Wesley Edward Slaugh
July 21, 1917 ~ October 15, 2003
Wesley Edward Slaugh, 86, of Manila, Utah, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003. Wesley was born on July 21, 1917, in Vernal, Utah, to Curtis Edward and Chloe Roberts Slaugh. He married Buliah Marie Burton on Oct. 12, 1942, in Green River, Wyo. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Wesley was a sheepherder, rancher and logger. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as 1st and 2nd counselor in the Bishopric of McKinnon Ward. He was also a veteran of the US Army. Wesley enjoyed playing the harmonica. He loved doing things in the outdoors with his five sons, 29 grandkids and 30 great-grandkids.
Wesley is survived by his wife of 61 years, Buliah of Manila, Utah; sons, Kenneth Slaugh of Manila, Utah; Clyde (Carol) Slaugh of McKinnon, Wyo.; Jesse (Fran) Slaugh of Dutch John, Utah; Allen (Kathy) Slaugh of Meeker; brother, Myron (Wanda) Slaugh of Vernal, Utah; sisters, Relva Potter of Lyman, Wyo.; Virgie Peterson of Evanston, Wyo.; Sybil (Leon) Brady of Green River, Wyo.; Arva (Leo) Slagowski of Vernal, Utah; 29 grandkids and 30 great-grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Chloe Slaugh; brother, Marvin Slaugh; son, Calvin Slaugh; granddaughters, Joyce and Delora Slaugh; great-grandson, Austin Thomas.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the Manila Ward LDS Chapel at 11 a.m. under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. Burial was in the Manila Cemetery.
Dixie Zimmerman (Purcell)
1933 ~ 2003
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Mesquite, Nev., for Dixie Zimmerman (Purcell). She passed away Sept. 28, 2003, at Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George, Utah.
Zimmerman was born in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1933 to Oka and Richard Purcell. Shortly after, her family moved to Meeker. In 1949, she married Reed Murr. To this union were born a son Lance and a daughter Sherry. They owned a ranch in the Little Beaver area for several years.
After Reed’s death, Dixie moved to Denver. Later, Dixie met and married Carl Zimmerman. They remained in Denver until she and Carl retired and then moved to St. George, Utah and then later to Mesquite, Nev. She was employed at the Oasis Casino at the time of her death.
Zimmerman was proceeded in death by her parents, Oka and Richard Purcell and grandson Jason. She is survived by her husband Carl, sister Patsy Porter and Bill Taylor of Mesquite, Nev., and two brothers Jimmy and Shirly Purcell, Meeker and Jerry and Linda Purcell also of Meeker. Four children Lance and Sherry Murr, Tim and Karen Zimmerman all of Denver and Terri and Mike Hammer of Aurora. Seven grandchildren and one great grandson including numerous nieces and nephews.
Those attending the services were Kelly and Stanley Crawford, Rick, Kim and Caleb Dodds and Jimmy and Shirly Purcell, all of Meeker, son Lance and granddaughter Torrie Murr, Tim and Karen Zimmerman of Denver and Terri and Mike Hammer of Aurora.
Ralph Trenton Day
October 27, 1926 ~ April 7, 2004
Trenton Day, 77, of Rangely passed away on April 7 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Day was the fourth of seven children born to Etta (Cobb) and Leonard Day in Satanta, Kan.
He married Helen Irene (Smuck) Buss on Dec. 31, 1957.
During the Korean War he served in the 29th Infantry Regiment in Okinawa.
Day worked in natural gas production and owned his own contracting business before retiring in Rangely.
Survivors include sisters: Dorothy 'Dot' (Day) DeBock of Quinlin, Okla., and Marjorie 'Peg' (Day) Patrick of Pratt, Kan. Children: Lenor (Buss/Day) and husband Steve Wisniewski of Dolores, Colo., Ron (Buss) Day of Fort Collins, David 'Nelson' Day of Rangely, Holly (Day) Talbott of Fort Collins and Phoebe (Day) and husband Wes Smith of Okinawa, Japan; grandchildren: Mat Day, Heather Talbott and Kyle Talbott all of Fort Collins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Etta and Leonord Day; brothers Gene and Jack Day; sisters’ Leota (Day) Devins and Loretta (Day) Lange and grandson Nathaniel Day.
