Charlotte L. Argyle
June 6, 1930 ~ January 17, 2004
Charlotte L. Argyle was born on June 6, 1930, to the late Ella and O.K. Linderman of Meeker, Colo. She was a resident of Rio Blanco County for more than 40 years of her life. She departed this world on Jan. 17, 2004, in San Diego, Calif., from emphysema.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years Dan L. Argyle and son Michael A. Orton. She leaves to mourn four daughters: Linda Carter of Montrose, Colo., Kathryn Cleveringa of Jasper Minn., Christine Nutter of Littleton, Colo., Paula Maness of San Diego, Calif.; three sons: Gary Orton of Marysville, Calif., Robert Orton of Collbran, Colo., David Reddin of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister Donna Linderman and brother Buddy Linderman of Grand Junction, Colo., 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Charlotte was a loving, caring woman who loved her family deeply. Her personality and wit would put a smile on faces without fail. She lived her life to the fullest and raised eight beautiful children who in turn gave her love. Her courage, pride, and loving nature will never be forgotten.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2949 Hwy 50 in Grand Junction, Colo., at 2 p.m.
Velma V. Bringard
October 20, 1941 ~ January 18, 2004
Velma V. Bringard, 62, of Meeker, died Jan. 18, 2004, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
Velma V. Peterson was born Oct. 20, 1941, in Meeker, the daughter of Clarence and Mable (Thompson) Peterson. She was raised in Meeker and for 18 years worked as a nursing assistant at Pioneers Hospital.
She moved to Las Vegas where on Jan. 20, 1981, she was united in marriage to Steven Bringard. He survives in the family home. While in Las Vegas she worked as a nurse’s aide at Valley Hospital, eventually returning to Meeker where she worked at Watt’s Ranch Market and Bowstrings.
Velma was devoted to her family and friends and loved spending time in the outdoors. As her health failed, she enjoyed watching the wildlife near her home.
In addition to her husband, Steve, she is survived by her children, Jeannie, Kathy, Bud and Billy, three step-children, Tony, Tina and JayLee, 28 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Iona Adamson of Meeker, one brother-in-law, Leland 'Mac' McClain of Meeker and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Rusty and one brother, Pete.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Cochran Memorial Chapel with inurnment in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Velma Bringard Memorial Fund through the mortuary office.
Laura Hill Bowler Leavitt Clark Steele
November 21, 1915 ~ June 19, 2004
Our loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend Laura Hill Bowler Leavitt Clark Steele, 88, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2004, at her home in Vernal, Utah, with family by her side. She was born to Harry Hill and Hattie Jane Bowler on Nov. 21, 1915, in Gunlock, Utah. Laura married Lemuel Smith Leavitt in the St. George Temple in 1935. He passed away in 1941. She then married John Enon Clark on July 24, 1942. He later passed away in December of 1987. Lastly, Laura married Robert Steele on April 19, 1990, and he passed away on Oct. 8, 2001.
Laura loved her family, friends, church and dancing. She also enjoyed spending her time reading, singing, cooking and bowling. John and Laura enjoyed going hunting and fishing together, and they did it often. Laura loved to travel, and tried to do it as often as she could. She also shared a love for handwork, and loved to cook and serve food to her friends and family. Laura belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and held many callings in her church.
She served in the primary, Relief Society, young women’s and Sunday school. She also served a stake mission for her church with her husband, Robert Steele.
Laura had a personality that was very caring and sharing, she also had a wonderful sense of humor. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. When she lived in Bonanza with John they shared their home with many friends and family, their home was always full of love for others. Later, they moved to Vernal, where she has lived the remainder of her life.
Laura is survived by her son, Mitchell John (Colleen) Clark of Vernal. Her daughters, Kathleen (Dan) Robbins of Vernal and Patricia Clark Walker of Salt Lake City. Along with Carol Leavitt of Rangley and Christy Leavitt of Vernal. Also, 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by three husbands; two sons, Lowell Leavitt, Darwin Leavitt, six grandchildren, parents and siblings.
Laura’s services was held at the Vernal 2nd Ward LDS church on June 24, 2004, at 11 a.m. Friends and family may call from 6-8 p.m. on June 23, 2004, at the Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary, and also one hour prior to services at chapel. Burial will be located at the Vernal Memorial Park.
Ruth M. Kracht
May 27, 1932 ~ June 27, 2004
Longtime Meeker resident Ruth M. Kracht, 72, died June 27, 2004, at Pioneers Hospital after an extended illness.
