HOTCHKISS - Ivan Earl McDaniel, age 75, died on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2000 in the Integrated Health Service of Delta of natural causes.
Ivan Earl McDaniel, the son of Harry McDaniel and Ethel Lynn McDaniel, was born on July 8, 1925 in Read, Colo. He spent his childhood and attended high school at Read.
Ivan married Ethel Louise Hoffman on Oct. 21, 1943 at Major Creek, Colo. She preceded Ivan in death on Nov. 20, 1998 in Delta, Colo.
He had been employed as a rancher and logger and had lived in Hotchkiss since 1980.
Ivan was a member of the Church of God in Hotchkiss and enjoyed horses and fishing.
He is survived by one son, Eldon McDaniel and wife Debbie of Hotchkiss; one daughter Iva and husband Jack Thomas of Spring Creek, Nev.; and four grandchildren, Thomas and Tim McDaniel, Paul McDaniel and Connie Lynch.
Ivan is also survived by one sister, Mary Ely of Florida.
In addition to his wife, Ethel, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Howard McDaniel, and a sister Hazel Everson.
Funeral services to honor the life of Ivan McDaniel will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear, Colo. Pastor James Jesser will officate.
Internment will be held at the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss.

DRIGGS, Idaho - Billy Jackson, 42, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at his home in Driggs, Idaho, following back surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born Nov. 22, 1957, in Montrose, Colo., to James and Peggy (Castle) Jackson.
He married Jill Sphoon on Feb. 19, 1985, in Lake Tahoe, Calif. He owned the Best Western and Super 8 motels in Driggs, and the Montana Inn in Forsyth, Mont.
Billy was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and very active in the community. He was the freestyle wrestling coach and loved being involved with the kids.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, riding horses and especially being with his family.
Billy's mother preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife Jill; two sons: Willard, age 14, and Clayton, age 10; two daughters: Whitney, age 12, and Carly, age 6, of Driggs. Billy is also survived by his father, James Jackson, of Olathe, Colo.; two sisters: Peggy and her husband Jack Cunningham, of Lakewood, Colo.; Linda and her husband Wayne Vanderpool, of Montrose, Colo.
Funeral services, with standing room only, were held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Driggs LDS Stake Center with Pastor Lance Eisele of the Teton Valley Community Bible Church officiating. Burial was held in the Driggs Cemetery
under the direction of the Valley Mortuary in Driggs, Idaho.
Billy was the best father, husband, brother, son, uncle and friend. He had a very happy outlook on life.

Gary Lloyd Sparkman

HOTCHKISS - A highly respected member in the Hotchkiss community, Gary Lloyd Sparkman, age 61, a resident of Hotchkiss for 34 years, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Gary Lloyd Sparkman, the son of Kenneth Sparkman and Carleen (Bond) Sparkman, was born on April 22, 1939, in Iola, Kan. He spent his childhood in Muskogee, Okla., graduated from the Durango High School with the class of 1958, and continued his education at Colorado College in Colorado Springs and Western State College in Gunnison. Gary earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's degree.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
On Dec. 22, 1962, Gary was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Zona Whitsitt in Del Norte, Colo. They were the parents of three children and had shared 37 rich and wonderful years together at the time of Gary's death.
Gary and his family moved from Del Norte to Hotchkiss 34 years ago where Gary was employed as a high school science teacher in Hotchkiss, then worked as a high school counselor in Paonia for a period of time before returning to Hotchkiss where he taught computers and science in the Hotchkiss Middle School. He was also in charge of the first technology lab at Hotchkiss Middle School.
Gary was employed as a coach for football and baseball at the high school level and he spent the last three years of his life as an assistant baseball coach in Paonia.
He was an former Hotchkiss Mayor and served as a municipal court judge.
Gary was an active member of the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church, serving on several committees for the church.
Gary was a sports enthusiast and runner, who greatly loved and enjoyed golf, wood working, and stained glass.
He was a dependable and loving son, husband and father. He has definitely left this world a better place because he was here and all who knew and loved him know today just how lucky they were to have Gary touch their lives. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors so very grateful to share Gary's life include his wife, Zona Sparkman, of Hotchkiss; one son, Randy Sparkman, of Greeley; two daughters: Garyn Flinn, of Northglenn; Kimberly Sparkman, of Denver; and one precious grandchild.
Other family survivors include his mother, Carleen Sparkman, of Northglenn; and one sister, Judi Turnell, of Delta.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Sparkman.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Gary's life will be officiated by The Rev. Judi Taylor on Monday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Hotchkiss United Methodist Church. The service will conclude at the church.