A memorial service was held April 10 at the First Baptist Church in Satanta, Kan. The Reverend Ray Tweed officiated.
A graveside service followed at Dudley Township Cemetery.

Nancy (Hume) Clark
1928 ~ 2004
Nancy (Hume) Clark, 76, a former Meeker resident, passed away Feb. 18 at the home of one of her daughters in St. Louis.
She was the daughter of Supt. Of Schools and Mrs. Ray Hume. Supt. Hume was school administrator in the 1930s. Nancy Clark is survived by her two daughters and several grandchildren.
Donald H. Hossack
January 27, 1940 ~ April 2, 2004
Donald H. Hossack, 64, of Paxton, Fla., died April 2, 2004.
Donald Hamilton Hossack was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Meeker, the son of Donald and Mary (Hamilton) Hossack. He attended Meeker schools and was graduated with the class of 1958.
Following his graduation, he attended Colorado State University, graduating with a degree in education. On April 3, 1965, he was united in marriage to Sandra Lee MacCarter in Golden. Mrs. Hossack survives in the family home.
For 39 years, Donald taught schools, retiring from teaching in 2002 in Paxton, Fla.
He was a member of the Methodist faith and also a Mason. He loved his teaching profession but also enjoyed working on his 40 acre ranch, raising hay and cattle.
In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Brett of Paxton, his mother, Mary Hossack and one brother Erroll Hossack, both of Meeker.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. this morning, April 15 from the Meeker United Methodist Church with Randall Cochran officiating.
Inurnment will follow in the Highland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Donald Hossack Scholarship Fund in care of Regions Bank, P.O. Box 453, Paxton, Fla., 32528.
Memorial services for Meeker native Donald Hamilton Hossack will be held Thursday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the Meeker United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow in the family plot at Highland Cemetery.
Donald was the son of Donald and Mary (Hamilton) Hossack.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy, one son, Brett, his mother, Mary Hossack of Meeker, and one brother, Erroll of Meeker. He passed away in Paxton, Fla., on April 2.
Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the local arrangements.
Virginia Duff
June 29, 1917 ~ April 4, 2004
Virginia Duff, 86, of Meeker, died April 4, 2004, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
Virginia Whalin was born June 29, 1917, on Wilson Creek in Moffat County, the daughter of Walter and Inez (Ely) Whalin. The large Whalin family were well known in the area and upon her graduation as salutatorian from Rio Blanco County High School, Virginia set out on a life filled with travel and adventure. She had a keen mind and love of music and reading. The last several years she has resided in the Walbridge Memorial Wing.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Console of Meeker, Doris (Clyde) Console of Deming, N.M., one brother Bill (Lynn) Whalin of Denver as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Her two children, Gregory and Theresa Frizzell, parents, two sisters, Ethelyn Crawford and Jean Lindsey and two brothers, George and Wilbur have preceded her in death.
Memorial services in Meeker will be held at a later date. Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Joseph J. McPhail
May 27, 1924 ~ March 30, 2004
Longtime Rangely carpenter and businessman Joseph J. McPhail, 79, died March 30, 2004, at his rural Rangely home.
Joseph James McPhail was born May 27, 1924, in Sublette, Kan., the son of Charles Augusta and Katie (Base) McPhail. At age 19, Joe met and married Pauline Skinner on July 24, 1943, in Pratt, Kan. Joe began his home building career in Ashland, Kansas and in October of 1956 they moved to Rangely where Mr. McPhail worked as a building contractor. Throughout the years he built more than 50 homes in Rangely and was extremely proud of having built the Rangely Christian Church of which he was a member.
A devoted family man, Mr. McPhail enjoyed spending time outside, fishing, hunting and riding his snowmobile.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 61 years, Pauline, of the family home, four children, Jody (Mike) Maxson of Craig; Jim 'Mose' (Joyce) McPhail of Meeker; Tony (Vicki) McPhail of Rangely; Traci (Dale) Files of Gypsum; nine grandchildren, Joe, Aaron, C.J., John, Amberlee, Jason, Dustin, Crystal and Ryan; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Ellen) McPhail of Ashland, Kan., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, two sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Rangely Christian Church. Grandsons C.J. McPhail and John McPhail will officiate at the services.
