Estefana Barrientos
Spirited, Caring, Loving Lady

MONTROSE - Estefana Barrientos, age 94, a resident of the Olathe and Montrose area for most of her lifetime, died after suffering a stroke on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center where she had been a resident for approximately two years. She was a homemaker and loved cooking and caring for her family.
Estefana Martinez, the daughter of Aurelio and Macedonia (Lopez) Martinez, was born on Dec. 26, 1905, in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, where she spent her childhood and grew to adulthood.
Estefana married Francisco Barrientos in 1921 in Mexico. They came to the United States in 1925 and Estefana became a naturalized citizen. They established their home in Arizona where Francisco worked on the railroad until they moved to Florence, Colo. in 1927. In 1931, the Barrientos family moved to Crested Butte and later made their home in the Olathe and Montrose area where they both remained until the times of their deaths.
The couple were the parents of nine children and shared 56 loving years of marriage. Francisco preceded Estefana in death on Jan. 1, 1978 and was buried in the Olathe Cemetery.
She was a member of the Spanish Assembly of God Church in Delta.
Special interests and hobbies that brought much happiness and pleasure to Estefana's life included: Quilting, sewing, gardening, fundraising activities for her church, and being of service to others.
Estefana's family was the center of her life. She loved and enjoyed her family and liked to entertain them by hosting family dinners and other social events.
Estefana was a peacefully spirited, caring, and loving lady. Her death has left a huge unwanted emptiness in the lives of her family and all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Estefana's life are one son, Martin Barrientos, of Montrose; four daughters: Elsie and husband Bill Cordova, of Grand Junction; Mary and husband LeRoy Belarde, Ruby Barrientos, all of Montrose; and Carmen and husband Robert Abeyta, of Colorado Springs.
Estefana is also survived by approximately 185 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by four sons: Catalino, Carl, Raymond, and Frankie Barrientos; two sisters; and one brother.
A Prayer Service was conducted on Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Estefana's life were officiated by The Rev. Carlos Sluder, of the Spanish Assembly of God Church in Delta, on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose First Assembly of God Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home; (970) 249-4400.
Fern A. Knight-Marquardt
Mentor, Mother Figure for Many

GRAND JUNCTION - Fern A. Knight-Marquardt, a retired businesswoman and a resident of Grand Junction, died on Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home in Grand Junction at the age of 91.
Fern A. Scott was born in Trinidad, Colo. on Oct. 6, 1908, the daughter of James Franklin and Maude Belle (Hollinger) Scott. She spent her childhood in McAlester, Okla., and graduated from high school in Cisco, Texas.
Fern moved to Colorado Springs in 1931 and to Grand Junction in 1944 where she remained until the time of her death. She was the co-owner and manager of Knight Appliance in the 700 block of Main Street in Grand Junction.
She was married to Cecil C. Knight and Clarence W. Guthrie who both preceded her in death.
On Jan. 14, 1990, Fern married Carl F. Marquardt in Grand Junction.
She was a past president of Altrusa, past president of Redlands Garden Club, a member of PEO, and a member of the Unity Center of Light Church and Church of Religious Science.
Fern greatly enjoyed people, entertaining, and ceramics, and was a mentor and mother figure for many.
Survivors left to cherish Fern's memory are her husband, Carl F. Marquardt, of Grand Junction; three daughters: Ruth Knight, of Grand Junction; Claireen Cline, of Norwood; Judy Eckert, of Montrose; and one son, Dwight Guthrie, of Grand Junction.
Fern was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of 15 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Dorothy Davis, of Arlington, Texas.
In addition to her parents and her first two husbands, Fern was also preceded in death by one son, James C. Knight; and three brothers.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Fern's life will be officiated by The Revs. Charles Baggett and Doris Greenwood on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel at Grand Junction. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary of Grand Junction; (970) 243-2450.

Catharine Vera Howard
Wife, Mother, Grandmother

GRAND JUNCTION - Catharine Vera Howard, age 69, of Grand Junction, died on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, after a lengthy illness and went home to be with her Lord and Savior.
Catharine Vera Probst was born in Bloomsberg, Pa., on April 23, 1930, the daughter of George and Vera Probst.
Catharine married Wesley William Howard on March 15, 1947, in Gunnison, Colo. They were the parents of two children and had shared 52 loving years of marriage.
She especially loved and enjoyed gardening, painting, and antiques.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Catharine's life are her husband, Wesley W. Howard, of Grand Junction; one son, Roger Howard and wife Janet, of Glade Park; and one daughter, Kathy and husband Vernon Ryan, of Grand Junction.
She was the proud and loving grandmother of four grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include one brother, George Probst and wife Kay, of Stillwater, Pa.; two sisters: Lillian Hippenstiel, of Orangeville, Pa.; Eileen and husband Gary Townsley; a cousin, John H. Kishbaugh and wife Cornelia, all of Montrose; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Catharine will be so deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Neva M. Hazelwood
Wife, Mother, Grandmother

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Former longtime Montrose resident, Neva M. Hazelwood, age 91, of Phoenix, Ariz., died on Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Phoenix.
Neva Maude Lappin was born on June 28, 1908, on a farm near Wynoka, Okla., the daughter of Edward Lappin and Myrtle (Huffman) Lappin. She spent her early years in Oklahoma, Idaho, New Mexico and Colorado.
Neva married Chester T. Hazelwood on April 11, 1931, in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Chester preceded Neva in death in 1993 after sharing 62 loving years of marriage.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Montrose, belonged to Montrose Rebekah Lodge No. 31, and was a member of the Colorado Archaeology Society.
Above all, Neva was a dedicated wife and a very loving mother who greatly enjoyed her role as a homemaker.
She also loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Neva's life are one daughter, Arlis P. and husband Kent Savage, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one son, Dale E. Hazelwood and wife Jo Lee, of Springfield, Va.
Neva was the proud and loving grandmother of six grandchildren and the great-grandmother of seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Neva's life will be officiated on Friday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Ariz. The service will conclude at the church.
Inurnment will be held in Montrose in the spring.
Harold Lee Chick
Montrose Resident Since 1935

MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose resident, Harold Lee Chick, age 87, a retired auto mechanic, truck driver, and farmer, died Sunday morning, Feb. 6, 2000, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Harold Lee Chick, the son of Alfred William and Laura (Fetter) Chick, was born on June 10, 1912, in Washington, Kan., where he spent his childhood.
In 1935, Harold moved to Montrose where he was employed as an auto mechanic, truck driver, and farmer until his retirement.
Special interests that brought much happiness and pleasure to Harold's life were fishing, camping, and hunting.
Survivors include two sons: Donald Chick, of Hyannis, Neb.; Kenneth Chick, of Denver; and two daughters: Leona Thompson, of Montrose; and Ruby Roberts, of Tyler, Texas.
Harold was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of 14 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Clarence Chick, of Buhl, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Harry and George Chick; and two sisters: Florence McRae and Eldora Brown.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Harold's life will be officiated on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose.

Josie Diaz
Beloved Wife and Sister

DELTA - Josephine A. "Josie" Diaz, age 73, of Delta, died on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at the Delta Care Center in Delta the day before she would have celebrated her 74th birthday.
Born on Feb. 11, 1926 in Trinidad, Colo., Josephine A. Abeyta was the daughter of Emilio and Adelia (Herrera) Abeyta. At the age of 1, she moved with her family from Trinidad to Delta, where she attended school, grew to adulthood, and spent the rest of her life.
In 1968, Josie married Simon Diaz in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Josie's special interests and hobbies that she greatly loved and enjoyed were crocheting, embroidering, gardening, taking care of her flowers, and animals.
Survivors grateful to have shared Josie's life are her husband, Simon Diaz, of Delta; five sisters: Rose Abeyta, Marie Alarid, Lena Garcia, all of Delta; Mary Calica, of Aberdeen, Wash.; Delfina Prieto, of Ogden, Utah; and four brothers: Joe Abeyta, Lupe Abeyta, Jamie Abeyta, all of Delta; and Emilio Abeyta, of Ogden, Utah.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Jenny Valdez and Teresa Alarid.
Rosary will be recited on Monday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Rev. Mark Bettinger on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta, (970) 874-8633.
John D. Seifried
Retired U.S. Air Force Officer

CEDAREDGE - John D. Seifried, a World War II veteran and a Retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at his home in Cedaredge at the age of 77.
John D. Seifried, the son of Norwood L. and Elizabeth J. (Rineer) Seifried, was born on Feb. 28, 1922, in Quarryville, Pa., where he spent his childhood, graduated from Quarryville High School with the class of 1939, and grew to adulthood.
John married Geraldine Laverna Smith on Feb. 10, 1945, in Lancaster, Pa. They were the parents of two children, and had shared 46 loving years of marriage at the time of Geraldine's death on Aug. 22, 1991.
Prior to his retirement, John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 28 years, which included World War II, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the following honors/ commendations: World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit, and Armed Forces Defense Medal (highest medal).
In 1963, he graduated from Command & Staff College (ECJ).
John was a member of The Retired Officers Association, Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association, and Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association.
Above all, John had one hobby and special interest that brought into his life so much happiness and satisfaction FLYING! He absolutely loved flying!
Survivors grateful to have shared John's life are one son, Thomas J. Seifried, of West Chester, Pa.; one daughter, Nancy S. Langham, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Geraldine, John was also preceded in death by his parents.
No local services will be held.
Interment will be conducted in the Ft. Logan National Cemetery

Terry Lee Stafford
Black Coral Diver, Businessman

TELLURIDE - Terry Lee Stafford, of Telluride, died of a long illness Saturday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2000, at his sister's home in Telluride.
Terry Lee Stafford was born in Chicago, Ill. on Sept. 13, 1941, the son of James S. and Diana (Roth) Stafford. He spent his childhood, graduated from Highland High School, and grew to adulthood in Albuquerque, N.M. Terry continued his education at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, graduating with a degree in Business.
He married Nina Cherry and they were the parents of a daughter, Fara Lee Stafford. Terry and his second wife, Debbie Lucas, were the parents of a son, Travis James Stafford.
He lived in Albuquerque, N.M. and Aspen, Colo. before making his home in Maui, Hawaii for 30 years where he was a black coral diver and the owner of two businesses: Kula Lime Company and Lahaina Graphics. At the time of his death, he was living in Telluride where he died in his sister's home.
Terry's loves in life that brought him happiness and much pleasure were sailing, diving, surfing, skiing, and traveling the world.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Terry's life are a son, Travis J. Stafford, of Maui, Hawaii; one daughter, Fara Lee Stafford, of Paia, Maui, Hawaii; his mother, Diana Stafford, of Telluride; one brother, James S. Stafford, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters: Vicki Parthing, of Broomfield; and Susan Stafford Kerr, of Telluride.
Terry was preceded in death by his father, James S. Stafford; and his younger brother, Geoffrey C. Stafford.
Cremation has taken place and his family will scatter the cremains at sea on Saturday, June 10, at high noon in the Lahaina Bay at Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
