Marie Margarauite Lynch
DELTA - Lifetime Delta resident Marie Margarauite Lynch, age 63, a homemaker, died on Wednesday, March 10, 1999, after a sudden illness in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Marie Margarauite Anglin was born in Hotchkiss, Colo., on April 29, 1935, the daughter of Edgar Elmer and Violet (Hixon) Anglin.
Marie married John E. Lynch on June 18, 1953, in Grand Junction, Colo. John preceded his wife in death on March 4, 1991, in Delta.
Marie loved making time for others as well as sewing and cooking.
She is survived by four sons: Rodney Lee Lynch, Stanley Ray Lynch, Robert Wayne Lynch, all of Delta; and Steven Dale Lynch, of Montrose.
Marie was the proud grandmother of two grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Mildred Lortie, of Delta.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was also preceded in death by a stillborn infant, four brothers, and three sisters.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Marie's life will be officiated by Pastor Lee Ponder on Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m. from the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
Myrtle I. Knox
MONTROSE - Myrtle I. Knox, age 88, a resident of Montrose since 1995, died Thursday evening, March 11, 1999, in her home at Montrose.
A Memorial Service is pending.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
Myrtle I. Johnson was born in Idaho Springs, Colo., on April 9, 1910, the daughter of Mr. Johnson and Jenny (Orin) Johnson. She spent her childhood in Fort Morgan and Lazear, Colo., and graduated from the Delta High School.
Myrtle, a rancher and homemaker, lived in Parachute, Colo., for approximately 50 years before moving to Montrose in 1995 where she made her home until the time of her death.
The main focus, love, and joy of Myrtle's life was ranching.
Survivors grateful to have shared Myrtle's life include three sons: Mark O. Knox; Larry D. Knox and wife Danna, all of Montrose; Roger L. Knox and wife Sandy, of Parachute; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Edith Harrison, of Washington.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters.
Marvin William Flaming
OLATHE - Marvin William Flaming, age 87, a retired groceryman and a resident of Olathe for one year, died on Friday, March 12, 1999, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.
No services are planned. Arrangements were handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Marvin William Flaming, the son of John George Flaming and Emma Katherine (Borchers) Flaming, was born on April 5, 1911, in Bessie, Okla., where he spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood.
Marvin married Winnie Mae Hudson on Aug. 17, 1961, in Stillwater, Okla. The Famings were privileged to share 37 years of marriage last year in August.
He lived in Bessie and Stillwater, Okla., then moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1966 where he remained until one year ago when he and his wife moved to Olathe. Marvin lived in Olathe until the time of his death.
He had greatly enjoyed his work as a groceryman during his lifetime.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Winnie Mae Flaming, of Olathe; two sons: Kenneth M. Flaming, of Tucson, Ariz.; and Mark E. Flaming, of Louisville, Ky.
Other family survivors include one brother, Kenneth G. Flaming, of Stillwater, Okla.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herbert Otto Flaming; and one sister, Pearl Eichman.
Harlan "Bruce" Ackerson
HOTCHKISS - Harlan "Bruce" Ackerson, age 74, a resident of Hotchkiss for 15 years, died on Saturday, March 13, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert. Bruce was a retired assembly line worker for General Motors.
Born on June 29, 1925, in Colville, Iowa, Harlan "Bruce" Ackerson was the son of John Ackerson. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Colville, Iowa.
On April 5, 1986, Bruce married Venetta Louise Stewart in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple would have celebrated 13 years of marriage next month.
Fifteen years ago Bruce moved from New Hampshire to Hotchkiss where he made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Catholic faith; Black Canyon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9333; the Hotchkiss Senior Citizens; Elks Lodge No. 1807, B.P.O.E.; and Wilson-Head American Legion Post No. 97.
Marvin enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and leather work.
Survivors include his wife, Venetta Ackerson, of Hotchkiss; six stepsons: Mike Sickles and wife Pat, of Wichita, Kan.; Chuck Sickles and wife Lea; Mason Sickles and wife Jeanette, all of Hotchkiss; Chris Sickles and wife Rose Marie, of Cory; Danny Sickles, of Austin; Victor Sickles, of Crawford; and nine grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Willis Ackerson, of Tucson, Ariz.; and two sisters: Thelma Harvey, of Delta; and Veda Petterson, of Iowa.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, March 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service in Hotchkiss.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Bruce's life will be officiated by The Rev. Mike Smith on Tuesday, March 16, at 1 p.m. from the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Graveside Services will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, conducted by Wilson-Head American Legion Post No. 97 and Black Canyon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9333.

