MONTROSE - Clement A. Blankenship, age 82, of Montrose, died Sunday morning, Sept. 5, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Clement A. Blankenship, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Elmore) Blankenship, was born on Jan. 3, 1917, in Olathe, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from the Olathe High School, and grew to adulthood.
Clement married Dorothy A. Garrison on Feb. 28, 1950, in Albuquerque, N.M. Clement and Dorothy celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year in February.
Prior to his retirement, Clement was employed as a Technician Specialist with Rocky Mountain Natural Gas for 18 years.
He was a member of the Rotary Club of Olathe.
After his retirement, Clement enjoyed his C.B. radio and his handle was known as "Gadchet Gus." He was also a goldsmith and made custom jewelry. Clement absolutely loved the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Survivors include Clement's wife, Dorothy Blankenship, of Montrose; and one daughter, Cheri Blankenship Tobin, of Colorado Springs.
Clement was the proud and loving grandfather of one grandson, Patrick Tobin and wife LeAnn, of Montrose; and three granddaughters: Judy and husband Jerry Hollingshead; Bridget and husband Joe Bollinger, all of Montrose; and Erin Tobin, of Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Alice and Gladys Blankenship.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Clement's life will be officiated on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. from the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Irene Bingham
Loved Large Family Gatherings

MONTROSE - Irene Bingham, age 91, of Montrose, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose 11 days before she would have turned 92.
Irene Tarr, the fifth of eight children, was born on Sept. 14, 1907, near Belton in Cass County, Mo., the daughter of Frank Bittner and Ruth (Hale) Tarr. In 1912, at the age of 5, Irene moved with her family to Colorado. She graduated from Teachers College High School in 1925 and then went one year to Teachers Normal College at Greeley.
Irene married Art Bingham on Nov. 12, 1927, in Longmont, Colo. Their union was blessed with seven children.
During World War II, the Binghams received an outstanding Farm Family Award from President Roosevelt, and in 1958, Irene's biographical record was entered in that year's edition of Who's Who in Colorado.
In March of 1947, the Binghams moved to a ranch in the Colona area where Irene made her home for 52 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, on Nov. 21, 1963, in Montrose.
Irene was a 55-year member of the Grange Farm organization and served as an officer for many years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 784 for the past 26 years and a member of the Montrose Christian Church. She was also the office manager for the Carpenters Local No. 1156 from 1965 to 1975.
During her 91 years of life, Irene had many interests and hobbies. Her hobbies consisted of volunteering, ceramics, glass making, oil painting, bowling, playing cards, watching baseball games, watching her grandchildren ride their horses, trying out all their new built and rebuilt vehicles, their motorcycles, boats and doing anything else they wanted her to do. Where her children and grandchildren were concerned, Irene trusted them completely and would try anything once. However, she was quick to let them know if she liked it or not.
Irene loved large family gatherings, reunions and any celebration. A large family reunion was held this year on Aug. 15 and 16 to celebrate Irene's upcoming 92nd birthday. She saw many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her first great-great-grandchild, as well as her children and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Survivors include six children: Tom Bingham and wife Leola, of Spring, Texas; Ruthann Ellis, of Lakewood; Lorraine and husband Dallas Sturgeon, of Golden; Jean and husband Mike Scott, of Olathe; Larry Bingham and wife Donna, of Dove Creek; Harlan Bingham and wife Sharon, of Montrose; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Irene is also survived by one sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Irene was also preceded in death by one son, Eldon Bingham, who died shortly after birth; and one son-in-law, Warren Ellis.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Irene's life were officiated by Minister Doug Anderson, Associate Pastor of the Montrose Christian Church, on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment followed the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
James "Lee" Altsman
Korean Conflict Veteran
Jan. 2, 1929 - Sept. 8, 1999
DELTA - James "Lee" Altsman, age 70, a resident of Delta since 1993, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 8, 1999, at his home in Delta.
James Lee Altsman, the son of James W. Altsman and Addie Mae (Baugh) Altsman, was born on Jan. 2, 1929, in Amarillo, Texas, where he spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood.
During the Korean Conflict, Lee served his country in the United States Army.
He married Frankie D. Russell on June 23, 1951, in Clovis, N.M. Lee and Frankie's union was blessed with four daughters and they celebrated 48 loving years of marriage this year in June.
Prior to his retirement, Lee was employed as foreman of a paint manufacturing company.
In 1993, Lee and Frankie moved from Whittier, Calif. to Delta where Lee made his home until the time of his death.
Lee greatly enjoyed traveling in their RV home, as well as camping and fishing. Above all, the love and joy of his life was spending time with his family, children, and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie Altsman, of Delta; two daughters: Terry and husband Ricky Tyndall, of LaHabra Heights, Calif.; Carol and husband Tom Allison, of Delta and Montrose; and five grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Charles Altsman and wife Gerry, of Amarillo, Texas; Nelson "Tex" Altsman and wife Toni, of Kinnear, Wyo.; and one sister, Fredia and husband Don Bartlow, of Amarillo, Texas.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters: Karen Lee Altsman and Kelly Gayle Altsman.
Private family visitation will be held.
Funeral Services to honor and celebrate Lee's life will be officiated by George Senecal on Monday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The services will conclude at the chapel.
Interment will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 17, in the Crestlawn Memorial Park Cemetery
at Riverside, Calif.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Jacqueline Joan Bohte
An Animal Lover

