GRAND JUNCTION - Arthur Glen Rose, age 75, a longtime Grand Junction resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Arthur Glen Rose was born at Bostwick Park near Montrose, Colo., on Oct. 1, 1924, the son of Arthur Guy Rose and Inez (Roatcap) Rose. He attended schools in Montrose and Delta and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1941.
During World War II, Glen proudly served his country in the United States Navy Submarine Service on the USS Tilefish in the Pacific Theater.
Following the war, Glen graduated from Graceland College, the University of Colorado, and Columbia University where he earned his Master's degree in 1950.
He taught in secondary schools in Wray and Jefferson County, and was principal of Arvada and Drake Junior High Schools. In 1970, Glen changed careers and spent the remainder of his working years as a counselor for the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Grand Junction.
In 1945, he was joined in marriage to Barbara Harshman, who preceded him in death in 1971. In 1973, Glen married Linda Fleischer in Grand Junction.
He was a member of the Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Music was always an important part of Glen's life. He sang in quartets and the chorus of the barbershop harmony group, SPEBSQSA. Other special interests that brought happiness and satisfaction to Glen's life were gardening, fishing, and reading.
Survivors very grateful to share Glen's life include his wife, Linda Rose, of Grand Junction; one daughter, Cynthia Rose Jackson and husband Timothy Jackson, also of Grand Junction; one son, Randy Joe Rose and wife Anna, of Dawsonville, Ga.; and three precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Gerald Rose and wife Georgia, of San Jacinto, Calif.; Robert Rose and wife Bonnie, of Denver, Iowa; and Theodore Rose, of Battlement Mesa.
Along with both of his parents and his first wife, Barbara, Glen was also preceded in death by one brother, Elbert Rose; and one sister-in-law, Christine Rose.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Glen's life will be officiated on Friday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel, 2515 Patterson Rd., in Grand Junction. The service will conclude at the chapel.

William Charles Ryan
Convair Astronautics Retiree

DELTA - William Charles Ryan, age 88, of Delta, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
William Charles Ryan was born in Austin, Colo., on Aug. 5, 1912, the son of William Franklin and Emma (Howard) Ryan. He attended school in Cedaredge until 1927.
William was joined in marriage to Margaret Lee Roberts on Feb. 11, 1930.
In April of 1943, he enrolled in the San Diego Vocational School and graduated in July of 1943, with a degree in Aircraft Hydraulics.
William began his career with Convair Astronautics in December of 1943 until September of 1945 and again in May of 1951 until his retirement. While working for Convair he worked on many government aircraft and missile projects. When he was not working for Convair, William enjoyed being a farmer. He was also a gardener for three years for the Bishop School in LaJolla, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1983. On June 1, 1985, he married Vera Henderson, who preceded him in death in 1996.
In life, William enjoyed his horses, cars, and airplanes. He especially enjoyed taking pictures of his family and country life. His death will leave an emptiness in the lives of many and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include a half brother, Jerry Ryan and wife Nancy, of Utah; a half sister, Alma and husband Harold Sturdevant, of California; 24 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many beloved family members and friends.
Along with his parents and both of his wives, William was also preceded in death by one sister Beula Smith; two brothers: James Walter Ryan and Harry Edward Ryan; a half brother, James Henry Turner; and two half sisters: Bessie Taylor and Minnie Pettis.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor William's life will be officiated by The Rev. Bill Forbes on Friday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in the Cedaredge Cemetery
at Cedaredge.
Memorial contributions, in memory of William Ryan, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Onolee Sherd
Retired Montrose Teacher

DELTA - Onolee Sherd, age 94, of Delta, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at J.V.'s Easy Living in Delta.
Onolee Sherd, the daughter of Jay and Emily (Sjoquist) Sherd, was born on Feb. 21, 1906, in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Onolee graduated from Western State College in Gunnison and taught school in Montrose until her retirement.
She was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one brother-in-law, Bob Jacobson, of Washington; and three friends: Mildred Croker, Mrs. Charles Petrie, and Alberta Swaim.
Onolee, the last surviving member of her immediate family, was preceded in death by both of her parents; one brother, Howard Sherd; and two sisters: Norine Jacobson and Evelyne Sherd.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery in Delta.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Onolee's life will be officiated on Friday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery Chapel in Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery
at Cedaredge.

John W. Leonard
His True Passion: Sheep Ranching

MONTROSE - Lifelong Montrose area sheep rancher, John W. Leonard, age 84, of Montrose, died of a long illness Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, 2000, in his home at Montrose.
John W. Leonard, the son of Robert Wesley Leonard and Lola Mae (Summers) Leonard, was born on Oct. 8, 1915, at Montrose, Colo. He spent all his childhood days in the Montrose area and helped his family ranch south of Montrose.
During World War II, John was proud to serve his country as a Private First Class in the United States Army. While serving his tour of duty with the Army, John was an ammunition carrier and served at Unimak Island and the Aleutian Islands. In November of 1942, he was transferred to the Enlisted Reserve Corps until he was Honorably Discharged in September of 1946.
John was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Helen Sayre on March 1, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Delta. John and Helen were the parents of two daughters and were privileged to share 56 years together this year in March.
John, a lifelong sheep rancher, loved ranching from the time he was old enough to work on the family ranch until he was no longer able to ranch.
The Leonards lived south of Montrose until 1974 when they moved to their Jay Jay Rd. home where John made his home until the time of his death.
Above all, John loved his family. One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John loved the outdoors and his true passion was sheep ranching.
Survivors very grateful to share John's life include his wife, Helen L. Leonard, of Montrose; and two daughters: Irene and husband Michael Holden, also of Montrose; and Ilene and husband Bruce Cranor, of Taylor Reservoir near Gunnison.
John was the proud grandfather of six precious grandchildren: Wendy Pierce, Amy Bollinger, Jana Yoho, Laney Helmick, Aaron Helmick, Heidi Cranor and 11 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Ralph Leonard; and three sisters: Ruth Keck, Grace Yocum, and Lucille Masden, all of Montrose.
John was preceded in death by both of his parents; two sisters: Loraine Leonard and Mary Leonard Baggett; and one great-grandson, Nicolas Bollinger.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor John's life will be officiated by Pastor Frank Vanlandingham on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.

