Joseph Perez Gomez
Former Montrose Pastor

DENVER - Former Montrose resident, Joseph "Joe" Perez Gomez, age 85, of Denver and the former pastor of the Apsento Alto Assembly of God Church in Montrose, died of cancer Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Hospice of Metro Denver.
Joseph Perez Gomez was born in La Trinadad, Mexico on May 3, 1914, the son of Rosalio Gomez and Rosa Perez Gomez. At the age of 9, Joe moved with his family from Mexico to Lorado, Texas and shortly thereafter, when he was 12 years old his father died. The family moved to Northern Colorado and Joe received his education and grew to adulthood in the Weld County area. At the age of 17, Joe moved to Berthoud and attended the Four Square Bible College. He maintained a life-long interest in ministry.
While traveling and working in agriculture, Joe met Guadalupe Minjarez in Sugar City, Colo. After a long courtship, they were married on Aug. 19, 1936 in Fort Collins, Colo.
Joe and Guadalupe worked and lived in the northeastern area of Colorado and for a short time in Nebraska. They then moved to California to assist in the war effort by both becoming welders in the shipyards in the Los Angeles area.
After the war, Joe and Guadalupe returned to the Sugar City area in Colorado where they were engaged in farming. They eventually moved to the Greeley area where Joe started a blacksmith ship. In 1952, Joe started working for the Continental Oil Company where he remained until his retirement in 1965.
After he retired, Joe and Guadalupe moved to Montrose and Joe became the pastor of Apsento Alto Assembly of God Church. He continued his active ministry until the death of his beloved wife on Jan. 16, 1995, in Montrose.
Later in 1995, illness forced Joe to move from Montrose to Denver to be closer to his family where he remained until the time of his death.
The main focus, love, and joy of Joe's life was his family and his extended church family.
Survivors include one son, Ezekial Gomez and wife Maria Armida, of Denver; three daughters: Dina Gomez, of Aurora; Rosalie Hernandez, of Littleton; and Mary Ann and husband Isan Duran, of Arvada.
Joe was the proud and loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren, and the great-grandfather of 21 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include four brothers: Benjamin Gomez and Jess Gomez, both of Greeley; John Gomez, of California; Charles Gomez, of Denver; and three sisters: Isabel Chavarria, of Denver; Rose Garcia and Lia Hunt, both of California.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was also preceded in death by one sister.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and celebrate Joe's life will be officiated on Friday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. in the Greeley Assembly of God Church, 601 21st Ave., in Greeley.
Interment will follow the service in the Linwood Cemetery
at Greeley, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
John Roy Coleman Sr.
Wholesale Hardware Salesman
Dec. 16, 1907 - Oct. 6, 1999
MONTROSE - Retired wholesale hardware salesman, John Roy Coleman Sr., age 91, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, 1999, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose. John had been a resident of the Montrose/ Olathe area since 1998.
John Roy Coleman was born in Bethel, Kan., on Dec. 16, 1907, the son of Garrett Coleman and Melinda (Green) Coleman. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Kansas.
In 1928 John married Marguerite Casteel in Kansas. Marguerite preceded John in death.
John moved to Missouri in 1937 where he established his home until 1998. In 1998, at the beginning of the year, he moved to Olathe and then entered Valley Manor Care Center where he remained until the time of his death.
He was a member of the IOOF in Missouri.
John greatly enjoyed hunting birds and being outdoors, but the main focus, love, and delight of his life were his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, John Coleman Jr. and wife Evelyn, of Montrose; one daughter, Barbara Twyman, of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren: Mark Coleman and wife Debbie, of Montrose; Kevin Twyman, of Grandview, Mo.; John L. Coleman, of Denver; Denise and husband Robert Bolinder, of Palmer, Alaska; Debbie and husband John Topi, of Blue Springs, Mo.; Shari and husband Pat Urtz, of Raytown, Mo.; Melinda Coleman, of Montrose; Karen Twyman, of Kansas City, Mo.; as well as 15 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Jim Coleman and wife Golden, of Bonner Springs, Kan.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was also preceded in death by one son, Robert Coleman, who died in January of 1999; two sisters; and three brothers.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor John's life will be held in Missouri next week.
Interment will be held in the Floral Hills Cemetery
at Kansas City, Mo.
Local arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral home.
Memorial contributions, in John's memory, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Larry L. Baker
Loved Drag Racing
June 9, 1961 Oct. 7, 1999
HOTCHKISS - Larry L. Baker, age 38, an auto technician and resident of Hotchkiss for four years, died on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in the University of Colorado Hospital at Denver.
Larry L. Baker, the son of Stanley W. Baker and Shirley M. (Simons) Baker, was born on June 9, 1961, in Denver, Colo., where he spent his childhood and went to school until the seventh grade. He then moved with his family to Hotchkiss, where he graduated from the Hotchkiss High School in 1980.
Larry lived in Grand Junction for 17 years before returning to Hotchkiss four years ago where he made his home until the time of his death.
Larry was a member of the National Drag Racing Association and the Whitewater Drag Racing Association.
He enjoyed body building and snowmobiling. Larry's passion in life was drag racing.
Survivors include his parents, Stanley W. "Stan" and Shirley Baker; two brothers: Terry Baker; Steve Baker and wife Laurie, all of Hotchkiss; one sister, Robin Baker, of Denver; six nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Larry's life will be officiated by The Rev. Judi Taylor on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Hotchkiss United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

