MONTROSE - Sybil M. Stealey, a homemaker and rancher, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose the day after celebrating her 88th birthday.
Sybil M. Downen was born in Grand Valley, Colo. on Sept. 21, 1911, the daughter of Charles Downen and Mamie (Craven) Downen. She spent her childhood in Grand Valley and Rifle.
Sybil married Vaughn L. Stealey on Dec. 10, 1940, in Moab, Utah. After their marriage, Sybil and Vaughn moved to Cow Creek where they made their home until Vaughn's death in August of 1981 at Montrose.
Following her husband's death, Sybil moved to Montrose in 1982 where she made her home until the time of her death.
Sybil loved crocheting, fishing, and playing cards.
Survivors include one brother, Virgil Downen and wife Inez, of Grand Junction; three sisters: Peggy Lloyd and Opal Cline, both of Montrose; Zella and husband Lloyd Wonderley, of Rifle; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel and will continue until service time at 11 a.m.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Sybil's life will be officiated by Ken Backman, Hospice Chaplain, on Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose, 802 Main St., Montrose, Colo. 81401; telephone (970) 249-2121.

Darline M. Matthews
An Inspiration to Everyone
Jan. 12, 1926 - Sept. 18, 1999
FRUITA - Former Olathe resident, Darline M. Matthews, age 73, of Fruita, died on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Family Health West at Fruita.
Darline M. Hartness was born in Omaha, Neb. on Jan. 12, 1926, the daughter of Elbert L. Hartness and Ruth (Doty) Hartness. She spent her early childhood in Omaha before moving with her family to Fontana, Calif. around the age of 7.
Shortly after moving to Fontana at the age of 7, Darline met Phillip W. Matthews. Over the years they fell in love and were married at her parents' home in Fontana on June 10, 1943, the same day Darline graduated from the Chaffey High School in Fontana. Their union was blessed with four daughters and this year in June they were privileged to celebrate 56 loving years of marriage.
Following their marriage, Phillip and Darline established their home in Fontana until 1965 when they moved to Las Vegas, Nev. where they operated a metal and paper recycling business.
After making their home in Las Vegas until 1984, Phillip and Darline moved to Olathe, Colo. to be closer to their family. While living in Olathe, Darline baked pastries for local auctions in town and made a number of family wedding and anniversary cakes.
She loved cooking meals for her family and friends, and dedicated her life to helping people whether it was her family or friends. With her positive and optimistic attitude, she was an inspiration to everyone. Above all, Darline loved and delighted in taking care of her family. She will be so deeply missed by her family and friends.
Survivors grateful to have shared Darline's life include her husband, Phillip W. Matthews, of Fruita; four daughters: Cyndy Rowan, of Bandon, Ore.; Mylissa Franks, of Olathe; Phyllis Matthews-Wolfington, of Vancouver, Wash.; and Lin Matthews, of Coos Bay, Ore.
Darline was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren; and the great-grandmother of 19 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Ivan Hartness, of Sequim, Wash.
Darline was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Robert Hartness, Russell Hartness, and Don Hartness.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and to pay respects to Darline's life will be officiated by Pastor Tim Wade on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Sue Garner
A Very Special Lady
Nov. 2, 1934 - Sept. 16, 1999
HOTCHKISS - Sue Garner, age 64, a homemaker and a resident of Hotchkiss, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 16, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Sue Cole was born in Boulder, Colo. on Nov. 2, 1934, the daughter of Cass Cole and Susie (Barnes) Cole.
Sue married Roy Garner on Sept. 16, 1954, in Montrose. Their union was blessed with two sons. Sue died on her and Roy's 45th wedding anniversary.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and latchwork. Sue was a very special lady who loved her family and relished taking care of her home and yard. She had a way of making those around her feel important. Sue's family and all who knew her feel blessed to have known her and will miss her greatly.
Survivors include her husband Roy Garner, of Hotchkiss; two sons: Allen Garner, of Hotchkiss; Miles Garner, of Glendale, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
Other family survivors include her parents, Cass and Susie Cole, of Delta; two brothers: Ken Cole and Ivan "Butch" Cole, both of Cedaredge; and two sisters, Carol Lanzl, of Grand Junction; and Cassie Skelton, of Delta.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Sue's life will be officiated by Paul Nystrom on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Christopher James Foster
Had Just Learned To "Wink"

MONTROSE - Christopher James Foster, age 3, of Montrose, died Monday morning, Sept. 20, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Christopher James Foster, the son of Apache James Foster and Barbara (Cook) Foster, was born on July 29, 1996, in Montrose, Colo.
He lived his three short years of life in Montrose until the time of his death.
Christopher always had a smile, loved to dance, and had just learned to "wink." He didn't seem to be afraid of anything and was such an outgoing child who loved water, sprinklers, puddles, and his little house pets. Christopher especially enjoyed playing with "daddy's tools."
Survivors grateful to have shared Christopher's life include his father and mother, Apache and Barbara Foster, of Montrose; one brother, Gary Davis, of Montrose; his paternal grandparents, Ed and Kristy Foster; great-grandparents: Frances Foster and Patricia Sunde, all of Norwood; Lymon and Dusty Foster, of Texas; aunts and uncles: Verona Duffy, Cricket Cook, Brandy Foster and wife Susan, Edward N. Foster and wife Holly, Sam Proper and wife Shirley; as well as numerous cousins.
Christopher was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Tom and Verona Cook.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Christopher will be officiated by Doug Anderson on Friday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church. The service will conclude at the church.