MONTROSE - Jacqueline Joan Bohte, age 66, a homemaker and resident of Montrose for nine years, died on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at her home in Montrose.
Jacqueline Joan Christopher, the daughter of Thomas Edward Christopher and Jean (Gill) Christopher, was born on Aug. 25, 1933, in Denver, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from a Catholic, school and grew to adulthood. Jacqueline continued to pursue her education at Regis University in Denver, earning a degree in Journalism.
In 1954, Jacqueline married Peter Bohte Sr. in Denver. The Bohtes union was blessed with eight children.
They moved to Montrose nine years ago where Jacqueline made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose.
Jacqueline will be remembered as a great animal lover who was always able to pick a great dog. She loved to do things with her hands and loved crafts. She made dolls for the police department and gave the dog catcher collars that she had made. As a young girl, Jacqueline loved horses.
Survivors grateful to have shared Jacqueline's life include her husband, Peter Bohte Sr., of Montrose; four sons: Peter S. Bohte and wife Cindy, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Chris Bohte and wife Roama, of Colorado Springs; Greg Bohte and wife Rhonda, of Grand Junction; Patrick Bohte, of Montrose; and four daughters: Jean M. Bohte, of Aurora; Mary and husband Ron Molinaro; Debbie Bohte, all of Denver; and Monica Bohte, of Evans.
Jacqueline was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren: Domica Jordan, Jessica Paul, Dina Jordan, Kim Bohte, Billy Bohte, Rachel Molinaro, Shawn Richards, Amber Bohte, and Michele Bohte.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.
Vigil for the deceased will be recited on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose.
Funeral Mass in remembrance and to honor Jacqueline's life will be celebrated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Friday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the dirction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Viola June (Annear) Helmericks

AUSTIN - Former longtime Montrose resident, Viola June (Annear) Helmericks, age 77, of Austin, died Monday morning, Sept. 6, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Viola June Annear, the daughter of Charlie Annear and Mary Alice (Brown) Annear, was born on June 3, 1922, in Holly, Colo. She spent her childhood in Syracuse, Kan., and graduated from Montrose County High School.
June married John Helmericks on Nov. 1, 1946 and their union was blessed with three sons and one daughter. June and John would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year in November.
June lived most of her adult life in Montrose and had moved to Austin, Colo. just prior to her death.
She was a member of the Montrose Christian Church.
June was a homemaker who greatly enjoyed her family and friends. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, and collecting antique dishes.
Survivors include her husband, John Helmericks, of Austin; one daughter, Marcia Ann and husband Terry Tormey, of Grand Junction; two sons: David Helmericks and wife Katie, of Riverside, Calif.; Michael Helmericks, of Ft. Collins; and two grandchildren: Caleb and Emily Tormey, of Grand Junction.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Dorothy Herring, of Naturita; and Shirley Cook, of Montrose.
June was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John Franklin Helmericks II; and one granddaughter, Hanah Jane Tormey.
Memorial Services to honor and celebrate June's life will be officiated by Minister Tim Smith on Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Mardell Gleason King
QUINTON, Ala. - Longtime Montrose and Durango resident, Mardell Gleason King, age 66, died on Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in Quinton, Ala.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mardell's life were officiated on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Quinton.
A private family Memorial Service to honor and celebrate Mardell's life will be held in Durango.

