Clarence E. Hutchinson
He Lived For His Family!
March 30, 1904 - March 13, 1999
PAONIA - Clarence E. Hutchinson, age 94, a resident of Paonia since 1954, died on Saturday, March 13, 1999, in the Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center 17 days before he would have celebrated his 95th birthday. Clarence was a retired railroad worker as well as a farmer and rancher.
Clarence E. Hutchinson, the son of Rolland E. and Hannah K. (Minor) Hutchinson, was born on March 30, 1904, in Franktown, Douglas County, Colo., where he spent his boyhood. He graduated from high school and grew to adulthood in Franktown.
In June of 1922, Clarence moved with his parents and two sisters to Hotchkiss and the North Fork Valley. This area was his home for the next 77 years. For two years after arriving in Hotchkiss, Clarence worked in fruit, haying, and for the D&RGW Railroad.
On May 20, 1924, Clarence married Katherine Elizabeth Reich in Lazear, Colo. The couple were blessed with three children.
Clarence and Katherine made their home on Rogers Mesa then bought a ranch at Midway between Hotchkiss and Paonia where they lived until 1950.
At that time, Clarence moved his family to Somerset where he was section foreman for the D&RGW Railroad. The section was abandoned in 1954 and Clarence moved to 903 2nd St. in Paonia where he resided until his death.
Katherine preceded Clarence in death on Feb. 3, 1991, in Paonia.
He was a member of the Paonia Christian Church and a 50-year and lifetime member of the railroad's Brotherhood of Maintenance of Ways.
Clarence enjoyed he and his wife always gardening together. The main focus, love, and joy of his life was his family, the outdoors, flower gardening, yard work, hunting, fishing, and arrowhead hunting. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to the fullest by sharing his joy and the knowlege of his life history, along with his hobbies such as fishing, hunting, gardening, and the great outdoors.
Clarence lived for his family!
Survivors include two daughters: Margaret Everhart and Sharon and husband Dale Gillenwater; and one daughter-in-law, Aloise Hutchinson, all of Paonia.
Clarence was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, the great-grandfather of 16 great-grandchildren, and the great-great-grandfather of three great-great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Mable Taylor, of Grand Junction.
In addition to his parents and wife, Clarence was also preceded in death by one son, Merle Hutchinson; and one sister, Edith Beeson.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, March 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Paonia Taylor Funeral Service. This is the only visitation time. There will be no viewing at the church.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Clarence's life will be officiated by James Gall on Thursday, March 18, at 10 a.m. from the Paonia Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Iva W. Kendall
Meeker Museum Curator
March 22, 1912 - March 14, 1999
MONTROSE - Iva W. Kendall, age 86, a resident of Montrose since 1992, died Sunday evening, March 14, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital eight days before she would have celebrated her 87th birthday.
Iva W. Doolin and her twin were born in Iowa City, Iowa, on March 22, 1912, the children of Kiernan and Della M. (Wasson) Doolin. Iva's twin died at 9 months old. Iva spent her childhood on the family homestead in the Great Divide area, along with her seven siblings.
She was married on May 23, 1931, in Baggs, Wyo., to Levi David Kendall, who preceded her in death in October of 1975 in Meeker.
Iva lived in Meeker for 33 years where she worked as the Meeker Museum Curator for approximately 21 years. In 1992 she moved from Meeker to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses of Montrose and while living in Meeker she was a member of the Meeker Historical Society.
Iva's family was very special to her along with her religious beliefs. She especially enjoyed history and loved dogs.
Survivors include one son, Robert Kendall and wife Mary, of Bradenton, Fla.; and one daughter, Lola and husband Curt Robinson, of Montrose.
Iva was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Daniel Hopson, of Montrose; David Kendall, of Victorville, Calif.; Penny Hopson, of Lakewood; Julia and Joan Kendall, of Craig; Jody Koran, of Craig; Jean Sunberg, of Hayden; and seven stepgrandchildren: Alex and Frank Escobar and Vickie Calahan, all of Bradenton, Fla.; Carla Gartner, of Golden; and Connie Robinson, Cindy Thaute and Gary Robinson, all of Montrose.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Pauline Barnette, of Grand Junction; and Lucille Potter, of Spirit Lake, Idaho.
In addition to her twin, her parents and husband, Iva was also preceded in death by one son, Wayne Kendall, who died in 1976.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, March 17, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose and on Thursday, March 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Meeker Mortuary in Meeker.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Iva's life will be officiated on Friday, March 19, at 11 a.m. from the Meeker Mortuary Chapel in Meeker.
Interment will follow the service in the Highland Cemetery
at Meeker, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose and the Meeker Mortuary of Meeker.

