Carolyn Klements
November 11, 2005
Carolyn Frances Bennett Klements, 76, wife, mother, sister and grandmother died at Rangely District Hospital on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005. Carol was born and raised in Cottonport, La., and earned her teaching degree at Northwestern in Natchitoches, La., majoring in home economics. She moved to Silverton, Colo., in 1951 to teach school. There she met Norman Klements and they married in 1952. They made Rangely their home in 1959.
Carol was an active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the Rangely Garden Club. She continued as a substitute teacher while raising her family. She always enjoyed teaching Home Ec, but her real love was sewing. After retiring, Carol gave countless hours to volunteer work delivering Meals on Wheels and greeting people at the Dinosaur Welcome Center.
Her husband, Norman; sons, Kirby (Maryann) and Casey (Gara); and her daughters, Becky Klements-Nees and Kathy (Steve) Houska; 11 grandchildren, and sister, Harriet Harwood, survive Carol. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Denise and Harold Bennett; her brother, Harold, Jr. and daughter, Eloise.
A Memorial Mass was held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005. Interment was in the Rangely Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to either St. Ignatius Catholic Church or the Western Slope Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association through Rangely Mortuary, PO Box 351 in Rangely.
Roy D. Ryan

Roy D. Ryan, 82, died Nov. 7, 2005, at his home in Meeker.
Roy Dale Ryan was born and raised on the family ranch near Saguache in the San Luis Valley. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his discharge he returned to ranching, remaining in Saguache until he retired when he moved to Battlement Mesa and spending a great deal of his time with his sister, Ruth, in Meeker. He was an avid reader. Survivors include his sister, Ruth Medlin of Meeker and one nephew, Gary Husung of Denver. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lois Husung and one brother, Harvey Ryan.
A memorial service will be planned for the springtime at the Hillside Cemetery
in Saguache. Cochran Memorial Chapel of Meeker has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Virginia Adeline Lieber
January 23, 1922 - October 30, 2005
Longtime Northwest Colorado resident Virginia A. Lieber passed away in her home at Sunset Meadows, Craig, Colo. Virginia was born on Jan. 23, 1922, in Tulsa, Okla., to her parents William B. and Anna A. Hickerson. Her parents moved to Denver, Colo., from Tulsa, Okla. Denver became Virginia’s childhood home. She attended East High School followed by Parks Business School. Her early employment opportunities were clerical positions where she helped in the World War II war efforts working at the Remington Arms Company/Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, Colo.
On May 18, 1942, Virginia married her high school sweetheart, Farrell C. Lieber in Denver, Colo. The couple moved to Meeker in 1948 residing on Main Street and later moved into a home up the White River. Virginia became active in Eastern Star and participated as a Sunday school teacher at the Methodist Church.
In 1960, the couple purchased a business in Craig and moved from Meeker. Virginia resided on Pershing Street for years being active in the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Sorority, as Chapter and District President. She was a Doe as a member of the Elk’s Club.
In the late 1960s, a relocation back to the Front Range took place where the couple lived in Arvada, Colo., for several years then returned to Meeker. For seven years, the couple traveled as snowbirds making long lasting friendships. After the passing of her husband in 1994, Virginia stayed in Meeker until 2004, but due to failing health, she moved back to Craig to receive medical services.
Virginia enjoyed her friends, painting art works and spent many years helping in philanthropic community activities.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and husband. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Bristol of Escondido, Calif., Sue Ann Lieber-Young of Palm Springs, Calif., Dianne Lieber of Craig, Colo., and a son, Charles Lieber of Fallbrook, Calif. One brother, Warren Hickerson of Meeker, 16 grandchildren, Christine Bristol of Temecula, Calif., Carolyn Russell of San Diego, Calif., John Bristol of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Carla Copus of Winchester, Calif. Grace Bristol of San Diego, Calif., LeeAnn Bristol of San Diego, Calif., Megan Eberling of Santa Monica, Calif., Travis Lieber of Santa Clara, Calif., Fairlight Schmidt of Riverside, Calif., Jessica Arenas of Upland, Calif., Alison Gaudenti of Riverside, Calif., Hilary Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev., Tyrrell Kochenower of Craig, Colo., Trevor Kochenower of Hemet, Calif., Trenton Kochenower of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Troy Kochenower of Hayden, Colo. Virginia had 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery. Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
Charles R. Holmes
November 27, 1925 - October 21, 2005
Longtime Meeker educator Charles R. Holmes, 79, died Oct. 21, 2005, at the Walbridge Memorial Wing.
