Jacqueline 'Jackie' Conwell
October 17, 1934 ~ March 11, 2004
Jacqueline 'Jackie' Conwell, 69, of Grand Junction, formerly of Rangely, passed away on March 11, 2004.
Conwell was born Oct. 17, 1934, to Lamar and Eula Mae Burdick in Provo, Utah. She married Earl Conwell on March 24, 1954, in Aspen, Colo.
She was a homemaker, gave guitar lessons and owned an upholstery business in Rangely for many years.
The Conwells enjoyed many outdoor activities. They spent many years collecting antiques and artifacts. After they retired, they spent winters in Quartzsite, Ariz., prospecting for gold.
Conwell and her brothers and sisters formed the Burdick Family Western Band. They performed at Knott’s Berry Farm, on many radio and television shows and for many rodeo dances in Utah and Colorado.
She is survived by daughter, Rita Maynard of Broomfield, Colo., a son Bob Conwell of Ogden, Utah, five grandchildren, two sisters, Dolores Rowley of Bakersfield, Calif., Jeri Ashurst of West Valley, Utah, and two brothers, Hugh Burdick of Glenwood, Utah, and John Burdick of Panguitch, Utah.
Graveside services were held March 15 at the Rangely cemetery.
Judith M. Bales
Judith M. Bales passed away at her home in Bumblebee Hills, Texas, after a long illness. She was born on March 24, 1937, to Floyd and Marjorie Wright in Shadyside, Ohio. On Aug. 25, 1987, she married H. Richard Bales in Anderson, Texas. Bales was a brilliant academic, graduating valedictorian of her high school class and Magna Cum Laude from Kent State University. She was a registered health information technologist employed by Sid Peterson Hospital. In addition to her medical work, she also taught medical courses at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely.
Bales enjoyed the splendor of the Hill Country spending time on the river, visiting local state parks or enjoying the bluebonnets. She was a member of the Kerr County Paddlers Canoe Club and recently joined the Hill Country Automobile Club attending car shows in her ‘54 Nash.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, daughter Alysse and son-in-law Ken Rueckert of California, her mother Marjorie Wright of Ohio, sister Dianne Greer and her husband Bob of Pennsylvania, two stepsons, Scott Bales of Arizona, Rick Bales of Missouri, and a stepdaughter Marci Peschke of Dallas, Texas. She will be missed by her five grandsons, five granddaughters, and six nieces. In addition, she leaves a host of friends and former co-workers.
A small service was held at the Little Chapel at Mo Ranch on March 16 to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to Vista Care Hospice of Kerrville, Texas, Mo Ranch, or any organization that addresses the well being of animals. There will be no viewing, cremation arrangements were under the care of Wright’s Funeral Parlor of Kerrville.
Velma Mary Soper
January 15, 1937 ~ March 7, 2004
Velma Mary Soper of Grand Junction passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital March 7, 2004, at the age of 67.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Highland Cemetery
in Meeker. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the services.
Velma was born Jan. 15, 1937, to John and Mary (Swett) Despain at Henry Fork, Utah. She spent her childhood and attended schools in Vernal, Utah.
Velma married Jimmy Atwood who preceded her in death. Later she married Keith Soper who also preceded her in death.
Velma was a retired bank teller. She had been a life long resident of Meeker before moving to Grand Junction. She was a member of the LDS Church in Meeker and was an avid golfer.
Velma is survived by sons, Timmy Dee Atwood and his wife Cindy of Chalis, Idaho, Mike Atwood and his companion Tim Wolf of Grand Junction; daughter Tammy Adair of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; brother John Despain and his wife Gail of Manilla, Utah; sisters, Verla Robbins of Vernal, Utah, Vernita Hallie Bindel of Manilla, Utah, Velva Merrell and her husband Red of Payson, Utah, Opal Eaton of Idaho; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Tina Marie Atwood and ex-husband Jimmy Atwood.

Sherian Elaine Linderman
August 12, 1939 ~ March 6, 2004
Sherian Elaine Linderman, 64, of Grand Junction, died March 6, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Services were held March 10 at Callahan Edfast Mortuary of Grand Junction.
