Gertrude Viola Caulder

Loved, Enjoyed Her Family

Jan. 6, 1927 - Oct. 10, 1999

MONTROSE - Gertrude Viola Caulder, age 71, a homemaker and resident of Montrose, died Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.

Gertrude Viola Creamer, the daughter of Hugh S. Creamer and Mathe Bell (Groves) Creamer, was born on Jan. 6, 1927, in Tampa, Fla., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.

Gertrude married Gerald W. Caulder, with the marriage ending in divorce.

In 1955 she moved to California and lived there until moving to Colorado.

Gertrude was a member of the Baptist Church in California.

She loved and greatly enjoyed her family, church activities, and dogs.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Lee and husband Jose Alarcon, of Montrose; three grandchildren: Marnie L. and husband Warner Bauer; Raelene S. Alarcon, all of Warren, Mich.; Lacey J. Alarcon, of Orange County, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren: Anthony J. Alarcon, Kyle D. Bauer, Kristopher H. Bauer, Miranda L. Narro, Savannah J. Alarcon, and Joseph E. Alarcon.

Other family survivors include one brother, Hugh Edward Creamer, of California.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Gertrude's life will be officiated by Pastor Martin Riggan, of the Victory Baptist Church of Montrose, on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the San Juan Living Center in Montrose. The service will conclude at the center.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Stanley Virgil Rule

Delta Fruit Co. Crew Boss

Feb. 17, 1915 - Oct. 12, 1999

DELTA - Former longtime Cedaredge resident, Stanley Virgil Rule, age 84, a Delta resident since 1995, died on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.

Stanley Virgil Rule was born in Rocky Ford, Colo. on Feb. 17, 1915, the son of Arthur Rule and Luela (Richardson) Rule. He spent his childhood in Cedaredge and attended the Sand Creek School in the Cedaredge area.

Stanley married Nancy D. Pratt on March 19, 1941, in Delta, Colo. Their union was blessed with one daughter and they celebrated 58 loving years of marriage this year in March.

The Rules established their home in Cedaredge until 1995 when they moved to Delta.

Stanley was a member of Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235, B.P.O.E.

During his lifetime, Stanley loved and enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy D. Rule; one daughter, Carlene and husband Elbert Dougan, all of Delta; four grandchildren: Nancy Anderson, of Colorado Springs; Mike Dougan and wife Laura, of Castle Rock; Ron Dougan and wife Michelle, of Highlands Ranch; Gary Dougan and wife Frankie, of Delta; and five great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one sister, Ruby Westly, of Denver.

In addition to his parents, Stanley was also preceded in death by four brothers: Leo, Merle, Forest, Arla; and one sister, Ruth Blossom.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Stanley's life will be conducted by officers of Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235 on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel at Cedaredge. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Delta.

Winifred B. Goodhue

Retired Registered Nurse

June 5, 1908 - Oct. 13, 1999

MONTROSE - Winifred B. Goodhue, age 91, a retired registered nurse and a resident of Montrose since 1959, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 13, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital. Winifred made her home in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose for the last two years.

Winifred B. Owens was born in Carlisle, Iowa on June 5, 1908, the daughter of Walter Owens and Alice (Rice) Owens. She spent her childhood in Iowa, graduated from high school in Carlisle, Iowa and the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Nursing Program in Des Moines, Iowa.

Winifred married Marion Goodhue on Feb. 27, 1935, in Carlisle, Iowa. Winifred and Marion's union was blessed with four sons and one daughter. Marion preceded Winifred in death on Feb. 18, 1996 in Montrose nine days before they would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

The Goodhues moved from Iowa to Montrose in 1959 where Winifred made her home until the time of her death.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a registered nurse.

Winifred was a member of the United Methodist Church of Montrose and the United Methodist Women.

The main loves in Winifred's life that added meaning and much pleasure were her family, church, gardening, and flowers.

Survivors include four sons: David E. Goodhue and wife Margaret, of Montrose; Howard D. Goodhue and wife Marilyn, of Carlisle, Iowa; Fred O. Goodhue and wife Jeanne, of Spokane, Wash.; Robert M. Goodhue and wife Linda, of Montrose; and one daughter, Mary E. and husband Raymon Snyder, of Montrose.

Winifred was the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren, and the great-grandmother of nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Winifred was also preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Crippin Chapel.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Winifred's life will be officiated by The Rev. Steven Warren on Friday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church at Montrose.

Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

William Russell "Bill" Vance

Utility Lineman

Dec. 18, 1968 - Oct. 14, 1999

MONTROSE - William Russell "Bill" Vance, age 30, of Montrose, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at his home in Montrose.

William Russell Vance was born in Denver, Colo. on Dec. 18, 1968, the son of J. Neil Vance and Valtie (Ouellette) Vance. He spent his childhood in Montrose, graduated from the Montrose High School, and grew to adulthood here.

Bill then moved to California where he made his home until a year ago when he returned to Montrose, making his home here until the time of his death.

Bill was employed as a lineman for a utility company.

Among the many loves and joys in Bill's life were: computers, football, boating, waterskiing, and spending time in the mountains.

