Jack B. Murphy
December 25, 1922 - June 5, 2004
Cedaredge - Long time Cedaredge resident, Jack Murphy, died at his home on Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was 81.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church in Cedaredge, Colorado, with Pastor Steve Reinhard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedaredge Cemetery. Members of V.F.W. Grand Mesa Post #9221 will conduct graveside rites.
Jack Bryan Murphy was born on December 25, 1922, to Jesse Roscoe and Letha (Bryan) Murphy in Russellville, Arkansas. He spent his childhood, graduated high school and attended Chaffey College, in Ontario, CA.
On October 23, 1942, Jack married his sweetheart of two years, Virginia Claire Hubbell, at her home in Ontario, CA. They moved to Cedaredge in 1978.
During World War II Jack served as a gunners mate on the USS Flint, in the United States Navy.
Mr. Murphy was a chief security officer for the California Youth Authority, State Prison System. He was a member of the Delta Elks Lodge #1235 for 24 years. Jack was an early supporter of the Deer Creek Golf Course in Cedaredge, having been one of the people who helped organize and start the golf course.
In addition to golf, his interests included hunting and fishing. He was a very talented wood worker, having made one of a kind cabinets and special pieces of furniture for his family. He also enjoyed all types of antler art work. Jack loved to travel and visited every state in the country.
Those grateful to have shared in Jacks life include the love of his life, his wife Virginia, of Cedaredge; one son, Michael Murphy and his wife Renee of Great Falls, MT; two daughters, Susan Manney and her husband Jack of Vallejo, CA, and Gail Raetz and her husband Garrett of Fort Collins, CO; one brother, Paul Murphy and his wife Jeanne of Pine Grove, CA. He is further survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother Lynn Murphy.

Dewey F. Dodge
May 9, 1931 - December 8, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Longtime Hotchkiss resident, Dewey F. Dodge, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at his home. He was 73 years of age.
A visitation for family and friends is planned for Saturday, December 11th from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 11th at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. Bob Rich and members of the Hotchkiss Kiwanis Club will preside. Services will conclude at the lodge.
Dewey F. Dodge was born on May 9, 1931 in Hotchkiss, Colorado to the late Frank W. and Ella (Busby) Dodge. He spent his childhood in Hotchkiss and graduated from high school there in 1949. He continued his education at Denver University graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History.
On July 23, 1997 in Reno, Nevada, Dewey was joined in marriage to Georgia Belle. She survives. He was previously married to Betty Lou Ramey.
Mr. Dodge was a Social Worker, having retired in 1993, from the County of Pueblo after twenty two years of service. He was the Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Hotchkiss and a Former Lieutenant Governor of the Western Slope Division of Kiwanis. Dewey was a former Scout Master and District Executive of the Boy Scouts, as well as a volunteer at the Hotchkiss Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed flying airplanes and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Dodge, of Hotchksis; three sons: Bill Dodge and wife Marilyn of Cape Creek, AZ, Jim Dodge and wife Joyce of East Smithport, PA and Bob Dodge and wife Teresa of Louisville, CO; one sister, Jean Martin of Claremont, CA; two children by marriage, David L. Trujillo and wife Diana of Albuquerque, NM and Eileen T. Groesbeck and husband Philip of Orem, UT. He further survived by eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mr. Dodge was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Kathy Phelps and his former wife Betty Lou Dodge.

