Marjorie M. "Marge" Phipps

MONTROSE - Marjorie M. Goble, the daughter of Raymond Goble and Gertie (Osborn) Goble, was born on July 16, 1918, in Healy, Kan. Marge died early Monday morning, Sept. 27, 1999, in her home at Montrose at the age of 81.
She graduated from high school in Conway Springs, Kan., and continued to pursue her education at a business college in Kansas.
Marge married Virgil L. Phipps on March 8, 1941 at Wichita, Kan. Their union was blessed with four daughters. In 1957, the Phipps' family moved to Denver, Colo. In 1963, they moved from Denver to Montrose where they established their home until the times of their deaths.
Prior to her retirement, Marge was employed as assistant personnel director with the Colorado-Ute Electric Association in Montrose. She was involved in the fund raising efforts at the Colorado-Ute Electric Association to start "The Happiness School."
Virgil preceded Marge in death on Jan. 11, 1998, in Montrose. At the time of his death, the couple had celebrated 57 loving years of marriage together.
Marge was a member of the Montrose Christian Church and was a former board member of the Delta-Montrose Vo-Tech Center.
She loved fishing, crocheting, and needlework. She was also an avid cross-word puzzle fan. This very special lady will be remembered for being such a great cook and a wonderful grandmother.
Grateful for having shared Marge's life are her four daughters: Judy and husband Ray Langston, of Montrose; Jane and husband Jon Schieltz, of Beaverton, Ore.; Linda and husband Ken Jones, of Olathe; and Terri and husband Gary McLean, of Montrose.
Marge was the proud and loving grandmother of 11 grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorial Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects for Marge's life will be officiated by Ken Backman, Hospice Chaplain, on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
At Marge's request, cremation preceded the service. Inurnment of the cremains will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Forrest Francis Freeman
World War II Veteran/Pilot
Feb. 5, 1925 - Sept. 25, 1999
MONTROSE - Forrest Francis Freeman, age 74, a retired auto mechanic and a resident of Montrose since February of 1998, died on Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction from injuries he received from a fall on a bicycle.
Forrest Francis Freeman, the son of Irwin T. Freeman and Grace (Lawson) Freeman, was born on Feb. 5, 1925, in Olathe, Colo., where he spent his childhood and attended Olathe schools through the eighth grade. He moved with his family to California in the late 1930s.
Prior to World War II, Forrest was employed by Hughes Aircraft Company. He served his country in the United States Air Force from April of 1943 through November of 1945, in the 487th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, as a Flight Engineer and Gunner on a B17. He was stationed at Lavenham AFB near Ipswich, England. The crew flew 35 missions over Germany. Forrest held the rank of Technical Sergeant and was awarded the EAME Medal, the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Forrest lived in Downey, Bakersfield, and Potter Valley, Calif., until 1966 when he moved to Washington. He then lived in Oregon in the early 1970s before returning to Colorado.
Following his military service, Forrest worked 10 years for General Motors Corporation in California and as an automotive mechanic at various car dealerships in California and Oregon before operating a Texaco Station in Tigard, Ore.
Forrest married Sandra Reed on Dec. 26, 1986, in Newport, Ore.
He was an inventor of several auto-related products and tools and had several patents. He had been a private pilot since 1980.
Forrest was a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, the American Navion Society, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and belonged to Toastmasters International for many years.
He enjoyed flying and traveling with his wife, Sandra. Forrest was a quiet, gentle person, and a loving husband, father, and brother.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Freeman, of Montrose; three sons: Mark Freeman, of Portland, Ore.; Phillip Freeman and Glen Freeman, both of Vancouver, Wash.; Bryce Freeman, of the Philippines; one daughter, Karen Freeman, of Vancouver, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Ethel and husband Chris Schlegel, of Vancouver, Wash.; Mona Byyny, of Lakewood, Calif; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Fern Brandenburg.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Forrest's life will be officiated by Pastor Lowell Uda, of the Olathe United Methodist Church, on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. in the Olathe Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions, in Forrest's memory, may be made to the Salvation Army.
William "Harry" Dobbs

GRAND JUNCTION - William "Harry" Dobbs, age 91, formerly of Montrose, Craig, Steamboat Springs, and Meeker died peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning, Sept. 25, 1999 at Integrated Health Services Mantey Heights in Grand Junction where he had lived for the past year.
William Harry Dobbs, the son of Claud and Clarissa (Wells) Dobbs, was born on July 7, 1908, in Meeker, Colo. The family later moved to Kansas where he attended school. Harry was an outdoorsman of the old order. He quit school after the eighth grade when his teacher insisted he not trap skunks if he was going to come to school. It seemed an easy decision to him. Skunk hides brought 35 cents each!