E. Dean Reed
Retired Farmer
Feb. 18, 1909 - March 17, 1999
GRAND JUNCTION - Retired farmer, E. Dean Reed, age 90, a resident of Grand Junction since December of 1997, formerly of Hotchkiss, died on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at his home in Grand Junction.
Born in Red Cloud, Neb., on Feb. 18, 1909, E. Dean Reed was the son of Clerance and Cora (Smith) Reed. When he was a year old, Dean moved with his family to Akron, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood.
Dean married Beulah Rapp on May 7, 1938, in Denver, Colo. This union was blessed with seven children. The Reeds were privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary last year in May.
Dean and Beulah made their home in Hotchkiss for 46 years. After losing their Hotchkiss home in a fire, they moved to Grand Junction in December of 1997, where Dean made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Church of God of Hotchkiss.
Special interests that brought enjoyment into Dean's life were coin collecting, stamp collecting, horses, collecting in general, and he liked to go to auctions.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Reed, of Grand Junction; three sons: Clerance Reed and wife Anita, of Craig; Keith Reed and wife Debbie, of Dalton, Mass.; Glen Reed and wife JoAnn, of Lund, Nev.; and four daughters: Doris and husband Lee Miller, of Crawford; Mary and husband Ben McFarlin, of Grand Junction; Lola and husband Leroy Wold, of Spokane, Wash.; and Glenda Bass, of Hotchkiss.
Dean was the proud grandfather of 22 grandchildren, great-grandfather of 36 great-grandchildren; and the great-great-grandfather of one great-great-grandchild.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Benard Reed and wife Mary; Fred Reed and wife Lois, all of Sun City, Ariz.; and one sister, Bell and husband Emmett Stratton, of Choctaw, Okla.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Clerance and Cora Reed.
Visitation for family and friends was scheduled for Saturday, March 20, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Dean's life were officiated by The Rev. Karl Martin on Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. from the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss.
Interment followed the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Norma Jean Richmond Bennett

MONTROSE - Norma Jean Richmond Bennett, age 51, a resident of Montrose for 22 years, died Thursday afternoon, March 18, 1999, in her Montrose home following ravages of lung cancer which metastasized to her brain.
Norma Jean Richmond, the daughter of Norman and Jean (Wood) Richmond, was born on March 31, 1947, in Jacksonville, Fla. Norma Jean lived her early years in several states, including the countries of Germany and Italy. Her father was a 33-year career Naval officer.
Norma was self-employed with an accounting computer business in her home.
Norma's family and friends were the main focus, love, and joy of her life.
She is survived by two daughters: Nicole and Marisa, of the family home in Montrose; and a 5-month-old grandson, Bobby Birawer.
Other family survivors include her parents, Norman and Jean Richmond; and a brother, Clyde, all of Tucson, Ariz.
A Celebration of Life Remembrance Service for Norma will be conducted on her birthday, Wednesday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 515 So. Hillcrest Rd., in Montrose.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

The parents of Norma wish to express their profound appreciation to Hospice for their responsive invaluable service and care of Norma. Felix "Babe" Maldonado Jr.
Enjoyed Life To Its Fullest!
Sept. 2, 1936 - March 13, 1999
GRAND JUNCTION - Felix "Babe" Maldonado Jr. was born on Sept. 2, 1936, in Farmington, Utah, the son of Felix and Seberina (Puente) Maldonado Sr. He died on Saturday, March 13, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction at the age of 62.
Babe married RoseAnna "Chana" Pacheco on April 9, 1960, in Montrose, Colo., and worked as a used car salesman.
Babe enjoyed life to its fullest! He enjoyed his music, friends, taking and posing for pictures, sharing jokes and laughter. He loved collecting many things like jewelry, Buddhas, coins, etc. His love and joy in life was his familia, pets, and partying!
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, RoseAnna "Chana" Pacheco Maldonado; four daughters: Kelly and Steve Montoya; Marquita and Manuel Galindo, all of Grand Junction; Joslyn Maldonado and Henry Martinez, of Clifton; Shay Maldonado and Matthew Martinez; three sons: Felix Maldonado III and wife Lisa; Jimmy Lee Holt, Jade Maldonado, all of Grand Junction; as well as numerous extended familia.
Babe's grandchildren include Koreena and Carlos Montoya; Monique and Manuel Maldonado; Silvia and Sharde Galindo; Marcus Fernandez; Shanice and Felix Maldonado IV; Rico and Selena Martinez; and one on the way.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Frank Maldonado and wife Julia; Marvin Maldonado and wife Sally; two sisters: Marcia and husband Frank Cordova; Virginia and husband John Trujillo, all of Grand Junction; two sisters-in-law: Cordelia Arvayo and Virginia Maldonado; aunt and uncle, Michelle "Mickey" Puente Garcia and Tony Garcia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Babe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joe Cruz Maldonado and Albert Maldonado; and one granddaughter: Shania RoseAnna Martinez - Maldonado.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction and will continue until the Rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the chapel.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Babe's life will be officiated on Friday, March 19, at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Junction.

