MONTROSE - Montrose resident, Patricia Ann Cordova Alires, age 45, died of a sudden illness on Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.
Patricia Ann Cordova, the daughter of Gilbert and Mary (Barrientos) Cordova, was born on May 9, 1953, in Montrose, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her education, grew to adulthood, and lived nearly all of her lifetime until the time of her death.
In 1968, she married Frank Morales in Montrose, Colo., with the marriage later ending in divorce.
In 1985, Ms. Alires moved to Durango where she became the manager of Arby's Restaurant. Later, in 1987, she moved to Grand Junction to manage the Grand Junction Arby's.
On Dec. 12, 1989, Ms. Alires' teenage daughter and son, Laurie and Darren Morales, were tragically killed in an automobile accident in Mesa County. Her daughter, Laurie, had previously competed and won the honor to serve Montrose as a Monte de Rosas Fiesta queen.
Following her daughter and son's death, Ms. Alires moved back to Montrose to be near her family where she continued to make her home until the time of her own death.
During her lifetime, she was a homemaker, and worked as a supervisor and manager for fast food restaurants.
Ms. Alires enjoyed "Oldies" music, cooking and baking especially near the holidays. The main love and joy of her life was spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors grateful to have shared Ms. Alires' life include one son, Gilbert Cordova, of Grand Junction; two daughters: Lonnie Alires and husband Darren Sandoval, of Montrose; and Mary Barela, of Grand Junction.
She was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren: Trinity, Emmanuel, and Brittany Sandoval, of Montrose; and Adrian Morales, of Delta.
Other family survivors include her mother, Mary Belarde and stepfather, who she made her home with from an early age, LeRoy Belarde, of Monrose; two brothers: Martin Cordova and wife Janet, of Colorado Springs; Joe Belarde and wife Candi, of Montrose; and one sister, Darlene and husband Darick Robinson, of Montrose.
Visitation time for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
A Vigil Service for the deceased will be recited on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. from the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass in remembrance and to honor Ms. Alires' life will be officiated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Friday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
J. Morris "Moe" Walters
Wonderful Husband, Father, Pa-Pa, Friend

MONTROSE - J. Morris "Moe" Walters, age 72, a boiler maker and welder who formed Moe-Jean & Son Boiler & Welding Shop in 1957 after moving from Ohio to Montrose, died on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
J. Morris "Moe" Walters was born in Gibsonburg, Ohio, on Feb. 3, 1926, the son of Henry and Carrie (Ickes) Walters. He spent his childhood in Fremont and Tiffin, Ohio, and received his education and grew to adulthood in Ohio.
Mr. Walters married Shirley Beers on June 14, 1952, in Fremont, Ohio. The couple were blessed with one son and were privileged to celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary this year in June.
In September of 1991, Mr. Walters and his wife, Shirley, moved from Montrose to Porter, Okla. They moved back to Montrose in June of 1994 and were so happy to be back with their family and friends.
Mr. Walters was a member of Victory Baptist Church of Montrose.
The main focus, love, and joy of Mr. Walters' life was his family, his work which he enjoyed so very much, and fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Walters' life include his wife, Shirley Walters; one son, Kevin Walters and wife Kathy; and three grandchildren: Michelle, Jeremy, and Angela Walters, all of Montrose.
Other family survivors include one brother, Richard Walters; and three sisters: Rhea Myers, Kathryn Weiker, and Shirley Munson, all of Fremont, Ohio.
Mr. Walters was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 30, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Walters' life will be officiated by Pastor Marty Riggan on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m. from the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Irene Pearl Shaw Underwood

