John Franklin deKoevend
World War II Vet/Teacher

NUCLA - John Franklin "Jack" deKoevend, age 75, mayor of the Town of Nucla for 16 years along with being a World War II veteran and Nucla school teacher, died of a heart attack on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
John Franklin deKoevend was born in Littleton, Colo., on May 23, 1923, the son of Frederick M. and Mabel E. (George) deKoevend. He graduated from the Littleton High School in May of 1942 and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he served his country in Norfolk, Va.; and Seattle, Wash., during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, Mr. deKoevend enrolled at Western State College in Gunnison.
Mr. deKoevend married Mary Helen Ayer on June 18, 1949, in Ouray, Colo., at the home of Al and Joan Fidel. The couple were blessed with three children: John Bruce, Karla Jon, and Mary A. "Agnes."
During the summers from 1949 to 1952, Mr. deKoevend co-managed the Ouray Swimming Pool, and coached swimming teams which competed regionally and at the state level.
Following his graduation from Western State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts in 1952, he was employed by the college in the maintenance department until the summer of 1953 at which time he went to work for the Idarado Mining Company at Ouray.
In May of 1954, Mr. deKoevend began working for the Union Carbide Company in Uravan as a life guard and swimming coach, as well as conducting Red Cross swimming classes. He continued to be involved in the swimming programs throughout each summer until the termination of his employment with Union Carbide in 1963. At that time he went back to Western State College to earn credits for a teaching certificate.
In the fall of 1965, Mr. deKoevend began teaching at the Naturita Junior High where he taught for several years before transferring to the position of fifth grade teacher at Nucla Elementary. He also drove school buses for several years.
After the deKoevend family moved to Nucla in 1967, Mr. deKoevend was elected mayor of Nucla on a write-in ballot in 1970 and continued to serve the Town of Nucla as mayor until his retirement in 1986.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. deKoevend's life include his wife of 49 years, Mary Helen deKoevend, of Nucla; two daughters: Karla and husband Jim Tilford and Mary A. deKoevend, all of Grand Junction; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Other family survivors include three sisters: Charlotte E. Elliott, of Littleton; Loretto N. and husband Gus Grosland; George D. and husband John Kincaid, all of Gunnison; one brother, Dick deKoevend and wife Jacquie, of Conway, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Gay deKoevend, of Pine, Ariz.; as well as 10 nieces and nephews; 10 grandnieces and nephews; and two great-grandnephews.
Mr. deKoevend was preceded in death by one son, John Bruce; his father and mother; one sister, Genevieve; and two brothers: Frederick S. and W. Robert.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Nucla High School Gymnasium.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. deKoevend's life will follow visitation on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at noon in the Nucla High School, 225 W. 4th St., with Bob Brubacker officiating. The service will conclude at the high school.
Cremation will follow the service, with Memorial Services to be held later next spring in Crawford.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Hale & Gerken Funeral Home of Naturita.

Enjoyed Family and Church Activities

CEDAREDGE - Algia A. "Retta" Carson, age 79, a homemaker and resident of Cedaredge, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Algia V. Loucks was born on July 4, 1919, in Gunnison, Colo., the daughter of Vere Hall and Henryetta (Butler) Loucks. She graduated from the Eckert High School in Eckert, Colo.
Miss Loucks married Herbert N. Carson on Dec. 18, 1937, in Delta, Colo. The couple were blessed with one daughter and were privileged to celebrate 61 years of marriage just a few days before Mrs. Carson's death.
Following their marriage, the Carsons moved to Portland, Ore., in 1940 where they remained until 1971 when they moved to Kentucky. After living in Oklahoma for 22 years, the Carsons returned to Cedaredge in 1976 where Mrs. Carson made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of Cedaredge. She belonged to the Pink Ladies Auxiliary for Delta County Memorial Hospital, served as chairman of the Heart Association for Delta County and served as Colorado Heart Mother in 1986, traveling the state to raise money for the Heart Association.
Mrs. Carson loved and enjoyed her family and church activities. She also enjoyed dancing and making pies. She started the summer Pie Social in Cedaredge.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Carson's life include her husband, Herbert N. Carson, of Cedaredge; one daughter, Mardean Marie and husband Rick Smith, of Montrose; one granddaughter, Carla Marie and husband Danny Harper, of Duncanville, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Louise Olbert, of Ignacio.
Other family survivors include one brother, Leonard Alverin Loucks, of Yacolt, Wash.
Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Olga May Loucks and Viva Belle Hamilton; and one brother, Alvin Loucks.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Carson's life will be officiated by Bishop Don Pyle on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. from the Cedaredge Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The service will conclude at the church.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