Mr. Holmes was born Nov. 27, 1925, to Phillip A. and Beryl (Warner) Holmes on the family ranch up Rifle Creek. He attended school in Rifle and left school to join the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the CBE 101-Mantanikau aircraft carrier.
Following his service days he returned to Rifle where he worked in the coal mines and the vanadium mines. He then enrolled in college.
He met his wife Emily Van Dusen on a blind date in 1951 and they married and Charles finished his degree. The family moved to Aguilar, Colo., where Charles taught business classes and wood working and served as assistant coach for four years.
In 1958, the family moved to Meeker where Charles taught for the next 26 years. Charles coached junior high basketball for many years and when complimented on the many years of success in this area, would always give credit to the players by saying it was “a good bunch of hard working kids that came through the junior high.”
Charles loved flowers and planted hundred of gladiolas every year that he shared with many friends in Meeker. He will long be remembered for his love of golf and his fellow-man and for being a good and honorable husband, father and friend.
He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Jane and Julie, his parents, two sisters and one brother.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Highland Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Walbridge Wing Memorial Fund through Cochran Memorial Chapels which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Paul A. Kenney
June 19, 1932 - October 12, 2005
In loving memory of Paul A. Kenney, 73, who passed away on Oct. 12, 2005, from a heart attack.
No services will be held at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Ustick Chapel in Meridian. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Paul lived his life for his family and close friends. He was the corner stone of our family and will be missed greatly.
He lived his life in the outdoors and enjoyed all the great horses and animals he raised. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his grandchildren at Mosquito Flats, Idaho.
He was born to Lester Arnold Kenney, and Glee Geneva Cloward Kenney, and Orson Cloward his grandfather who played a very important role in his life, now deceased.
Paul was born and raised in Rangely on June 19, 1932. He was the oldest living child of the Kenney clan.
He is survived by his loving devoted wife, Ruby Allene Shrum Kenney; sons, Collin Eric Kenney and wife Vicki and Sidney Dustin Kenney and wife Beddy; daughter, Kristi Lamar Kenney Petersen and husband Todd; grandchildren, Dawn Kenney Ayotte and husband Tim, Candy Kenney White and husband Steve, Krystal Jean Kenney, Kolton Lane Kenney, Kendy Lee Marthena Kenney, Heather Allene Maneotis, and Nicholas Paul Sensabaugh; and great grandson Levi Reed White. Paul has one brother, Kenneth Kenney, one sister Jillene Laree Kenney Graham, and two half sisters, and a whole slew of the Kenney clan that looked up to him and loved him.
We all pray that the horses of heaven are as much of a challenge as the wild horses of Colorado.
Natasha LeAun Gutierrez
May 22, 1987 - October 8, 2005
Natasha Gutierrez, 18, of Meeker died Oct. 8, 2005, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
Natasha LeAun Gutierrez was born May 22, 1987, at the Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., the oldest daughter of Jose “Joe” and Donna Michelle (Rose) Gutierrez. As a young girl the family moved to Meeker where she attended school, graduating with the Meeker High School Class of 2005. She was a licensed esthetician and manicurist before she was graduated high school. She was studying massage therapy and attending hair school in Glenwood Springs, while working with her mother in their White River Body Spa at the time of her death.
To know Natasha was to know a young lady filled with fun, smiles and laughter. She loved being around people, especially boys. She will be remembered by many for her loving and caring attitude. She loved to spend time with her dad hunting and fishing and when in high school, helped train Meeker wrestlers. As a peewee wrestler, she used proper technique and surprised many young men with her headlock. She enjoyed volunteering her time with the Meeker Giving Tree and loved the time she spent helping the Meeker Lions Club.
She worked hard on the Meeker High School annual each year and was a former member of the Meeker Makos Swim Team.
