Della Martinez
Enjoyed Walking, Traveling

MONTROSE - Della Martinez, age 76, a loving mother and grandmother and a longtime Montrose resident, died of a sudden illness on Monday, Sept. 4, at her home in Montrose.
Della Olguin, the daughter of Jose Dolores Olguin and Maria Requinalda (Barela) Olguin, was born on July 25, 1924, at La Plata, N.M. When she was 12 years, Della made her home in Montrose, where she received her education, grew to adulthood, and made her home until the time of her death.
She married John Martinez Jr. on April 3, 1943, in Delta, Colo.
Della was a homemaker, was employed as a retail sales person with the J C Penney Company in Montrose for a number of years, and later worked for Russell Stover Candies in Montrose until her retirement.
John preceded Della in death in 1981 at Montrose.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose.
After her retirement, Della enjoyed working with Meals on Wheels, delivering the meals to seniors. She also enjoyed participating in the senior lunch program at the Pavilion where she would meet her friends each day. She enjoyed crocheting and spent much of her time in the summer in her large vegetable garden which she shared with her many friends.
Della especially enjoyed walking and was seen walking all over Montrose. She loved to travel and traveled frequently to visit her children and grandchildren, returning recently from Las Vegas, Nev. She had traveled to Hawaii and extensively in the continental United States. Most importantly, Della was devoted to her children, grandchildren, St. Jude and Mary, and was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors grateful to share Della's life include two sons: John K. Martinez, of Fort Collins; William P. Martinez, of Peachtree City, Ga.; and one daughter, Rhonda Fullmer, of Riverside, Calif.
She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Wendy Schneider, of Whitewater, Wis.; Jennifer Goering, of Fort Collins; William P. Martinez Jr., of Rome, Ga.; Ian Tan, of Riverside, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren: Joseph Alan Schneider III, Claire Marie Schneider, and Mary Elizabeth Goering.
Rosary will be recited on Monday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose.
Funeral Mass to honor Della's live will be officiated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Mass will conclude at the church.

William W. 'Brick' Mink
World War II Veteran
April 26, 1917 - Sept. 9, 2000
AUSTIN, Colo. - William W. "Brick" Mink, age 83, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
William W. Mink was born in Cotopaxi, Colo., on April 26, 1917, the son of William and Lou Ethel (Sullivan) Mink. He spent his childhood in Fremont County.
During World War II, Brick was proud to serve his country in the 167th Artillary in the Asian Theatre.
Following his Military Discharge, Brick went to Woodland Park and then came to Delta in 1947. In 1973, the Minks moved to Austin where Brick remained until the time of his death.
He married Margaret J. Bennett on Aug. 7, 1947, in Raton, N.M. They were privileged to share 47 years of marriage. Margaret preceded her husband in death on Jan. 25, 1995, in Delta.
Prior to his retirement in 1976, Brick was employed as a Wildlife Conservation Officer for the State of Colorado for 30 years.
Brick's special interest that brought him happiness and satisfaction were hunting, fishing, gardening, and the outdoors.
Survivors include one son, Steve A. Mink, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Debra J. Abril, of Austin, Colo.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include one sister, Bessie Ferkel, of Canon City.
Along with his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by two sisters: Grace Pierce and Hazel Martin; and one brother, Robert C. Mink.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Brick's life will be officiated by Pastor Bob Hilyer on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta; (970) 874-8633.
Adelle M. Parsons
Nature Lover
March 29, 1916 - Sept. 9, 2000
MONTROSE - Longtime Warren, Ohio resident, Adelle M. Parsons, age 84, of Montrose, died early Saturday morning, Sept. 9, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
Adelle M. Parsons was born in Cortland, Ohio, on March 29, 1916, the daughter of Percy P. Parsons and Rula M. (Loveland) Parsons. She spent her childhood in the Cortland/Warren, Ohio, area and received her secondary education at Howland, Ohio.
Adelle lived in the Cortland/Warren, Ohio, area for 81 years, where she was employed with G.M.C.-Packard Electric Division until her retirement.
Three years ago she moved from Ohio to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Woodgate in Montrose and also in Warren, Ohio.
Among Adelle's many special interests that added meaning and happiness to her life were being a Bible student, a nature lover, reading, crocheting, cooking, and caring for the sick.
Survivors include one son, Charles Bruce Hoffman, of Leavittsburg, Ohio; one daughter, Nancy A. Corbin, of Montrose; four grandchildren: Charles William, Bruce Albert, Mark Hoffman, Christine Hoffman Roupe; and two great-grandchildren: Tiffany M. Hoffman and Nicholas Ryan Roupe.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Franklin Parsons, of Palm Coast, Fla.; and Donald Laural Parsons, of Southington, Ohio.
Adelle was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, and one sister, Jerry Digelow.
At Adelle's request, cremation has taken place and Memorial Services to honor her life were conducted at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at both Montrose and Warren, Ohio.
Interment will be held in the Crown Hill Park at Warren, Ohio.