MONTROSE - Irene Pearl Shaw Underwood, age 92, of Montrose, died Monday evening, Dec. 21, 1998, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Irene Pearl Shaw, the daughter of James Clarence and Elva Bethsheba (Wilson) Shaw, was born on Aug. 3, 1906, in Matfield Green, Kan., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Miss Shaw was married on Sept. 7, 1930, in Emporia, Kan., to Charles William "Shy" Underwood, who preceded her in death.
After the couple married, they made their home in Teterville, Kan., where Mr. Underwood was employed by the City Service Oil Company. They lived in several communities in Central Kansas during the 50-year period that Mr. Underwood was with City Service, spending most of the time in Madison, Kan.
After retirement in 1969, the family moved to Emporia, Kan.
Mrs. Underwood was a very active member of the Twin Rivers Christian Church of Emporia, Kan.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family and home. She greatly enjoyed playing Bridge and other card games with her friends and maintained an active interest in her family, attending the activities of her great-grandchildren and the youngest generation of her family. She especially enjoyed making afghans and crocheting for her family and many friends.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Underwood's life include one daughter, Shirley Jean and husband Fred Leroy Brown Jr., of Montrose; and one daughter-in-law, Flo Underwood, of Lake Ozark, Mo.
She was the proud grandmother of one granddaughter, Sharon Kay and husband Robert Pierce Lake, of Montrose; one grandson, Steven Norris Underwood and wife Debra Louise, of Eureka, Kan.; four great-grandchildren: Kari Lynn Smith and Cody Wayne Smith, both of Montrose; Stephanie Ann Underwood, of Pennsylvania; Jennifer Rebecca Underwood, of Eureka, Kan.; and one great-great-granddaughter, Rebecca, of Eureka, Kan.
In addition to her grandparents, parents, and husband, Mrs. Underwood was also preceded in death by two sons: Robert Wayne and Howard Norris Underwood; and two brothers: Floyd J. Shaw and Walter Maxwell "Max" Shaw.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Underwood's life will be officiated by The Rev. Tim Wade, of the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose, on Saturday, Dec. 26, at 10 a.m. from the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
Graveside Services will be officiated by The Rev. Jim Slack, of the Twin Rivers Christian Church of Emporia, Kan., on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. in the Matfield Green Cemetery
at Matfield Green, Kan., with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Barbara Mary Underhill
Mother of Four Children

DELTA Barbara Mary Underhill, age 74, a homemaker and resident of Delta County for most of her life, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Barbara Mary Schmaltz, the daughter of Adam Frank and Margaret (Mildenberger) Schmaltz, was born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Olathe, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her high school education, and grew to adulthood.
Miss Schmaltz married Raymond A. Underhill on Jan. 19, 1957, in Grand Junction, Colo. Mr. Underhill preceded his wife in death on July 7, 1984, in Delta.
Mrs. Underhill, a homemaker, was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), belonged to numerous square dance clubs, and the Women's Democratic Caucus.
She loved and great enjoyed her family, fishing, sewing, gardening, and flowers.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Underhill's life include one son, Daniel Raymond Underhill and wife Donna, of Colorado Springs; and three daughters: Betty Lou and husband Richard Woodall, of Eugene, Ore.; Judith M. and husband Ulysses Swiatek, of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and Laurie K. and husband George Chamberlin, of Springfield, Ore.
She was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Adam Schmaltz, of Grand Junction; Richard Schmaltz, of Delta; and seven sisters: Betty Downing, of Delta; Anna McElroy, of Grand Junction; Eleanor Timbrook, of Concord, Calif.; Bertha Thompson, of Bagdad, Ariz.; Beata Anders, of Delta; Kathryn Durbin, of Hoodsport,
Wash.; and Patricia Chick, of Rock Springs, Wyo.
In addition to her parents and husband, Raymond A. Underlhill, Mrs. Underhill was also preceded in death by three brothers: Edward, Andrew, and John Schmaltz; and two sisters: Margaret Barnes and Marie Wigner.
Rosary will be recited on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
Mass of the Resurrection in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Underhill's life will be officiated by The Rev. Charles Sena on Monday, Jan. 4, at 10 a.m. from St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Doris Evelyn Todd

