DELTA - Lois M. Lange, age 96, a retired art teacher and a resident of Delta, died on Thursday, Sept, 9, 1999.
Lois M. Matthews was born in North Judson, Ind. on May 17, 1903, the daughter of Henry and Florence (Tucker) Matthews. She spent her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in the Indianapolis, Ind. area. She continued to pursue her education at the Indiana School of Fine Arts in Indianapolis, graduating with a degree in Art.
During her lifetime, Lois worked as an art teacher.
She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Denver.
Survivors include two sons: Steve Lange and wife Carol, of Littleton; Joseph Lange and wife Bonnie, of Grand Junction; and two grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Florence E. Matthews, of Southbend, Ind.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents.
No services are planned at this time.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Ralph E. Keep
Korean Conflict Veteran
Jan. 22, 1933 - Sept. 12, 1999
FORT COLLINS - Lifetime Colorado resident Ralph E. Keep, a resident of Fort Collins for 44 years, died on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, in the Poudre Valley Hospital at the age of 66.
Ralph E. Keep, the son of Charles Keep and Concetta (Morone) Keep, was born on Jan. 22, 1933, at St. Charles Mesa, Colo. During his childhood, Ralph was raised in both Montrose and Pueblo. He attended school in Pueblo.
During the Korean Conflict, he served his country in the Tank Division of the United States Army.
Ralph married Dorothy E. Freeman on June 16, 1955, in Greeley, Colo. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters and they celebrated 44 loving years of marriage this year in June.
Ralph was employed as a mobile home park manager.
He was a member and served as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1881 in Cheyenne, Wyo.; and belong to Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053.
Ralph especially enjoyed going to Cloverleaf Dog Track.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy E. Keep, of Fort Collins; and two daughters: Kaycene Hulbert and Roxanne Harris, both of Fort Collins.
Ralph was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Jessica, Jillian, Gary Lee, Teri Jo, Kaylene, and Brenda; and the great-grandfather of nine great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Mary Sanders, of Modesto, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Memorial Services to honor and celebrate Ralph's life will be officiated on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Bohlender Funeral Chapel at Fort Collins, with Military Honors being conducted by American Legion George Beach Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive St., Ft. Collins, Colo. 80524; telephone 970/482-4244.

Jimmie Cortez Hudson
Husband, Father, and the Substitute Janitor for the Delta County School District

