 2001
MONTROSE - Thelma Rogers Almgren, age 81, of Montrose, died after a lengthy illness Thursday morning, April 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Thelma Rogers, the oldest of three children, was born on Nov. 2, 1919, in Fairplay, Colo., the daughter of Silas and Gertrude Rogers.
On Sept. 23, 1938, Thelma was united in marriage with the love of her life, Louis Almgren, on her father's ranch south of Fairplay, Colo. She spent her early life ranching with her husband Louis in Fairplay where they raised their two children.
Following Louis' death, the family moved to Meeker where Thelma worked at the Meeker Hospital. Later, she found it necessary to move to Lakewood to care for her parents. In 1978, she moved to Montrose where she worked at the San Juan Living Center and then at Tina's Guest Home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Montrose Rebekah Lodge.
Thelma was a rancher at heart. She spent her childhood and early adulthood on the back of a horse, and loved ranch work. She also enjoyed cooking, canning, baking - was famous for her zucchini bread and oatmeal raisin cookies - gardening, and her work. Thelma always put others first. As much as her family loved her, she definitely returned that same love to them. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Thelma's life include two sons: Roger Almgren, of Montrose; and John Almgren and wife Sandra, of Kremmling.
She was the proud and loving grandmother of five precious grandsons: John Almgren and wife Jill, of Grand Junction; Robert Almgren, of Brighton; Silas Almgren, of Montrose; Gary Almgren and wife Heather, of Kremmling; Glen Almgren, of Johnstown; and three great-grandchildren: Sydney and Silas Almgren, of Kremmling; and Kate Almgren, of Grand Junction.
Other family survivors include one brother, Alan Rogers and wife Marge, of Meeker.
Along with her husband, Louis Almgren; and both of her parents, Thelma was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Rogers Prather.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Thelma's life will be officiated on Monday, April 30, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
Immediately following the service, interment will be held in the Fairplay Cemetery
at Fairplay, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home/Crematory & Grand View Cemetery

Myrtle 'Betty' Torrey
Former Olathe Rancher, Farmer
Feb. 12, 1907 - April 25, 2001
DELTA - Myrtle "Betty" Greer, the daughter of George and Edna (Manyhouse) Greer, was born on Feb. 12, 1907, in Dustin, Okla. She died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in the Willow Tree Care Center at Delta at the age of 94.
In 1918, Betty moved with her family to the Olathe area where she received her education from the Olathe schools and played basketball for Olathe High School.
On Feb. 7, 1931, Betty was united in marriage with the love of her life, Chester Torrey, at Moab, Utah. The couple farmed and ranched on California Mesa near Delta until Chester's death in 1987. Following her husband's death, Betty moved to Delta where she remained until the time of her own death.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Delta.
Among the many loves in Betty's life that brought her happiness and enjoyment included crocheting, knitting, gardening, fishing, and traveling.
Surviving family members grateful to share Betty's life include one sister, Virginia Schlappe, of Delta; four nephews: Richard Brown, of Olathe; Harry Schlappe, of Delta; Russel Schlappe, of Cory; Robert Schlappe, of Fort Worth, Texas; two nieces: Ruth Ann Greer, of Roseville, Calif.; and Kay Schlappe, of Clarion, Pa.
Betty was the adopted grandmother of Barbara Brown, Susan Ubell, and Sheila Reading.
In addition to both of her parents and her husband, Betty was also preceded in death by two brothers: Harry and Armin Greer.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Betty's life will be officiated on Monday, April 30, at 9:30 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
at Montrose.

Ernest Basil Trujillo
World War II Vet/Miner
Oct. 3, 1927 - April 21, 2001
OURAY - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Ernest Basil Trujillo, age 73, of Ouray, died peacefully Saturday evening, April 21, 2001, in his home at Ouray.
Ernest Basil Trujillo was born on Oct. 3, 1927, in Chamita, N.M., the son of Rubel and Gregorita Trujillo. The family relocated in the Riverside/Uncompahgre area near Montrose when Ernest was an infant and shortly thereafter purchased a farm on California Mesa near Olathe where they raised sheep. Ernest attended Stone School.
During World War II, he enlisted in the 3704th United States Army Air Force Base Unit from which he was honorably discharged as a private on June 12, 1946. He subsequently enlisted the following day in the regular Army where he was assigned as a radio operator. Ernest proudly served in Iwo Jima and Guam and was honorably discharged as a corporal on July 31, 1947.
On Jan. 21, 1948, Ernest was united in marriage with the love of his life, Lydia Jaramillo, for a lifetime partnership, in Montrose, Colo. Their lives together were enriched when they became the parents of seven children. Ernest and Lydia had the joy of celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary this year in January.
Ernest worked at the local mines for most of his adult life including nearly 28 years at the Idarado Mine. He retired when the mine suspended normal operations in November of 1978, and reportedly had the privilege of drilling the last hole.
Ernest and his family made their home in what was originally the Munn Brother Sampling Works (assay office) in Ouray which was built in the 1800s. With the help of friends and relatives he built a significant addition to the home in 1966.
He served the Ouray community as an Ouray City Councilman and was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 04041, serving as treasurer at one time. For many years he enjoyed participating in the organizations annual Huck Finn Day. Ernest was also a member of the United Mine Workers Association.
Ernest was an avid outdoorsman who hunted and fished during his lifetime throughout Southwestern Colorado. Other hobbies he greatly enjoyed included working in his yard, carpentry, and electronics. For many years he repaired TVs, radios, etc., charging only for required parts and not labor. His favorite pastime was reading about historical events, mining, railroading, geology, and geography.
The absolute pride and joy of Ernest's life were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved living in Ouray and couldn't stand being away even for a day. Therefore, he will be laid to eternal rest at the Cedar Hill Cemetery
in the shadow of the mountains he loved.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Ernest's life include his wife, Lydia Trujillo, of Ouray; four beloved daughters: Katherine Trujillo-Miron and husband Carlos Miron, of Denver; Karin and husband Ron Sanchez, of Delta; Tess and husband Dave Martinez, of Montrose; Marisa and husband Robert Salvo, of Ignacio; and two beloved sons: Adam Trujillo and wife Lori, of Ouray; and E.J. Trujillo and wife Melissa, of Montrose.
Ernest was the proud and loving grandfather of 14 precious grandchildren: Leah and Carlitos Miron; Abraham and Damond Sanchez; Miranda and Felina Martinez; Anthony and Eric Salvo; Haley, Malori and Tanner Trujillo; triplets: Mariah, Jeremy and Kaela Trujillo; and five great-grandchildren: Christian, Andre', Jasmine, Sierra, and Alexia Sanchez.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Sam Trujillo and wife Rebecca, of Ouray; Pat Trujillo and wife Joan, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and three sisters: Bernice and husband Ross Gallegos; Beatrice Ulibarri, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Clara and husband Henry Martinez, of Price, Utah.
Ernest was preceded in death by both of his parents; one infant daughter, Patricia Geraldine Trujillo; and three brothers: John Trujillo, Dennis Trujillo, and Rubel Trujillo Jr.
Rosary and visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at St. Daniel's Catholic Church in Ouray.
Funeral Mass in loving remembrance of Ernest's life will be officiated by The Rev. Nathaneal Foshage on Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Daniel's Catholic Church in Ouray.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Ouray.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Ernest Trujillo, may be made to St. Daniel's Catholic Church or the Altar and Rosary Society at the church.

