Archie M. Carter
December 24, 1913 ~ December 16, 2003

Archie M. Carter. 89, of Rancho Cucumonga, Calif., passed away Dec. 16 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Osyka, Miss., Dec. 24, 1913, he was a long-time resident of Meeker. He also resided earlier in Dallas and Covina, Calif., where he owned Carter Sanitation Company.
He took great pride in his family and was an avid hunter and fisherman with a great love for the Colorado mountains. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine older brothers and sisters and son Hearl Carter.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn Mearl Carter, daughter of Sue Lassalette (Mike) of Temecula, Calif., sons Archie D. Carter (Faye) of San Dimas, Calif., and Earl (Cherie) of Glendora, Calif., eight grandchildren, Sue, John and Tom Lassalette, Jill, Mark, Kristin, Jamie and Josh Carter. He also leaves eight great-grandchildren, Jake and Jess Wade, Camile and Ava Lassalette, Dakota, Lauren, Ethan and Paige Carter and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Friday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. at Oakdale Memorial Park, Glendora, Calif. Directing was Oakdale Mortuary.

Gary W. Reeves
August 31, 1951 ~ December 7, 2003

Gary W. Reeves, 52, of Grand Junction passed away Dec. 7, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.
Memorial services will be at Martin Mortuary, Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Roger Ferguson officiating.
Gary was born Aug. 31, 1951, at Rushville, Neb. He was raised by Charles and Lella I. (Kuskie) Kuchera. He spent his childhood in Arizona and was graduated from high school at Rushville, Neb.
Gary was a mining electrician in Meeker for 18 years. Prior to that he was a mining electrician in the copper mines in Arizona. Gary moved to Grand Junction three years ago.
Gary was an avid golfer and he enjoyed yard sales and fishing. He particularly admired the services provided by St. Jude Children’s Hospital. He always looked forward to spending time with April’s 4-year-old son Anjel.
Gary’s long time companion, Darlene Massey, her children, Sonja Cook, April Massey and April’s son, Anjel survive him and will miss him greatly. His parents, one brother and sisters preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions in Gary’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Colleen E. Holland
February 8, 1926 ~ December 3, 2003

Long-time Meeker resident Colleen E. Holland, 77, died Dec. 3, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker.
Colleen E. Harp was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Rifle, the daughter of Russell and Myrtle (Porter) Harp. As an infant, the family moved to Meeker, operating Harp Transportation. Colleen attended Meeker Public Schools and following her graduation from Rio Blanco County High School attended University of Colorado in Boulder for one year, rooming with Mary Villa.
On June 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to Bernard A. Holland in Meeker. Mr. Holland preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1998. She was also preceded in death by two infant sons and her parents.
For many years, Mrs. Holland was the school secretary at the high school, retiring in February of 1988. While working for the schools she served on many school committees and had a deep love and appreciation for her students. She was a devoted and loving mother and homemaker and enjoyed woodworking, painting and drawing, playing the accordion and spending time outdoors, working in her flower beds and garden, arrowhead hunting, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Her family will long remember her ability to 'swing a mean wooden spoon.'
Survivors include her three daughters, Margaret Adams and her husband Bill 'Medic'; and Holly Schopp, both of Meeker, Christi Slade of Grand Junction, six grandchildren, Heidi Adams-Woroniecki and her husband John of Hebron, N.D.; Christopher Adams and his wife Janalee of Craig; Ryan Schopp of Grand Junction; B.J. Slade of Fort Collins and Karey Thomas and her husband Rex of Oklahoma City, Okla. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Garret Russell, Peyton Christopher and Ethan Joseph.
Funeral Services were held Dec. 6 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Private family interment services will be in the Highland Cemetery.
Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Joseph Williams
May 21, 1995 ~ November 24, 2003

Joseph Williams, 8, of Wellington, Colo., died Nov. 24, 2003, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.
Joseph David Williams was born May 21, 1995, in Fort Collins, the son of Scott and Carrieann (Thomas) Williams. At the time of his death he was a third grader at Eyestone Elementary School in Wellington. He loved being outdoors and was a natural fisherman. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Fort Collins and the Big Thompson Bow Hunter’s Association.
Survivors include his parents, Scott and Carrieann, his brother, Matthew, his sister, Brittany, all of the family home in Wellington, his paternal grandparents, Ted and Mary Ann Williams of Meeker, his paternal grandparents Julie and Bruce Suter of Corvallis, Oregon, and David and Helen Thomas of Deary, Idaho as well as his great-grandmother, Doris Pool of Mesa, Ariz. Joseph is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as friends at school and throughout the United States who were all saddened by his sudden death.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Fort Collins on Wednesday, Nov. 26. A funeral service was held Friday at the Fairfield Community Center in Meeker with interment following in the Highland Cemetery.
Friends may make memorial contributions to the Big Thompson Bowhunter Assoc. through Cochran Memorial Chapels which was entrusted with the arrangements.