Her life with us began in California on Aug. 12, 1939, when she was born to Tommy and Shirley Stotts. She lived her childhood in western Colorado and was graduated from Rifle High School in 1957.
She moved to Meeker where she met and married the love of her life, Buddy K. Linderman, on Aug. 29, 1958. To this union, three children were born Kenneth Bart, Kim Elaine and Ronald Dean. After working for the county clerk and recorder in Meeker, she and her family moved to Denver where she worked for the county clerk and recorder in Golden, Colo. She then moved to Longmont, Colo., and was employed with IBM in an upper management position for 27 years before retiring in October 1994.
In 1996 they moved to Grand Junction, where she loved spending time decorating her home, working outdoors in her yard, plating many flowers, enjoyed the peace and quiet of fishing with Bud and spending time with her grandchildren and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father and an infant son. She is survived by her loving husband Bud, children Kim Held of Grand Junction, Ron Linderman and wife Laura of Waco, Texas, sister and brother-in-law Relda and Gary Coulter of Meeker and sister-in-law Donna Linderman of Grand Junction, seven grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Jessie Gordon
Memorial service
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jessie Gordon was held March 13 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Rangely.
Jessie Jewel Osborn was born in Lehigh, Okla., on Aug. 24, 1911, to Sam and Mary (White) Osborn.
She was their fifth child but she and her older brother, Roger, were the only two to live with her maternal grandmother, who died when she was six.
Her father then moved to Trinidad with the two children, and later to the Grand Junction area.
When she was 10 her father sent her to live with a succession of families to clean house and look after their children.
She was a nurse’s aide at Colorado General Hospital in Denver when she met and married Gerald A. Gordon, who had just returned from a Navy enlistment. They moved with their daughter, Beatrice to Omaha, Neb., where their sons Daniel and Gerald W. were born.
Unable to find work during the depression, Gerald re-enlisted in the Navy and they moved to California, returning to Denver in 1938. She had made her home there until moving to Rangely with her son Dan in 1999. She entered Rangely Long Term Care in October of 2001.
Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, son Gerald, daughter and son-in-law Beatrice and Orville Wallace, and granddaughter Diane Dawson.
She is survive by her son Daniel (Ronda) Gordon, grandchildren Donna (Robert) Espinosa of Littleton; Linda Gordon of Rangely; Patricia Gordon of Englewood; grandson-in-law Scott Dawson of Granite Bay, Calif.; Kathy (Dan) Ritchlin of Deming, N.M.; Terry (LeRoy) Lacker of Alvarado, Texas; Steve (Emily) Wallace of Deming, N.M.; Mike (Carol) Gordon of Bailey and Mark (Gayle) Gordon of Loveland; 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Naomi Ruth White
December 31, 1914 ~ March 3, 2004
Naomi Ruth White, 89, was welcomed into the home of Ross and Mina Agee on Dec. 31, 1914, in Paduca, Texas.
She was welcomed to her heavenly home on March 3, 2004, from her last home here on earth at Larchwood Inns, Grand Junction, Colo.
White, along with her parents and two siblings, moved to a homestead north of Meeker in 1918. She attended the Meeker Elementary School and was graduated from Rio Blanco County High School as valedictorian of the class of 1932. She attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., where she met her husband, Dave White. They were married March 23, 1934.
They shared a love for God’s creation. During their early married life they spent their summers building and cleaning trails for the Forest Service.
They loved to hunt and fish. Nothing made her mouth water as much as a pan of fresh-caught trout cooking over a campfire. In later years they enjoyed trips to Alaska, as well as exploring many of the scenic beauties of the lower 48.
White enjoyed arts and crafts. She and Dave were avid 'rock hounds.' Visitors to the home often received something beautiful made from polished agate, opal or some other semiprecious stone.
White also loved sewing, quilting and rug making.
They loved children and, although they never had any of their own, they tutored and mentored hundreds of boys and girls.
During World War II there was a shortage of teachers so, because of her love for children, she got an 'emergency' teaching certificate and began her teaching career in the rural schools of Gunnison County.
