Lena Etta Kelley

GRAND JUNCTION - Longtime Paonia resident, Lena Etta Kelley, age 89, a homemaker of Grand Junction, died on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Lena Etta Wiening, the daughter of Charles F. and Clara (Rober) Wiening, was born on April 30, 1909, in Paonia, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Miss Wiening married Frank F. Kelley in Delta, Colo.
The Kelleys lived in Paonia until 1952 when they moved to Grand Junction where Mr. Kelley preceded his wife in death on June 13, 1981. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Kelley continued to make her home in Grand Junction until the time of her own death.
She was a member of the Paonia Lutheran Church and the Orchard Mesa Bowling Club.
The joy and delight of Mrs. Kelley's life was gardening, fishing, and flowers.
Mrs. Kelley, the last surviving member of her immediate family, is survived by nine nieces, 10 nephews, and six cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Frank, she was also preceded in death by one nephew; four sisters: Ellis, Emma, Minnie, Mary; and four brothers: Charlie, Walter, Bill, and Clifford.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Kelley's life will be officiated by Pastor J.C. Sparks on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 1:30 p.m. in the Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Paonia.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Frances Marie Allen
Retired School Teacher

CEDAREDGE - Retired school teacher, Frances Marie Allen, age 88, a resident of Cedaredge for 27 years, died on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in her Cedaredge home.
Frances Marie Leymaster, the daughter of Harry E. and Maggie (Foss) Leymaster, was born on Jan. 27, 1910, in Hamilton County, Neb. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Central Nebraska. She continued to pursue her education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Nebraska.
Miss Leymaster married James Scott Allen on Dec. 20, 1941, in Thedford, Neb. The Allens would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this month.
The Allens moved from Beltsville, Md., to Cedaredge 27 years ago where Mrs. Allen made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Episcopal church, a charter member of Chapter G.T. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a past state president of the Maryland P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Allen's special interests were in the P.E.O., bird watching, cooking, and eating.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Allen's life include her husband, James Scott Allen, of Cedaredge; and one brother, Donald E. Leymaster and wife Elna, of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Maggie Leymaster.
At Mrs. Allen's request, no funeral service will be held.

James Mitchell Trounce
Dedicated To His Work

MONTROSE - James Mitchell Trounce, a resident of Montrose for 37 years, died on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at his home near Montrose two days after celebrating his 71st birthday.
Born on Nov. 30, 1927, in Denver, Colo., James Mitchell Trounce was the son of Harry Lawrence and Lillian Mae (Gordon) Trounce. He spent his childhood in Michigan and Colorado, finishing his education in Boulder.
After completing his education, Mr. Trounce joined the United States Air Force where he served his country near the end of World War II.
On May 7, 1950, Mr. Trounce and Dona Nadine Lovejoy were married in Denver. The couple were privileged to celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary this year in May.
In 1961, Mr. Trounce moved his family to the Montrose area to be near his wife's family. He began working on the Blue Mesa project, then when the Morrow Point project came on line he became the carpenter foreman on the job. He continued working in the area of industrial construction on the Eisenhower Tunnel, water tunnel construction near Bakersfield, Calif., and as the dam superintendent on the Crystal project in Gunnison County.
Mr. Trounce later returned to California where he worked as the project supervisor on the construction of the Los Angeles Subway. He retired in 1990 and returned to Montrose where he made his home until the time of his death.
He greatly enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He especially enjoyed woodworking, reading western and science fiction books, but he was most interested in his work. No one person was ever more dedicated to his field of endeavor than Mr. Trounce.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Trounce's life include his wife, Nadine Trounce, of Montrose; three sons: Timothy Dale Trounce and wife Kristan, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Randy Lynn Trounce and wife Vickie, of Montrose; Wayne Mitchell Trounce and wife Diana, of Olathe; two daughters: Janet and husband Harvey Gray, of Olathe; Elizabeth Anne and husband William Lynch, of Kenai, Alaska; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Harry Trounce, Olathe; Richard Trounce, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three sisters: Anneva Masters and Virginia Stewart, both of Evergreen; and Shelby Ferguson, of Thornton.
Mr. Trounce was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Della Wilson.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Trounce's life will be officiated by Pastors Bob Cadenhead and Tim Parish on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. from the Olathe Baptist Church. The service will conclude at the church.
Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Helen D. Skeffington
Wife, Mother, Grandmother