J. Nadean Addington
Wife, Mother, Grandmother

HURRICANE, Utah - J. Nadean Addington, age 78, a homemaker and resident of Hurricane, Utah for seven years, died on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Born on Dec. 1, 1920, in Stonington, Baca County, Colo., J. Nadean Holder was the daughter of Frank and Enid (Gordon) Holder. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Elkhart, Kan.
Miss Holder married Alden A. Addington on Oct. 27, 1937, in Hugoton, Kan. The couple were blessed with a son and a daughter and were privileged to celebrate 61 years of marriage this year in October.
The Addingtons lived in Campo, Colo., from 1971 to 1974 when she and her husband moved to the Orchard City area in Delta County where they resided until 1991. The last seven years of her life Mrs. Addington made her home in Hurricane, Utah, until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkhart, Kan., and belonged to the Eastern Star for many years.
Mrs. Addington loved and enjoyed being around her family and loved animals. She taught ceramic classes and had a ceramic shop. She also enjoyed knitting.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Addington's life include her husband, Alden A. Addington, of Hurricane, Utah; and one daughter, Lynne Voncielle and husband Vic Clampitt, of Austin.
She was the proud grandmother of three grandsons: Kent Clampitt, of Grand Junction; Lance Clampitt and wife Cheri, of Morrison; Shane Clampitt and wife Cindy, of Henderson, Nev.; and the great-grandmother of seven great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include three brothers-in-law: Bob Blaine, of Delta; Richard Addington and wife Loreine, of Elkhart, Kan.; Bill Addington, of Fort Worth, Texas; and two sisters: Velda and husband Don Geiger, of Delta; and Vioda Hargrove, of Seibert.
Mrs. Addington was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steven Mark Addington; and two sisters: Lodene Holder and Fada Blaine.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Addington's life will be officiated by Pastor Pat Malone on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2:30 p.m. from the Delta United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Warren Lee Wallace
A Very Generous Man

QUARTZ HILL, Calif. - Vietnam War veteran, Warren Lee Wallace, the son of Leonard Keith and Mable Caroline (Miller) Wallace, was born on Feb. 14, 1946, in the old hospital on Duke Hill in Hotchkiss. He died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at the age of 52, in the Antelope Valley Hospital at Lancaster, Calif. He was a supervisor engineer for Southern California Gas Co. for 27 years in Quartz Hill, Calif.
Mr. Wallace spent his childhood up on the Ragged Mountains, above the North Fork area, and graduated from the Hotchkiss High School with the class of 1964.
He also lived at Sunny Side, Utah; Paonia, Somerset, Bell Creek, and on Bone Mesa.
During the Vietnam War, Mr. Wallace served his country as an E-5 Minesweeper Electrician in the United States Navy from December of 1965 until November of 1969. He served aboard the U.S.S. Albatross between Vietnam and Sasebo, Japan.
Mr. Wallace married Margaret "Margie" Dillon in Bull Head City, Ariz., on Aug. 8, 1996.
He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3000 of Quartz Hill, Calif.; and a 23-year member of Hotchkiss Elks Lodge No. 1807, B.P.O.E.
Known as a very generous man and an avid Denver Bronco fan, Mr. Wallace had many loves in his life that he greatly enjoyed that included: Vegetable gardening, flowers, horseback riding, moving cows, golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, and camping. He especially enjoyed spending time up Leroux Creek and on Oak Mesa.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Wallace's life include his wife, Margaret "Margie" Wallace, of Quartz Hill, Calif.; two daughters: Sarah Elizabeth Wallace and Hannah Rose Wallace, both of Quartz Hill, Calif.; and one stepdaughter, Shannen and husband Jon Gordon, of Charlotte, N.C.
Other family survivors include one brother, Norman Wallace and wife Kay, of Crawford; and one sister, Sherry Robley and husband Dave Cotten, of Hotchkiss.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Mable Wallace.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Wallace's life will be officiated by Dennis Richards on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. from the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Garden of Memories at Crawford, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Hotchkiss.

