Lois V. Hatch
October 22, 1920 - August 16, 2003
Longtime Rangely resident Lois V. Hatch, 82, died Aug. 16, 2003, at the Rangely District Hospital.
Lois Verness Massey was born Oct. 22, 1920, on Dry Fork to Louis 'Van' Massey, D.V.M. and Mable Verness Massey. She was raised with her large family in the Vernal area and on Feb. 23, 1942, was united in marriage to 'Jerry' Jeramiah Moroni Hatch. Their marriage was sealed for all time and eternity on March 11, 2000, in the Vernal Temple. Mr. Hatch preceded her in death on May 24, 1997.
A loving and devoted wife and mother, Hatch was a voracious reader. She loved the out of doors, spending a great deal of time hiking the hills and fishing. She also enjoyed embroidery, history and writing poetry.
Survivors include her four children, Iris Nolan and her husband Jim of Oklahoma City; Gaila Bell and her husband Bob, Sharon Stewart and her husband Eddie and Larry Hatch, all of Rangely, 10 grandchildren, Eddie Miller, Clint Miller, Corie Holman, Dianna Holman, Shane Key, Clayton Key, Teresa (Key) Nelson, Sheila (Stewart) Guchess, Eric Stewart and Kyle Stewart, 15 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mable Neiberger of Provo, Utah; Wanda Reynolds of Roosevelt, Utah; four brothers, Zelph Massey of Farmington, N.M.; Norman Massey, Edwin Massey and Don Massey, all of Vernal as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Lois is preceded in death by two grandsons, Jerramie Bell and Jerry Holman and seven siblings, Roy Massey, Sewell Massey, Pearl Stubbs, J.D. Massey, Odis Massey, LaPreal Southam and Mona Brady.
Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the Rangely Cemetery. A visitation with family prayer was held prior to services at the Rangely Mortuary.

William L. Robinson
April 28, 1930 - August 9, 2003
Meeker resident 'Bill' William L. Robinson, 73, died Aug. 9, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
William Lynn Robinson was born April 28, 1930, in Hotchkiss, Colo., the son of Lynn D. and Minerva Luoma Robinson. When Bill was 12 years old the family moved to Grand Junction where he was graduated from Grand Junction High School with the class of 1948. Following his graduation he entered the United States Navy where he was a radio and communication technician.
On Feb. 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Patricia L. Roe in Grand Junction. The couple resided in Hawaii, San Diego and later returned to Grand Junction where Robinson worked as an electronics technician for the F.A.A. and later operated Bill’s Snow Taxi on the Grand Mesa. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and loved to try new business ventures.
In 1967 the family moved to Meeker where he continued to work in the communications industry. He was a member and past-president of the Meeker Lion’s Club and enjoyed wood working, inventing and snowmobiling.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, Pat, of Meeker, Robinson is survived by two daughters, Kathy Zemke and her husband Don of Manchester, Tenn.; Barbie Hallmark and her husband Rob of Sonora, Calif.; two sons, Curt Robinson and Brent Robinson and his wife Cheryl, both of Grand Junction; three grandchildren, Shannon Robinson of Grand Junction; Karrie Cox and her husband Randy of Cody, Wyo., and Kristin Calhoun of Loveland. He is also survived by two brothers, Ron Robinson and his wife Kay of Boise, Idaho, and Al Robinson and his wife Cherry of Grand Junction.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Aug. 14 from Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Lion’s Club Eye Bank through the mortuary office.
Troy Pearce
January 27, 2003
Graveside memorial services for Troy Pearce will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery
with Ran Cochran and members of V.F.W. Post #5843 Officiating.
Troy was the long-time owner of Pearce Automotive. He died following a short illness on Jan. 27, 2003, in Henderson, Nev.
Cochran Memorial Chapels has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Troy H. Pearce

Longtime Meeker resident Troy H. Pearce, 67, died Jan. 27, 2003, in Henderson, Nev.