During the summers she continued her education at Western State College where she earned her B.A. and a lifetime teaching certificate.
In 1953 they moved to Meeker where she accepted a position as teacher of the Marvine School. Two years later she began teaching elementary school in Meeker and continued there until her retirement in 1973.
She moved to the Grand Junction area in 1984 where she resided until her home going.
White was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dave, her parents, Ross and Mina Agee and her brother Julian Agee.
She is survived by one sister, Cleora Amick of Meeker, two brothers, Carol Agee of Fort Collins and Walter Agee of Grand Junction, as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
A memorial service for family and close friends was held March 8 at the home of her brother, Walter Agee. A memorial service for family and friends in the Meeker area will be scheduled at a later date.

Herbert E. Anderson
July 16, 1939 ~ February 19, 2004
Herbert Eugene Anderson, 64, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at the United Medical Center West in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Anderson was born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., on July 16, 1939, to Carl and Margrete Villa Anderson. He was raised, along with five siblings, on the home ranch in Powell Park near Meeker. Anderson attended the Powell Park School during his younger years and was graduated from Meeker High School in 1957. He attended Midwest Bible and Missionary Institute in St. Louis for two years.
Anderson met Janice Fulton at the Bible Institute and they were married July 11, 1958, in Grandview, Iowa, in a double wedding ceremony with Jan’s twin sister and husband.
Anderson worked on the family ranch in Powell Park for several years and later worked for his father-in-law at the Fulton Garage in Grandview, Iowa. During this time, Herb and Jan were blessed with three children; Mark, Alan and Lori. In 1965, Anderson moved his family to Meeker to work as a lineman for White River Electric. In 1971, the family moved to Potter, Neb., where he worked for the Rural Electric Company, now High West Energy, as a line foreman. In 1980 they moved to Pine Bluffs, Wyo., where Anderson accepted the position of line superintendent and was later promoted to operation’s manager. His career with High West Energy spanned almost 30 years. He retired in 2000.
Anderson is survived by his wife Jan of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., son Alan Anderson and wife Linda of Bulverde, Texas, daughter Lori Kemper of Casper, Wyo., two grandchildren Kyle Anderson and Sara Kemper, his mother, Margrete Anderson Johnson of Meeker, three brothers, Harold and Gus of Meeker, Louis of Cedaredge and sister Marie of Great Fall, Mont. He is preceded in death by son Mark 1981, father Carl 1985 and sister Doris 1989.
Services were held Feb. 23, at the Pine Bluffs Baptist Church where Anderson was an active member for 24 years.
His life is characterized by his love of the Lord and his family. A quiet man by nature, he will be remembered for his depth of character, his wit and a ready sense of humor. Those left behind will miss him greatly, but rejoice in knowing he lives eternally with the Lord. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Bluffs Baptist Church, Box 537, Pine Bluffs, Wyo., 82082.
Louise A. Englert
April 1, 1929 ~ February 29, 2004
Louise A. Englert, 74 of Rangely died Feb. 29, 2004, at the Rangely District Hospital.
Louise Alma Wilfong was born April 1, 1929, in Hutchinson, Kan., the daughter of Elmer N. and Louise (Suttle) Wilfong. For many years, Mrs. Englert worked as a school secretary at Harrison High School and later Centennial Elementary School, both in Colorado Springs. Following her retirement, she worked for Walter Drake until fully retiring.
Mrs. Englert enjoyed spending time in her garden, bird watching and horses. In 2000 she moved to Rangely to be nearer family.
Survivors include two children, Michael (Roxana) Englert of Miller Creek; Patricia (George E.) Nye of Kalispell, Mont.; five grandchildren, Terrie Lynn Holloway of Mesa, Ariz.; Dana L. and Kelly L. Englert, both of Visalia, Calif.; Nathaniel (Liessa) Nye and Susan (Rick Styler) Nye, both of Kalispell; great-grandchildren Cody, Elizabeth, Destiny, Roger and Kevin Holloway, Gracie Englert, Melissa, Austin, Megan and Thomas Nye and one brother, Carl (Mae) Wilfong of Colorado Springs.
Her parents have preceded her in death.