Mardell is survived by her husband, Charles L. King, of Quinton, Ala.; two sons: Steve Gregg and wife Cleo; Delvin Gregg and wife Darla, all of Durango; three grandchildren: Heather and husband Ken Tarr, of Cortez; Diedre Gregg and Matthew Gregg, both of Durango; and two great-grandchildren: Kenna and Kyla Tarr, both of Cortez.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Gary Gleason, of Delta; Gene Gleason, of Hays, Kan.; and one sister, Donna and husband Robert Hardy, of Camarillo, Calif.
Mardell was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Minnie Gleason; and two brothers: Omar Gleason and Edward Gleason.
Richard Martinez

MONTROSE - World War II veteran and retired electrical wholesale buyer, Richard Martinez, age 75, a resident of Montrose for the past eight years, died on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at his home in Montrose.
Richard Martinez was born in Chimayo, N.M. on Jan. 30, 1924, the son of Agapito and Juanita Martinez. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Montrose. At the age of 26, Richard moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.
During World War II, Richard entered the United States Navy on May 17, 1943, serving as a Seaman Apprentice on the USS Princeton CV 37. His main civilian occupation was being a bomb loader. On Jan. 27, 1946, he entered the United States Army. Richard served his country as a heavy machine gunner in Northern France and Central Europe.
In 1947, he married Carmen Nolan in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Montrose.
Richard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose, the Brotherhood of Electricial Workers of American, a nation-wide group.
Richard absolutely loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his yard. His greatest love and joy in life was his family. Richard will be greatly missed my all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen Martinez, of the family home in Montrose; one son, Garey Martinez and wife Aneta, of Montrose; one daughter, Marie and husband Bob Schreck, of Plymouth, Minn.; and one granddaughter.
Other family survivors include one sister, Clara and husband Mike Gallegos, of Montrose; as well as many nieces and nephews in New Mexico and Colorado.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; Frank, Thomas, and Canuto Martinez; and one sister, Margarita Deaguerio.
Vigil for the deceased will be recited on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass in remembrance and to honor Richard's life will be celebrated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Gowen, Ed Ulibarri, William Herrera, David Gallegos, Joe Herrera, and Gilbert Herrera, with Steve Martinez and Mike Gallegos serving as honorary pallbearers.

Harry Orley Patterson
A Uranium Miner, Welder

DELTA - Harry Orley Patterson, age 60, a resident of Delta since 1994, died Friday morning, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home in Delta after a long battle with cancer.
Harry Orley Patterson, the son of James Franklin Patterson and Bernice Mable (Howlett) Patterson, was born on May 6, 1939 in Nucla, Colo., where he went to school and grew to adulthood.
Harry Orley Patterson was a grandson of the late Franklin Lee Patterson and Bertha E. (Kelley) Patterson.
Harry served his country in the United States Marines from 1960 to 1964.
He married Virginia Altena Smith on Sept. 22, 1972, in Moab, Utah. Harry and Virginia would have celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary this year on Sept. 22. Virginia had three sons and one daughter from a previous marriage. There were no children born to Harry and Virginia's union of nearly 27 years.
Prior to Harry's ailing health, he worked in the uranium mines as a maintenance miner, and as a welder for different companies.
In 1994, Harry and Virginia moved from Oregon to Delta, where Harry made his home until the time of his death.
Harry loved fishing, hunting, camping, rock collecting, and the great outdoors. He especially enjoyed his family, joking around, and playing music. He could play anything he picked up, but his favorites were the guitar and harmonica. Harry and Virginia really enjoyed playing for nursing homes. Harry will be greatly missed by all how knew and loved him. His music and jokes will also be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of sharing them in his life.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Altena (Smith) Patterson, of the Delta family home; one stepdaughter, Alberta Zimmermann, of Kansas; and three stepsons: Jess Robinson, of Minnesota; Rick Robinson, of Delta; and Louis Robinson, of Oklahoma.
Other family survivors include three brothers: Jim Ross, of Rawlins, Wyo.; Arthur Anderson, of Nebraska; Bobby Raddizz, of California; seven sisters: Florence (Patterson) Vasquez, of Grand Junction; Develva Mae (Patterson) Austin; Erma (Patterson) Knox; Madge (Ross) Rogers, all of Montrose; Debbie Wilson, of Oregon; Marlene Shrock, of Denver; Laveta (Patterson) Pacheco, of Grand Junction, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin and Bernice Mable (Howlett) Patterson; four brothers: James "Jim" Patterson, William "Bill" Patterson, Floyd Patterson, Charles "Chuck" Patterson; two sisters: Edith (Patterson) Boring, Maxine Patterson; and nieces and nephews.
