Mariella Hinman

MONTROSE - Mariella Hinman, age 76, of Montrose, died on Monday, April 5, 1999 at the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Montrose Valley Funeral Home of Montrose.
Mariella Hinman was born on Jan. 29, 1923 at Canon City, Colo., the daughter of Roy L. Hinman and Edna McClure Hinman.
Miss Hinman graduated from the University of Colorado in 1944. Upon graduation, she began work with the Mountain Bell Telephone Company in Boulder, where she continued to work for almost 36 years in various capacities. She retired on Feb. 19, 1980.
In September 1988, Miss Hinman moved to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Miss Hinman, may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Erlinda Lopez
Loved Caring for Family
Nov. 13, 1917 - April 5, 1999
MONTROSE - Longtime Montrose resident, Erlinda Lopez, age 81, died of natural causes at the residence of her daughter, Ethel Quintana, in Grand Junction on Monday, April 5, 1999.
A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 9 at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose, with Father Dan Huber and Father Kernan officiating.
Interment will follow at the Grand View Cemetery
of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Montrose Valley Funeral Home of Montrose.
Erlinda Garcia was born on Nov. 13, 1917 at Alamosa, Colo., the daughter of Epifanio Garcia and Encarnacion Ruybal Garcia. She spent her childhood received her education and grew to adulthood in the San Luis Valley.
After high school graduation, Miss Garcia worked in a grocery store in Alamosa.
On Oct. 30, 1944 she married Presciliano (Pres) Lopez at Albuquerque, N.M. The couple moved to Montrose where they made their home for 55 years. Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 1998.
Mrs. Lopez was first and foremost a homemaker, caring for her family. She also worked outside the home as a cook for the Chipeta Cafe, the Gay Johnson Restaurant, and the Shanty Drive-In. She was active in MADA, and for a number of years she was the kitchen manager for the group which sponsored the senior luncheon at the MADA center, retiring in the early 1990s.
She and her husband were active parents. She loved to bake, can, cook and sew for her family. When the children would return from school they would often find their mother in the kitchen in the center of a storm of cinnamon rolls, pies and the ingredients meant for cakes.
In addition to her family, she loved nature and spent as much time as possible in her yard with the flowers and fruit trees, caring for her roses, raspberry bushes and especially her zinnias.
Mrs. Lopez was typical of someone who had gone through the Depression, recycling everything before it became fashionable. She would make something out of nothing for family and friends and the church.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose and enjoyed church activities, especially Bible class.
Mrs. Lopez is survived by her sons, Phillip Lopez of Colorado Springs, Orlando Lopez of Montrose; daughters, Olivia Martinez of Montrose, Christine Dasko of Trinidad, Ethel Quintana of Grand Junction; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include a sister, Juanita Vigil of Montrose.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lopez was preceded in death by nine brothers and one sister.
Louisa Hatten Hollingshead
One of 10 Siblings
Oct. 15, 1912 - March 30, 1999
PARKER - Former Montrose resident, Louisa Hatten Hollingshead, age 86, a resident of Parker for 10 years, died Tuesday afternoon, March 30, 1999, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Delbert Isom, at Parker. Louisa was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker.
Louisa Hatten Batte, one of 10 siblings, was born in Plainview, Texas, on Oct. 15, 1912, the daughter of William Robert and Florence Lucille (Sherrod) Batte. Louisa spent her early childhood on the family farm in Mayhill, N.M., and attended school in Cloudcroft, N.M.
At the age of 18, Louisa married Charles Fredrick Hollingshead on Aug. 2, 1930. After their marriage they moved to the Greeley area for a time, working on different farms and ranches. They then spent some time in Gunnison and then moved to Uravan where Charles worked for Union Carbide, retiring after 18 years with the company.
After his retirement, Charles and Louisa moved to Montrose and built a new home , where Charles preceded Louisa in death in 1982. Louisa remained in their Montrose home for seven years before moving to Parker, Colo. to be with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Delbert Isom. She was also surrounded by her grandchildren; son, Don and family, and was lovingly cared for by her granddaughter Stacy and other family members.
Louisa loved to raise flowers and have a garden wherever she lived. She also enjoyed reading books and doing needlepoint. The things closest to her heart were her children all five of them and her grandchildren who she loved dearly.
