John Mead Avara
Husband, Father, Grandfather

CEDAREDGE - John Mead Avara, age 67, a resident of Cedaredge for 12 years, died on Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at his home in Cedaredge.
John Mead Avara was born in LaJunta, Colo. on July 6, 1932, the son of John E. Avara and Lola M. (Mead) Avara. He spent his childhood in LaJunta, Karval, and Ordway, graduating from the Ordway High School with the class of 1951.
John married Mary N. Miller on June 15, 1952, in LaJunta, Colo. John and Mary's union was blessed with two sons and one daughter. They celebrated 47 loving years of marriage this year in June.
The Avaras lived in Ordway from 1952 to 1953 and from 1962 to 1965; Broadwater, Neb. from 1959 to 1961; and Castle Rock, Colo. from 1953 to 1958 and again from 1965 to 1987. In 1987 they moved to Cedaredge where John made his home until the time of his death.
He worked for Colorado Department of Transportation in Highway Maintenance for 20 years where he attained the position of supervisor.
John was a member of the Cedaredge United Methodist Church in Cedaredge, the Masonic Douglas Lodge No. 153 of Castle Rock, Colo.; the Spruce Chapter No. 129, Order of Eastern Star; and Martha Chapter No. 135 of Castle Rock, Colo.
Fishing, camping, and traveling were among the activities that brought John much enjoyment during his lifetime. The last 12 years of his life John dedicated his life to being a caregiver to the ill.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Avara, of Cedaredge; two sons: Robert W. "Bob" Avara, of Littleton; John "Mike" Avara, of Rifle; one daughter, Pat and husband Jack Kercher, of Arvada; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include John's mother, Lola M. Avara, of Rocky Ford; two brothers: Melvin Avara and wife Gwen, of Canon City; Dean Avara and wife Lois, of Pueblo; two sisters: Marjorie and husband Harry Case, of Pueblo; Marie and husband Duane Yoder, of Rocky Ford; as well as many other relatives.
John was preceded in death by his father, John E. Avara; and one brother, Roy E. Avara.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr St., in Arvada, Colo.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor John's life will be officiated by Pastor Jean Hoeft on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Arvada United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Crown Hill Cemetery
at Wheat Ridge, with arrangement being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Local Memorial Services in memory of John will be officiated by Pastor Joan Uda on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. at the Cedaredge United Methodist Church. The service will conclude at the church.

Lillie Mae Hendricks
Beloved Mother and Grandmother
Oct. 24, 1901 - Oct. 23, 1999
DELTA - Lillie Mae Hendricks, age 97, a homemaker and longtime Delta resident, died on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, in Integrated Health Services of Delta, one day before she would have celebrated her 98th birthday.
Lillie Mae Hamilton, the daughter of George Scott Hamilton and Mary Ellen (Bagshaw) Hamilton, was born on Oct. 24, 1901, in Pratt, Kan., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Lillie married Sherman Kelly David on May 5, 1919. They established their home in Stafford, Kan. from 1919 until 1930. The Davids then lived in Two Buttes from 1930 to 1937, and Cedaredge from 1937 to 1963. Lillie and Sherman moved from Cedaredge to Delta in 1963 where Sherman preceded Lillie in death on Nov. 24, 1965.
Following Sherman's death, Lillie continued to make her home in Delta until the time of her own death.
She married Benjamin Franklin Hendricks on Jan. 13, 1969, and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1976.
Lillie was a member of the Immanual Bible Church of Delta, was active with the Senior Center in Delta as long as she was able, and belonged to the Baca Busy Bees.
Among the many loves in Lillie's life that she so greatly enjoyed were: Flower gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking, and reading mystery books.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty and husband Glenn Lowell, of Delta; one son-in-law, Roger Barnes; and four stepchildren.
Lillie was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Jack Hawkins, Cathy Shipley Ruland, Janis McLaughlin, Judy Folks, Susan Anderson, LuAnn Barnes, David Barnes; the great-grandmother of 11 great-grandchildren; the great-great-grandmother of eight great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and both of her husbands, Lillie was also preceded in death by one son, Marion David; and three daughters: Patsy Barnes, Phyllis Robertson, and Winona Beryl Hawkins.
Graveside Memorial Services and inurnment in remembrance and to honor Lillie's life will be officiated by Pastor Bob Spindler on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Delta City Cemetery.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Pauline Coghill
Loved Quilting, Gardening