Elisabeth Salzgeber
April 5, 1924 - December 7, 2004
Crawford - Delta County resident, Elisabeth Salzgeber passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at her home in Crawford, Colorado. She was 80 years old.
A memorial service will be held in Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at Olympian Hall, from 11:30 - 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to "Second Harvest" / The Food Bank of the Rockies, 10975 E. 47th Ave., Denver, Colorado 80239. Elisabeth Kettiger was born on April 5, 1924 on the east coast of Sumatra, to the late Arnold and Anna (Haefliger) Kettiger.. At the age of six, her family moved back to Switzerland, where she attend and graduated school. After finishing high school, Elisabeth attended a gardening college for three years. During World War II, she was a gardening instructor in Zurich Switzerland, where people would come to learn how to grow vegetables. They would turn their yards and city parks into vegetable gardens, to provide needed food.
On April 22, 1950, in Zurich, Switzerland, Elisabeth married Rudy Salzgeber. They then traveled to Ganado, AZ, on the Navaho Indian Reservation, where she enjoyed working in the childrens' ward of the hospital, and managed the campus laundry with the high school girls. Next, they moved to Denver, CO where they lived for twenty - five years, built a home, and raised their four children. Their next adventure took them to Steamboat Springs, CO, where they owned and operated Ski Town Campground, and over the next twenty - two years they welcomed nine grandchildren.
The past three years, they lived in Crawford, CO. Elisabeth attended the Crawford Community United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Needle Rock Club, and enjoyed volunteering at the thrift shop in Crawford. Elisabeth enjoyed being a housewife and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.
Those grateful to have shared in Elisabeth’s life are her husband, Rudy Salzgeber of Crawford, CO; son Ulrich Salzgeber and wife Janet of Steamboat Springs, CO; three daughters, Christina Lehr and husband Bob of San Francisco, CA; Ursula Miller and husband Mark of Loveland, CO; and Ruth Wentzel and husband Jeff of Crawford, CO; brother Arnold Kettiger and wife Heidi of Switzerland. Elisabeth is further survived by nine grandchildren, Elisabeth and Anya Salzgeber, both of Steamboat Springs, CO, Nicole and Samuel Miller of Loveland, CO, Patrick Miller of Switzerland, Emily McCormick of Colorado Springs, and Lucas, Martin and Corina Wentzel, all of Crawford
Elisabeth was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Ernst Kettiger.

John V. “Jack” Shea
December 24, 1928 - December 7, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta County resident, Jack Shea, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, December 7, 2004. He was 75 years of age.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 10, 2004, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado. Rosary will be led by Tom Fedler at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening the 10th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2004, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta with Father Mark Bettinger and Father Richard Haldane presiding. Burial will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.
John V. Shea, who was known to all as Jack, was born on December 24, 1928, to John E. and Nellie Forrestal (Ryan) Shea in Delta, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Delta and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1947.
On July 24, 1950, Jack married Ozella Allmon in Aztec, New Mexico. They celebrated fifty - four years of marriage this summer. She survives.
Jack served his country in the United States Army. He was a rancher and farmer. He thoroughly enjoyed working on the ranch and tending to his livestock. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. Jack belonged to the Delta Elks Lodge #1235, the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Colorado Cattleman’s Association.
Those grateful to have shared in Jack’s life include his wife, Ozella A. Shea of Delta, CO; a son, Steve Shea and his wife Becky of Delta, CO; four daughters: Kay Montgomery and her husband Larry of Delta, CO, Marlene Smith and her husband Dan of OK, Mary Shea and Al DeGrange of Delta, CO, and Margaret Harmon and her husband Mitch of SD; two brothers: Jim Shea of Delta, CO, and Tom Shea and his wife Rebecca of Grand Junction, CO; and one sister, Helen Pryor and her husband Bill of Monte Vista, CO. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, and nine great - grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nellie Shea; a son, John Patrick Shea; a grandson, Danny Montgomery; sisters: Kathryn Swaim, Margaret Haldane, Agnes Karlen, and Alice Corcoran; and a brother, Richard Shea.

Agnes A. Bishop
December 2, 1916 - December 6, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta County resident, Agnes Bishop, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2004, at the Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale, Colorado. She had just celebrated her 88th birthday.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado. Funeral services will start at 11:00 a.m. on the 10th, at the Chapel, with Pastor John Jayne officiating. Burial will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.
Agnes Arlene Nutter was born on December 2, 1916, to Benjamin Keene and Nancy Wallace (Champe) Nutter in Hereford, Texas. When she was six months old the family moved to Peach Valley. She spent her childhood in Delta and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1934.
Agnes married Charles Clayton Bishop at the Presbyterian Church in Delta, Colorado, in 1937. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1957, in LaJunta, Colorado.
Mrs. Bishop worked for Skyland foods for awhile before going to work as a cook at the old Delta County Memorial Hospital. She became a case worker for the Delta County Department of Social Services and worked there for many years before retiring.
Agnes attended the Delta Christian Church and had been going to the Mid Valley Church in Carbondale since May, 2004. When her children were younger she was very involved in the 4 - H program for many years as a leader. She belonged to the Katherine Rebekah Lodge #65 in Delta. Her interests included playing cards, driving the senior van for many years and being involved in the Arabian Horse Club.