Ruth May Bivens was born May 27, 1932, in Peetz, Colo., the daughter of Benjamin and Helen (Simpson) Bivens. As a young girl, she lived in Meeker briefly before moving to California where she was graduated from high school and attended Compton College. Following college she worked as a Western Union Operator until she returned to Meeker where she resumed her friendship with Bill Kracht and the couple was married Aug. 16, 1953, by Father Will Richards at St. James’ Church.
After her marriage, Ruth worked for Mountain Bell as a telephone operator and later for the Meeker Chamber of Commerce. Her greatest pride, however, came from being a homemaker and mother. She loved to cook, garden and can food, was an excellent seamstress and artist. She was a devoted member of St. James’ Church having served countless years on the Altar Guild and was also a member of St. James’ Guild.
In addition to Bill, her husband of 50 years, she is survived by three children, Linda Kracht of Riverton, Wyo., Bill Kracht, III of Meeker and Jolene Teeters of Stanwood, Wash. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Maggie Flowers of Houston, Mo.; Shawn Uncapher of Missoula, Mont., Kammi Uncapher of Oakwood, Ga.; Joseph Pyatt of Freeburg, Illinois; Steven Kracht of Meeker; Ayron Kracht and Brandan Kracht, both of Belleville, Ill., and Lela Teeters of Stanwood, Wash. One brother, Bob Bivens and his wife, Kay of Meeker and one sister, Jean Simmons and her husband Bill of Sterling also survive as do numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 30 from St. James’ Episcopal Church with Father Steve Samples officiating. Interment will be made at 1 p.m. today in the Christian Cemetery
near Peetz, Colo.
Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Elizabeth Amy (Liz) Watt
May 20, 1907 ~ June 19, 2004
Elizabeth Amy (Liz) Watt, 97, passed away on June 19, 2004, at Larchwood Inns in Grand Junction.
She was born in Fort Collins on May 20, 1907, the eldest child of Dr. Louis Walter and Amy Francelle Avery Fee. She grew up in Wiley, Colo., where one of her earliest memories was going with her father on house calls in horse and buggy. After graduating from high school she attended college in Fort Collins, received her teaching certificate and taught in a one-room school.
Later she took a teaching position in Wilson Mesa where she met a handsome cowboy by the name of Thomas F. Watt.
They were married Feb. 14, 1931, in Montrose, Colo., and were blessed with five children.
At various times in their married life, Tom and Liz lived in Norwood, Montrose, Delta, Meeker, Grand Junction and Laguna Hills, Calif. They lived in Meeker for more than 50 years and always considered that their home. Liz was a particularly social and active person; she loved having family picnics and all remember celebrating the 4th of July in Meeker. She was involved with church activities, bridge clubs and also loved to travel to various destinations to watch grandchildren participate in their activities.
Tom and Liz moved to Grand Junction in 1996 and enjoyed life at The Atrium until Tom passed away in 2000. Liz moved to The Fountains in 2000, where she resided until shortly before her death.
She will always be remembered as a remarkable grandma, mom and friend to many.
Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her three brothers, George, Robert and James. She is survived by her five children, Anne F. Gentry of Bigfork, Mont., Dr. Thomas L. Watt of Glyndon, Minn., Harry A. Watt of Meeker, Sally E. Smith of Grand Junction and Richard J. Watt of Palisade as well as 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the St. James Episcopal Church in Meeker on Friday, June 25 at 10 a.m. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Western Colorado at P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, Colo., 81506 or the St. James Episcopal Church of Meeker at 368 4th St., Meeker, Colo., 81641.

Lucille Marian Jones
August 20, 1927 ~ June 18, 2004
Lucille Marian Jones, age 76, died peacefully Friday June 18, 2004, at her home in Page, Ariz. Born Aug. 20, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Josephine Gasteier.
Lu grew up in Chicago and was a high school graduate. She moved to San Diego, Calif.,where she met Evert Jones. They were married Jan. 20, 1961, in a friend’s home in La Mesa, Calif.
They moved to Rangely in 1967 where they were owner/operators of 'Colorado West Printing and Photography.'
After retiring they moved to Fruita, Colorado in the mid 1990s.
Evert passed away March 2, 1999, and Lu moved to Page, Ariz., to be with her family.