MONTROSE - Pauline Coghill, age 86, of Montrose, died on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Pauline Groppe, the daughter of Charles Groppe and Nancy (Chaesman) Groppe, was born on March 12, 1913, in Lakin, Kan., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Pauline was a homemaker and especially loved and enjoyed quilting and flower gardening. She will be remembered for her many beautiful quilts and always having a gorgeous garden.
Survivors include two sons: Charles Coghill, of Prospect, Ore.; and Archie Coghill, of Montrose.
Pauline was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Travis Coghill, Etta Pourroy, Valorie Credle, Yvonne Simpson, Charlotte Morrey, Carl Coghill; and seven great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Roberta Kirby, of Tucson, Ariz.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Pauline's life will be officiated on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will be held in the Kendall Cemetery
at Kendall, Kan., with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Wallace "Bruce" Marshall
World War II Veteran
Jan. 20, 1927 - Oct. 23, 1999
DELTA - World War II veteran, Wallace "Bruce" Marshall, age 72, a retired truck driver of new automobiles and a resident of Delta since 1994, died on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at his home in Delta.
Born on Jan. 20, 1927 in Vernal, Utah, Wallace "Bruce" Marshall was the son of Mack Marshall and Della (Rolfe) Marshall. He spent his childhood, graduated from the Cedaredge High School, grew to adulthood, and lived in Cedaredge until 1944.
In 1944, during World War II, Bruce entered the United States Navy where he served his country until his discharge in April of 1946.
After his military discharge, he lived and worked in Denver until 1976.
Bruce married Clarine Niccoli on Oct. 10, 1952 and their union was blessed with one son and four daughters. Bruce and Clarine had shared 47 loving years of marriage this month.
In 1976, Bruce and Clarine moved to Cedaredge and lived there until 1994 when they moved to Delta where Bruce made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.
Bruce loved and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and feeding the wild birds.
Grateful for having shared Bruce's life are his wife, Clarine Marshall, of Delta; one son, Bob Marshall and wife Tina, of Maui, Hawaii; four daughters: Kitty and husband Ron Maupin, of Strasburg; Paulette and husband Bob Hamilton, of Trinidad; Cindi Marshall and husband Jim Smith, of Cedaredge; Jacqueline Sego, of Norwood; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Betty and husband Boyd Cornell, of Cedaredge; and Carol Ann and husband Jack Matthews, of St. Libory, Neb.
Bruce was preceded in death by his father and mother; one sister, Edith Wiseman; and one brother, Robert G. "Bud" Marshall.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Bruce's life will be officiated by The Rev. Mark Bettinger on Friday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. in the Cedaredge Cemetery
at Cedaredge, with Military Graveside Rite being conducted by Grand Mesa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9221.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

George Elmore Shoudy

MONTROSE - George Elmore Shoudy, age 76, a retired truck driver and a resident of Montrose since 1992, died on Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, in the Latter-Day Saints Hospital at Salt Lake City, Utah.
George Elmore Shoudy, the son of Elmore Shoudy and Lorna (Buck) Shoudy, was born on Sept. 26, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in California.
George was a veteran of World World II and he proudly served his country for eight years in the United States Navy.
George married Kaylene Kahlin and prior to his retirement, he was employed as a truck driver, working for Bekins Van Lines and other companies.
He moved from California and established his home in Grand Junction until November of 1992 when he moved to Montrose, where he made his home until the time of his death.
George greatly loved and enjoyed mechanics, cooking, and animals of all kinds especially horses. He will be lovingly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.
Survivors grateful for having shared George's life are his wife, Kaylene Shoudy, of Montrose; two daughters: Georgine and husband David Tulette, of Menifee, Calif.; Cynthia and husband Larry Pitts, of Montrose; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three stepsons; and one stepdaughter.
Other family survivors include four sisters: Lorna Shinton, of Elko, Nev.; Ruth Anderson, of Washington; Ilene Anfenson, of Mentor, Ohio; and Helene Frost, of Fresno, Calif.
George was preceded in death by his parents, one son, and one stepson.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor George's life will be officiated by Pastor Mike Lundberg on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
Jeannette Rankin (Thornton) Hunt