Those grateful to have shared in Agnes’ life include her son, Jerry H. Bishop and his wife Judi of Colorado Springs, CO; three daughters: Sandra Allmon and her husband Doyle of Rifle, CO, Sharon Brenton and her husband Vern of Wheatridge, CO, and Benita Hammond and her husband Howard of Carbondale, CO. She is further survived by ten grandchildren, eighteen great - grandchildren, and one great - great - grandchild.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Bishop; a son, Charles Allen Bishop; and brothers: John T. Nutter, Leanan Nutter, and James Orville Nutter.

Douglas C. Herbison
October 31, 1951 - December 4, 2004
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Douglas C. Herbison, died Saturday, December 4, 2004 at his home. He was 53 years of age.
Services are not planned at this time.
Douglas Charles Herbison was born on October 31, 1951, in Winner, South Dakota, to Charles Robert and Virginia (Hann) Herbison. He spent his childhood in the Denver area and graduated from Wheatridge High School in 1969. He continued his education attending the University of Northern Colorado.
On September 30, 1989, in Delta, Douglas married Cynthia Diana Conger. She survives.
Mr. Herbison was employed at Gibson’s for 18 years in the sporting goods department. There, he enjoyed talking to customers about all the “Big Ones” that got away. In his spare time, he loved to hunt and fish, camp at Lake Powell and hike on the Uncompahgre Plateau.
Surviors include his wife Cynthia D. Herbison of Delta; two daughters: Brandi Dawn Herbison and Amanda Jayne Herbison, both of Delta; one son, Charles Everett Herbison of Delta; his mother, Virginia Herberson of Grand Junction, CO; three sisters: Mary Ann Passerine and husband Steve of Walnut Grove, CA, Jean Herbison of Grand Junction, CO and Barbara Gray and husband Steve of Golden, CO. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Charles R. Herbison; two infant sons, Daniel and Adam and one brother, Jeffrey Herbison.

Randall Raymond Springer
March 14, 1959 - November 30, 2004
Randy passed away at his beloved home, where he enjoyed landscaping, remodeling and visiting with family and friends. His home was a great pride and accomplishment to him and was a place that he truly loved.
To say that Randy was independent would be an understatement. He lived his life strong and courageous. Everyone loved his beautiful smile and spirit. He was not a person that complained, but tried to live his life positive. Randy had many accomplishments through his work with the Paralyzed Veterans of America and his service to the community. He was given an award for Outstanding Young Men of America in 1989. He worked with Hilltop Rehab Center and he was often called upon to counsel a newly paralyzed person. He helped them to believe that life was worth living and that a handicap did not have to keep you from accomplishing your dreams. He was also awarded with The Marquis Who’s Who Publications Board. Who’s Who in the West 1994/1995. He was awarded sports person of the year in 1991 by the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He was an avid skier and sportsman. He worked hard to get his Adaptive Ski Instructor Certificate and it was a source of great pride to him. He also participated in several national competitions in San Antonio and New Orleans. He won numerous gold medals, silver and bronze. He served as President of the Dyno Wheelers for two years. He served in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer in Germany from 1977 to 1980 and was honorably discharged. He had great memories of his military career.
In the last few days, we have had continuous calls from all of the people whose lives he had touched. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Kimberly Marie (Springer) Gossage of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He was due to be a grandfather on December 15th and had already provided financial and loving support to his grandchild. He is survived by his father, Daniel P. Springer; his sisters, Vicki Springer, Lisa Hinchman and her husband Rory, Laura Martin and her husband Marty. He shared a very special relationship with his nieces, whom adored their “Uncle Randy”, Sarah Martin, Cheyenne Martin, and Samantha Hinchman.
He will be tremendously missed by all his family and friends.
Russell T. Cordrey
October 14, 1959 - November 29, 2004
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Russell Cordrey, died on Monday, November 29, 2004 at his residence. He was 45 years of age.
A graveside memorial service will be held at a later time at Claredon Hills Cemetery
in Darien, Illinois.
Russell Thomas Cordrey was born on October 14, 1959 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Albert W. and Barbara M. (Snyder) Cordrey. He spent his childhood and attended school in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
Russell was an Electronic Repairman. He was of the Lutheran Faith. His interests included collecting record albums, photography and listening to music, especially classical music. He also liked to tinker with old televisions and radios.
Survivors include his step mother, Martha Cordrey of Prophetstown, Illinois; and two half sisters, Rachelle Brown of Virginia, MN and Betty Rae of Milwaukee, WI.
Mr. Cordrey was preceded in death by his parents.