Floyd Edwin Jones
World War II Veteran
June 12, 1918 - March 17, 1999
PAONIA - World War II veteran and retired coal miner, Floyd Edwin Jones, age 80, a resident of Paonia since 1966, died on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in the Paonia Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Floyd Edwin Jones was born in Cory, Colo., on June 12, 1918, the son of Dean Leslie and Fern Bertha (Garner) Jones. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Paonia.
Floyd served his country in a tank corps with the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
He married Lola Ilene Wood, with the marriage ending in divorce.
Prior to his retirement, Floyd was employed as a coal miner.
He lived one year in Ogden, Utah and then moved to Wichita, Kan. where he resided for 13 to 14 years before moving back to Paonia in 1966, where he remainded until the time of his death.
Floyd was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, a member and Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge No. 1807, as well as a member of the Paonia Wilson-Head American Legion Post No. 97.
Floyd found enjoyment in fishing, camping, sight-seeing, and dancing.
Survivors include two sons: Jerry Jones and wife Karen, of Parachute; Stanley Jones and wife Mary, of Rockford, Ill.; one daughter, Donna Walker, of Parachute; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Orville Jones, of Parachute; and two sisters: Bertha and husband Dr. Norman Baughman, of Loma Linda, Calif.; and Norma Jones, of Denver.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mike; one brother, Kenneth; and a grandson, Allen.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, from 9:30 a.m. until service time (11 a.m.) at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Floyd's life will be officiated by Mike Kissner on Tuesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. from the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery

William Henry "Bill" Howard

MONTROSE - William Henry "Bill" Howard, age 83, a resident of Montrose since 1955, died Thursday afternoon, March 18, 1999, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
William Henry Howard was born on Sept. 26, 1915, in War Eagle (Benton County), Ark., the son of John Franklin and Minnie Viola (Wood) Howard. He was 6 months old when his parents moved to Leedey, Okla. and farmed in the Canadian Community northwest of Leedey. They lived there three years before going went back to Arkansas where they stayed three years, and then moved to Granby, Mo. They moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1923 and lived there four years, moving back to Oklahoma in 1928 and established their home on a farm 14 miles northwest of Leedey, Okla.
Bill went to school in the grades in Arkansas; Missouri; Wichita, Kan.; and the Canadian Community, graduating from the eighth grade in 1931 at Canadian. He started high school at Liberty Center, walking two miles twice a day to the school bus, which was a 1928 Model-A driven by Jim McKay, and rode eight miles to school. Bill graduated from high school in 1935.
While attending school at Liberty Center, Bill met Norma Nadine Clem and they were married on July 15, 1937 at the Arapho Courthouse in the judge's chambers by Judge Donald Darrah. Bill and Norma lived on his parents' place northwest of Leedey, Okla., 14 miles, in a half dugout for three months and then moved to another place about two miles north on the South Canadian River, also owned by Bill's father.
The later part of 1938, Bill and Norma bought 280 acres, three miles southwest of Leedey, and moved on it. Approximately 120 acres was farmland and the remaining 160 acres was grass. They raised cotton, wheat, oats and corn maize, as well as quite a few cows. Bill did custom wheat combining to help. They milked lots of cows and sold cream, chickens and hogs were a part of this farm. Each fall Bill and a neighbor, Roy Blacketter, would get together and butcher enough hogs for winter meat. Bill was great at sugar curing meat and it would keep all winter. At this time there were no deep freezes, electricity etc.
In 1950 electricity was brought to the farm and the Howards bought a 2-year-old refrigerator and a new deep freeze. The refrigerator was still working in July of 1987.
After being in three tornadoes, one of which demolished everything on May 31, 1947, Bill and Norma left Oklahoma in 1955 and moved to Montrose, Colo. A number of droughts were also a factor in their leaving. They sold their cattle but kept their place in Oklahoma for two years, and then sold it also.
Bill applied and got a job immediately with the Uncompahgare Valley Water Users Association in Montrose, starting on April 5, 1955, and worked for the Water Users for the next 25 years until his retirement.
Bill and Norma moved three times around Montrose until buying the place on North Mesa in April of 1956 with 20 acres of grass. In 1979 Bill was forced to retire on account of heart surgery, but Norma raised sheep to supplement their income.
Bill and Norma belonged to two square dance clubs: The Delta Hub Wheelers and The Black Canyon Twirlers.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Norma Howard; two sons: William Harold Howard and wife Shirley; Leland Eugene Howard and wife Lola Mae; one daughter, Shauna Kay and husband Dean Hovey, all of Montrose; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Erma Drusilla Hogg.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Bill's life will be officiated on Monday, March 22, at 2 p.m. from the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