Stella Josephine Shaw

HOTCHKISS - Stella Josephine Shaw, age 90, a homemaker and resident of Hotchkiss since 1972, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in Horizons Care Center at Eckert.
Stella Josephine Loyd was born on July 22, 1910, in Kansas, the daughter of William P. Loyd and Mary (Holsey) Loyd. She spent her childhood, received her education and grew to adulthood in Phillipsburg, Kan., and Napanee, Neb.
Stella was married on Feb. 22, 1929, in Raton, N.M., to Melvin L. Shaw, who preceded her in death on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1985, in Delta.
She lived in Montrose and Brush, Colo., before moving to Show Low, Ariz. In 1972, Stella moved from Arizona to Hotchkiss where she made her home until the time of her death.
She enjoyed housekeeping, fishing, and gardening - both flowers and vegetables.
Survivors so very grateful to share Stella's life include one son, William Shaw, of Hotchkiss; two precious grandsons: William L. Shaw and James Allen Shaw, both of San Diego, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren: Haley Shaw, Karlly Shaw, and Kelsey Shaw, also all of San Diego, Calif.
Along with her parents and husband, Stella was also preceded in death by one daughter; and one grandson, Richard Shaw.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Stella's life will be officiated by James Gall on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss.

DELTA - Debbie Ryan, age 44, of Delta, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Debbie Shea, the daughter of Jim and Addie (Hendricks) Shea, was born on Nov. 14, 1955, in Montrose, Colo. She spent her 44 years of life in Delta, graduating from the Delta High School in 1973.
On Aug. 30, 1974, she was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Marvin Ryan in Delta. Debbie and Marvin had shared 26 rich and wonderful years together this year in August.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.
Debbie was devoted to and greatly loved by her family. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed fishing, gambling, and loved all animals.
All who knew and loved Debbie know just how fortunate they were to have her touch their lives and leave her footprints, love, and cherished memories in their hearts. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors so very grateful to have shared Debbie's life include her husband, Marvin Ryan; one son, Mitchell Ryan; one daughter, Michelle Love and Brandon; and two precious grandchildren: Brett and Mariah, all of Delta.
Other family survivors include her father, Jim Shea and fiancee Mary Miller; one brother, Kelly Shea and Kim; one sister, Teri Cockroft and Larry; her grandmother, Marie Ritthaler; and her mother-in-law, Blanche Ryan, all of Delta.
Debbie was preceded in death by her mother, Addie M. Shea; and one brother, Scott Shea.
Rosary will be recited on Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Debbie's life will be officiated on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery.

Hazel Elizabeth Pierson

CRAWFORD - Hazel Elizabeth Pierson, a resident of the North Fork area - Hotchkiss and Crawford for 40 years, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in the Paonia Care & Rehabilitation Center at Paonia, a few days after celebration her 89th birthday.
Born on Oct. 23, 1911, in Ozark, Mo., Hazel Elizabeth Harp was the daughter of Samson D. Harp and Artie M. (Nokes) Harp. She spent her childhood years in Nixa, Mo., and graduated from high school in Lamar, Colo., in 1930.
Hazel was married on Jan. 26, 1930, in Lamar, Colo., to F. Lester Pierson, who preceded her in death on June 17, 1980, in Lamar.
She lived in Lamar for 30 years before moving to the North Fork area where she lived in Hotchkiss and Crawford for 40 years until the time of her death.
A homemaker and community worker, Hazel helped start the hot lunch program in the schools at Hotchkiss in the late 1940s.
She was a member of the Crawford United Methodist Church, Emblem Club No. 306, the Harmony Club, the United Methodist Women, the Book Club, and four different art clubs.
The loves of Hazel's life were painting and writing.
Survivors very grateful to share Hazel's life include three sons: Donovan L. Pierson and wife Bernice, of Omaha, Neb.; Victor G. Pierson and wife Marian, of Crawford; and Daryl L. Pierson and wife Myrna, of Minsk, Belarus, Russia.
She was the proud grandmother of 14 precious grandchildren; as well as several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Clark D. Harp and wife Mary, of Boring, Ore.; and one sister, Evelyn H. and husband Phillip Murphy, of Aurora.
Along with her parents and husband, Hazel was also preceded in death by six brother and sisters; and one daughter, Artie Anna Hardwick.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Hazel's life will be officiated by Pastor Judi Taylor on Monday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Crawford United Methodist Church. The service will conclude at the church.
Interment and graveside rites will be officiated by Pastor Charles Cooper on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. in the Fairmont Cemetery
at Lamar.

