HOTCHKISS - Laurel Lee Whiting, age 48, of Hotchkiss, died of metastatic breast cancer Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2000, at her home in Hotchkiss.
Laurel Lee Webster, the daughter of Edgar and Maxine (Schuldt) Webster, was born on Feb. 25, 1951, in Wheaton, Ill., where she spent her childhood. Laurel continued to pursue her education at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
She married Jeff Richardson with the marriage later ending in divorce.
On Dec. 10, 1975, Laurel married Jim Whiting at their home on LeBar Creek at Steamboat Springs.
She lived in Ridgway, South Fork and ranched in the San Luis Valley near Los Sauces, Colo.
Laurel was a ski instructor and homemaker. She greatly loved and enjoyed camping, living in the mountains, horses, competitive trail riding, skiing, and was a watercolor artist as well as other art media.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Laurel's life are her husband, Jim Whiting, of Hotchkiss; one brother, Edgar Webster, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two sisters: Christine Cowern Winlaw, of British Columbia, Canada; and Meredith Clarage, of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Maxine Webster.
Cremation has taken place, with service arrangements pending.

Larry Brand
Loved Mountains, God's Nature

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Larry Lee Brand, age 63, a former Montrose Realtor and businessman, died on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at his home in St. George, following a long and courageous battle against emphysema and complications due to diabetes.
Larry Lee Brand was born in Aspen, Colo. on Nov. 21, 1936, the son of Michael H. and Lettie (Lee) Brand. Larry grew up in Aspen, where his father owned the Brand Building. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, majoring in engineering.
He worked in Denver in various positions and met and married Joanne Morris on June 10, 1961. In 1965, Larry, Joanne and their three children moved back to Aspen to run the family guest ranch, Elk Mountain Lodge, with his brother Glenn. The whole family helped with the lodge and its guests, conducting Jeep tours in the summer and snowmobile tours in the winter. Larry loved the mountains, the peace and quiet of the valley, and God's nature.
In 1978, the Brands sold the ranch and moved to Montrose where Larry and Joanne owned a restaurant. In the early 1980s they became Realtors and formed their own company, Terra Realty. In 1989, after several years of buying and selling real estate, they decided to specialize in property management. The Brands sold their property management business in 1995 and retired to St. George, Utah.
Larry served as president of the Montrose Board of Realtors and president of the Montrose Kiwanis Club. He earned his G.R.I. in real estate in Colorado. He also held other positions with the Board of Realtors and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Aspen.
Larry's many interests that added meaning and pleasure to his life included hiking mountain trails, construction, architectural drafting, flower gardening, reading, and meeting new people. His children and grandchildren were his greatest joy in life. Larry's optimism, humor and determination gave all who knew him hope and happiness. He was known to give people the benefit of a doubt, always being respectful, considerate and non-judgmental. He had an ever-present, contagious smile that he shared with everyone he met. He was a wonderful example of a person determined to do the right thing and live life as fully as possible as long as he could.
Survivors left to cherish Larry's memory are his wife, Joanne M. Brand, of St. George, Utah; three children: Tina Brand, of Denver; Gregory Brand and wife Karen, of Colorado Springs; Susan and husband Marshall Hall, of Aurora; and five grandchildren: Adam, Rachel, Kiarah and Mariah Hall; and Kristin Brand.
Funeral Mass in loving remembrance and to honor Larry's life will be officiated on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the St. George Catholic Church, 259 Wet 200 North in St. George.
A Private Memorial Service to pay respects to Larry's life will be held at a later date in Colorado.