HOTCHKISS - A well loved husband, father, and substitute janitor with the Delta County School District, Jimmie Cortez Hudson, age 66, a resident of Hotchkiss for 12 years, died on Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Jimmie Cortez Hudson, the son of Kenneth Boyd Hudson and Dolores Ann "Lora Ann" (Sivil) Hudson, was born on July 27, 1933, in Hartshorne, Okla., where he spent his childhood, graduated from the Hartshorne High School with the class of 1950, and grew to adulthood. He continued to pursue his education at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.
Jimmie served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and did a year and a half of peace-time service during the Vietnam War.
He married Jean F. Blankinship on Jan. 5, 1957 in L'Anse, Mich. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter and celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year in January.
The Hudsons lived in Hotchkiss from 1976 to 1979 and then moved several times before moving back to Hotchkiss from Senecaville, Ohio, 12 years ago, where Jimmie remained until the time of his death.
He retired from the Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Interior. Jimmie was working as a substitute janitor with the Delta County School District.
He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Hotchkiss, Hotchkiss Elks Lodge No. 1807, and the National Rifle Association (NRA). Jimmie was a former volunteer for the Hotchkiss Fire Department, a former fire chief of the Santa Rosa, N.M. Volunteer Fire Department, a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Lake Mills, Wis.; and a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa, N.M. and Charles City, Va.
The pride and joy of Jimmie's life were his seven grandchildren. He also greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and four-wheeling.
Survivors grateful to have shared Jimmie's life include his wife, Jean Hudson, of Hotchkiss; two sons: Danial Hudson and wife Delaine, of Delta; David Hudson and wife Trudy, of Hotchkiss; one daughter, Karen and husband Cliff Lacey, of Hotchkiss; and seven grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, J.W. Hudson and wife Mae, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and one sister, Winnie Flaming, of Olathe.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, K. Hudson; and one sister, Mary Jacobs.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. until noon at the Taylor Funeral Service in Hotchkiss.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Rev. Mike Smith on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Hotchkiss.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Lorene Margaret Hess
Matriarch of Her Family
Oct. 1, 1927 - Sept. 10, 1999
MONTROSE - Lorene Margaret Hess, affectionately known as "Grammy," age 71, of Montrose, died of cancer Friday evening, Sept. 10, 1999, in her home at Montrose.
Lorene Margaret Chitwood, the daughter of William and Katherine (Peters) Chitwood, was born on Oct. 1, 1927, in Durango, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from the Durango High School, and grew to adulthood.
Lorene married Everett Lynn Hess Sr. on Oct. 12, 1951, in Aztec, N.M. Lorene and Everett lived in Grand Junction, Paradox, and Ridgway before establishing their home in Montrose where Everett preceded Lorene in death on Aug. 26, 1998.
Lorene was a homemaker, day care provider, bookkeeper, and a school board member.
She was a member of the Columbine Club, the Colorado Day Care Assn., was a 4-H leader, was in Who's Who of Colorado, served on the Ridgway School Board from 1967 to 1977, kept the books for the Ridgway School for 25 years, and was a day care provider for 25 years.
Lorene's first love was her family and her friends. Her heart was so big that all who knew her loved her. There was never a friend she didn't help, never a child she didn't love, and never a need she didn't try to fulfill. Lorene was the matriarch of her family.
Survivors include two sons: Everett Lynn Hess Jr. and wife Teri, of Craig; Joseph William Hess and wife Janie, of Olathe; one daughter, Lynnda Rene Hess and fiance Glenn Watts, of Montrose; and five grandchildren: Lane Everett Gunn, Dustin William Hess, Amy Michelle Hess, Eric Lynn Hess, and Ryan Lane Hess.
In addition to her parents and husband, Lorene was also preceded in death by one grandson, Curtis James Hess; one sister, Kathy; and one nephew, Jim Chapman.
Memorial Services to honor and celebrate Lorene's life will be officiated on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel at Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Anny Hecker
Lady of Remarkable Courage
June 6, 1913 - Sept. 9, 1999
PAONIA - Paonia resident Anny Hecker, age 86, died of ALS in her home on Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999.
She was born Anny Ludwig on June 6, 1913 in Durnkrut, Austria. After her marriage to Richard Hecker on Aug. 11, 1947, Anny followed Richard and the 86th Air Police (OIC Polish Guard) with the allied forces throughout Western Europe.
In September of 1949, Richard and Anny came to the United States where they lived in Milwaukee, Wis. On Sept. 6, 1955, Richard and Anny became citizens of the United States and in 1984 they moved to Paonia, where Richard still resides.
Anny had many loves and spoke often of hiking in her native Austria as a young girl. She continued walking and hiking up to four miles a day until her disease prevented her from doing so. Anny loved gardening and was well known for her beautiful flower gardens. Anny's two cats, Fluffy and Sushi, were her only "children" and remained by her side to the end.
Anny showed a remarkable courage throughout the course of her life and the duration of her disease. Through it all, her wonderful sense of humor lifted the spirits of all around her. Her selflessness and deep devotion to her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her. Anny's giving spirit continued to the very end. She gave generously to many charities and, in the true spirit of Anny Heckler, she chose to donate her body to the DU Science Center for research into the disease which devastated her body but not her spirit.
Anny is survived by her husband, Richard Hecker; as well as several nieces and many friends.
Anny's Memorial Mass will be officiated on Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia. Anny requested that no arranged flowers be sent, but that flowers from the attendants gardens be brought instead.