Jack G. Hamlett
Hospital/Nursing Home Administrator
July 22, 1930 - April 23, 2001
DELTA - Jack G. Hamlett, age 70, a resident of Delta since 1987, died Monday, April 23, 2001, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Born on July 22, 1930, in Big Springs, Texas, Jack G. Hamlett was the son of Hugh Hamlet and Catherine (Cole) Hamlett. He was raised in Santa Fe, N.M., where he graduated from the Santa Fe High School in 1948, and grew to adulthood.
Jack proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1950.
He attended the University of Minnesota and was employed as a hospital/nursing home administrator.
On Oct. 8, 1971, Jack was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Gretchen Brodersen, at Littleton, Colo. Jack and Gretchen were privileged to share 29 wonderful years of marriage last year in October.
He lived in several states during his lifetime, resided in Littleton for eight years and in 1987 Jack and Gretchen established their home in Delta where they remained until the time of Jack's death.
Special interests and hobbies Jack especially loved and enjoyed were fly fishing and wood carving.
Surviving family members grateful to share Jack's life include his wife, Gretchen Hamlett, of Delta; one son, Bruce Hamlett, of Bremerton, Wash.; one daughter, Brenda and husband Mark Thomas, of Memphis, Tenn.; three precious grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Other family members include one sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Hamlett; one nephew, James Hamlett; and four nieces: Eileen; Ann Carolyn; Mary Therese; and Catherine, all of Albuquerque, N.M.
Jack was preceded in death by both of his parents; one brother, Hugh Hamlett Jr.; and one nephew, Bill Hamlett.
No service is planned at this time.

Dewey Nelle Classi
A Fantastic Hostess

CEDAREDGE - Longtime Brewster, Kan. resident and businesswoman, Dewey Nelle Classi, age 82, of Cedaredge, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 23, 2001, at Heidi's Chateau in Montrose.
Dewey Nelle Brown, the daughter of Clair and Freeda (Eckles) Brown, was born on Sept. 29, 1918, at McDonald, Kan. She spent her childhood years in Kansas and received her high school education in Brewster, Kan., where she grew to adulthood.
On May 20, 1939, Dewey Nelle was joined in marriage with Joseph Domnick Classi in Los Angeles, Calif. Their lives together were blessed with three children. Dewey Nelle and Joe owned and operated Classi Grocery in Brewster, Kan., for many years. They shared 34 years of marriage before Joe's death on March 20, 1974.
In May 2000, Dewey Nelle moved from Brewster, Kan. to Cedaredge to be closer to her family. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Heidi's Chateau, a care center, in Montrose.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Brewster, Kan., and belonged to a bridge club, a craft club, and a sorority.
Dewey Nelle loved playing bridge, gardening, and cooking. She will be fondly remember for being such a fantastic hostess and her great love for her pets.
Survivors very grateful to share Dewey Nelle's life include two sons: Jerry J. Classi and wife Lavon, of Ridgway; Anthony C. "Tony" Classi, of Laramie, Wyo.; one daughter, Teri N. and husband Ben Baker, of New Jersey; six precious grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with one on the way.
Other family survivors include one sister, Leslie Sullivan, of Texas.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Joe, Dewey Nell was also preceded in death by one brother.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Dewey Nelle's life will be officiated on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of the Cross in Cedaredge. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Inurnment will be held before the service in Kansas at 9:30 a.m., Central time, on Friday, Feb. 2, in the Brewster Cemetery
at Brewster, Kan.
A concluding Memorial Service will follow inurnment on Friday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., Central time, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brewster, Kan. The service will conclude at the church.