Natasha is survived by her parents, Joe and Donna and her sister Alexis, all of the family home, her paternal grandmother, Rose Gutierrez of Meeker, her maternal grandparents, Diana Gibson of Denver and Robert Rose of Eureka, Calif., as well as her uncles Roman (Vicki) Gutierrez of Craig, Bobby (Wendy) Gutierrez of Meeker; and aunts Priscilla (Stevan) Kilibarda of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; Margie (Richard) Carrillo of Pueblo; Jannette (Gary) Davies of Greeley; Cindy (Andre) Fox and Sandy (Oliver Wilson) Gibson both of Grand Rapids, Mich., as well as numerous cousins, friends and classmates. She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Roberto Gutierrez and her great-grandmother, Florence Barnes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fairfield Community Center with her former elementary school principal, Deacon Bill Ertmer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery. A visitation will be Thursday from 3-8 p.m. and Friday until noon at Cochran Memorial Chapel.
Memorial funds in her name have been established at both First National Bank of the Rockies and Mountain Valley Bank.
Ruth Paradine Console
September 29, 1920 - September 23, 2005
Ruth Paradine Console, 85, of Meeker passed away Sept.. 23. Ruth was born Sept. 29, 1920, to Walter and Inez Ely Whalin.
Ruth married Ivan Barber and to this union, three sons were born.
She married Bob Console in November of 1988.
Ruth is survived by sons Darrell Barber of Redding, Calif., and Monty Barber and Terrance Barber, both of Anaheim, Calif.; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Console of Demming, N.M. and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob and three brothers and three sisters.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital or the World Wildlife Fund in care of Cochran Memorial Chapel.
Services were held Oct. 1 at the Cochran Memorial Chapel with Tom Maybury officiating.
David Kenneth Lowe
Oct. 28, 1952 - Sept. 6, 2005
David Kenneth Lowe of Alto Loma, Calif., died at his home Sept. 6. David was born at Oceanside, Calif., at the Naval Hospital Oct. 28, 1952, where his father, Herbert Lowe was on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps stationed at Camp Pendleton.
David grew up in Rangely and was graduated from Rangely High School in 1970. He received his private pilot’s license at CNCC. He served in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret during the Vietnam War.
After serving his active duty, he returned to California to go back to school at San Diego where he met his wife, Judy Casbaugh. They were married June 26, 1977. They had two daughters, Brenda born in February 1982 and Brittany born April 1985. David and his family were members of the Upland Christian Church of Upland, Calif.
David is survived by his wife and two daughters of Alto Loma, Calif. His father and mother, Herbert and Margaret Lowe of Rangely; brother, Steven Lowe of Rangely and sister, LuAnne Lowe of Gilbert, Ariz. Services were entrusted to Draper Mortuary of Upland, Calif.

Mary Caroline Hilkey
June 27, 1913 - August 28, 2005
Mary Caroline Hilkey, 92, of Cedaredge died Aug. 28 at Willowtree of Delta.
She was born June 27, 1913, in North Waterford, Maine, to Charles and Carrie Kingsbury Hersey. She married Harold Anthony Hilkey on June 1, 1940.
She was a member of Delta Christian Church in Delta.
Mary was graduated from high school at Bridgeport Academy in Maine as salutatorian. She was in 4-H and active in the student fellowship. She was graduated from Rhode Island University with a degree in home economics. While in college, she participated in field hockey, won a state silver medal in ice speed skating, played basketball, baseball and ran track.
After graduation, she went west to be with her sister and was a clerk at the May D&F store in Denver. She later taught school in Penrose, Meeker and Rangely. She came to Cedaredge 29 years ago.
She was a member of Alpha Zeta Sorority, Cedaredge Garden Club and the Gleaners Club of the church.
She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and hosting meals.
She is survived by sons, Jack (Joyce) Hilkey of Littleton and Mike (Gloria) Hilkey of Bedford, Ind.; brothers, Alfred (Eleanor) Hersey of Maine, Alvin (Helen) Hersey of Maine and Bill (Jean) Hersey of Maine; sister-in-law, Eldrid Hilkey of Rangely; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Three grandsons-in-law, one granddaughter-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; one great-grandchild; sisters Louise and Mabel; and her brother, Roy Hersey.
Funeral services were held at Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta. Burial was at Meeker Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery.
Darrie Dean Bauer
August 15, 1965 - September 10, 2005
Darrie Dean Bauer, 40, the son of Delvin and Arlene Bauer of Billings, Mont., died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, in a single car accident in Colorado.