HOTCHKISS - Doris Evelyn Todd, age 85, a homemaker, restaurant cook, and a resident of Hotchkiss since 1931, died on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in the Paonia Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Doris Evelyn Bice, the daughter of Elmer and Alma (Addams) Bice, was born on July 14, 1913, in Codell, Kan., where she spend her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood.
Miss Bice married Elmer W. Todd on June 3, 1931, in Hotchkiss, Colo. The couple were blessed with four children and were privileged to celebrate 67 years of marriage this year in June.
Following their marriage, the Todds moved to Hotchkiss where Mrs. Todd made her home for 67 years until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hotchkiss, the Hotchkiss Harmony Club, and the Cotton Wood Club.
The love and joy of Mrs. Todd's life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading, and gardening.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Todd's life include her husband, Elmer Todd, of Hotchkiss; three sons: Rev. Keith Todd and wife Kathy, of Pine River, Minn.; Roger Todd and wife Jean, of Avon Park, Fla.; Jere Todd and wife Linda, of Rock Spring, Texas; and one daughter, Kaye Todd, of Hotchkiss.
She was the proud grandmother of 34 grandchildren and great-grandmother of numerous great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Hollis Bice, of Rickreall, Ore.; Raymond Bice, of Otis, Ore.; and six sisters: Patty Brooks, of Otis, Ore.; Gladys Penland, of Hotchkiss; Bonnie Ratharmell, of Gleneden Beach, Ore.; Lola Ansiel, of Lincoln City, Ore.; Jean Dunn, of Rockaway, Ore.; and Peggy Moore, of Mill City, Ore.
Mrs. Todd was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Alma Bice; three brothers; and one son, Rodney Todd.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Todd's life will be officiated by her son, Rev. Keith Todd, on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Hotchkiss.
Private family interment will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss, with arrangments being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Mary Sue Swanson

RIDGWAY/ MONTROSE AREA - A native of Arkansas and a resident of Ridgway and Montrose for the past year and a half, Mary Sue Swanson, age 54, died late Monday evening, Dec. 28, 1998, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose after fighting a lengthy battle with brain cancer.
Mary Sue Carter, the daughter of George F. Carter Sr. and Helen (Bernier) Carter, was born on Oct. 17, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark., where she spent her childhood, graduated from the Little Rock High School with the class of 1963, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock for two years.
Miss Carter married David Swanson on Oct. 15, 1970, in Little Rock, Ark. The Swansons were privileged to celebrate 28 years of marriage in October this year.
Mrs. Swanson was involved in Pro-Rodeo and later enjoyed a career as owner and trainer of thoroughbred horses.
She was a member of the Ridgway Community Church of Ridgway.
Mrs. Swanson traveled overseas and lived in the Middle East and Singapore, and also visited India and Nepal.
She loved her family, people and always animals. She had a deep love for her family especially her nieces and nephews.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Swanson's life include her husband, David Swanson, of Montrose; her mother, Helen B. Carter, of Cabot, Ark.; a twin brother, George "Bubba" Carter Jr., of Telluride; two sisters: Connie Hanson, of Ridgway; Caroline Carter, of Cabot, Ark.; four nieces; two nephews; and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her father, George F. Carter Sr.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Swanson's life will be officiated by Pastor Joe Kirby on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 2:30 p.m. in the Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Ouray.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

W.W. "Bill" Stevens

DELTA Retired farmer and rancher, W.W. "Bill" Stevens, age 99, a resident of Delta since 1958, died on Sunday. Dec. 27, 1998, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
W.W. Stevens was born on April 5, 1899, in Sheridan, Kan., the son of Will and Mattie Sue (Talkington) Stevens. He attended schools in Hoxie, Kan.
Mr. Stevens was married on Feb. 21, 1920, in Hoxie, Kan., to Affie Faye Cressler, who preceded him in death in Delta.
The couple moved from Kansas in 1926 and established their home in Craig where they resided until 1955. They then moved to Montrose where they lived until 1958 when they moved to Delta, where Mr. Stevens made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Delta.
Mr. Stevens' special interests in life revolved around his career as a farmer and rancher.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Stevens' life include his daughter, Eileen Reece, of Delta; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Affie, Mr. Stevens was also preceded in death by one son, Lee Roy Stevens; one grandson; and one great-great-grandson.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Stevens' life will be officiated by Pastors Lloyd Austin and Mike Kissner on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at 2:30 p.m. from the Delta Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