Kenneth J. Bertorello
Had a Great Love of Live

MONTROSE - A very special human being, Kenneth J. "Kenny" Bertorello, a man who had a great love of life, a special talent for making people happy, and always on call for children, a resident of Montrose most of his life, died of a long illness Thursday evening, Jan. 20, 2000, in the Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital at Denver at the age of 43.
Kenneth J. Bertorello, the son of John Robert and Anna Faye (Roberts) Bertorello, was born on Oct. 12, 1956, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from Montrose High School with the class of 1975, and grew to adulthood. Kenny was active in high school in football and baseball.
Following his high school graduation, Kenny worked with his grandfather, Jack Bertorello, at Bertorello & Son General Machine Shop.
In 1981 he met Toni Herrera. The couple moved to Denver in 1984 where their son, Dustin "Dusty" James Bertorello, came into their lives on March 15, 1986, and was their absolute joy.
In August of 1986, the Bertorello family moved to Lancaster, Calif., and in 1990 they moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where they resided until 1993 when they returned to Montrose. Even though they had lived in other locations, Kenny always considered Montrose home.
Kenny worked for the Montrose Recreation District, beginning as a volunteer and then worked with the district, supervising the adult softball program and after school in-line hockey program. He helped a great deal with the hockey program and whatever else was needed. Kenny continued his interests until his health prevented him from doing so.
Kenny was loved by all and had a special way of relating to everyone. He greatly enjoyed photography, specializing in nature and his family. Kenny especially enjoyed fast and slow pitch softball and his greatet thrill was watching Dusty participate in different sports. At 43 years old, Kenny was taken all too soon, but he left a great gift of love and happiness to all he knew. He will be so greatly missed.
Survivors grateful to have shared Kenny's life are his devoted wife of nearly 16 years, Toni Bertorello; one son, Dusty Bertorello, age 13; and his mother, Anna Faye and stepfather Joe Bellgardt, all of Montrose.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Dorothy Caperton, of Craig; Donna DeGuelle, of Durango; his mother-in-law, Gloria Baros; four nephews, Jason, who lives in Denver; Josh, Jessie, and Joel, all sons of Dorothy and Randy Caperton; one stepniece, Amber, daughter of Ray and Donna DeGuelle; two cousins: Mark Field, of Craig, who Kenny grew up with and they played football and baseball side by side; Michelle Field, of Aurora; one living aunt on the Bertorello side, June Bertorello Field and husband George M. Field, of Aurora; as well as many, many family members on the Herrera side.
Kenny was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bertorello.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Kenny's life will be officiated by Pastor Tim Smith on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in Cedar Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home, (970) 249-4400.
Ira Edward Wright
World War II, Korean Vet

DELTA - Ira Edward Wright, age 84, of Delta, was born in Broadwater, Neb. on March 27, 1915, the son of Wesley Q. and Mary E. (Christ) Wright. He died on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Grand Junction.
Ira spent his childhood in Eastern Colorado and lived in Canon City prior to moving to Delta in 1938, where he made his home until the time of his death.
Ira married his first wife Laura in 1937 in Denver, Colo. Laura preceded him in death in October of 1971.
In December of 1942, during World War II, Ira joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country until his discharge.
Following his discharge from the Army, Ira went to work for the City of Delta as a lineman until 1950 when he entered the United States Army again and served his country in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After being discharged in 1951, he returned to Delta and continued to work for the City of Delta until his retirement in 1977.
On March 1, 1972, Ira married Virginia C. Zimmermaker in Delta. The couple would have shared 28 years of marriage this year in March.
Ira was a past member of the Delta American Legion and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Ira's life are his wife, Virginia C. Wright, of Delta; one son, Donald E. Wright and wife Corey, of Everett, Wash.; and one granddaughter, Acacia Dawn Wright, also of Everett, Wash.
Other family survivors include one brother, John H. Wright and wife Jean, of Brighton; one sister, Dorothy Baston, of Denver; a half-sister, Georgia Mae Stagner, of Lamar; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ira was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Laura; and one brother, Floyd B. Wright.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Ira's life will be officiated by The Revs. Howard Cowan and Don Bavor on Friday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. in the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel at Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery

George N. 'Bill' Weeks
Utility Maintenance Worker

MONTROSE - George N. "Bill" Weeks, a resident of Montrose since September of 1997, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 25, 2000, at Tina's Guest Home in Montrose at the age of 92.
Born on Feb. 4, 1907 in Ratcliff, Ark., George N. Weeks was the son of John and Sarah Hanna (Oliver) Weeks. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Arkansas.
Bill married Mary Levearn Core on Aug. 23, 1936 in Yuma, Ariz. Bill and Mary lovingly welcomed one daughter born to their union. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife on July 18, 1998 in Glendora, Calif.
Bill was employed as a maintenance worker for a utility company in California for many years.
In September of 1997, he moved from Covina, Calif. to Montrose to be closer to his daughter and her family, where he made his home until the time of his death.
Bill's favorite pastime was fishing and he greatly loved and enjoyed watching all sports on T.V.
Survivors left to cherish Bill's memory are his daughter, Maryna and husband Bob Laughlin, of Montrose; three grandsons: Mark, Steven, and Jack Laughlin; one granddaughter, Lorena Laughlin; and two great-grandsons: Jeremiah McDonnell and Mark R. Laughlin.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Irene Godfrey, of Charleston, Ark.; and Dathern Harris, of Ratcliff, Ark.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Bill's life will be officiated on Monday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. in the Oakdale Memorial Park Chapel in Glendora, Calif.
Interment will follow the service in the Oakdale Memorial Park Cemetery