Cochran Memorial Chapel of Rangely has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Francis G. Washburn
December 15, 1919 ~ March 26, 2004
Francis G. Washburn, (Ted), 84, of 50 South St., Williamsburg, Mass., died March 26, 2004, in the presence of his loving family at Calvin Coolidge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Northampton, Mass.
Born Dec. 15, 1919, in Racine, Wis., he was the son of the late David Curtis Washburn and Mary Magdeline (Schlosser) Washburn.
He grew up in Racine, Wis., where he attended Washington Park High School He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison but entered military service in 1943 by joining the Army Air Cops as a pilot. He married Marion E. Peterson also of Racine on Dec. 26, 1942. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., in 1954 and a Divinity Degree from Seabury-Western Seminary, Evenston, Ill., in 1956. He was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1956, and began serving as the minister of St. James Episcopal Church, Macon, Mo., in 1956. He served at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Church of The Ascension in St. Louis, Mo., from 1959 to 1965.
In addition, he was the chairman of the Department of Christian Education from 1960-1962, served in the Department of Missions from 1963-1965, the Strategy and Planning Commission from 1963-1965, and the Standing Committee in 1965, all within the Diocese of Missouri in St. Louis.
From 1965 to 1968, he was the co-coordinator for a pilot diocesan program in Houston, Texas, and from 1968 to 1979 he served in the executive office of the Diocese in Cleveland, Ohio. From 1979 to 1982, he served the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre, Penn.. He retired in 1982, and moved to Albuquerque, N.M. In 1992, he and Marion moved to Williamsburg, Mass.
He was predeceased by is brothers Charles H. Washburn and Curtis Washburn and his sisters Ella Poulsen and Louis Poulsen. He is survived by his wife, Marion E. Washburn of Williamsburg, Mass. two sons, Timothy F. Washburn and his wife, Julia of Leeds, Mass., Michael P. Washburn and his wife, Mary of Meeker and daughter Elizabeth A. Mandelkow and her husband, Roger of Buhl, Idaho, and six grandchildren: Adam Washburn of Northampton, Abigail Washburn of Hapden, Conn., Anna Washburn of Killington, Vt., Christopher Washburn of Castlerock, Colo., John Washburn of Grand Junction, Colo. and Sarah Washburn of Meeker. Also, three step-grandchildren Janna and Julie Mandelkow of Boise, Idaho, and Mike Mandelkow of Sacramento, Calif.
A memorial service was held April 3 at John’s Episcopal Church in Northampton, Mass. His ashes were interred in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Racine, Wis. There were no calling hours.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. John’s Episcopal. The Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton is handling arrangements.
James C. Bard
March 15, 1928 ~ March 16, 2004
James C. Bard passed away peacefully in his home March 16, 2004. He was born in Chicago, Ill., March 15, 1928. He was graduated from Culver Military Academy, proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp., before graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in business. In Chicago he worked for Brown Bros. & Harriman as an investment advisor, started the bond division at Nuveen Corporation and worked directly under Clement Stone as the chief investment analyst for Combined Insurance and served on the board of Henroten Hospital before moving to Arizona.
He added three 'holes in one' to his extensive golfing resume before his passion turned to fly-fishing.
On the last leg of an extended fishing trip through Canada, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado he drove into Meeker in the fall of 1996. Captured by the beauty and serenity of the White River Valley he bought a home that same week, moved in and never left. He loved solitude, nature, fly-fishing and reading western history, Louis L’Amour and especially the American philosophers Emerson and Thoreau. He loved the west.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite Hussey Bard and is survived by his children Julie Bard Wyckoff of Aspen, Janet Bard Selbe of Steamboat Springs, Steven Hussey Bard of Nashville, Tenn., and four loving grandchildren; Rose Wyckoff, Laurel Selbe, Christopher Wyckoff, Kate Selbe Jackson and her husband Levi, his sister Kay Bard Gundlach. He is also survived by his faithful Border Collie, Champ.
As per his request no funeral services will be held. The family asks in lieu of flowers and condolences, donations be made to Pioneers Hospital Home Health Agency, 345 Cleveland, Meeker, Colo., 81641

Rebecca M. 'Becke' Harp
July 3, 1940 ~ March 20, 2004
Lifelong Meeker resident Rebecca M. 'Becke' Harp, 63, died March 20, 2004, at the home of her daughter on Orchard Mesa.