Betty Maxine Tanner Schlosser
Loved Visiting Family, Friends

GRAND JUNCTION - Betty Maxine Tanner was born in Lander, Wyo., on Aug. 23, 1923, the daughter of Harley and Lillian Tanner. Betty, a former longtime Montrose resident, and a resident of Grand Junction since May of 1999, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in the Community Hospital at Grand Junction at the age of 77.
Betty spent her childhood days in Wyoming and Gering, Neb., graduated from Gering High School in 1941, where she also grew to adulthood.
She was joined in marriage to Richard "Dick" Schlosser on July 22, 1942, in Gering, Neb. They lived in Denver until Dick left to serve his country during World War II and Betty returned to Gering.
After the war, Betty and Dick lived at Seminole Dam, Wyo., for three years, and then lived in Casper, Wyo., for four years before moving to Loveland in 1952. Betty and her family moved from Loveland to Montrose in 1963 where she remained until 1999. She then moved to Grand Junction where she resided until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Montrose.
Betty greatly enjoyed fishing, camping, rock hunting, painting, and reading. She loved visiting with her family and friends, telling her grandchildren stories, and she was always ready to assist a friend in need. Betty touched many lives during her lifetime and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors very grateful to share Betty's life include three sons: Richard Max Schlosser and wife Peggy, of Tucson, Ariz.; Roger Merle Schlosser and wife Liz, of Billings, Mont.; Robert Michael Schlosser and wife JoVonna, of Grand Junction; and one daughter, Ricki Maxine and husband Mark Gavell, also of Grand Junction.
Betty is survived by eight precious grandchildren: Tommie Lynn and husband Steve Banghart, David Schlosser and wife Tatiana, Katie and Amanda Schlosser, Michael Styelzner and wife Sarah, Jeff Schlosser, Kyle and Randi Marie Gavell; and four great-grandchildren: Max Schlosser, Ruslan Nam, Kristopher and Katie Banghart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick Schlosser; one brother, Harley Schlosser; and one sister, Florence.
Private Family Services to honor and celebrate Betty's life were conducted on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Alvin J. Young
Pride and Joy: His Family

MONTROSE - Alvin J. Young, age 88, a resident of Montrose since 1986, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Sept. 9, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Alvin J. Young, the son of Bud Young and Stella (Tubbs) Young, was born on March 26, 1912, in Levant, Kan., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
In 1933, Alvin was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Lillie Brown in Norton, Kan. In 1943, they moved to Stratton where Alvin farmed and became engaged in the restaurant business.
The Youngs moved to Colorado Springs in 1957 where they remained until 1986. They then moved to Montrose and made their retirement home where they both remained until the time of their deaths. Lillie preceded Alvin in death.
Above all, Alvin's pride and joy in life was his family, children, and grandchildren. He always enjoyed working in the yard and a favorite pastime was to go driving. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors very grateful to share Alvin's life include one son, Jack Young and wife Lori, of Montrose; and two daughters: Pat and husband Ralph Havens, also of Montrose; and Vicki and husband Bob McCleary, of Peyton.
He is also survived by seven precious grandchildren: Cindy Muth and Mike Havens, of Colorado Springs; Jerry Young, of Alaska; Holley Anders, of California; Christina Young, of Montrose; and Jeff McCleary and Jamie McCleary, of Colorado Springs; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lillie, Alvin was also preceded in death by two brothers: Ray and Bill Young; and two sisters: Elva Williams and Leora Mundell-Rogers.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose, using the Main St. entrance.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Alvin's life will be officiated by Youth Minister Doug Anderson on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
At Alvin's request, cremation will follow the service.