Pia Bjerregaard
April 11, 1945 ~ November, 23, 2003

Well-known Meeker resident Pia Bjerregaard, 58, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Pia was born April 11, 1945, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of August and Eva Susanna (Linder Madsen) Bjerregaard. As a young girl her love for animals blossomed as she began riding lessons in Copenhagen.
Her family moved to Fredrikssund and she received her first horse. She began traveling to riding schools in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Between the ages of 14 and 19 she trained with the European National Equestrian Olympic Team where she furthered her love of animals that she carried with her throughout her life. At the age of 19 she had the opportunity to travel to Meeker at the invitation of Soren Nielsen. She visited the Nielsen ranch up the river and fell in love with ranch life. Following her March 7, 1967, wedding in Denmark to Grant Nielsen, she returned to her new American home.
Pia’s passion then turned to her three children as she dedicated herself to their various activities. She led 4-H horse, dog and sheep programs for several years while attending to her own horse business where she bred and raised Arabians and Quarter horses. On the side, Pia enjoyed teaching riding lessons. Even as busy as her life had become, she still found the time to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of Colorado’s sunsets and scenery.
Pia also started an antique store featuring European antiques. Starting in 1987, Pia worked off and on at both Pioneers Hospital and the Meeker Family Health Center. She was devoted to her work and her family, spending countless hours with her grandchildren and children. She loved the outdoors and trips to the mountains. She also enjoyed raising goats, cows, horses and her border collies.
Survivors include three children, Ann Marie Nielsen and her fiancée Gene Scritchfield, Alan Nielsen and his wife Becca, Kent Nielsen and his wife Marci all of Meeker, six grandchildren, Mason, Tristan, Daylon, Derek, Denee and Kaysyn and two brothers, Hans and Frank, both of Denmark.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Fairfield Community Center. Interment was made at the Nielsen Ranch on the Mesa.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Pia Bjerregaard Memorial Fund at any First National Bank of the Rockies. Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Patrick J. Dungan
November 9, 1975 ~ November 25, 2003

Patrick J. Dungan, 26, of Grand Junction, formerly of Meeker died Nov. 25, 2003, in Grand Junction.
Patrick Joshua Dungan was born Nov. 9, 1975, in Farmington, N.M., and as a young child moved to Meeker where he attended Meeker Public Schools.
He was an avid outdoors man and sportsman who enjoyed hiking, swimming, skiing, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed the special time he spent with his family.
Patrick is survived by his mother, Janell (Johnson) Dungan of Denver, his father and step-mother Joe and Kim Dungan of Meeker, one sister, Tonya Carter and her husband Scott of Denver, one brother, Sean Dungan and his wife Tina of Roanoke, Texas; a step-brother, Jeremy Muxlow of Meeker, his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Jewell Dungan of Fort Worth, Texas, his maternal grandmother, Laura Kinnamon and her husband Sam of Meeker, a niece, Cicily, two aunts, Donna Tucker and her husband Clarence and their two children of Arlington, Texas; Kathleen French and her husband Gaylord and their two children of Waxahachie, Texas; and two uncles, Charles Johnson and his wife Mary and their child of Iowa and Fred Johnson and his wife Mi of Rifle.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker with Pastor
Bud Miles officiating. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Patrick J. Dungan Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies.