Troy was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Jensen, Utah, the son of James A. and Venice (Haslem) Pearce. In April of 1943 the family moved to Meeker Where Troy attended school at both the Mesa School and Coal Creek, later attending Rio Blanco County High School where he was graduated with the class of 1954.
Following his graduation Pearce entered the United States Army, serving his country for eight years, returning to Meeker where he owned and operated Pearce Automotive. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed restoring old cars.
Survivors include two sisters, Allene Ingersoll and her husband Bob of Yerington, Nev.; Beth Cooney and her husband Les of Craig; two brothers, Tom Pearce and his wife Ruth and Bob Pearce and his wife Elaine, all of Meeker as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. from the Highland Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post #5843 of Meeker.
Bill Robinson
August 9, 2003
Bill Robinson, 73, of Meeker, died Aug. 9, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital.
Robinson was a communications technician.
Survivors include is wife, Pat, of Meeker, four children, Kathy Zemke of Manchester, Tenn.; Barbie Hallmark of Sonora, Calif.; Curt Robinson and Brent Robinson both of Grand Junction; three grandchildren and two brothers, Ron Robinson of Boise, Idaho, and Al Robinson of Grand Junction.
Memorial services are today at 11 a.m. at Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lion’s Club Eye Bank through Cochran Memorial Chapel, Box 1048, Meeker, Colo., 81641.

Dan L. Argyle
January 31, 1936 - August 8, 2003
Dan L. Argyle, 67, of Clifton, Colo., passed away on Aug. 8, 2003. Argyle was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Manti, Utah. He was a long-time resident of the Meeker area spending time in California, Nevada and Utah.
Argyle was employed as a carpenter. He was also a member of the Elk’s Lodge and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and laughing. Argyle served in the United States Air Force from 1955 until 1957.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Argyle of Clifton; sons Gary Orton of Marysville, Calif., Robert Orton of Collbran, Colo., and David Reddin of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughters Sue Carter of Norwood, Colo., Kathy Cleveringa of Jasper, Minn., Chris Nutter of Littleton, Colo., and Paula Maness of San Diego, Calif.; brother Lynn Christopherson of Price, Utah; sister Brenda Wrightsman of Montrose, Colo. Argyle had 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by one son Michael Orton, three brothers and one sister.
Services were held Aug. 12, 2003, at Highland Cemetery
in Meeker with Robert Orton officiating.

John W. Wharton
February 1, 1907 - August 4, 2003
John W. Wharton, 96, of Grand Junction, Colo., passed away Aug. 4, 2003, at Mantey Heights Rehab and Care Center.
Wharton was born Feb. 1, 1907, to Josiah and Buena Coe Wharton in Rio Blanco County. John was a retired governmental civil engineer.
Surviving John are his wife, Marylee of Grand Junction; children, Joe Wharton, formerly of Denver, George Wharton of LaCrescrenta, Calif., Michael Street, Jim Street, both of Smithville, Mo., Marcia Weingardt of Monroe, Ore.; sister, Mary Walters of Meeker, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Martin Mortuary, Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at 9 a.m. with John Foreman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, Colo., 81506.

Bob Wilber
September 23, 1920 - August 9, 2003
Lifelong Meeker rancher Bob Wilber, 82, died Aug. 9, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
George Robert Wilber was born the son of George David and Anna May (Kracht) Wilber on Sept. 23, 1920, on the family ranch seven miles up river in Meeker.
Bob Wilber had a keen sense of horsemanship and knowledge of the cattle business. His brand, the triangle 11 was registered in his name when he was a young boy. He attended Meeker public schools and following his graduation, at the urging of Freeman Fairfield, Bob attended Barnes Business School for one year before returning to the White River Valley where he ranched on Oak Ridge and Powell Park.
In October of 1944, Bob, while attending the Stray Day Dance at the Oddfellows Hall, Wilber spied a young Margie Laird, won the right to ask her to dance in a coin toss with another young rancher and he and Margie were married Jan. 1, 1945, at St. James Church.