Johanna Vivian Balderston

PAONIA - Johanna Vivian Balderston, age 102, a homemaker who lived the last 76 years of her life in Paonia, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at her home in Paonia.
Johanna Vivian Rasmussen was born July 26, 1898, at Throop, Kan., the daughter of Jens Peter and Christine (Bernhard) Rasmussen. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Wisconsin.
Johanna was joined in marriage to Jake Balderston on Feb. 6, 1918, in Beloit, Kan. Jake preceded his wife in death on March 17, 1965.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Paonia and was a member and past president of the Garden Club in Paonia.
Among the loves in Johanna's life that brought her happiness and contentment were gardening, music, crocheting, and traveling.
Survivors grateful to share Johanna's life include one son, Gene Balderston and wife Betty, of Albuquerque, N.M.; one daughter-in-law, Jean Balderston, of Montrose; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Rasmussen, of Missouri; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Jake, Johanna was also preceded in death by two daughters: Glenna Ullrey and Muriel King; two sons: Ed Balderston and George Balderston; two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Johanna's life will be officiated by her grandchildren on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Paonia First Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Paonia.

Elna Maude Glea (Hollingsworth) Barnard

OLATHE - Elna Maude Glea (Hollingsworth) Barnard, age 92, of Olathe, died Saturday morning, Sept. 9, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Elna Maude Glea Hollingsworth, the daughter of Frank and Lydia Hollingsworth, was born on Feb. 13, 1908, west of Olathe, where her father was a ditchrider on horseback. The family moved to Fruita and Grand Junction when she was a young girl where her father was a streetcar conductor.
As a young woman, Elna moved to Arvada, Colo., to work as a telegraph operator where she met and married Glen Barnard. They later moved to Pomona, Calif., for several years where their three children were born. In January of 1946, the Barnard family moved to their home on Ash Mesa near Olathe, where Elna and Glen lived to celebrate 70 years of marriage in May of 1996.
Elna loved the mountains of Colorado where she and Glen spent many hours fishing and hunting arrowheads. In later life when she could no longer go, Elna loved to paint pictures, write poetry, and raise flowers. Each new baby born into the family received hand-crocheted booties or a sweater. Her children and grandchildren were the very center of her life.
Elna is survived by one son, Kenneth Hollingsworth and wife Edna, of Olathe; two daughters: Patricia and husband Dean Welton, of Cedaredge; Lynn and husband Tom Smith, of Olathe; 28 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ford Hollingsworth and wife Mary, of Ouray.
Along with her parents and husband, Glen, Elna was also preceded in death by two sisters: Violet Waddington and Mina Hubbard; and two brothers: Hugh and Harry Hollingsworth.
Graveside Services to honor Elna's life were officiated on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Olathe Cemetery
at Olathe.

Genevieve T. 'Jeanne' Lesniewski
She Loved To Laugh

MONTROSE - Former Highland, Ind., resident, Genevieve T. "Jeanne" Lesniewski, age 84, a resident of Montrose since 1994, died Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Genevieve T. Barlog, the daughter of Leon Barlog and Mary (Sowa) Barlog, was born on Feb. 9, 1917, in East Chicago, Ind., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood. She furthered her education at a business school.
On Aug. 17, 1945, Jeanne was joined in marriage to Sigmund M. Lesniewski in Hammond, Ind. Sigmund preceded his wife in death on July 7, 1980.
Jeanne moved from Highland, Ind., to Montrose in 1994 where she remained until the time of her death.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Indiana. She also belonged to Our Lady of Grace Choir and the Polish Millennium Choir.
During her lifetime, Jeanne found happiness and joy in cooking, singing, and being with her friends. She will be fondly remembered for loving to laugh.
Survivors very grateful to share Jeanne's life include three sons: Ray Lesniewski and wife Crissa; Mike Lesniewski and wife Dede, all of Montrose; Tom Lesniewski, of Lake Village, Ind.; two daughters: Catherine "Cathy" and husband Nicholas "Nick" Klekot, of Griffith, Ind.; Sandy and husband Greg Wilson, of Montrose; and six precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Roman Barlog, of Indiana; and two sisters: Vi O'Donnell, of Indiana; and Irene Lotzer, of Wisconsin.
Along with her parents and her husband, Sigmund; Jeanne was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanne; one brother, Connie Barlog; and one sister, Kay Wielgos.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home in Highland, Ind.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Jeanne's life will be officiated on Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, in Indiana.
Interment will follow the service in the Holy Cross Cemetery
at Claumet City, Ill.