She loved her family and always put them first. Always friendly and giving she never met a stranger.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed going to church. Lu is survived by her daughter Terry (Larry) Willis of Page, Ariz., grandchildren; Belinda (Jeff) Blake of Page, Del (Debbie) Willis of Grand Junction and Ty (Stacy) Willis of Grand Junction, seven great grandchildren, countless nieces and nephews and sister Josephine Janke of Chicago, Ill.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Evert Jones, her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
A memorial service was at held 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Page, Ariz., and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Northeast Christian Church, 2001 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction.
Virginia Duff
June 29, 1917 ~ April 4, 2004
Virginia Duff, 86, of Meeker, died April 4, 2004, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker. Virginia Whalin was born June 29, 1917, on Wilson Creek in Moffat County, the daughter of Walter and Inez (Ely) Whalin. The large Whalin Family were well known in the area and upon her graduation as salutatorian from Rio Blanco County High School, Virginia set out on a life filled with travel and adventure. She had a keen mind and love of music and reading.
The last several years she has resided in the Walbridge Memorial Wing.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Console of Meeker, Doris (Clyde) Console of Deming, N.M., one brother Bill (Lynn) Whalin of Denver as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Her two children, Gregory and Theresa Frizzell, parents, two sisters, Ethelyn Crawford and Jean Lindsey and two brothers, George and Wilbur have preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. from Cochran Memorial Chapel with inurnment in Highland Cemetery.
Linda Dee McLennan Pittsenbargar
October 8, 1948 ~ June 18, 2004
Linda Dee McLennan Pittsenbargar, age 55, passed away at the University of Utah Hospital on Friday, June 18, 2004. Linda was born on Oct. 8, 1948, to Mack and Beulah Carr McLennan in Larimine, Wyo. She married John Pittsenbargar in Vernal, Utah, on Dec. 4, 1971.
Linda was very selfless and gave her time to many people around her. Linda was a member of E.S.A. and was a past state president of Colorado’s E.S.A. She enjoyed working with St. Judes Children’s research hospital as well as the Easter Seals Foundation. She would also share her time with children with audio dysfunctions through high school and at home.
She enjoyed challenges, especially raising grandchildren. Linda is survived by her husband, John; her son, Wyatt; her daughter, Piper; her granddaughters, Breanna and Harley and grandson Aaron. Along with her granddaughter, Tashia; her grandsons, Billy and Dalton; her stepdaughter, Vickie and stepson Scott; also step-granddaughters, Lisa, Mariah and Amanda; and great-great stepsons, Asa and Zeke.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at noon at the Rangely, Colo., Cemetery
under the direction of the Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary in Vernal, Utah.
Mary A. Murray
January 7, 1914 ~ June 10, 2004
Long-time Meeker resident Mary A. Murray died June 10, 2004, at the Walbridge Memorial Wing where she has resided the last several years.
Mary Archer Holland was born Jan. 7, 1914, in Denver, the daughter of John Archer and Josephine (Fitzpatrick) Holland. She moved to Meeker as a toddler and attended Meeker Public Schools. On April 14, 1933, she married her classmate William J. Murray at Holy Family Catholic Church. The couple ranched for many years around Meeker. Bill preceded her in death in 1992.
A devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mary served tirelessly on the Altar and Rosary Society and for many years made noodles by the thousand for the annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner. She was also a former member of the Mesa Club as well as the Fortnightly Club. She loved gardening, working in her flowerbeds and cooking. She was a loving mother and grandmother but had a great affection for her great-grandchildren who called her 'G G'.
Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn Carstens and her husband Marvin, two grandsons, Joe and his wife Tina of Rangely and Devin and his wife Kris Murray of Hudson, Ohio, five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Joshua, Drew, Maryinna and Owen, her daughter-in-law, Margaret 'Pan' Murray of Roaring River, North Carolina; one sister, Norine Holland of Meeker and one sister-in-law Maxine Holland of Florence. She is also survived by several special nieces and one nephew. In addition to her husband, Bill, she is preceded in death by her son, William J. 'Bill' Murray, Jr., and her two brothers, Bud and Barney Holland.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12 from Holy Family Catholic Church with Randall Cochran officiating. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Friends may make memorial contributions to the Walbridge Memorial Wing Activity Fund through Cochran Memorial Chapel which was entrusted with the arrangements.
Bonnie M. Meeks-Oliver-Bartels

Bonnie M. Meeks-Oliver-Bartels went home to be with the Lord June 13, 2004.