Clarence William Pittman
MONTROSE - Clarence William Pittman, age 82, a retired rancher and cattleman, and a resident of Montrose since 1963, died Wednesday morning, March 3, 1999, at his ranch near Montrose.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Clarence's life were officiated by The Rev. Tim Wade, of the Rosemont Baptist Church of Montrose, on Friday, March 5, at 10 a.m. in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Clarence William Pittman was born on Dec. 7, 1916, in North Star, Mich., the son of Frank Pittman and Anna (Zoss) Pittman. He spent his childhood in Michigan until he quit school at the age of 16. He sold his books and hopped on a west-bound train to fulfill the dream he had to become a buckaroo and cowboy in the West.
He ended up in northern Montana and Idaho where he found work on ranches, eventually becoming a trail boss. Along the way to Colorado he worked as a forest ranger as well as at every ranch and stock growers position imaginable. Clarence raised hogs, worked in a trailer manufacturing plant and a banana processing plant.
He married Edna Osmus on Nov. 23, 1958, in Caldwell, Idaho. The couple celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last year in November.
In March of 1963, Clarence moved his family to a ranch on Little Spring Creek Mesa near Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.
Clarence was a member of the Rosemont Baptist Church of Montrose and the Uncompahgre Cattleman's Association.
He enjoyed trailing cattle and sitting around the campfire visiting about his work and the West. He was, in the truest sense, an old-fashioned cowboy, with the work ethic and manner associated with a style that is rapidly vanishing from the mountain West.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Pittman; four sons: Ronald Brown, Derald Brown, Michael Pittman, Clarence W. Pittman Jr., all of Montrose; and six daughters: Gloria Munger, of Oregon; Virginia Adams, of Arizona; Kathy Appelhanz, of Montrose; Carrie Bridges and Geraldine DeWeese, both of Oklahoma; and Cynthia Sheehan, of Denver.
He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of six great-grandchildren.
Clarence was preceded in death by two grandsons, one great-grandson, his parents, and one brother.
Thelma Lucille Syrie
Mother of Seven Children
Feb. 16, 1920 - March 14, 1999
DELTA - Thelma Lucille Syrie, age 79, a homemaker and mother of seven children, died on Sunday, March 14, 1999, in her Delta home.
Thelma Lucille McCormick, the daughter Warren and Lucy (Thornburg) McCormick, was born on Feb. 16, 1920, in Moreland, Okla., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood. Thelma made her home in Mooreland, Okla., for 40 years before moving to Delta where she resided until the time of her death.
On April 5, 1937, she married Chester L. Syrie in Woodward, Okla. Chester preceded Thelma in death on May 7, 1991, in Grand Junction.
Thelma loved animals and especially enjoyed gardening and sewing.
Survivors include three sons: Jerl Dean Syrie, of Prescott, Ariz.; Chester Leo Syrie, of Grand Junction; Thomas Elvin Syrie, of Delta; and four daughters: Merita Sue Nelson, of Corona, Calif.; Linda Jane Rae, of Pleasanton, Neb.; Gracie Esser, of Delta; and Ann Grangroth, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Thelma was the proud grandmother of 18 grandchildren and the great-grandmother of 14 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include five brothers: Warren McCormick, Charles McCormick, Corky McCormick, Hubert McCormick, Bud McCormick; and two sisters: Marcella Barnes and Alice Case.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Thelma's life will be officiated by Minister Scott Lyles on Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. from the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.
Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery
at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
William L. Sherley
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - William L. Sherley, age 72, of Gainesville, Fla., died on Monday, March 15, 1999, in the North Florida Regional Medical Center at Gainesville.
William was born in Fort Pierce, Fla. He moved from Miami, Fla., to Gainesville in 1973 where he resided until the time of his death.
During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army.
Prior to his retirement, William was employed as a heavy equipment operator in construction.
Survivors include two sons: William W. Sherley, of Gainesville, Fla.; James L. Sherley, of Montrose; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor William's life will be officiated by Otis G. Evans on Wednesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in the High Springs Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Evans-Carter Funeral Home, of High Springs, Fla.
L. M. "Buck" Johnson
World War II Veteran
May 12, 1920 - March 14, 1999
ROOSEVELT, Utah - Former Montrose resident Lewellyn Marx "Buck" Johnson, age 78, of Roosevelt, Utah, died on Sunday, March 14, 1999, in a Roosevelt Care Center.