After returning to Colorado with his parents and sisters, Harry made his living during the Depression years as a fur trapper and caretaker on the Flattops in the winter and as a wrangler in the summer at the dude ranch at Trapper's Lake. It was there he met and worked crossword puzzles with Bonnie Mills, the local school teacher, who also worked at the dude ranch one summer. Harry and Bonnie were married in July of 1935.
He began working as a beaver trapper for the Colorado Game and Fish Department in 1938. He was promoted to Fur Inspector in Routt County. He then was area supervisor in Craig and finally retired in 1974 as assistant manager of the Southwest Region for the Colorado Division of Wildlife in Montrose.
In the 1940s, Harry was known as an avid snowshoe racer and challenged his skiing counterparts in the Forest Service to a cross-country race. Harry won by a decent margin to the surprise of many in the ski town of Steamboat.
In the 1950s, he joined the local rifle club. He and Bonnie participated in shooting matches throughout the area and the state, often returning with a live turkey or two as well as medals! Harry was a first class marksman and represented Colorado as a civilian at the National Rifle Matches in Ohio in 1959. His sharpshooter team returned with first place medals.
Survivors include two daughters: Carolyn and husband Charles Hendrickson; Nancy and husband Sterling Hurst, all of Grand Junction; three sons: Gilbert, of Alaska and Arizona; Milton, of Golden; Roger, of Westminster; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Iola Hicken, of Meeker; and Lucile Hicken, of Arkansas.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Nellie and Irene; by the mother of his children: Bonnie Mills Dobbs, who died in 1971 after 35 years of marriage; his second wife, Minta Foster Dobbs, who died in 1992 after 19 years of marriage; and two grandsons: Charlie Hurst, who died in 1975; and Wesley Dobbs, who died in 1982.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Harry's life will be officiated on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Harry, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Willard Wilson
A Jack of All Trades
June 16, 1913 - Sept. 26, 1999
MONTROSE - Willard Wilson, age 86, of Montrose, died Sunday evening, Sept. 26, 1999, in the Integrated Health Services of Mesa Manor in Grand Junction.
Willard Wilson was born on June 16, 1913, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Charles Wilson and Lorna (Roach) Wilson. He spent his childhood in Colorado.
In 1926, Willard moved to Wray, Colo. He owned and operated a ranch on Log Hill for 20 to 30 years. When he stopped ranching, he moved to Gunnison. For approximately 30 years, Willard was employed as a logger for Montrose and Gunnison Counties. He then drove a truck for Hawks Trucking for five or six years and worked as a high school janitor for four or five years. Willard was a jack of all trades during his lifetime, even being a caretaker for Lorella Gallegos in Montrose, and was a truck driver up until a month before his death.
He married Dorothy Ritchey who preceded him in death and is buried in Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.
Willard loved mechanic work, fishing, hunting, the outdoors, and animals. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include four sons: Willard Wilson Jr., Robert L. Wilson and wife Rita; Bert Wilson and wife Bonnie, all of Montrose; Charles W. Wilson and wife Ronnie, of California; three daughters: Ethel Wilson, of Nebraska; Dorothy and husband John Schultz, of Paradox; Betty Jo and husband Russell Kitsmiller, of Montrose; one stepson, Orville Minton and wife Gayle, of Washington; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents and wife, Willard was also preceded in death by one sister.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Willard's life will be officiated by The Rev. John Martin on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.

Alice "Fern" Tolman
Loved Accounting
May 30, 1927 - Sept. 24, 1999
MONTROSE Alice "Fern" Tolman, age 72, a resident of Montrose since 1997, died Friday morning, Sept. 24, 1999, at her home in Montrose.
Born in Edom, Texas on May 30, 1927, Alice Fern Shotts was the daughter of Troy B. Shotts and Velma (Ford) Shotts. She grew up in East Texas and spent a lot of time on her grandfather's farm. She moved with her family to Van, Texas, and at the age of 16 she graduated from high school there.
Fern then moved to Dallas, Texas for employment where she met Ronald O. Tolman. Fern and Ronald were married on Feb. 22, 1946, and were privileged to celebrate 53 loving years of marriage together.
After their marriage in 1946, the Tolmans spent the next 30 years at Dallas. They then moved to Heath, Texas, just east of Dallas, where they resided for 18 years.
Fern was employed at various office jobs and developed a love for accounting and spent most of her life in that profession until her retirement.
Following their retirements, Fern and Ronald moved to Almont, Colo. and in 1997 established their home in Montrose where Fern lived until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Fern loved yard work and landscaping, along with gardening. She was a creative person and enjoyed decorating and was blessed with a talent for sewing and making things with her hands. Among the many loves in her life, Fern loved the outdoors, fishing, boating, water sports, and traveling after her retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald O. Tolman, of Montrose; one sister, Carolyn Hiebert, of Arlington, Texas; and two nephews.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Fern's life were officiated on Monday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Interment followed the service in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery
in Bluffdale, Utah.