Eleanor Reed
An L.V.N. in Nursing

MONTROSE - Eleanor Reed, age 92, a homemaker and resident of Montrose for five years, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 25, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Eleanor Allmon was born in Dicy, Texas on April 16, 1907, the daughter of C.B. and Ada (Holmes) Allmon. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Godley, Texas.
Eleanor married Earl Reed on Dec. 23, 1924 in Cleburne, Texas. Eleanor and Earl moved from Fort Worth, Texas to Montrose five years ago to be closer to their son and his family, where Eleanor made her home until the time of her death.
Earl preceded his wife in death in 1997 at Montrose.
Eleanor was a Baptist and was very active in her church and its activities.
She greatly enjoyed sewing and was an L.V.N. in nursing.
Survivors very grateful to have shared Eleanor's life are one son, Lindy Reed and wife Marie, of Ouray; three grandchildren: Perry Reed, of Montrose; Phillip Reed, of Irving, Texas; Cindy Reed, of Ouray; and four great-grandchildren: Megan Reed, Charley, Casey and Tyler Reed.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Eleanor's life will be officiated by Pastor Marty Riggan on Friday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Agnes P. Redman
Beloved Mother, Grandmother

MONTROSE - Agnes P. Redman, age 86, a homemaker and resident of Montrose for 12 years, died Friday evening, Jan. 21, 2000, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Agnes P. Schoepke was born in Rockwell City, Iowa on April 22, 1913, the daughter of Adolph and Carolina (Good) Schoepke. She spent her childhood in Rockwell City and graduated from Somers High School in Somers, Iowa.
Agnes married Emil Redman on May 28, 1935 in Rockwell City, Iowa. They lovingly welcomed one son and three daughters born to their union. Agnes was preceded in death by her beloved husband on May 29, 1992, in Montrose.
The Redmans moved from San Diego, Calif. to Montrose 12 years ago where Agnes made her home until the time of her death.
She was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Montrose and was also active in the church choir and women's church activities.
Agnes enjoyed reading and loved traveling extensively with her husband all over the world.
Survivors left to cherish Agnes' memory are one son, James Paul Redman, of Portland, Ore.; and three daughters: Katherine and husband Earl Waller; Anne Redman, all of Montrose; Susan McLellan-Harris, of New York City, N.Y.
Agnes was the proud and loving grandmother of nine grandchildren, and the great-grandmother of seven great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three sisters: Grace Boegler, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mabel Wyant, of Lake City, Iowa; and Lela Merrill, of Mountain Home, Ark.
In addition to her parents and husband, Agnes was also preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Deckard; and an infant brother, Carl Schoepke.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Agnes' life will be officiated by Pastor John Mocko on Friday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Montrose, with visitation to be held prior to the service at the church.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose, (970) 249-2121.

Ida Mae Murphy
November 3, 1924 - January 18, 2000
Ida Mae Murphy, long-time Montrose resident, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Manor Care Nursing facility in Boulder. She was 75.
She was born Ida Mae Reed in Hillsboro, Ohio on Novemer 3, 1924. She graduated from Wilmington College in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She married James Francis Murphy on June 22, 1946. She worked as a Chemist for Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, CA before moving to Colorado in 1967. She worked for Circuit Science in Englewood, CO until 1973, when she became the first employee of Trienco, Inc., of Broomfield. She moved with Trienco to Montrose in 1977 and remained with the company until her retirement in 1991.
Ida was involved in community theater productions and was active in Republican politics. In retirement, she served as a volunteer at Montrose Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and an occasional round of golf. She enjoyed people, a good song and kept an optimistic outlook on life.
Survivors include her three daughters, Michaela Hume of Boulder, CO, Patricia Ristevski of New Milford, CT, Ginger Murphy of Montrose, CO, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at Montrose Christian Church, 2351 Sunnyside Road, Montrose, CO on Friday, January 28, 2000, at 2:00 p.m.