He was active in many community affairs. He was a lifelong member of the Rio Blanco County Stockmans, active in Farm Bureau, the Grange, Rio Blanco County Oldtimers, of which he was a past president and was past president of the Rio Blanco County Historical Society. Bob was a tried and true Republican, routinely lovingly sparring with Margie, a staunch Democrat.
He was a lifelong member of St. James Church, having served on its vestry for many years.
Wilber will long be remembered for his quiet grace, love of western history and his knowledge of the cattle business and his abilities to break horses. In July of 2003 Bob, Margie and his brother, Gerald, were honored as the Honorary Grand Marshals of the Range Call parade.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margie, three daughters, Mary Ann Wilber of Meeker, Sarah Ellen 'Sally' Wilber and her husband Jon Bye of Chandler, Ariz., Pauline Wilber of Denver, one granddaughter, the apple of grandpa’s eye, Anna Marie Stehle, and one brother, Gerald, who resides in the Walbridge Memorial Wing.
Funeral services were held from St. James Church in Meeker with the Reverend Stephen R. Samples officiating. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the church through Cochran Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 1048 in Meeker, which has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Allan Cody Morris
May 4, 1965 - July 15, 2003
Cody Morris, 38, passed away at his home in Kingman, Ariz., July 15, 2003. Cody was born in Spearfish, S.D., on May 4, 1965, to Gerald T. Morris and Judy L. (Bays) Hergenreder. He grew up in Meeker and was graduated from Meeker High School in 1983.
Morris was the proud father of two daughters, Monica and Renee Morris both of Kingman. His daughters were the light of his life and his world revolved around them. He was a truck driver and an avid fisherman. He loved to fish for the big bass on Lake Mead, Ariz., and was also a member of the Kingman Bass Club in Kingman. He also enjoyed hunting, bowling and gardening. He was especially proud of his beautiful flower garden of roses and snapdragons. Cody and his fishing partner, Chris Hornbook, had contests each year to see who could grow the biggest pumpkins, Cody usually the victor with 50-60 pounders. He'll always be remembered for his heartwarming smile, his contagious laughter and his love of family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Morris, daughters Monica and Renee Morris and stepchildren Jack Polasky, Nalani Howard, Robert Howard and Ebony Dupas all of Kingman.
His parents, Gerald and Twila Morris of Meeker and Judy and Ed Hergenreder of Windsor, Colo., also survive him as well as his brother Todd Morris and family of Meeker and his sister Nicole Freeman and family of Fayetteville, Ga., his step-sister Starla Secrest and family and step-brother Garrett Morris all of Grand Junction, Colo. Grandparents surviving are Clara Hackett of North Platte, Neb., Dorothy Morris of Trimble, Tenn., Wilbur and Lois Richardson of Meeker and Helen Hackett of Loma, Colo., uncles and aunts Jim and Karen Bays, Jerry and Linda Bays all of Casper, Wyo., and John and Peggy Bays of Gering, Neb., Stu and Lila Hackett of Mo., Bobby and Pam Hackett of Arkansas, Mike and Sheila Hackett of Maybell, Colo., Rod and Tawni Richardson of Whitewater, Colo., Chuck and LaDonna Armstrong of Fruita, Colo., and Tiger Richardson of Meeker. Included are numerous cousins and extended family members. He was loved dearly by his family and many friends.
Morris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas Morris, Cody and Onalee Bays and Allan Hackett.
The class of 1983 will be planting a tree at Paintbrush Park of Meeker in memory of Morris on Sunday, Aug. 3. Everyone is welcome to attend. A memorial bass fishing tournament has been planned for October 18 in Arizona. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Morris Children Trust for his daughters. Following the tournament Morris' remains will be released in Lake Mead, Ariz., where he will rest in peace.
Memorial services will be held at Meeker Mortuary on Saturday, Aug. 2 beginning at 9 a.m. Pastor Steve Samples will be presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Morris Children Trust at First National Bank of the Rockies in Meeker, Colo., 81641. Cremation has taken place.
Chris (Bubba) Metcalf
September 14, 1975 - July 14, 2003
Chris Metcalf, 28, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2003, at Forest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Miss.