Local arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
Curtis Dell Petersen
A Kind, Gentle Person
June 20, 1964 - Sept. 10, 1999
RIDGWAY - Curtis Dell Petersen, age 35, of Ridgway, died on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Ouray.
Curtis Dell Petersen was born in Murray, Utah on June 20, 1964, the son of LaMarr Petersen and Jean (Holrgren) Petersen. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Olathe. He graduated from college in 1984 in Laramie, Wyo.
Curtis married Sherry Linscott on Aug. 25, 1996.
While living in Glenwood Springs, Curtis was employed as a convenience store manager. He then worked at "Peppers" Restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah and was also employed at City Market and Country Kitchen in Montrose. After moving to Mesa, Ariz., Curtis worked in concrete for a construction company and at the time of his death was managing the Ouray Livery Barn in Ouray.
Curtis' special interests were old pickups and Corvettes. He loved and enjoyed horses and being in the outdoors hiking, camping, and target shooting. Curtis was a very kind and gentle person. He was a very hard worker and enjoyed helping people any way he could. He will be so deeply missed by his family, friends, and co-workers.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Petersen, of Ridgway; his parents, LaMarr and Jean Petersen, of New Braunfels, Texas; one brother, Ken Petersen, of Fullerton, Calif.; one sister, Shauna Humphreys, of Jordan, Utah; a grandmother in California; and various aunts and uncles.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Curtis' life will be officiated by Ken Backman, Hospice Chaplain, on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.

MONTROSE - Joseph Ryan "Joey" Larson, age 20, of 68840 Kinikin Rd., a resident of Montrose since 1991, died on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in a car accident in California.
Joseph Ryan Larson, the son of Peter L. Larson and Karen L. (Lambert) Larson, was born on Nov. 3, 1978, in Superior, Wis., where he spent his childhood, received his GED, and grew to adulthood.
In 1981, Joey moved from Wisconsin to Grand Junction where he resided until 1991. He then moved to Montrose, making his home here until the time of his death.
Joey was a student at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.
During his 20 years of life, Joey showed an enthusiasm and love for music, camping, and the outdoors.
Survivors include his father, Peter Larson and wife Maureen, of Montrose; his mother, Karen and husband Todd Sanders, of Grand Junction; one brother, Jason Larson and Sarah James, of Fort Collins; two sisters: Angie Barker, of Fort Collins; Jessica Larson, of Montrose; and two nieces: Acacia and Morgan Barker.
Other family survivors include his grandparents: Peter and Arlene Cassidy, of Montrose; Barbara Larson, of Superior, Wis.; and Devere and Darlene Lambert, of Salem, Fla.
Joey was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Oscar Larson.
Memorial Services to honor and celebrate Joey's life will be officiated by Pastor Mark Fulmer on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Manuel Quintana Garcia
West End Uranium Miner
March 9, 1933 - Sept. 29, 1999
MONTROSE - Manuel Quintana Garcia, age 66, a resident of Montrose for 40 years, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Manuel Quintana Garcia was born in Alamosa, Colo. on March 9, 1933, the son of Celestino Garcia and Mary (Narnjo) Garcia. He spent his childhood in the San Luis Valley.
Manuel married Nellie Montano in Canon City, Colo., and three sons and two daughters were born to their union. After 28 years of marriage, Manuel and Nellie were divorced.
Prior to his retirement, Manuel was employed as a uranium miner in the West End of Montrose County.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose.
Among Manuel's loves in life that brought him happiness were: His family and grandchildren, cars, the Denver Broncos, fishing, social gatherings, and cooking. Manuel will be remembered for always having thumbs up for everyone.
Survivors include his former wife and mother of his children, Nellie Montano, of Montrose; three sons: Micheal Garcia, of Montrose; Gilbert Garcia and wife Susan, of Battlement Mesa; Mare Garcia and wife Mandy, of Montrose; and two daughters: Kim and husband Chris Samora; and Tammy and husband Steve Garcia, all of Montrose.
Manuel was the proud and loving grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Micheal S. Garcia, Suzanne C. Samora, Matthew S. Rendon, Allisa L. Samora, Kelsey B. Samora, Kayla A. Garcia, Taran S. Garcia, Mariah D. Garcia, Megan K. Garcia, and Izaac M. Garcia.
Other family survivors include one brother, James Garcia and family, of Twin Falls, Idaho; and one sister, Bernadette Chacon, of Grand Junction.
Manuel was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Memorial Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Manuel's life will be officiated on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. in the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