Geraldine Ray
February 7, 1922 - November 29, 2004
DELTA - Geraldine G. Ray, 82, of Delta, Colorado, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, following a heart attack.
Geraldine was born on February 7, 1922, on a hill above Delta known as Stony Point, to Edgar Raymond and Lela Ensign Lashley. She was the fourth of seven girls. Most of her childhood was spent on Ash Mesa near Olathe. She attended grade school at the little country school of Highland and graduated from Olathe High School in 1939.
She and her sister, Hazel, ventured to California where she worked as “Rosie the Riveter” at McDonald Douglas in Los Angeles. It was there that, on December 12, 1942, she married George Ray, a young man from her neighborhood on Ash Mesa, who was in the service during World War II. Following George’s discharge, the couple returned to farm on Ash Mesa. They had one son, Delton Bruce Ray.
Geraldine attended a cosmetology school in Grand Junction in order to become a hairdresser. She worked at that occupation in Delta for several years. Geraldine lost her husband of only 26 years on September 12, 1968, creating a huge void and change in her life. They had already sold their farm on Ash Mesa, so she moved to a smaller house within the area and eventually built a home in Delta where she resided until her death.
She traveled to visit relatives and friends, and even took a tour to the Holy Land, as well as traveling around the world. Being on the go was her lifeline. She saw many sights and had countless adventures. Her grandchildren used to believe that she would no doubt be one the first civilians to travel to the moon. With her faith in people and her Lord, she was never afraid and she did not worry about the dangers of travel.
Geraldine was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God in Delta. She enjoyed gospel music and all church activities. She was a member of the Ash Mesa Bible study group, a lifetime member of both the Delta County Historical Society and the Montrose County Historical Society and a member of the Community First Bank Travel Club.
Geraldine’s family and friends were extremely important to her. She loved family gatherings and parties and hosted many herself. She had a very close - knit group of friends who had regular get - togethers. She had a keen sense of humor and a true curiosity. She could easily light up a room with her smile and her bright, cheery clothing. Everyone who knew her, knew that her favorite color was pink.
One of the highlights of Geraldine’s life was working for 17 years at the Grand Canyon in Arizona as a tour bus driver. Being a “people person” and a person of many interests, she never met a stranger and could visit with anyone.
She loved stopping at every roadside stand from the Four Corners to the Grand Canyon, visiting with the Native Americans and buying their beautiful jewelry. She was particularly fond of the beaded necklaces and had a huge collection that she enjoyed wearing.
For twelve years, Geraldine worked at the visitor’s booth at the Black Canyon National Park. She loved wearing the uniform, hat and all, and had a special table in the campground that she liked to think of as her private place. She was so proud to still be working at the age of 80.
Geraldine loved Grand Mesa and especially going there for breakfast. It had been a favorite fishing haunt of her husband’s. She also enjoyed picnics and bonfires. She loved going out to eat any time, any place. Whenever Geraldine’s car left the driveway, she tried to fill it with people. It didn’t make any sense to her to drive around in an empty care if there were people who wanted to go.
Each year, Geraldine devoted the month of January to making scrapbooks with the clippings, photos and memoriabilia that she had collected throughout the previous year. She took a lot of pictures! By keeping daily diaries and preparing her scrapbooks, she documented many years of history.
Geraldine always sang the praises of her Lord and was looking forward to entering the Pearly Gates. She truly went Home on Sunday.
Geraldine is survived by her son Bruce and his wife Pam, of Olathe; three grandsons, David (Cheryl) of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Devin (Deena), of Olathe; and Dean (Cassy) of Baxter Springs, Kansas. Great grandchildren are Derek and Daniel of Ft. Leavenworth; Sadie of Baxter Springs; Chelsea, Garhett and Lane of Olathe.
She is also survived by sisters, Helen (Leonard) Burch of Olathe; Arla Schmalz of Delta; Edra Moore of Lancaster, California; Bonnie Petrafeso of Lakewood; and Marilyn (Harvey) Cox of Montrose. She had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins with whom she was very close.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Hazel Hare.
Funeral services will be held for Geraldine on Thursday, December 2nd at 10:00 a.m., at the First Assembly of God, Delta, with Pastor Lee Ponder officiating. Public visitation will be held Wednesday, December 1st from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service in Delta. Visitation will also be offered at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Assembly of God, 762 Dodge St., Delta, CO 81416.
