MONTROSE - Roger L. Place, age 43, of Montrose, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in his home at Montrose.
Roger L. Place was born in Phoeniz, Ariz. on Jan. 29, 1956, the son of Clarence and Nellie (Crawford) Place.
He was formerly employed as a forklift driver for a mobile home manufacturing plant, but had currently been disabled for years.
Roger moved from Phoenix, Ariz. to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, Colorado, and sightseeing. Above all, Roger loved fishing and playing chess.
Survivors grateful to have shared Roger's life are his mother, Nellie Place, of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters: Patty and husband Sam Baird; Donna Hegland, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; Susie and husband Gary Perkins, of Tucson, Ariz.; Joy and husband Tom Savage, of Montrose; as well as seven nieces and one nephew.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Place; and one brother, Gary Place.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Roger's life were officiated by Pastor George Moore on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church at Montrose. The service concluded at the church.
Inurnment will be held at a later date in Arizona.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Lori Gilman
A Lover of Life

ECKERT - Lori Gilman, age 36, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in her home at Eckert. Lori was a home school educator.
Lori, of Native American descent, was born on May 28, 1963, in Tulsa, Okla.
She married Don Gilman in Las Vegas, Nev.
Lori was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Cedaredge, and the Delta Zeta Sorority.
She was adventurous, a lover of life, and loved and enjoyed reading. Lori's passion was being an advocate for children's education for the gifted and talented.
Survivors left to cherish Lori's memory are her husband, Don Gilman; one son, Ryan Gilman; and two daughters: Ariel Gilman and Taylor Gilman, all of Eckert.
Other family survivors include Lori's mother, Marie Hale; one brother, Mike Holman, both of Tulsa, Okla.; and her grandfather, Leonard Gordon.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Twila Mae Gordon.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Lori's life will be officiated by Pastor Joan Uda on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Cross at Cedaredge.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Services, Inc.

Sebastian Orr Purdum
Korean and Vietnam Veteran

DELTA - Sebastian Orr Purdum, age 68, a Korean Conflict and Vietnam War veteran, and a resident of Delta for 32 years, died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Born on Aug 17, 1931 in Spokane, Wash., Sebastian Orr Purdum was the son of Robert and Claire (Goodson) Purdum.
Sebastian proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in the military for his country, Sebastian was awarded three Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Sharp Shooter Badge with a Rifle Bar, Marksman Badge with Carbine Bar, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In 1952, Sebastian married Verna M. Knox in Nevada. The couple were later divorced.
He lived in Marshalltown, Iowa and Spokane and Seattle, Wash., before moving to Lewiston, Idaho. In 1967 he moved from Lewiston, Idaho to Delta, where he made his home for 32 years until the time of his death.
Sebastian was a member of the Immanual Bible Church of Delta. He held a great interest in the Scouts as a child and the military reserves prior to full-time service (ROTC).
Throughout his lifetime, Sebastian especially loved and enjoyed leather work, model trains, fishing, fly tying, chess, and studying his Bible.
Survivors grateful to have shared Sebastian's life are one daughter, Debra Ann Chamberlin, of Lewiston, Idaho; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three sisters: Charlotte R. "Peggy" Anderson, of Montrose; Elithe N. Witte, of State Center, Iowa; and Sally R. Keyohara, of Moriarty, N.M.
Sebastian was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Claire E. Purdum; and three sisters.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Sebastion's life were officiated by Pastor Floyd Dobson on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. in the Delta City Cemetery
at Delta.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta, (970) 874-8633.
Naomi Estella Krantz

DELTA - Naomi Estella Krantz, age 86, of Delta, died on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Naomi Estella Lord, the daughter of Walter and Sadie (Parker) Lord, was born on Aug. 13, 1913, in Genesee, Idaho.
Naomi married Victor Krantz and he preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1993, in Loveland, Colo.
Prior to her retirement, Naomi was employed as a clerk/typist for the Hendrie & Bolthoff Hardware Store in Denver for many years.
She moved from Denver to Loveland and then moved to Cedaredge where she lived for three years before making her home in Delta until the time of her death.
Naomi belonged to the Cedaredge Senior Citizens before she entered the nursing home.
She loved and enjoyed craft work, especially crocheting.
Survivors left to cherish Naomi's memory are two sisters: Carole and husband Donald Macy, of Cedaredge; Blanche Carey, of Aurora; one brother, Charles Lord, of Denver; one stepson, Victor Krantz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Victor Krantz, Naomi was also preceded in death by her father, Walter Scott Lord; her mother, Sadie (Parker) Lord; three brothers: Walter Lord, Winfield Lord, Wayne Lord; and one sister, Gladys Wilson.