William Francis "Bill" Hardwick Jr.
Carpenter, Iron Worker
Aug. 22, 1926 - Sept. 12, 1999
CRAWFORD - Carpenter and iron worker, William Francis "Bill" Hardwick Jr., age 73, a resident of Crawford for 20 years, died on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Born on Aug. 22, 1926 in Amarillo, Texas, William Francis Hardwick Jr. was the son of William Francis Hardwick Sr. and Dorothy Jane (Saunders) Hardwick. He spent his childhood in New Mexico and graduated from the Clovis, N.M. High School. Bill continued to pursue his education at Colorado A & M in Fort Collins, graduating with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
Following World War II, Bill served his country in the United States Army as a part of the occupation forces in Japan. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army.
He married Artie Anna Pierson on Aug. 12, 1979 , in Paonia, Colo. The couple had just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary last month. Bill was previously married to Marilyn Ross.
During his lifetime Bill was employed as a carpenter and iron worker and had lived in Hereford and Port Isabel, Texas prior to moving to Crawford 20 years ago where he remained until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Hotchkiss.
Bill absolutely loved learning about new technology, new processes, natural remedies, and building new things. He was a very loving, kind, generous, and giving man. Bill had one goal: To be the quality of man his dog, Hank, thought he was. He truly believed that God had been very good to him and his response was to be very good to others. Bill will be so deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Artie Anna Hardwick, of Crawford; one son, William Ross Hardwick, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and four daughters: Marsha Hardwick Harris, of San Bernardino, Calif.; Marsy Sue Moore and Gloria Polson, both of Hotchkiss; and Janice Ryan, of Palatine, Ill.
He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of five great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Ted Hardwick, of Alamogordo, N.M.; and one sister, Joan French, of Lubbock, Texas.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pat Lackey.
Cremation has taken place, with services to be held at a later date.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
David Ray Carter
Retired Police Officer
July 18, 1927 - Sept. 9, 1999
MONTROSE - David Ray Carter, age 72, of Olathe, died on Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999 in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. from the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Delta. Inurnment will be held following the service in the Pea Green Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery, Delta.
David Ray Carter was born on July 18, 1927 at Park City, Utah, the son of Ricker C. and Thelma Gustine Stonebreaker Carter.
He graduated from high school in Las Vegas, Nev., and attended Metropolitan Business College in San Bernardino, Calif.
David married Joyce Rae Smith James on July 16, 1952 at Las Vegas, Nev., His wife of 47 years survives.
He started his law enforcement career in Hiawatha, Utah as a reserve deputy while he was working in the superintendent's office at the mine. After that he held law enforcement positions in Grand Junction, Colo.; Las Vegas, Nev..; Fountain, Colo.; and Colorado Springs, Colo., where he retired as a Senior Lieutenant from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
The Carters moved from Colorado Springs to Olathe 11 years ago, where David remained until the time of his death.
He was a member of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Delta, and a life member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
He served his country during World War II and Korea in the Navy.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his daughters, Stephanie and husband Carl Gard, Michelle Lynn Ford; grandsons: David Rick Ramsey and wife Dona; William Lewis, Jeremy Gard, Jason Minor, Ernest Nice; granddaughters: Kelly White and husband Jerry, Naomi Jeann Lewis, Tammy Picozzi; great-grandsons: Sammy White, Michael Picozzi, Sabriel Lewis, Michael Lewis; great granddaughter, Michelle Ann Maling.
Other family survivors include his brother, Robert Carter and sister, Alta and husband Dave Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Rick Carter; daughter, Connie Danielle; great grandson, Max Maling; great-granddaughter Theresa Danielle; and sister Mona Martin.

Maurice Willard Blake
Retired Junior High Teacher

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Former Cedaredge resident, Maurice Willard Blake, age 80, a resident of Green River, Wyo. for the past year and a half, died on Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs, Wyo., shortly after being admitted.
Maurice Willard Blake was born in Pawnee County, Kan. on March 22, 1919, the son of William D. and Myrtle (Williamson) Blake. He attended schools in Larned, Kan. and graduated from the Larned High School with the class of 1936. Maurice then attended college and received his Bachelor's degree in Education.
He married Eunice Munsell on June 6, 1940, in Larned, Kan. Maurice and Eunice's union was blessed with one son and one daughter.
Prior to his retirement in 1978, Maurice was employed as a junior high teacher in Evanston, Wyo.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cedaredge and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Eunice Blake, of Cedaredge; and one son, Stan Blake and wife Jeannie, of Green River, Wyo.
Other family survivors include one brother, Ernest Blake, of Rozel, Kan.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Maureen Kugler, who died in 1992.
A visitation time for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedaredge.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Maurice's life will be officiated on Monday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church at Cedaredge.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with local arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