Darrie was born in Minot, N.D., on Aug. 15, 1965. He attended elementary school in Great Falls, Mont., and was graduated from Billings Senior High in 1983. In 1985, he became a father to his son Daniel. Darrie served in the armed forces. After he was discharged, he worked for Rich Myers. He presently was residing at the Mantle Ranch in Rifle, Colo.
Darrie was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He like to race cars in his spare time.
Darrie is survived by his son Daniel Bauer of Waterloo, Iowa, grandson Gage of Waterloo, Iowa, grandmother Amanda Bauer of Beulah, N.D., parents Arlene and Delvin Bauer of Billings; brother David Bauer and family (nephews Gabe and Lucas) of Des Moines, Wash.; sister Annette Schaak (Neal, nephews Carson, Trent, Nickolas and Garrett) of Billings, Mont.; brother Dion Bauer (Raffeala) of Des Moines, Wash.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Darrie was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Ralph and Clara Neuberger and paternal grandfather Walter Bauer.
Arrangements are being handled by Cochran Memorial Chapels of Meeker. Memorials to a charity of choice. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Cochran Memorial Chapel. Mervin Johnson officiating.
Cecelia Knott
August 27, 1918 - September 3, 2005
Cecelia Knott, 87, lifetime resident of Craig, died Sept. 3, 2005, at Sandrock Ridge and went home to be with her Lord on that day.
Cecelia was born on Aug. 27, 1918, to Brendon Patrick and Mary Elizabeth (Marshall) Sullivan in a maternity home on 7th Yampa St. in Craig. She was one of the oldest children raised on the Sullivan homestead ranch and carried her share of responsibility on the ranch herding cattle, sheep and was the first child to get the bum lambs from her father.
She also helped care for her younger brothers and sister in the home and did other ranch chores. She loved the family ranch. She always rode a horse almost five miles to get down to school at Pagoda. She then was boarded in Hayden to attend high school.
On Nov. 21, 1936, she married Johnnie H. Knott in Craig. She received a divorce on Oct. 27, 1961, and then Johnnie passed away on June 7, 1990.
She was an active supporter of her daughter’s activities, such as bands, cheerleaders, acrobats, ballet, tap dancing and boarding school.
She will be deeply missed by her only child, Alice Lenore (Knott) Riley; grandchildren Lance Patrick, Gina Marie and Timothy Sean Riley; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher Timothy, Jerad Wayne, Luke Brendan, Jordan Ray, Breeshawna Marie and Isabelle Grace. They all were her pride and joy.
She also is survived by her sister Jeannette Gruber, and brothers Thomas, Francis, Melvin, Milton and Jim Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; baby twin brothers Patrick and Roger; sister Mary; and brothers Brendan, Patrick C. and Jack. She loved her family, friends and community, and her smile will be missed.
She enjoyed life as a worker, and worked at the Cowen and Palace drug stores as a pharmacist assistant in the 1940s and 50s. She then worked shortly for the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company in the late 50s, handling all the records and assignments in connection with the Craig Dial Conversion.
She then took a job with the dentist Dr. Scott for a few years just prior to becoming a teacher assistant at East Elementary School, until she retired on Aug. 1, 1984. She also did janitorial work for 33 years at the Moffat County Library.
A rosary was recited on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at St. Michael Catholic Church. Memorial services mass were Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. Michael Catholic Church, and burial was beside her father at the Pagoda Cemetery.
Her pallbearers were her nephews, Mike Sullivan, Bob Gruber, Melton Sullivan, Brendan Sullivan, Tad Sullivan, Glenn Duzik and Tim Duzik.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church, Moffat County Library or Museum of Northwest Colorado or given to Grant Mortuary, 621 Yampa Ave., Craig, Colo., 81625.
Stanley Verne Stewart
1943 - 2005
Stanley Verne Stewart, 61, of Craig, passed away Aug. 18, 2005. Verne was born in Meeker in 1943.
He lived in Meeker and Paonia until moving to Greeley in 1962. He enlisted in the Army in 1963 and served three years. In 1967 he married Valerie LaFluer and moved to Cheyenne. While in Cheyenne he began working for Mountain States Telephone, eventually becoming Qwest. After the death of his father he transferred to Glenwood Springs and then back to Meeker. He retired from the telephone company after 33 years. Verne continued to offer telephone services in northwest Colorado with Stewart Telephone Company until his death.