James Christopher Metcalf was born on Sept. 14, 1975, in Natchez, Miss. Metcalf grew up in Cash Bayou and Sicily Island, La. His parents are James Metcalf and Audrey Kipp. He was graduated from Sicily Island High School in 1994. Metcalf was a farmer for many years in Louisiana, then went to roughnecking in Mississippi. He was a member of Foules Church of God.
Metcalf loved life, loved to be around his friends he grew up with. He loved to hunt and fish and was always helping people. Most of all he loved his truck and music. He wanted to be a disc jockey, where he could play music and sing, which made him happy.
Metcalf will always be remembered for his hard work, big smile, joking way, big warm heart and the love he had for his family and friends. Most of all he was proud of Amanda and how much he had helped her in her life. He had achieved a lot of his goals in life.
Funeral services for Metcalf were held July 17, 2003, at Young Funeral Home in Ferriday, La., with Rev. Jerry Sharp of Cash Bayou and Billy Jenkins of Silver Creek, Miss., officiating. Burial followed at Highland Park Cemetery
in Sicily Island under the direction of Young Funeral Home.
Metcalf was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James N. Metcalf of Louisiana; maternal grandparents, Carl and Anne Jeannette Crews of Florida; step-grandparents Don and Ruth Kipp of Colorado; Uncle Rocky Crews of Louisiana; step-sister Rena Davis of Mississippi; and step-brother Russ Kipp of Mississippi.
Survivors include his father, James (Shorty) Metcalf of Cash Bayou, La.; mother and step-father Audrey and Marvin Kipp of Rangely; sister Amanda Metcalf of Rangely; paternal grandmother Mary Metcalf of Cash Bayou; stepbrother and wife, Randy and Marcie Kipp of Clifton, Colo.; step-sisters Lisa Ferrill of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Kim Thomas of Stuart, Fla.; uncles and wives, Randy and Debbie Crews of Stuart, Fla., and Richard and Debbie Crews of Cash Bayou, La.; aunt Carolyn Goussett of Zachary, La.; cousins Kirk Cavin of Baton Rouge, La., Audrey Crews and Rocky Crews of Cash Bayou, La.; godfather and godmother Willard and Patty Kassel of Sicily Island, La., and many more cousins, aunts, uncles and friends who loved him very much. You will live on in all our hearts.
Pallbearers were Tommy Cooper, Josh Ludiker, Kirk Cavin, Rick Gillespie, Benji Nelson and Shawn Ogle. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Crews, Randy Crews, Jackie Johnston, Adam Knight, Aaron Knight and Willard Kassel.

Robert Joyce Story
September 29, 1909 - May 30, 2003
Former Meeker resident Robert Joyce Story, 93, of Homelake, Colorado died May 30, 2003, at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte.
He was born Sept. 29, 1909, in Boonville, Mo., to James Pearl and Iona McDowell Story. He married Fredrique Crockett on Oct. 19, 1947, in Las Vegas, Nev., and she precedes him in death.
Robert was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was also a 65-year member of the Rio Blanco Lodge #80, AF & AM, the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited and The Order of Eastern Star.
He enjoyed white water rafting, reading and playing cards, especially Bridge. He also enjoyed square dancing and writing.
Surviving are a daughter, Karin L. Kruger of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his nieces, Barbara Branscom of Poway, Calif., and Bobbi Wegner of Tribune, Kan.; and four great nieces and great nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and two granddaughters.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from St. James’ Episcopal Church with Military and Masonic rites to follow interment in the Highland Cemetery.
Cochran Memorial Chapels have been entrusted with the local arrangements.
Daniel C. Peach
May 20, 1963 - July 3, 2003
Daniel C. Peach of Rangely, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2003, at his home at Trail Canyon. He was born May 20, 1963, in Hartford, Conn.
Peach is survived by his wife Jayne Kuck-Peach, his son Tyler Peach, parents Don and Anne (Tineke) Peach, his sister Diana Peach, his brother Justin Peach and stepsons Kellen and James Kuck.