Donald E. Houser
Retired from USDA

NORWOOD - Donald E. Houser, age 65, of Norwood, died after a lengthy illness Sunday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2000, in his home at Norwood.
Born on July 20, 1934 in Coventry, Colo., Donald E. Houser was the son of Vernon A. and Marion (Bement) Houser. Donald spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Norwood.
He served his country in the United States Army for three years.
Donald married Anna Fedde on July 5, 1957 in Montrose, Colo. Donald and Anna lovingly welcomed one son and one daughter born to their union. They were privileged to share 42 years of marriage last year in July.
Donald retired from the USDA in 1983 due to medical reasons.
He was a member of the Norwood Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service, the Boy Scouts of America, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors left to cherish Donald's memory are his wife, Anna Houser, of Norwood; one son, Michael Houser and wife Carolyn Fay, of Fort Collins; and one daughter, Debra Houser, of Walden.
Donald was the proud and loving grandfather of two grandsons: Nathan Houser, age 6; Kevin Houser, age 3 (Michael's sons); and one granddaughter, Carolyn Sue Houser, age 17 (Debra's daughter).
Other family survivors include two brothers: John Houser and wife Bobbie, of Norwood; Alfred "Tucker" Houser and wife Kathy, of Washington State; three sisters: Marilou and husband Bob Scarbrough, of Cottonwood, Ariz.; Leona and husband Tom Scarbrough, of Redvale; Judy and husband Bill Rizley, of Pueblo; three sisters-in-law: Pearl Martellaro, of Salida; Rose Ellen McUne, of Montrose; Carol and husband Bill Knifer, of Colona; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and an infant sister.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Donald's life will be officiated by Clint Perry on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. in the Norwood Cemetery.

Bernice Bertha 'Bernie' Hinton
Loved to Cook

MONTROSE - Bernice Bertha "Bernie" Hinton, age 98, formerly of Montrose, died early Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2000, in the Larchwood Inn at Grand Junction.
Bernice Bertha Brown, the daughter of Charles W. and Winifred E. (Robb) Brown, was born on Nov. 10, 1901, in Rocky Ford, Colo. At the age of 3, Bernie moved with her family from Rocky Ford to the Montrose area where she was raised.
Bernie married Ernest Alonzo Hinton on July 29, 1923, in Paonia, Colo. Ernest and Bernie lovingly welcomed three daughters born to their union.
Ernest preceded Bernie in death on June 30, 1967, in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Grand Junction.
Bernie loved to cook and was employed as a cook for various restaurants and summer dude ranches for youth until her retirement.
She cherished her family and grandchildren who will remember her as the "best."
Survivors so grateful to have shared Bernie's life are her three daughters: Lorene Smith and Maxine Murray, both of Grand Junction; and Marcia D. Aguilar, of San Antonio, Texas.
She has 11 grandchildren, had 29 great-grandchildren, and has 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Gladys Christie, of Colorow Care Center in Olathe; and Phyllis Gookin, of Rye, Colo.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bernie was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Bernie's life will be officiated by Delbert Smith on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel at Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose, (970) 249-2121.

Ellen W. Golle
School Teacher 44 Years

OLATHE - Ellen W. Golle, age 76, a retired school teacher and lifetime Olathe resident, died early Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2000, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe. Ellen taught school for 44 years and after her retirement she still tutored children.
Ellen W. Whitener, the daughter of Otto and Edna (Cobb) Whitener, was born on May 20, 1923 in Olathe, Colo., where she spent her childhood and graduated from the Olathe High School in 1941. Ellen continued to pursue her education at Western State College in Gunnison, graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Ellen married Clare Golle on June 6, 1946, in the Olathe United Methodist Church. Clare and Ellen lovingly welcomed one son and one daughter born to their union.
Clare preceded Ellen in death on Jan. 12, 1997, in Olathe.
Ellen was a member of the Olathe United Methodist Church and served as the church organist, as well as belonging to the American Legion Auxiliary and Delta Kappa Gamma where she held various offices. A highlight in Ellen's life was when she received recognition from the Montrose School District for her excellence in teaching.
The loves and joys of Ellen's life were spending time with her family, music, and traveling extensively with her husband before his death.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Golle and wife Betty, of Montrose; one daughter, Susan and husband Dan Bailey, of Thornton; and grandchildren: Troy Golle, of Montrose; and Jacob and Michelle Bailey, of Thornton.
Other family survivors include one brother-in-law, Bill Fluke and wife Linda, of Montrose; and one sister-in-law, Jean and husband Ken Holm, of Santa Maria, Calif.
In addition to her husband, Clare Golle, Ellen was also preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Ellen's life will be officiated by The Rev. Lowell Uda on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Olathe United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose, (970) 249-2121.

Louise Catherine Chambers
Retired Waitress, Homemaker

HOTCHKISS - Louise Catherine Chambers, age 86, a homemaker, retired waitress, and resident of Hotchkiss for 35 years, died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Elms Haven Care Center at Thornton, Colo.
Louise Catherine Rostan, the daughter of Henry James and Alma A. (Kirkland) Rostan, was born on Feb. 15, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., where she spent her childhood.
Louise married Wilbur D. Chambers on Aug. 11, 1934, in Waukegan, Ill. Wilber and Louise lovingly welcomed one son and three daughters born to their union.
Wilbur preceded Louise in death on Sept. 30, 1998, in Thornton.
Louise lived in Chicago, Ill. and Littleton prior to moving to Hotchkiss, where she made her home for 35 years until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Hotchkiss, the Lady Elks and Cottonwood Club, both of Hotchkiss. She also did a lot of volunteer work at the Delta Care Center, a nursing home in Delta.
Louise loved and enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, fishing, and flower and vegetable gardening.
Survivors so grateful to have shared Louise's life are one son, William J. Chambers and wife Mary, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three daughters: Dolores Jean and husband Bob Roberts, of Battlement Mesa; Betty Ann and husband Earl Duncan, of Longmont; and Marlene Kay and husband Edward Zimmerman, of Arvada.
Louise was the proud and loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Rostan.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Louise's life will be officiated by Pastor Judi Taylor on Saturday, Jan. 15, a 2 p.m. in the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