Larry G. Paxton
Husband, Father, Grandfather

DOLORES - Larry G. Paxton, age 61, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his Dolores home.
Larry G. Paxton, the son of Harry Landon Paxton Jr. and Marie Jane (Thompson) Paxton, was born on May 14, 1937, in Durango, Colo., where he lived for 16 years and attended high school.
On Dec. 5, 1953, Mr. Paxton married Gerri Dora Brown in Gallup, N.M. The couple were blessed with three daughters and were privileged to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary last year in December.
Mr. Paxton was a member of the Cortez Elks Lodge since 1972.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Paxton's life include his wife, Gerri Paxton, of Dolores; and three daughters: Debra and husband Rick Majors, of Salida; Connie and husband Greg Majors, of Montrose; and Becky and husband Len Dorr, of Woodland Park.
He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Randy Majors and wife Cayenne, of Lafayette; Danny and Kristen Majors, of Montrose; Kendra and Brandon Dorr, of Woodland Park; and two great-grandchildren: Megan and Makenna Majors, of Lafayette.
Other family survivors include a sister, Lois and husband Larry Long, of Aztec, N.M.; an uncle, Ed Thompson, of Durango, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Paxton's life were officiated by The Rev. Dan Rhodes on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. from the First Baptist Church in Cortez.
Interment followed the service in the Summit Ridge Cemetery, with arrangements handled under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home of Cortez.
Memorial gifts may be made in Larry Paxton's name with the Dolores State Bank to benefit Hospice of Montezuma.
Margaret Barlow Cox Patton
101-Year-Old Orchard Rancher

CEDAREDGE - Margaret Barlow Cox Patton, a resident of the Cedaredge area for the last nine and a half years, died on Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert at the age of 101.
Margaret Barlow Cox was born on April 15, 1897, the daughter of John W. and Sallie White (Carey) Cox, in Norfolk County, Va., where she spent her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education and graduated in 1920 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Natural Arts from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va.
Miss Cox taught for one year at the Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Va.
She was married on Sept. 1, 1921, in Denver, Colo., to Donald Patton, who preceded her in death in 1955.
Mrs. Patton, an orchard rancher, lived in Hotchkiss for 68 years before moving to the Cedaredge area where she remained the last nine and a half years of her life until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hotchkiss.
Mrs. Patton loved and enjoyed music and the arts, traveling, swimming, and spending time in Acapulco, Mexico.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Patton's life include two nephews: Dr. Nat Adamson and wife Ann, of Charlottesville, Va.; Edmond Adamson, of Newport News, Va.; one niece, Yvonne Patton Cottrell, of Martinez, Calif.; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and longtime friends; Marvin and June Taylor, of Cedaredge.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to pay respect, and to honor Mrs. Patton's life will be officiated by Pastor Bill Stoddardt on Friday, Jan. 8, at 10:30 a.m. from the Hotchkiss Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Charlotte Ruth Nickerson

MONTROSE - Longtime Ouray and Montrose school teacher, Charlotte Ruth Nickerson, age 74, a resident of Montrose for 62 years, died Thursday evening, Dec. 31, 1998, in Tina's Guest Home at Montrose.
Charlotte Ruth Harris was born in Taskee, Mo., on Jan. 22, 1924, the daughter of Charles Kirby and Ruth Doram (Cattron) Harris. She spent some of her childhood in Missouri and while still a child moved with her family to Montrose where she graduated as Valedictorian from the Montrose County High School in 1941. Miss Harris continued to pursue her education and received a Bachelor's degree from Western State College in Gunnison.
In July of 1953, Miss Harris was married in Montrose, Colo., to Albert Nickerson, who preceded her in death in 1977.
Mrs. Nickerson was employed as a school teacher for many years in Ouray and then in Montrose. She also worked for the Montrose Daily Press and the Olathe Criterian as guest editor.
She moved from Missouri to Montrose 62 years ago where she made her home until the time of her death.
Mrs. Nickerson attended the United Methodist Church of Montrose. She held state and national offices as well as being a past president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Colorado Education Association.
Mrs. Nickerson loved and enjoyed working and journalism. She also enjoyed helping her husband in his uranium mining business.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Nickerson's life include one son, Glen Nickerson and wife Gayle; and one grandson, A.J., all of Clifton.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Bill Harris and wife Mary Ellen, of Delta; Walter Harris and wife Shirley, of Ft. Morgan; one sister, Fern and husband Elmer Falk, of Norwood; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Albert, Mrs. Nickerson was also preceded in death by one brother, John Harris; and one sister, Neva.
Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Nickerson's life are being planned for a later date.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