Peach was raised in Glastonbury, Conn. He attended Brewster Academy in Maine and Woodstock Academy in Vermont. He moved to Rangely in 1981 where he worked for companies involved in the development of Western Fuels-Utah coal mine.
In December 1982 he married Amy Winchester whom he had met while they were students at Woodstock Academy. They had one son, Tyler, who was born June 3, 1984, in Rangely. In 1985 he and his family moved to Massachusetts where he worked as a carpenter. He and Amy separated and were later divorced.
He returned to Rangely in 1987 where he worked as a pipe fitter, pipeline foreman and heavy equipment operator. In 1992 Dan and Jayne Kuck exchanged commitments and moved to Trail Canyon where they undertook the reconstruction of an old homestead located in one of the most beautiful settings in western Colorado. From this location he did guiding and outfitting; natural gas pumping, metering and well-head maintenance; access road plowing and maintenance; heavy equipment contract work for ranchers and landowners; and in recent months work for Ace West Tucking.
Dan was an excellent musician, and his father said he was a 'master with a guitar.' He was a poet and an artist, particularly with wood and stone. He had that rare combination of artistic talent and practical abilities. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and adventures. Several times he and his father entered the 'Maybe Annual Almost Meeker to Rangely Canoe Race.'
The people for whom he worked respected his abilities and dedication to the idea of a good day’s work. He was particularly proud of the work that he and Jayne did in the restoration of the old homestead at Trail Canyon.
A memorial service for family members was held July 9, 2003, in Rangely.
Donald E. Martin
July 5, 2003
Donald E. Martin, 59, of Meeker died July 5, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
A native of Denver, Martin had served in the Army National Guard and had worked as a gas station attendant throughout life. He enjoyed the time he spent with this wife and attending the Meeker Chuckwagon.
Survivors include his wife Nancy of Meeker.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today, July 10, at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday until noon at Cochran Memorial Chapels Meeker Mortuary.
Ethel Winters (Sally Frye)
July 7, 2003
Ethel Winters (Sally Frye) passed away Monday, July 7, 2003, at her home in Denver.
She and her first husband Randy Frye, lived in Meeker in the early 1950s where Randy was an employee of the telephone company and Sally worked at Pioneers Hospital.
She was the mother of a daughter, Teddie Lee Frye and sons Tommy and Terry.
Services are pending.
Harvey M. 'Mose' Hefley
September 9, 1952 - June 25, 2003
Harvey Mossman 'Mose' Hefley, 50, of Palisade, Colo., passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colo.
A memorial service was held June 29, 2003, at the Palisade First Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Hefley was a respiratory therapist for 22 years. He was also a laborer and furniture warehouse worker.
Hefley was born Sept. 9, 1952, to Charles Harvey Hefley and Mary Edna Clark Hefley in Rangely. He spent his childhood in Rangely, Lake View, Paonia and Mancos, Colo., as well as Scottsdale, Ariz., and Denver. He was a 1970 graduate of Palisade High School and attended Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely.
His 20-year marriage to Janice Harris ended in divorce in 1994.
Hefley had lived in Gering, Neb., Denver, Torrington, Wyo., and Delta.
He enjoyed hunting, football, music, the guitar, singing, Western Colorado history (especially the Rangely area), playing and coaching ball with his children and rock collecting.
Survivors include a son, Clinton 'CJ' (Crystal) Hefley of Gering, Neb.; a daughter, Heather (Mike) Schanhols, of Scottsbluff, Neb.; his mother, Mary Edna, a brother, Dwayne M. Hefley and a sister, Charlayne (Randy) Higginson all of Grand Junction; a granddaughter, Kyleigh Schanhols, a step-grandson, Nathan Schanhols; a granddaughter, Britney Hefley; and four nieces and nephews.
His father, Charles Harvey Hefley, preceded him in death.
Contributions may be made in his memory to the Hefley Museum, Rangely, Colo., 81648, to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 474, Grand Junction, Colo., 81502 or to the charity of one’s choice.
McLean Funeral Home in Palisade was in charge of arrangements.