Survivors include four sons: Wayne Hollingshead, of Warren, Wis.; Don Hollingshead, of Parker; Dave Hollingshead, of Delta; William "Bill" Hollingshead, of Montrose; one daughter, Betty Isom, of Parker; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
All of Louisa's siblings, three brothers and six sisters, her parents, and husband are deceased.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, April 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Louisa's life will be officiated by Pastor Tim Wade, of the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose, on Tuesday, April 6, at 2 p.m. from the Montroes Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Lael Sybil (Cross) Kettle-Underwood
Former MMH Employee
March 13, 1937 - March 28, 1999
EADS - Former longtime Montrose resident, Lael Sybil (Cross) Kettle-Underwood, age 62, died of a long illness Sunday afternoon, March 28, 1999, at her home in Eads.
Lael Cross, the daughter of Archie and Frances (Sloan) Cross, was born on March 13, 1937, in Montrose, Colo., where she grew up, received her education, and made her home until moving to Eads, Colo. in 1997.
Lael married (Lester) Wayne Kettle on Nov. 8, 1958. They made their home in Ridgway and Montrose. Wayne preceded Lael in death on Nov. 23, 1969.
On June 6, 1975, Lael married Ernest Underwood and they made their home in Montrose. Ernest preceded Lael in death on June 18, 1986.
Lael was employed with Montrose Memorial Hospital for 30 years, until January of 1997.
She was a dedicated member of the First Assembly of God in Montrose and was also very involved in the activities of Eads Assembly of God during her time in Eads with her son Larry and family.
During her life, Lael worked with many people and made many dear friends. She loved the outdoors and had many interests. She was a very dedicated and loving mother to her children.
Survivors include four children: Shawna Lynn (Kettle) and husband Scott Allmon, of Glenwood Springs; Douglas Duane Kettle and wife Brenda, of Rathdrum, Idaho; Larry Dean Kettle and wife Marilyn, of Eads; and Danie Lea (Underwood) and husband Scott Brew.
Lael was the proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Donna Lee Heiden and Idane Gibbons; one brother, Duane Cross; and one sister-in-law, Erika Gordon, of Florida.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, Lael was also preceded in death by one son, Darrel Wayne Kettle, who was born and died on March 9, 1960; a granddaughter, Rachel R. Kettle, who was born and died on Dec. 9, 1988; and three brothers: Don Cross, Dale Cross, and Clifford Cross.
A service of remembrance and celebration was officiated by The Revs. Ron Frierson and Larry Kettle on Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m. from the Eads Assembly of God Church.
Special music was provided by the Eads Assembly of God Worship Team, Kathy Shade and Pam Frierson.
Casketbearers were Geleslie King, Tony Jensen, Harvey Shade, Walt Immer, Rich Hockett, and Larry Wyatt.
The service concluded at the church.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Lael's life were officiated by The Revs. Keith Howard, Robert Smith, and Phil Neely on Wednesday, March 31, at 10 a.m. from the First Assembly of God Church in Montrose.
Musical selections were provided by Carma Grimes and Marilyn Wyatt and Charlie Wagner. Lael's family also provided musical selections.
Serving as casketbearers were Gordon Blay, Tom Grimes, Bill Archer, Bill Ross, Sam Brim, and Doug Chaffin.
Interment followed the Montrose service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with local arrangements handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home and Eads' arrangements handled under the direction of Brown Funeral Home of Eads.

Carolyn Bridgewater
43-Year Eckert Homemaker
April 21, 1930 - April 12, 1999
ECKERT - Carolyn Bridgewater, age 68, a homemaker and resident of Eckert for 43 years, died on Monday, April 12, 1999, in her Eckert home nine days before she would have celebrated her 69th birthday.
Carolyn Burtard, the daughter of Matthew J. and May R. (Ryan) Burtard, was born on April 21, 1930, in Denver, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Carolyn married Roy Bridgewater on June 26, 1949, in Denver. Their union was blessed with two daughters and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year in June.
In 1956, she moved from Lakewood in to Eckert where she remained until the time of her death.
Carolyn was a member of the Eckert Presbyterian Church.
She loved her family and enjoyed making ceramics, oil painting, and art work.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Bridgewater, of Eckert; and two daughters: Karima "Carol Lynn" Mansour, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Joyce and husband Ken Ballard, of Cedaredge.