Following her wishes, cremation was chosen and no services are planned. Friends may make memorial contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Elbert E. Mallett
July 26, 1911 ~ February 25, 2004
Elbert E. Mallett, 92, of Rangely died Feb. 25, 2004, at the Rangely District Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
Mallett was born July 26, 1911, in the Mesa Verde National Park, the son of Erskine Charles and Delphia (Murray) Mallett. On June 5, 1937, he was united in marriage to Winifred J. Neeley in Mancos.
Mallett survives in the family home.
For many years he owned and operated Mallett Motors in Mancos, later owning Mallett Chevrolet-Cadillac in Rifle. He also had sold cars for Berthoud Motors.
An avid outdoorsman, Mallett enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Through the years he had also tried his hand at uranium mining and raised silver fox and mink. He loved visiting and being with his friends.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Mr. Mallett is survived by four children, Gary (Marian) Mallett of Salinas, Calif.; Judy (Bill) Pickett of Rifle; Ray (Valerie) Mallett of Rangely; Jennifer (Leon) Wooley of Rifle; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one brother, Howard Mallett of Lakewood; one sister Esther 'Sis' Bell of Santa Fe, N.M., and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by one great grandson, Chance.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6 at the Rangely Assembly of God Church. Services will conclude at the church.

Mary Ellen (Lenderman) Walgren
February 26, 1916 ~ February 19, 2004
Longtime Rio Blanco County educator Mary
Ellen (Lenderman) Walgren, 87, died Feb. 19, 2004, at the Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark.
Mary Ellen Brown was born Feb. 26, 1916, in Southwest City, Mo., to Floyd A. and Gertie (Shain) Brown. She was united in marriage to Robert L. Lenderman who preceded her in death in 1970.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marie Trayler in 1997 and her son Thomas L. Lenderman in 1987.
Walgren was raised on Strawberry where she attended school. Following her graduation, she became a school teacher, teaching elementary school and art in Rangely for 21 years.
She was a member of the Methodist faith and the Rangely Chapter of E.S.A.
In recent years, ill health caused her to move nearer her granddaughter and she resided in Charleston, Ark. with her devoted friends and caregivers.
Survivors include one granddaughter, LaTrecia Trayler of Lavaca, Ark., three great grandsons David Slocum III of Azel, Texas; Jason Slocum and Andy Slocum both of Lavaca and her dear friends Tami Sweet and her children Kaelyn and Elise Earnhart.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 4 from Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Interment will be made in the Highland Cemetery.
Cochran Memorial Chapels has been entrusted with the arrangements.
William Victor Parker
May 10, 1931 - Feb. 17, 2004
Long-time Meeker resident, William Victor Parker, 71, passed away Feb. 17 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. He was born May 10, 1931.
Parker attended Rifle High School. He worked as a school bus driver, meat cutter and a rancher.
Parker married Kathleen Thomas July 19, 1953.
He served in the U.S. Army 1954 through 1956 and became a PFC in 1955.
After the military, Parker ranched with his wife’s family in Meeker.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, and the mountains.
Survivors are his children, Victor (Lanita) Parker and Jackie (David) Galinat; grandchildren, Jesse Burries, Becky Parker, Willard Parker, Shon Parker, Kimberly Brown, Michael Parker and Megan Parker; brothers, Doug Parker and David Parker; sister, Lynnora Carroll; caregiver, Rose Amick; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and son Evan.
Services were held Feb. 21 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bruce Eugene Wells
November 9, 1934 ~ February 10, 2004
Bruce Eugene Wells, 69, passed away at his home in Higdon, Ark., on Feb. 10, 2004.
Bruce (Sonny) Wells lived a rich and interesting life and formed lasting personal and business relationships throughout his childhood and adult life.
Bruce was born in Pampa, Texas, on Nov. 9, 1934, to parents Bruce and Ray (Swafford) Wells. He spent his childhood and formative years in Crane where he was active in Boy Scouts and played high school football for the Crane Golden Cranes.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Bruce answered the calling of the oil patch and began a long and rewarding career in the drilling and well servicing industry. During his career, Bruce worked in West Texas, the Texas Panhandle, Northwest Colorado, Arkansas and overseas in Iran.