Survivors include one daughter, Whitney Vance, of Arkansas; his father, Neil Vance, of Montrose; his mother, Valtie Taylor, of Texas; and his grandmothers: Betty Vance, of Montrose; and Dorothy Ouellette, of California.

Other family survivors include: Barbara Vance, Al and Lou Vance, Rene Lucky, Chris Black, Shane and Shelly Sparlin, Eddie Willis, Charlene Willis, Jerry Taylor, Tommy Conner, Jami Conner, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Bill's life will be officiated by the Montrose Elks on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Montrose Elks Lodge. The service will conclude at the lodge.

Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E. Main, Montrose, Colo. 81401; telephone (970) 249-2121.

Jerry James "J.J." Swisher

Western Colorado Rancher

Oct. 7, 1936 - Oct. 12, 1999

DELTA - Jerry James "J.J." Swisher, a resident of Delta for 13 years, died on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at his home after a long battle with cancer, five days after celebrating his 63rd birthday.

Jerry James Swisher was born in Los Angeles County, Calif. on Oct. 7, 1936, the son of Charles E. Swisher and Minnie L. (Cooley) Swisher. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Northeastern and Southeastern Colorado. He continued to pursue his education at the University of Southern Colorado and earned an Associate degree from Oklahoma State University. While attending Oklahoma State University, J.J. was a team member of the university's rodeo team.

He was proud to have served his country in the United States Marine Corp.

J.J.'s first wife, Patty (Argello) Swisher, preceded him in death. His second wife, Barbara J. "B.J." Swisher also preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 1992, in Grand Junction.

J.J. was a rancher and had ranched in Western Colorado since the mid-1970s.

He lived in Grand Junction prior to moving to Delta 13 years ago where he made his home until the time of his death.

On Aug. 2, 1999, J.J. married Susan McGinnis in Delta.

He was a member of the National Canadian Rodeo Association and the Rodeo Cowboy Association.

In 1961, he qualified for the finals in the National Canadian Rodeo Association in Edmonton Alberta, Canada.

J.J. had a passion for rodeos. He rodeoed and won many awards in Southeastern Colorado, riding rough stock, saddle bronc riding, as well as roping.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Swisher, of Delta; and five grandchildren.

J.J. was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Patty (Argello) Swisher and their daughter, Judy Ann Dibrell; and his second wife, Barbara J. "B.J." Swisher.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cedaredge Taylor Funeral Service and again on Monday, Oct. 18, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Cedaredge Taylor Funeral Service.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor J.J.'s life will be officiated by R. Wayne Eklund on Monday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel at Cedaredge.

Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Cedaredge.

Chester E. Knoll

WW II, Korean Conflict Veteran

May 12, 1917 - Oct. 13, 1999

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Former Montrose resident, Chester E. Knoll, age 82, died of cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at his home in San Diego, Calif.

Chester E. Knoll, the son of Charles Chester Knoll and Irene (Friend) Knoll, was born on May 12, 1917, in Riverside, Calif., where he spent his childhood, graduated from high school, grew to adulthood, and attended the Riverside Junior College.

Chester served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

After 35 years of service, Chester retired from his position as administrator in 1975 with the Pacific Telephone Company.

He married Evelyn Wolverton on April 3, 1964 in Haven, Calif. Chester and Evelyn's union was blessed with one son and one daughter and they had shared nearly 35 loving years of marriage at the time of Evelyn's death on Feb. 17, 1999.

He lived in San Diego, Calif., then returned to Riverside and remained there until moving to Eckert in 1980. After his wife's death in February this year, he returned to San Diego to be with his daughter where he made his home until the time of his death

Chester was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of Riverside, Calif.

His special interest that added meaning and pleasure to his life was building and flying remote control airplanes. Chester was also an avid ham radio operator.

Survivors include one son, William C. Knoll, of Oceanside, Calif.; one daughter, Suzanne Power, of San Diego, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Other survivors include one sister, Edna Meairs, of Riverside, Calif.

In addition to his parents and wife, Chester was also preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette Niedens.

Private Services in remembrance and to honor Chester's life will be held at the family's convenience.

Arrangements were handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Cedaredge.

Earl Dee Hildenbrand

Businessman, Farmer

April 30, 1908 - Oct. 14, 1999

HOTCHKISS - Earl Dee Hildenbrand, age 91, a longtime Hotchkiss resident, died on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Earl Dee Hildenbrand was born in Kinsley, Kan. on April 30, 1908, the son of Frank and Alda (Mills) Hildenbrand.

He married Mary Belino on June 5, 1940, in Monte Vista, Colo. Earl and Mary established their home at Hotchkiss, where Earl owned Hildenbrand Electric and farmed in the Hotchkiss area for many years. He sold his farm in 1989.

Mary preceded Earl in death on Jan. 14, 1996.

Earl was a member of the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Klingler, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; one son, Donald Dugger, of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include a half sister, Anna Green, of Castle Rock, Colo.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Earl was also preceded in death by his father, Frank B. Hildenbrand; and his mother, Alda F. (Mills) Hildenbrand.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Earl's life will be officiated on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery, 682 1725 Rd., Delta, Colo. 81416; telephone (970) 874-8633.