Carolyn was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren: Daniel and Sam, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Christy and Bobby, of Cedaredge.
Other family survivors include one brother, Wilbur Burtard, of Denver; and one sister, Edna Mae Kenison, of Arizona.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Carolyn's life will be officiated by The Rev. Grady Allison on Saturday, April 17, at 11 a.m. from the Eckert Presbyterian Church in Eckert.
Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery
at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

John Duane Cheney
Wife and Son His Greatest Loves
May 9, 1951 - April 3, 1999
REXFORD, Kan. - John Duane Cheney, age 47, the youngest of four children, was born on May 9, 1951, in St. Thomas Hospital at Colby, Kan., the son of William Allen "Bill" and Blanche Louise (Turrell) Cheney. He died early Saturday morning, April 3, 1999, the day before Easter Sunday in the Citizens Medical Center at Colby, Kan. after a brave battle against cancer.
From the time he was a little boy John was a very strong-willed child, and he matured into a strong-willed man. He grew up on his parents' farm north of Rexford, where he learned to farm and raise cattle working beside his father.
John attended Vickers School, a one-room country school with one teacher for all eight grades, a few miles from his family home. Vickers School was closed at the end of John's seventh grade year and he continued his education in Rexford. In May of 1969, John graduated from the Rexford High School. He enjoyed playing basketball during and after high school. John, his neighbors, and friends played many basketball practices and games in the hayloft of the barn at the Cheney farm. He also enjoyed singing and playing the guitar in his later teenage years and early 20s.
On April 2, 1961, John was baptized by Rev. Norman Linhart and became a member of the Rexford Community Church.
During his senior year of high school, John met Phyllis Jean Dahl of Colby, the love of his life, and they were married on Aug. 9, 1969, in the First Baptist Church at Colby, Kan. John and Phyllis' union was blessed with one son, Allen Scott Cheney, and they were so privileged to have shared almost 30 years of marriage.
John and Phyllis established their home on John's family farm where he farmed, raised cattle, did mechanic work, and pumped oil wells for West Kansas Oil.
John was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved to hunt, fish, and work on race cars. He had a passion for guns, but, John's greatest joy was to get on the tractor and turn up the soil. He loved the smell of the freshly turned up earth.
John's faith in God was very solid as he totally trusted and loved his Lord. He was a very brave man and accepted whatever was given to him in this life.
Besides God, the closest thing to John's heart were his two greatest loves in life: His wife, best friend, and prayer partner, Phyllis; and his son, Allen, who was the pride of his life.
John will be so deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His presence could fill a room, as well as his laughter. If our love could have saved him, we would still have John today.
Survivors very grateful to have shared John's life include his wife, Phyllis Cheney; his son, Allen Scott Cheney; his mother, Blanche Cheney; and his special granddog, Ace, all of Rexford, Kan.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Marilyn and husband Alvin Korte, of Garden City, Kan.; Lois Ann Hake, of Montrose; one brother-in-law, Jay Dahl and wife Nancy, of Rexford, Kan.; two sisters-in-law: Vicki Barnett, of Colby, Kan.; Kay and husband Mike Petersen, of Rexford, Kan.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends including his special devoted friend, Terry Gotchall, of Colby, who spent every Friday with him.
John was preceded in death by his older brother, William Earl Cheney, age 19, April 7, 1968; his father, Bill Cheney, Feb. 8, 1988; one nephew, Tommie Korte, age 27, Nov. 13, 1992; one brother-in-law, Gary "Barney" Barnett, age 46, May 16, 1993; a nephew through marriage, Tim Carl, age 34, May 31, 1995; his father-in-law, Jay Dahl, May 11, 1996; and his mother-in-law, Donna Dahl, Feb. 18, 1998.
A memorial fund in John's name has been established at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 South Country Club, Colby, Kan. 67701.
A celebration of John's life was officiated by Pastor Gary Taylor and Pastor Lane Purcell on Tuesday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rexford Community Church.
Cremation had taken place, with the service concluding at the church.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel of Colby, Kan.
Graveside Services and interment of the ashes was conducted by Pastor Lane Purcell on Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. in the Rexford Cemetery.