Prior to retiring in 1996, Bruce owned and operated a successful well servicing company; B.E. Wells Service in Rangely.
Following retirement, he moved to central Arkansas where he lived nearby family and friends. In retirement, Bruce was an avid coin collector and he enjoyed fishing and attending social dances.
Bruce is survived by his four daughters Nakina Gray of Fairfield Bay, Ark., Darcy Allen of Dinosaur, Angie Innes of Midland, Texas and Melissa Ward also of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; his two sisters Norma Arnold of Odessa, Texas and Sherra Nell Titus of Longview, Texas; his 10 grandchildren Chris Wells, Nicole Bates, Farrah Edwards, Natalie Allen Bo Allen, Joshua Allen, Jason Innes, Jessica Innes, Cassie Bartley and Cory Ward; and six great-grandchildren. He will be missed by them all.
Mary Ellen (Lenderman) Walgren
Former long-time Rio Blanco County educator Mary Ellen (Lenderman) Walgren died Feb. 19 in Fort Smith, Ark. Funeral arrangements are pending with Cochran Memorial Chapels.
Donald Carroll
July 16, 1939 ~ January 31, 2004
Longtime Meeker resident and businessman Don Carroll, 64, died Jan. 31, 2004, in Grand Junction.
Donald Charles Carroll was born in Oxford, Neb. on July 16, 1939. He was the son of Jerome Joseph and Elsie Beth Carroll. After moving to Colorado, Don attended Miller Creek School until they moved to town. He then attended Meeker schools until he was graduated in 1957. He played sports, including basketball, football and track.
In 1961, Don received an honorable discharge after three years of service to his county in the United States Army. He then went to college but due to his father’s illness, he returned to Meeker to run the family propane business.
Don was united in marriage to Janet Louise Like on July 5, 1964. Jan brought into this union two daughters; Sharon Leann and Barbara Jean.
This family moved to Fort Collins where Don was employed by Woodward Governor as a machinist for four years. Three more children were born into this union; Christopher Charles, Catherine Francis, Shalene Renae. In 1971, the family returned to Meeker, where he worked as a plumber for Ruckman Plumbing and Heating. In 1983 he purchased this business, changing the name to Carroll Plumbing and Heating. In 1999 he sold the business to his son, Chris.
Don was a fireman for the Meeker Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years. He also helped organize the Fireman’s Ball banquet for many years.
Don enjoyed the outdoors. Among his interests were hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling and horseshoes and above all else being with his large family and many friends. After retiring, Don and Jan sold their home and bought a fifth-wheel trailer, which they traveled in until his death.
Don was preceded in death by his brother Edward Joseph, father, Jerome J., mother Elsie Beth, and grandson Daniel Ryan Dade. He is survived by his wife Janet of Meeker, his children, Sherri (John) Purkey, Barbie (Jay) Purkey, Chris (Lynn) Carroll, Cathy (Ricky) Dade, Shay (Richard) Bain, all of Meeker; 19 grandchildren, Shannon Marie and Robin Thomas Purkey, Cameron Carl and Travis Reid Stout, Jason Paul and Ashley Kay Purkey, Toni Lynn, Justin Charles, Brett Aaron and Natalie Wrae Carroll, Gabriel Wade (Stephanie) Dade, Brandyn Lee (Adam) Dawner, Rachel Ivy, Daskin Samuel, Darion Jacob and Shovonah Rae Dade, Amanda Renae, Jenifer Nicole and Christina Louise Bain. He is also survived by three sisters, Leanna Carroll of Denver, Patricia (Ed) Schuch of Marlow, Oklahoma, Margaret Ann (Phil) Jackson of Westminster and a sister-in-law, Mary Carroll of Fort Collins as well as many other family members.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6 from Holy Family Catholic Church with The Reverend Father Roger Lascelle, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Highland Cemetery
of Meeker. Visitation will be at Cochran Memorial Chapel until 8 p.m. Thursday.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Don Carroll Memorial Fund through Cochran Memorial Chapel which has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