Garneta Christensen
Kind, Loving Woman

OLATHE - Garneta Christensen, age 83, of Olathe, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Monday evening, Oct. 30, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital & Medical Center at Grand Junction.
Garneta Lynch, the daughter of Thomas Andrew and Rose Ellen (Moyer) Lynch, was born on Aug. 4, 1917 in Leona, Kan.
She was married and widowed twice. Her first husband, Harvey T. Ollis, the father of her four natural children: Lillie Mae, Jimmie, Danny (Terry), and Donnie, preceded her in death in 1945. She was a caring stepmother to his nine older children.
When Garneta's second husband of 48 years, Roy Christensen, retired from Colorado State University, they moved to the warmth of Arizona. They lived near Tucson for many years, until Roy's death in 1997. They both enjoyed the warm weather and the roadrunner that came to the porch to be fed. Many of their friends still live in Tucson. One of the joys in both their lives was to travel to visit all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Garneta lived many years in Fort Collins near her daughter Lillie and her family, as well as her own brothers and sisters. She moved from Fort Collins to Olathe to be near her son, Donnie. One of the people she missed was her dear friend Norton who made sure she was well cared for and had fresh popcorn every day. In Olathe, she resided at Colorow Care Center where she had many fine friends in the staff and residents. She loved the days when stories about Colorado history were read aloud. She enjoyed making everyone laugh with her straight forward way of speaking.
Garneta enjoyed her role as housewife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed a busy life canning, raising many farm animals and a garden. She also took great pleasure in her many friends.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will fondly remember Garneta as a kind and loving women who always spoke her mind but always remembered to answer a child's letter; who worked from early morning until late at night but always had time to make sure cookies and cinnamon rolls were made for those who were hungry; and who always made time to take care of the needs of others but never asked for anything for herself.
Garneta is survived by many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who loved her very much. They include her three natural sons: Jimmie, Danny (Terry), Donnie, and several stepchildren.
There are many grandchildren including Gary, Fred and Jeff Dietz; Dana, Dwayne and Taunia Likens; Cathy, Michael, Cyrinda and Billy Ellenburger, and more by her stepchildren. Many are married with fine children of their own and there are some great-grandchildren as well.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Lucille and Blanche, and many nieces and nephews. There are many family members and friends who were missed in her obituary but they were never missed in the heart of Garneta Lynch Ollis Christensen.
Along with her parents and both of her husbands, Garneta was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lillie and two of her children, and many other family members.
At Garneta's request, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service in loving remembrance of her life was held with friends and family at Colorow.
She will travel back to Fort Collins one last time to rest beside her husband, Roy, and near other beloved members of her family.
A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Jack M. Palumbo

MONTROSE - Jack M. Palumbo, age 62, a resident of Montrose for nine years, died Friday evening, Nov. 3, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Jack M. Palumbo, the son of John C. Palumbo and Rose (Petkovich) Palumbo, was born on April 10, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Freedom, Pa.
On Oct. 21, 1955, Jack was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Beverly W. Piersol in Petrolia, Pa. They were the parents of two sons and had shared 45 rich and wonderful years together this year in October.
The Palumbo family lived in California for 28 years before moving to Montose nine years ago where Jack made his home until the time of his death.
Jack and Beverly owned The Frontier Convenience Store in Olathe for the last eight years.
Jack loved life and had numerous hobbies he greatly enjoyed during his lifetime.
Survivors very grateful to share Jack's life include his wife, Beverly Palumbo; two sons: Jack Palumbo and wife Michelle, all of Montrose; Chris Palumbo and wife Carla, of Riverside, Calif.
Jack was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren: Beverly Rowland, of Montrose; Blaiz and Bristol Palumbo, both of Riverside, Calif.; and one great-granddaughter, Salina Rowland, of Montrose.
Other family survivors include his mother, Rose Palumbo, of Montrose; one brother, Neil Palumbo and wife Sandra, of Bella Vista, Calif.; and two sisters: Joy Werner, of Pittsburg, Pa.; and Rosemary Glassburner, of Divide, Colo.
Jack was preceded in death by his father, John Palumbo.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Jack's life will be officiated by Pastor John Mocko on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Olathe Cemetery.