Rebecca Mae Slack was born July 3, 1940, in Meeker, the daughter of Walter V. and Lois (Rantschler) Slack. She attended Meeker public schools and was graduated with the class of 1958.
On July 13, 1958, she was united in marriage to Bern Hampton 'Ike' Harp at St. James’ Church in Meeker. Ike preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1993. One brother, 'Junior', her parents and one nephew, Beau Beall, also precede her in death.
Becke was a tireless and devoted supporter of her family, staying at home to raise her two children. She later worked as the librarian and secretary at Meeker Junior High. Becke also worked for the Town of Meeker, retiring in 2002. A member of St. James’ Church, she loved to read.
Survivors include her two children, Dirk Harp and his wife Lisa of Valley Springs, Calif.; Shona Green and her husband Joe of Grand Junction; three grandchildren, Nathan, Natalie and Nicole Harp; one brother, Owen Slack and his wife Jeannie of Pinedale, Wyo.; four sisters, Eileen Hampton of Grand Junction; Mary Dawn Carstens and her husband Jim of Palisade; Lois Rae Beall and her husband Joe of Houston, Texas; Cindy Susoreny and her husband Allan of Tempe, Ariz., numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 24 from St. James’ Episcopal Church in Meeker. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Friends may make memorial contributions to St. James’ Church or Hospice Palliative Care of the Grand Valley through Cochran Memorial Chapel which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Steven L. Peel
July 31, 1958 ~ March 20, 2004
Steven L. Peel, 45, of Bakersfield, Calif., died March 20, 2004, as a result of an auto accident.
Steve was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 31, 1958, to W. Grant and Sybil Peel. He was raised in Rangely where he enjoyed playing sports, fishing and his favorite pastime, deer hunting.
Steve married Ann Rooks on June 20, 1980, at the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his marriage to Ann, they moved to Laramie, Wyo., where Steve completed his education at the University of Wyoming, receiving a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering. They later moved to Casper, Wyo., Fillmore, Calif., and finally Bakersfield. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently served in the Bishopric of the Olive Knowles Ward. He served a two-year mission to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the owner and operator of Hard Rock Construction and Engineering, formerly Asphalt Sealing & Paving (ASAP).
Steve and Ann are parents of three beautiful and talented daughters, Haley and her husband, Cody Bennett, Jayde and Paige Peel and one grandson, Brogan Bennett. Besides his immediate family, Steve is also survived by his mother, Sybil Peel of Mt. Pleasant, Utah; sisters, Diane Fox and husband, Ron; Maria Rae and husband, Jerry of Mt. Pleasant, Utah; Janice Hutchinson and husband, Boyd of Brigham City, Utah; Valerie Arvig and husband, Alan of St. George, Utah; as well as his father and mother-in-law, Don and Florence Rooks of Rangely and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, Grant Sr. and brothers, Grant Jr. and Matson Peel.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Rangely Cemetery. Additional funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bakersfield.
The family requests donations be made to the Peel Family Education Fund c/o Cochran Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 351 in Rangely which has been entrusted with the local arrangements.
Yvonne True LeBleu
September 14, 1910-March 17, 2004
Funeral services were held for Yvonne True LeBleu on March 20, 2004, at the First Christian Church in Chickasha, Okla., Reverend Kim Hayes and Reverend Don Gibson officiating the service.
Yvonne True LeBleu was born the daughter of Lewis Edward Royse and Hattie Mae Walters Royse on Sept. 14, 1910, in El Reno, Okla. She passed away on March 17, 2004, in Chickasha at the age of 93.
Yvonne was a graduate of El Reno high school 1929. She married Melvin LeBleu in 1934 and to this union six children were born.
They lived El Reno area until 1946, when they moved to the Meridian farming community, northwest of Chickasha.
After her husband’s death in 1956, she remained on the farm until her children were graduated from high school, then she moved into Chickasha in 1965.
She worked at the Palace Drug Store, the Big Burger Drive-in, the Gazebo, Liberty Drug and Roe’s Cafe. Yvonne dearly loved to be around people and was always ready to go and enjoy the days events.
She was a member of the First Christian Church. Yvonne was also a member of the Meridian Home Demonstration Club and the Chickasha Round-Up Club. She loved to play her organ and enjoyed all types of music.