Born Aug. 28, 1921, in Marshall, Ark. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was well known for her homemade cinnamon rolls, yeast rolls and carrot cake. She loved reading, dining out and soap operas.
Preceded in death by husbands, Lorin (Red) Oliver and Ken M. Bartels, son, Lorin D. Oliver, grandchildren, Dawn Pearl, and Jackson and Spencer Lovings. Survived by sister, Bea Tishma, loving children, Edna Oliver,
Jackie Pearl, Mary Fisher, Patti (Bob) Anaya, Sharon (Larry) Spalding, Joe Oliver and Carol (Lorin) Oliver, 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Viewing Wednesday, noon to 7 p.m. Service Thursday, 2 p.m., Lynn Gardens Baptist Church.

Corona and Gregory J. Gonzales, grandfather to Michael D. Gonzales, Nicholas S. Corona and Vanessa Ventura, deceased. Brothers and sisters: Eddie, deceased, Frances, Tony, Fernando, John, baby Rosa, deceased, Nash, deceased, baby Jim, deceased, Bobby, Danny, Albert, Geno, Richard and countless nieces and nephews.

Kay Sandra Chambers
1938 ~ 2004
Kay Sandra Chambers, 65, was surrounded by her family at the time of her death on Monday morning, May 17, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Chambers, who had been diagnosed with cancer in 2001, had been in remission until recently.
Chambers is survived by her brother, Royce Gilberts of Hollendale, Wis.; her daughters; Denise Cantafio of Steamboat Spring, Amy Michels stepdaughter of Dan, Wis., Annette Hall-Blomquist of Hayden and Lori Quinn of Meeker; her granddaughters, Monica Lee of Denver; Jessica Quinn of Meeker; Rosanna Slingerland of Loveland, Colo.; Allison Hall of Boulder and Alicia Hall of Hayden and her great-granddaughter Madison Mickey of Meeker. Chambers is also survived by her long-time companion and best friend, Celistino Martinez of Meeker.
Chambers was preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Winifred Gilberts, her sister Norma Ilene Gilberts and her son Michael Leonard Armato Chambers.
Chambers was a long-time resident of Meeker, where she relocated from Wisconsin with family in 1971. She was not only active in the family guide and outfitting business for more than three decades, but worked full-time in her chosen profession as a registered nurse. She received her associate of science in nursing from Mesa College in 1980, her bachelor of science in nursing from Mesa State College in 1989 and her master of science in nursing from the University of Colorado in 1996. In December of 1997 she was board certified as a gerontological nurse by the gerontological nursing center and was considered an expert in geriatric medicine. Being a nurse was a dream of hers that she had put on hold for more than 20 years to raise her family and work along with her previous husband, Dean Chambers, in developing a successful business.
Over the years, Kay worked as a registered nurse at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker and Denver General Hospital in Denver. As a nurse practitioner she was employed at the Veteran’s Admission Nursing Home in Rifle, as well as working occasionally at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
Chambers spent her leisure time pursuing her interests in travel, fishing and golf, as well as enjoying time at her cabin. She enjoyed life to the fullest, particularly when she was spending time with her family and many, many friends.
In 2000, she was nominated for the Nightingale Award bestowed by the Colorado Nurse’s Foundation. This prestigious award was founded in 1985 by the University of Colorado School of Nursing; honoring Colorado’s registered nurses for excellence in human caring. It was recognized that above and beyond the exemplary care Chambers provided to patients, she served as a preceptor for nursing students dedicating great effort to promote long-term care as a career.
It was noted on the evening of March 4, 2000, at the time of the presentation of the Nightingale Award Chambers’ basic philosophy of medical care was that, 'You can’t always cure, but you can always care.' In passing, medical science was not able to find a cure, but those that knew and loved her will always care. Chambers was a courageous woman who lived by her own terms and died by her own terms. She will be forever missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at Sleepy Cat Resort on June 12 at 5 p.m. in Meeker.

Connie Delaney
February 8, 1924 ~ May 19, 2004
Connie Delaney died on May 19, 2004, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was born Feb. 8, 1924 at Los Angeles, Calif. In 1946 she married Robert Delaney, and moved to Glenwood Springs, Colo. She is survived by her husband, Robert Delaney, of Glenwood Springs; sons Rob Delaney and Ralph Delaney and daughter, Diane Delaney all of Glenwood Springs; grandchildren Laurie Delaney and Ryan Delaney also of Glenwood Springs; brother Ralph Wheat of Northridge, Calif.