Erma M. Phillips Carey
Mother of Eight Children
Jan. 11, 1920 - Aug. 22, 2000
LINDSEY, Calif. - Former longtime Olathe resident, Erma M. Phillips Carey, age 80, of Lindsey, Calif., died from injuries she received in a car accident on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in California.
Erma M. Gravener, the daughter of Richard L. and Lillie M. (Schorder) Gravener, was born on Jan. 11, 1920, south of Rocky Ford, Colo. When she was 3 years old, Erma moved with her family to southern Missouri. She received her education in Missouri, graduating from Monett High School and college in 1938.
Erma married Lester Phillips on Feb. 27, 1939, and they established their home in Gunnison, where they ownd and operated Phillips Upholstery for many years. Erma was also a homemaker and the mother of eight children.
In 1966, Erma and Lester moved to Olathe where Erma made her home until 1996 when she moved to Lindsay, Calif.
Lester preceded his wife in death.
On Aug. 21, 1998, Erma married Clarence Carey. She died the day before they would have celebrated their second wedding anniversary.
She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Lindsey, Calif.
Erma was a kind and loving person. Among her many special interests that brought her happiness were her church, her family, and crafts.
Survivors very grateful to share Erma's life include her six children: Lester E. Phillips and wife Sue, of Sacramento, Calif.; Katie and husband Harry Haberle, of Brevard, N.C.; Larry Phillips and wife Eileen, of Olathe; Laura and husband Gene Dyer, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; Barbara and husband Tom Sims, of Olathe; Boyd Phillips, of Olathe; her husband, Clarence Carey, of Lindsey, Calif.; two stepsons: Norman and Rodger Carey, also of Lindsey, Calif.; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and one sister.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Lester, Erma was also preceded in death by one daughter and one son.
Memorial Services to celebrate Erma's life will be officiated by The Rev. Jim Madison on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. in the Gunnison Cemetery
at Gunnison.
Lee R. Cockroft
Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather
Dec. 16, 1931 - Sept. 7, 2000
AUSTIN - Lee R. Cockroft, age 68, of Austin, Colo., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Integrated Health Services in Delta.
Lee R. Cockroft was born in Phillipsburg, Kan., on Dec. 16, 1931, the son of Ivan and Gertrude (Lake) Cockroft. In 1936, he moved with his family to Colorado, attended Delta County Schools and graduated from Delta High School.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953.
Lee was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Dona Lee Gore on June 10, 1952, at the Delta United Methodist Church in Delta. Lee and Dona were privileged to share 48 years together this year in June.
Lee was formerly employed by Meadow Gold and most recently was employed by the Delta School District and drove a school van for handicapped children.
He was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church, Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235, B.P.O.E., the Delta Masonic Lodge No. 62, and was a former Rainbow Dad. When asked by Air Force Officers, Lee and Dona organized the Delta Ground Observer Corps.
Lee's special interests that brought happiness and satisfaction to his life were hunting, fishing, and football.
Survivors very grateful to share Lee's life include his wife, Dona Lee Cockroft, of Austin, Colo; two sons: Gordon Lee Cockroft and wife Pat, of Cory; Larry Duane Cockroft and wife Teri, of Delta; and one daughter, Janelle and husband Dick Armentrout, of Loveland.
Lee was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Nicole Cockroft, Whitney Cockroft, Allison Sharpe, Amber Cockroft, Michael Armentrout, and Danielle Armentrout.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Don Cockroft, of Greeley; Dean Cockroft, of Evans; Lee's twin brother, Dee Cockroft, of Delta; one sister, Evelyn Babcock, of Greeley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by both of his parents; one brother, Bill Cockroft; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Cockroft.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Lee's life will be officiated by The Rev. Donald C. Malone on Monday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Delta United Methodist Church.

Richard Lawrence Sheets
"Doc Bronco"

GRAND JUNCTION - Richard Lawrence Sheets, age 45, of Grand Junction, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, 2000, at his home in Grand Junction. He was known as Rick Lawrence to radio listeners of the Grand Valley and also as "Doc Bronco" to Western Slope football fans.
Richard Lawrence Sheets, the son of Maurice Sheets Jr. and Donna (Olsen) Sheets, was born on Jan. 4, 1955, in Harlan, Iowa. Rick and his family lived in Avoca, Iowa, until he was 10 years old when they moved to Denver. He graduated from Arvada West High School with the class of 1973 and continued to pursue his education at a broadcasting school.
Rick landed his first radio job in Grand Junction in April of 1978, where he met Montrose native Linda Ladage. Rick was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Linda on Nov. 21, 1980. Working at various radio stations in the Grand Valley for the next 22 years, Rick was known for his knowledge of oldies that he shared with his listeners at KOOL 107.9.
He was also well known in the valley for his volunteer work for various organizations. Among his favorite causes were Partners of Grand Junction, the March of Dimes, and Muscular Dystrophy.
Rick was proud of being a Denver Bronco season ticket holder for 23 years and also of his extensive collection of Bronco memorabilia. Other hobbies that brought Rick happiness were reading, trivia games, and cooking. In his 45 years, Rick touched many lives and made this world a better place because he was here. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in many hearts.
Survivors so very grateful to share Rick's life include his wife of 19 years, Linda Sheets; two daughters: Angel and Rikki, all of the family home in Grand Junction; his son, Dave Brock, also of Grand Junction; and one brother, Ron Sheets, of Littleton.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Rick's life will be officiated on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Martin Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction. The service will conclude at the chapel and cremation will follow the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rick Lawrence Family Fund established by the local media in care of any local Wells Fargo Bank.