HOTCHKISS - Helen D. Skeffington, age 69, a homemaker and resident of Hotchkiss for 10-1/2 years, died on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Helen D. Cram, the daughter of Harold and Clara (Hansen) Cram, was born on Nov. 6, 1929, in Clinton, Iowa, where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
She married James W. Skeffington on Aug. 12, 1945, in DeWitt, Iowa. The couple were blessed with two daughters and were privileged to share 53 years of marriage this year in August.
The Skeffingtons moved from Marble to Hotchkiss 10-1/2 years ago where Mrs. Skeffington made her home until the time of her death.
Hobbies she enjoyed throughout her lifetime were crocheting, sewing, and fishing. When she went fishing she would take her crocheting along and if the fish weren't biting she would do her crocheting.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Skeffington's life include her husband, James W. Skeffington, of Hotchkiss; two daughters: Linda and husband Tom Myers, of Grand Junction; Kathryn and husband Tom Hansen, of Rock Island, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Bob Cramm, of Kansas City, Kan.; Martin Cramm and wife Liz, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and one sister, Clara and husband Ed Obermiller, of Clinton, Iowa.
Mrs. Skeffington was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Gene Cramm; and one sister, Shelia Sweet.
No services are planned at this time.

Velta Eveline Pope
Wife, Mother, Grandmother

OLATHE - Velta Eveline Pope, age 68, died Thursday morning, Dec. 3, 1998, at her home in Olathe.
Velta Eveline Brewer was born in Vernon, Okla., on July 8, 1930, the daughter of Samuel and Mollie (Moore) Brewer. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Miss Brewer was married on Jan. 14, 1951, in Flagstaff, Ariz., to Gerald Albert Pope, who preceded her in death on June 23, 1973.
Mrs. Pope, a homemaker, and her husband moved from Cottonwood, Ariz., to Olathe in August of 1968 where she made her home until the time of her death.
Mrs. Pope loved to read, do word puzzles in the newspaper, and hook rugs.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Pope's life include two sons: Jerry Pope and wife Bonnie; John Pope; six daughters: Donna Pope; Cheryl Johnson and her husband; Geraldin and husband Kenny Benjamin; Linda Case and Rod Leonard; Judy Pope and Phillip Romero; Caroline Pope and Frank Terzo; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Elmer Brewer; and one sister, Ola Williams.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Pope was also preceded in death by one grandson, Jerry Allen Pope; and three sisters.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Pope's life will be officiated by Beth Patterson on Monday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. from the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Coryden "Ed" Perkins
Former Montrose Resident

SALEM, Ore. - Former Montrose resident, Coryden "Ed" Perkins, age 88, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Salem, Ore.
Coryden "Ed" Perkins was born on June 4, 1910, in Montrose, Colo., the son of Martin and Cora Perkins. As a young boy he was a shepherd for his father in Colorado.
He was an avid rock hound and also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and private inurnment of the cremains will be held in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral home of Montrose.
Julia J. McCaslin
A True Humanitarian
April 14, 1913 Dec. 5, 1998
FRUITA - Julia J. McCaslin, age 85, died following a lengthy illness on Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998. This wonderful lady will live forever in the hearts of those who knew her giving, tireless self. She was a true humanitarian. She was a resident of Cedaredge since 1944 and the last five years of her life she was a resident of the Oaks at Family Health West in Fruita.
Julia J. Shinn was born on April 14, 1913, at White Cloud, Mo., the daughter of Andrew B. and Bertha (Cox) Shinn. Her mother died shortly thereafter so she was reared by her maternal grandparents, Victoria and William Breshears. She grew up and attended schools near Wheatland, Mo.
Miss Shinn and Glen McCaslin were united in marriage on Oct. 22, 1933, in Osceola, Mo. They farmed in the Wheatland area until moving to Cedaredge in 1944. The McCaslins were privileged to share 53 years of marriage prior to Mr. McCaslin's death.
Mrs. McCaslin was a tireless individual with many vocations, interests, and hobbies throughout her lifetime. She operated restaurants at different times in Cedaredge, managed the local movie theater for over 15 years, and worked as a school cook and lunchroom supervisor for many years.
She was a member of the Cedaredge Church of the Nazarene who will best be remembered for her forever giving to family, church, friends and even acquaintances. She gladly welcomed all for fellowship with fresh home-made pies and cakes, bountiful dinners, and canned vegetables from her large garden.
Knitting and quilting were also among Mrs. McCaslin's hobbies. Family and friends will always cherish her hand-made gifts of love.
Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. McCaslin's life include two sons: Bob McCaslin and wife Barbara, of Pittsburg, Mo.; Jack McCaslin and wife Eva, of Grand Junction; three granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; as well as many friends too numerous to mention.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. McCaslin was also preceded in death by two older sisters.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. McCaslin's life will be officiated by The Rev. Bob Carpenter on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. from the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Memorial gifts may be made in memory of Julia J. McCaslin to a charity of the donor's choice.