He would stay in Colorado most of his life — teaching his children the love of the outdoors, archery, sports and golf. He volunteered as a firefighter, EMS driver, baseball and archery coach. He was a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
He is greatly loved and missed by many.
Services were held at First Christian Church Aug. 25. He was given military honors by VFW post #4265.
Contributions in his name can be made to Yampa Valley Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Valerie, his son Ty Stewart and daughters Teresa Murray and Tina Whitt; his mother Nellie Stewart; sisters Reba Schaller and Jean Gianinettii; brothers Albert, Tom, Gary, Theo, Frank and Billy Stewart. He is preceded in death by his father, Stanley H. Stewart.
Gene Dillashaw
February 11, 1942 - September 4, 2005
Gene Dillashaw, 63, of Meeker died suddenly Sept. 4, 2005, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
Gene was born on Feb. 11, 1942, in Spur, Texas, the son of Thomas Travis and Alice Devota (Cummins) Dillashaw. His father was in the service during World War II, so the family moved to New Mexico where Gene received his education in the Flora Vista and Aztec schools, graduating with the Aztec High School class of 1959.
On July 20, 1959, he was inducted into the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, serving his country four years. Gene was a proud Marine and member of V.F.W. Post #5843, American Legion Post #74 and the Disabled American Veteran’s, having served as senior vice commander of the New Mexico D.A.V.
Gene returned to New Mexico where he worked in the oil patch and painted houses. He was a master painter and would work throughout the oil field areas supporting his family wherever he went. On Feb. 7, 1974, he was united in marriage to Cecelia Jolly. Gene and Cecelia “retired” and moved to Meeker in 1997 to golf much and paint little. Gene became well known in Meeker for his unwavering honesty and values and ended up painting a lot and golfing a little. He loved the time he spent with his family and friends hunting, fishing, tinkering in his yard and quietly helping around town. He will long be remembered for his broad smile, friendly wave and always wondering “what’s going on here?” attitude.
Survivors include his wife, Cecelia of the family home, six children, Liz Franz and her husband David of Wibeaux, Mont.; Cindy Dillashaw of Laramie, Wyo.; Robbie Dillashaw of Stafford, Va.; Trey Switzer of Cortez, Colo.; Casie Barnes and her husband Greg of Meeker; Rhonda Martin and her husband Brian of Rawlins, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren, one brother, Tommy Dillashaw of Meeker and two sisters, Creola Shahan of Meeker and Becky Greenberg of Atlanta, Ga., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends throughout the western United States.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the Fairfield Community Center with Pastor Jonathan Swope of Faith Baptist Church presiding. Interment with full military honors was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Friends may make memorial contributions to the Gene Dillashaw Memorial Fund in care of Cochran Memorial Chapel which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Gordon Goddard
June 17, 1940 - August 29, 2005
Well-known Rangely resident Gordon R. Goddard, 65, died Aug. 29, 2005, at his home.
Gordon Ray Goddard was born June 17, 1940, in Fruita, the son of Orville Lee and Georgia (Lane) Goddard. The family moved to Rangely when Gordon was seven and he attended school, graduating from Rangely High School.
While still in school he worked as a night watchman for Rio Blanco County and also dug post-holes and fought the gnats at Bonanza. On Oct. 17, 1958, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Covalt in Grand Junction. The family lived in Rangely until moving back and forth from Alaska several times.
In 1980 Gordon and his family started their own construction company, Goddard Construction. Gordon was known throughout western Colorado as an excellent caterpillar operator with a perfect level eye. He enjoyed working hard and spending time with his family hunting, fishing and camping in the mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of the family home, four sons, Toby of New Castle, Greg and his wife Madonna and Colby and his wife Jennifer, both of Rangely and Gordy and his wife Misty of Craig. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Zachary, Justin, Wesley, Hailey and Carrie; one brother, Russell “Bud” Goddard of Rangely and one aunt, Nellie Williams of Grand Junction.
His parents and one sister, Pauline have preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held Sept. 1 at the First Baptist Church of Rangely. Interment followed in the Rangely Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Gordon Goddard Memorial Fund at any First National Bank of the Rockies.