For the past five and a half years, she resided at the Christian Care Retirement Village.
Yvonne was preceded in the death by her parents, one sister, Thelma Atkinson in 1997, her husband, in 1956, and one son, Paul and wife, Geneva Watkins LeBleu in 1961.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Joretta and Howard Paige of Blanchard, Okla., son Jerry LeBleu Sr. of Rangely, son Royse LeBleu of Chickasha, Okla., daughter and son-in-law Pat and David Harmon of Chickasha, Okla., son and daughter-in-law Bobby and Lonnie LeBleu of Rangely, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Interment was at the Fairlawn Cemetery
in Chickasha, Okla.
Jessie Gordon
August 25, 1911 ~ March 1, 2004
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jessie Gordon was held Saturday, March 13 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Rangely. Mrs. Gordon died March 1, 2004, at the Rangely District Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
Jessie Jewell Gordon was born in Lehigh, Okla. on Aug. 25, 1911, to Sam and Mary (White) Osborn. She was their fifth child but she and her older brother, Roger, were the only two to live past infancy. Her mother died in childbirth when she was three, and she was sent to live with her maternal grandmother, who died when she was six. Her father then moved to Trinidad with the two children, and later to the Grand Junction area. When she was ten her father sent her to live with a succession of families to clean house and look after their children.
She was a nurse’s aide at Colorado General Hospital in Denver when she met and married Gerald A. Gordon, who had just returned from a Navy enlistment. They moved with their daughter, Beatrice, to Omaha, Neb., where their sons Daniel and Gerald W. were born. Unable to find work during the depression, Gerald re-enlisted in the Navy and they moved to California, returning to Denver in 1938. She had made her home there until moving to Rangely with her son Dan in 1999. She entered Rangely Long Term Care in October of 2001.
Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, son Gerald, daughter and son-in-law Beatrice and Orville Wallace, and granddaughter Diane Dawson.
She is survived by her son Daniel (Ronda) Gordon, grandchildren Donna (Robert) Espinosa of Littleton; Linda Gordon of Rangely; Patricia Gordon of Englewood; grandson-in-law Scott Dawson of Granite Bay, Calif.; Kathy (Dan) Ritchlin of Deming, N.M.; Terry (LeRoy) Lacker of Alvarado, Texas; Steve (Emily) Wallace of Deming, N.M.; Mike (Carol) Gordon of Bailey; and Mark (Gayle) Gordon of Loveland; 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great great-grandchildren.
Cochran Memorial Chapel of Rangely was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
James M. Talmadge
October 24, 1931 ~ March 13, 2004
James Marquis Talmadge, 72, passed away in Fruita, Colo., March 13, 2004, after complications from a stroke.
Talmadge, affectionately referred to as 'big Jim,' was born in Salt Lake City, Utah Oct. 24, 1931, to James Daly Biggane and Dorothy May Talmadge. He was legally adopted by his grandparents, Reuben Walter Talmadge and Annie May Harris.
Talmadge was graduated from Kemmerer High School in Kemmerer, Wyo. On Dec. 12, 1951, he married (Nettie) Laurine Campbell of Vernal, Utah, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. They had three children and were married for 22 years. Their first home was in Rangely where he worked in the oil fields. Soon they started a successful fast-food hamburger business called the Dairy King.
Other occupation Talmadge held were designing and building homes, uranium mining in Moab, Utah, and owning an emissions business. He was self-taught and was a master of many skills.
Talmadge’s hobbies included reading, yard work, watching educational program, gold panning and rides to the country. He consistently helped those in need. One of the main joys in his life was drinking a nice ice-cold Coke or Pepsi.
He is survived by a son Walter (Susan) Talmadge of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Terri (Kenneth) Boettcher and Deborah Talmadge both of Fruita, Colo.; a sister, Carol Ann Deno of Kemmerer, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren, Cory, Jaime, Lori-ann, Brian, Heather, Marquis, Matthew, Hillary, Michael and Mitchell, and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held March 17 at the McLean Funeral Home in Fruita. Services will be held today, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in New Elmwood Cemetery, Fruita.
The family wishes to thank the loving staff of Family Health West who made the last 16 months of his life comfortable and meaningful.