Funeral services have been scheduled at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Palm Desert, Calif., on May 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. and at St. James Episcopal Church in Meeker on June 2 at 11 a.m. with interment at Highland Cemetery
in Meeker. A memorial service will be held later in Glenwood Springs, at a time to be announced.
Edemia Gallegos Rooks
January 31, 1918 ~ May 14, 2004
Edemia Gallegos Rooks died May 14, 2004, at her home after a long bout with cancer.
Edemia Gallegos was born on Jan. 31, 1918, in Sandy Arroyo in Huerfano County, CO, to the late Julian and Amalia Quintana Gallegos.
She was reared in Walsenburg, Fruita, Cameo and Grand Junction, but when her family moved to Mt. Harris, Co., she became employed by the Winder and Wyman families of Craig. She met and married her late husband, Russell J. Rooks while there and they married on Nov. 7, 1939 in Craig, Co.
They lived in Rangely; Casper, Wyo; Worland, Wyo; and North Dakota before relocating and settling in Grand Junction in 1955.
Mrs. Rooks retired from St. Mary’s Hospital in 1989, where she worked as a Ward Clerk.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph LRay Rooks (Peggy Jean) of Edmond, Okla., and James Russell Rooks (Peggy Lee) of Grand Junction; seven grandchildren, Rae (Matt) Dixon, and Maureen Rooks of Edmond, Okla., Christopher Rooks, serving with the U.S. Embassy in South America, twins, Andrew of Oklahoma City and Andrea (Mike) Burnes of Alaska, Angela (Richard) Van Dyke of Eagle, Colo., Terri (Dave) Oren of Highland Ranch, Colo.; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by six brothers, Gene (Delphie) of Clovis, Calif., Joe (Nancy) of Meridian, Idaho, Walter (Bea) and David (Patricia) of Albuquerque, N.M., Roy of Santa Fe, N.M., and Gary (Lynette) of Grand Junction; and six sisters, Stella Rice of Carbondale, Ill., Eva Fruit (Sid) and Sarah Nolan of Grand Junction, Marye (Lee) Lucero of Hesperus, Colo., Barbara Castillo of West Valley City, Utah and Romelia (Jerry) Lewis of Jacksonville, Fla.
Edemia was preceded in death by her husband, Russell J. Rooks; her parents, Julian and Amalia Gallegos; her brothers, Jose Ubaldo, Eugenio, Florentino I and Florentino II, Herman, Valentin and Sam; and two sisters, Josie Hyre and Otelia Gallegos.
Mrs. Rooks was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and a member of the Territorial Daughters of Colorado.
Rosary was recited at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., May 22, at St. Joseph’s Church. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery
where she was buried next to her beloved late husband, Russ, and her parents.
Contributions may be made in her memory to St. Joseph’s Church, 3rd and White, or Hospice of Western Colorado.
The family of Edemia Rooks wishes to take this opportunity to thank members of the St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen, Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, the Clifton Fire Department, who responded on more than one occasion and especially to Rosemary Halney for her devotion to my sister for nine years in being her home Eucharistic Minister; and her sister-in-law, Mary Gallegos.

Tyland S. Caldwell, 21, of Rangely died May 22, 2004, in rural Rangely, the result of a motorcycle riding accident.
Tyland Seth Caldwell was born May 10, 1983, in Meeker. He was raised in Rangely where he graduated with the Rangely High School Class of 2001. Following his graduation he attended Colorado Northwestern Community College. He was currently working in the oilfields as an equipment operator.
Tyland loved to be on the move. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting, motorcycling, four-wheeling and barbecuing.
He was a loyal and devoted friend and loved the camping trips with his 'bros', working on his 70 1/2 Camaro and spending time with his nieces and nephew. His smile, infectious laugh and great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Kathy Caldwell of Rifle, two sisters, Brystal (Clint) Hazelbush of Rifle and Kyleen (Brandon Lane) Caldwell of Grand Junction, two nieces, JoAnna and Kerrin and one nephew, Garyn; his grandmother, Sheila Caldwell of Rangely, two aunts, Colleen (Keith) Poole of Steamboat Springs; Lenora (Roddy) Smuts of Rangely; one uncle, Leonard (Diana) Caldwell of Meeker, numerous cousins and his 'bros.'
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26 from the Rangely Christian Church. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Tyland S. Caldwell Memorial Fund through First National Bank of the Rockies.
Cochran Memorial Chapels was entrusted with the arrangements.