Lewellyn Marx Johnson, the son of Joseph Bariah and Alice (Allen) Johnson, was born on May 12, 1920, in Huntington, Utah, where he was raised and participated in high school athletics: as a guard in football, a guard in basketball, and as a catcher in baseball.
Buck married Jennie Evadean Timothy on Feb. 28, 1940, in Huntington, Utah, with the marriage later ending in divorce.
During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army.
At the age of 21, Buck moved to Oregon and began his career in the lumber industry with his extended family where he worked for some 38 years as a millwright, planerman, and superintendent. He also worked as a coal miner and a truck driver.
He lived in a variety of locales, including Utah, Oregon, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming. For the last two decades he had been a resident of Utah along with his family.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Buck described himself as "a jack of all trades" and his family remembers and appreciates the strong work ethic he embodied and which he instilled in them.
He enjoyed horses and loved the ocean and seafood.
Survivors include eight children: Patty Mardean Ward, of Logan, Utah; Lewis Marx Johnson, of Mesa, Ariz.; Timothy B. Johnson, of Caldwell, Idaho; Gwen Wissel, of Glendale, Ariz.; Josef Johnson, of Centerville, Utah; Charles Ray Johnson, of Pocatello, Idaho; Deborah Alderman, of Grand Junction; and Nadine Partridge, of Vernal, Utah.
Buck was the proud grandfather of 36 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of 28 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three sisters: Lavarda DeFriez Jones, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Madge Guyman, of Huntington, Utah; and Enid Miglorie, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
In addition to his parents, Buck was also preceded in death by one daughter, Sterline Johnson; one grandson, Avery Wissel; three brothers: Eldred Johnson, Armond Johnson, McClellan Johnson; and two sisters: Myrl Grange and Eliza Johnson.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Buck's life were held on Wednesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. from the Huntington LDS 1st and 5th Ward Chapel where friends called from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment followed the service in the Huntington Cemetery, with arrangements handled under the direction of the Hullinger-Olpin Mortuary, 457 East 300 North, Roosevelt, Utah; phone 800-716-2426.
Shirley A. Broughton
Montrose Resident Since 1987
March 5, 1926 - March 13, 1999
MONTROSE - Shirley A. Broughton, age 73, died Saturday afternoon, March 13, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital just eight days after celebrating her birthday.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Shirley's life will be officiated on Wednesday, March 17, at 3 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, 1840 E. Niagara Rd., in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Shirley A. Roberts, the daughter of Leo and Violet (Webb) Roberts, was born on March 5, 1926, in Lubbock, Texas.
In 1987, Shirley moved from Winona, Texas, to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Montrose, the P.E.O., and did volunteer work at the Montrose First Presbyterian Church.
Shirley enjoyed visiting the elderly shut-ins from the church and once a month she would visit the Colorow Care Center residents in Olathe. She was also active in the senior members of the church "Top of the Hill" group. Shirley's friendliness in the church will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her partner, Win Sordelett, of Montrose; and one son, Jim Broughton, of France.
Other family survivors include one niece, Jo and husband David DeVinny, of Montrose; and two nephews: Duane Roberts and wife Bonnie, of Denton, Texas; and Bill Roberts, of Annapolis, Md.
Edgar T. Burbridge
Retired Rancher and Miner
Aug. 2, 1919 - March 11, 1999
MONTROSE - Retired rancher and miner, Edgar T. Burbridge, age 79, a resident of Montrose for 27 years, died Thursday evening, March 11, 1999, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Edgar T. Burbridge was born in Delta, Colo., on Aug. 2, 1919, the son of Charles W. and Ida May (Wilson) Burbridge. He spent his childhood in Delta until he was 6 years old and then moved with his family to Nucla where he received his education and grew to adulthood.
During World War II, Edgar served his country as a machinist's mate in the United States Navy aboard the USS Pyro. He received several commendations.
In 1958, he married his wife Hazel. In 1972, the couple moved to Montrose where Edgar made his home until the time of his death.
He loved to hunt, fish and travel, but the main focus and delight of his life was his family.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Burbridge, of Montrose; three brothers: Ward E. Burbridge, of Nucla; Loyd L. Burbridge, of Grand Junction; Hubert "Tuffy" Burbridge, of Fruita; one sister, Ida May Barnes, of Sunsight, Ariz.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