Mildred Q. Crandell
Homemaker/Excellent Seamstress

MONTROSE - Mildred Corine Quigley Crandell, age 93, a longtime Montrose resident, died on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Colorado Springs. She was a resident of Pikes Peak Manor at the time of her death.
Mildred Corine Quigley was born in Montrose County, Colo., on Oct. 6, 1905, the daughter of Henry and Lucille Quigley. She spent her childhood in DeBeque, graduating from the DeBeque High School.
Mildred married Benjamin R. Crandell on June 9, 1923. They lived in Glenwood Springs and Canon City for several years before settling in Montrose in 1935.
Mildred was a homemaker, excellent seamstress, pianist, organist, and gardener. For many years, she was involved in church and community activities.
Survivors include four grandchildren: Denise Crandell Woody, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Mark Crandell, of Leesburg, Va.; Matthew Crandell, of Woodbridge, Va.; Elise Crandell Dwyer, of Potomac Falls, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren: Justin, Benjamin and Lauren Woody, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Kyle, Bryan, and Danielle Crandell, of Woodbridge, Va.; and Connor Dwyer, of Potomac Falls, Va.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin R. Crandell, in 1974; an infant son, Douglas, in 1928; and two other sons: Gordon, in 1996; and Harry, in 1998.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Mildred's life will be officiated by The Rev. Mike Lundberg, of Valley Baptist Church, on Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Betty Ann Cook

MONTROSE - Betty Ann Cook, a homemaker and resident of Montrose, formerly of Loveland and Berthoud, died on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, in the University Hospital at Denver, 18 days after celebrating her 82nd birthday.
Betty Ann Casady, the daughter of Earl Casady and Rhoena (Murdock) Casady, was born on Sept. 3, 1917, in Milton, Iowa.
Betty Ann was married on Sept. 26, 1949, in Raton, N.M., to Robert Christian Cook. Their union was blessed with two sons and three daughters.
In 1953 the Cooks moved from Brush, Colo. to Loveland. In 1960, they moved to Berthoud and farmed east of there. Betty Ann and Robert moved to Olathe in 1976 and then to Montrose in 1987.
Robert preceded Betty Ann in death on Oct. 28, 1991.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Olathe and Order of the Eastern Star.
Betty Ann especially loved and enjoyed sewing, reading, quilting, playing cards, and collecting dolls and bears.
Survivors grateful to have shared Betty Ann's life include two sons: Tim Cook and wife Bonnie, of Broomfield; Mike Cook, of Leadville; and three daughters: Sue and husband Terry Ingram, of Leadville; Mary and husband Davis Watson, of Norwood; and Rhoena Dobrovolny, of Louisville.
She was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren; as well as the great- and great-great-grandmother of several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Florence Sauerbreit, of Brush; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty Ann was also preceded in death by one brother, Cyrus Casady.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, from noon to 5 p.m. and again on Friday, Sept. 24, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland.
Graveside Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Betty Ann's life will be officiated by The Rev. Raymond Scott, on Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. in the Greenlawn Cemetery
at Berthoud.

Harvey Fred Beall

DELTA - Harvey Fred Beall, age 72, of Delta, died on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in Integrated Health Services in Delta.
Harvey Fred Beall was born in Denver, Colo. on April 18, 1927, the son of Fred and Ona (Messick) Beall.
Harvey served his country in the United States Coast Guard and then worked as a long haul truck driver.
Harvey's marriage ended in divorce.
He was a resident volunteer at Community Care for five years.
Harvey was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Denver.
Survivors include one son, Vincent Wade Beall.
Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Fred Beall; his mother, Ona (Messick) Beall; and one brother, Max Vincent Hoorebeke.
No services are planned at this time.

Louis John Baudino

DURANGO - Louis John Baudino, a Durango native and the son of John and Katie Baudino, was born on April 28, 1910 in Durango, Colo. He died on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Durango, at the age of 89.
Louis was an achiever and enjoyed a busy life. He attended schools in Durango, graduating from Durango High School as valedictorian of the class of 1927. He was a graduate of Colorado University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity.
Louis married Dorothy Stough in 1931 and their union was blessed with two sons. Louis and Dorothy celebrated 68 years of life together.
He started working for Western Colorado Power setting poles on Lime Creek. In 1958, Louis became vice president and general manager at which time he moved to Montrose where he resided until his retirement in 1975. His employees periodically honored him as "Boss of the Year.' He was also president of the Rocky Mountain Electrical League. He and Dorothy moved back to Durango after he retired.
Louis was a Boy Scout leader for many years, president of the Western Colorado Council, earning the Silver Beaver Award. He was president of the Durango Lions Club and Montrose Rotary. He was also District Governor and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
Louis was one of the organizers and the treasurer of the original Spanish Trails Fiesta in Durango for as many years as the Fiesta was active. He was a member of the Durango Chamber of Commerce and president of the State Chamber. He was a life member and a Past Exalted Ruler of Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 and a member of the Cristoforo Colombo Lodge.
Grateful for having shared his life are his widow, Dorothy Baudino, of Durango; and two sons: Louis J. Baudino Jr., of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and John H. Baudino, of Homewood, Ill.
Louis was the proud and loving grandfather of two grandchildren: Michael Baudino and Cari Shanahan, both of Illinois; and the great-grandfather of two great-grandchildren: Katie and Colleen Shanahan.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Frances Wegher and Lena Babey, both of Durango.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in memory of Louis be made to the Hospice in Durango.
Carol Elizabeth Virtanen

1943 - 1999
DELTA - Carol Elizabeth Virtanen, age 56, of Delta, died on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in her home at Delta.
Carol was an artist and a message therapist.
Survivors include three daughters: Meri and husband Jim Faulkner, of Montrose; Elsa and husband Barry Jordan, of Nacogdoches, Texas; and Anna and husband Paul Rodriguez, of Delta.
Carol was the proud and loving grandmother of two grandsons: Timothy Faulkner and Gabriel Rodriguez; and a granddaughter on the way, Carolyne Elizabeth Faulkner.