Nov. 13, 1919 - Oct. 22, 1999
GRAND JUNCTION - Former longtime Telluride resident, Jeannette Rankin (Thornton) Hunt, age 79, of Grand Junction, died after a short illness on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at the LaVilla Grande Health Services at Grand Junction.
Jeannette Rankin Thornton was born in Wolf Point, Mont. on Nov. 13, 1919, the daughter of Ralph and Laura Thornton.
In 1935, Jeannette moved with her family from Denver to Telluride.
She married James R. Hunt on Sept. 16, 1945, in Telluride, Colo., and their union was blessed with one son. Jeannette and James celebrated 54 loving years of marriage last month.
In May, 1966, the Hunts moved to Grand Junction where Jeannette made her home until the time of her death.
Jeannette especially enjoyed cooking and knitting and her hobby was ceramics.
Survivors include her husband, James Hunt; and one son, Stephan Hunt, both of Grand Junction.
Other family survivors include one brother, Ralph Thornton, of Gateway; two sisters: Donna Kelly, of Gateway; Gay Cappis, of Telluride; five nephews; and one niece.
Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one nephew, and one niece.
Private Family Services in remembrance and to honor Jeannette's life will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Martin Mortuary and Crematory of Grand Junction.
Carl S. Goodwin Jr.
Photographer, Businessman
Sept. 17, 1917 - Oct. 25, 1999
MONTROSE - World War II veteran, radio announcer, businessman, professional photographer, and former Ridgway resident, Carl S. Goodwin Jr., age 82, of Montrose, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Carl S. Goodwin Jr. was born in Keokuk, Iowa on Sept. 17, 1917, the son of Carl S. Goodwin Sr. and Helen (Mayer) Goodwin. He spent his childhood in Maplewood, N.J., where he graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood. He continued to pursue his education at the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business.
During World War II, Carl was proud to serve his country in the United States Army.
He was employed as a radio announcer for KSNO radio in Aspen, Colo. for 10 years.
Carl married Ann R. Barrett on Oct. 28, 1978, in Ouray. Carl and Ann were privileged to share their 21st wedding anniversary three days before Carl's death.
Carl and Ann moved from Cape Cod, Mass. to Ridgway in March of 1990 and then relocated to Montrose where Carl made his home until the time of his death.
He was the owner and operator of Goodwin Photography & Framing in Montrose and Once Upon A Century, an old-time photo business in Ouray.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Goodwin, of Montrose; one son, Brantly Goodwin and wife Pat, of Houston, Texas; and one daughter, Molly and husband Bill Webster, of Portland, Maine.
Carl was the proud and loving grandfather of two granddaughters: Caroline and Elizabeth Webster, of Portland, Maine.
Other family survivors include one sister, Betty Whitely, of Mendham, N.J.
A celebration of Carl's life was officiated by The Rev. Steve Wengrovis on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service conclude at the chapel.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Carl, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Robert Leonard Correll
Had A Great Sense of Humor

MONTROSE - World War II veteran and a retired iron worker in construction, Robert Leonard "Bob" Correll, age 74, a resident of Montrose since 1997, died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24, 1999, in the Veterans Medical Center at Grand Junction.
Robert Leonard Correll, the son of Claude Lamont Correll and Genevieve (Keeler) Correll, was born on June 14, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood at Bonner Springs and El Dorado, Kan.
During World War II, Bob enlisted in the United States Army from El Dorado, Kan. where he served his country from 1943 to 1946.
After being discharged from the military, Bob moved to Wichita, Kan.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an iron worker in construction.
Bob married Martha J. "Marty" Kaiser on April 7, 1990, in Ventura, Calif.
In 1997, Bob and Martha moved from the mountains of Sheridan, Wyo., where they had lived for approximately four years, to Montrose where Bob made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Bob will be lovingly remembered for his great sense of humor. He and Marty loved to travel and especially enjoyed camping and the mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Marty Correll, of Montrose; one son, Van Crain and wife Jody, of Lander, Wyo.; four daughters: Maryann and husband Kenny Cox, of Boise, Idaho; Katrina Mezenen, of Evanston, Wyo.; Linda and husband Wes Roberson, of Montrose; Ann and husband John Benscotter, of Ventura, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include seven sisters: Betty Chamberlain and Claudia DeMaranville, both of Bonner Springs, Kan.; Mariann Weninger, Norma Cook, and Barbara Correll, all of Wichita, Kan.; Virginia Gampper, of Overland Park, Kan.; and Gloria Smith, of Waveland, Miss.