James Roderick Newberry
Olathe Farmer, Montrose Businessman

MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose resident and owner of Jim's Sheet Metal Shop, James Roderick "Jim" Newberry, age 83, died Saturday morning, Oct. 9, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose after a brief illness.
James Roderick Newberry was born on Nov. 18, 1915, in Floyd County, Iowa, the son of Benjamin E. Newberry and Eva Margaret (Duncan) Newberry. When he was still an infant, he moved with his parents to Ash Mesa near Olathe. He attended the Highland School and graduated from the Olathe High School in 1933. After his high school graduation, he continued his education at the Hemphill Diesel Engineering School in Los Angeles, Calif., while still maintaining a residence in Olathe.
Jim married Elizabeth "Ellen" Lipes on March 29, 1939, in Olathe, Colo. They lived and farmed in the Olathe area until 1942 when they moved to Iowa to farm for Jim's Uncle George Newberry.
The Newberrys returned to Montrose in 1945 and Jim worked for Lathrop's Hardware & Tin Shop until 1959 when he opened Jim's Sheet Metal Shop. He retired in 1979 and sold his business to the Cooling brothers.
Jim was an active member of the Montrose First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was awarded several Certificates of Recognition for his volunteer service from the General Board of Laity Rocky Mountain Conference. He was a Past Noble Grand of the Montrose IOOF Lodge and was active in Scouting and Good Sams RV Club.
Jim thoroughly enjoyed traveling and spent several winters visiting family and friends in the western half of the United States.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth "Ellen" Newberry, of Montrose; one son, Elden Newberry and wife Linda, of Scottsbluff, Neb.; and one daughter, Shirley and husband Paul Crockford, of Cheyenne, Wyo.
Jim was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Michael, Renee, Lionel Newberry, of Nebraska; Sean Eskridge and wife Darcy, of Montana; Brian Eskridge and wife Kelly, of Washington; and the great-grandfather of one great-grandson, Gregory Newberry, of Nebraska.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Eva Newberry of Olathe; and one brother, George Stanley Newberry of California.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Jim's life will be officiated by Pastor Steven K. Warren on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church at Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Ila M. Geyer
Beloved Mother, Grandmother

ECKERT - Ila M. Geyer, age 81, a homemaker and a Delta County resident since 1956, died on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert.
Ila M. Mendenhall, the daughter of Ira Mendenhall and Mabel (Conger) Mendenhall, was born on Sept. 23, 1918, in Esbon, Kan. After spending the first two years of her life in Kansas, Ila moved with her family to Colorado, where she spent the remainder of her childhood and attended school.
She married Harry H. Geyer in Ft. Morgan, Colo. Ila and Harry established their home in Ft. Morgan until 1956 when they moved to Delta County. Harry preceded Ila in death at Delta.
Following her husband's death, Ila continued to make her home in Delta County until the time of her own death.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Cedaredge Saddle Club, the North Fork Horse Patrol, the Rebekah Lodge, and the Grange.
Among Ila's many loves in life, she had a real passion for horses, roses, and flowers.
Survivors include one son, Darrell Geyer, of Eckert; one daughter, Marjorie Cooley, of Hotchkiss; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Agnes Frost, of Wiggins; and Hazel Cowell, of Delta.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ila was also preceded in death by one daughter, Lila Atwood.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Nettie M. Darter
Delta Resident 68+ Years

DELTA - Nettie M. Darter, age 93, a homemaker and a Delta resident for 68-plus years, died on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Integrated Health Services of Delta.
Born on Sept. 1, 1906, in Deadwood, S.D., Nettie M. Gray was the daughter of Frank Gray and her mother's maiden name was Reed. She attended schools in Delta.
Nettie married George B. Darter on Oct. 21, 1950 in Delta, Colo. After sharing eight loving years of marriage, George preceded Nettie in death in 1958 in Delta.
Nettie was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Delta and especially enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by one niece, Mickie Herford, of Bend, Ore.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Nettie's life will be officiated by Larry Short on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Delta City Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