Robert (Bob) Sullivan
June 1, 1916 ~ November 28, 2003

Robert (Bob) Sullivan, 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Nov. 28, 2003, at the Valley Manor nursing home in Montrose. Sullivan was born in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., on June 1, 1916.
Sullivan and his family farmed in eastern Colorado. Life was a struggle in those days and he had to leave high school to help support his family by serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp.
He worked from 1934 to 1936 in the CCC working in such places as Woody Creek near Aspen. He returned to Cheyenne Wells where he was graduated from high school in 1937.
On Dec. 23, 1939, Sullivan married Viola Hicks, in Goodland, Kan. In 1943, Bob, Viola and their two children, Marilyn and Robert, moved to Meeker and soon after Bob enlisted in the Navy.
He returned from the war in 1945 and worked in the oilfields in Wilson Creek, near Meeker and Worland, Wyo. In 1947, Sullivan and his family moved to Rangely where he worked for Chevron Oil.
A third child, Russ, was born in 1948.
Sullivan retired in 1976 as a production foreman. In Rangely he was a faithful and active member of the Christian church and served many years as elder.
Upon retirement Bob and Viola moved to Montrose and joined the Montrose Christian Church.
Sullivan was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sadie Sullivan, his sisters, Tressa and Mabel, and his beloved wife, Viola, and daughter, Marilyn.
Surviving family members are sons Robert and wife, Joyce, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Russ and wife, Sheila, of Montrose, his brother Joe of Meeker, his grandchildren Bruce Parish of Baltimore, Md., Dan Parrish of Denver, Stacey McKeithan, Alex Sullivan, Jennifer Sullivan all of Fort Mill and Matthew Sullivan of Seattle, Wash., and two great-grandchildren Emily McKeithan and Georgia Sullivan.
The funeral was held Dec. 3 at the Montrose Christian Church.

Timothy R. Welle
August 9, 1975 ~ November 21, 2003

Timothy R. Welle, 28, of Chalmette, La., formerly of Meeker, died Nov. 21, 2003, in Chalmette.
Welle was born Aug. 9, 1975, in Meeker, the son of Dick and Cindy (Goedert) Welle. He was raised in Meeker and was graduated from Meeker High School with the class of 1993. While in high school he wrestled for two years. Shortly after his graduation, Welle enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country for four years, in Hawaii, Asia and in the Persian Gulf following the collapse there.
After his discharge, he worked for Arrowhead in Lamar, doing line construction, then for The Peterson Company in electrical sales in Denver before becoming a partner in Applied Power Services. After Welle 'retired' from APS, he moved around and did odd jobs until September of this year when he went to work offshore in Louisiana for Superior Energy.
Welle was an adventurous person who had a sense of humor that was unequalled. He loved to spend time outdoors hunting, fishing and boating. It never mattered to Welle what he was doing as long as he was going fast. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his parents, one brother Jake and his wife Abby, his paternal grandmother, Doris Welle and his maternal grandparents Joe and Frances Goedert, all of Meeker. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Connie and Tom Edwards of Gardner, Kan., Wendy and Greg Garrett, Billy and Tasha Goedert, Terry and Dee Ann Goedert, all of Meeker; Tom and Shona Welle of Westminster and Bill and Ruth Welle of Englewood. Numerous cousins and a host of friends, fellow military servicemen and electrical line workers throughout the world also survive him.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Fairfield Community Center in Meeker. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Timothy R. Welle Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies. Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Joseph David Williams

Joseph David Williams, 8, of Wellington, Colo., died Nov. 24 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo. He was born May 21, 1995, in Fort Collins and at the time of his death was a third grader at Eyestone Elementary School in Wellington.
He is survived by his parents Scott and Carrieann Thomas Williams, a sister Brittany, a brother Matthew, grandparents Ted and Mary Ann Williams of Meeker, Julie and Bruce Suter of Corvallis, Ore., and David and Helen Thomas of Deary, Idaho and great-grandmother Doris Pool of Mesa, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from Cochran Memorial Chapel with interment to following in Highland Cemetery.
Additional funeral services were held Wednesday in Fort Collins.

Pia Bjerregaard

Funeral services for well-known Meeker resident Pia Bjerregaard will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Fairfield Community Center. Private family interment services will follow. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Pia Bjerregaard Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies.
A native of Denmark, Bjerregaard was a patient care technician at Pioneers Hospital. She is survived by her three children, Ann Marie Nielsen and her fiancee Gene Scritchfield, Alan Nielsen and his wife Becca, Kent Nielsen and his wife Marci, all of Meeker, six grandchildren, Mason, Tristan, Daylon, Derek, Denee and Kaysyn and two brothers, Hans and Frank, both of Denmark.

Elry Kincher
December 30, 1917 ~ November 9, 2003

Elry Kincher passed away on Nov. 9, 2003, at Pioneers Hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1917, to Arthur and Alice Kincher, Elry grew up and attended school in Meeker. He worked for several different ranchers around Meeker in the summers.
He enlisted in the Army in 1942. He received his basic training in the states and then was stationed in England for three years. He was an airplane mechanic. He returned to Meeker after the war was over and went back to ranching with his father. Later he was in partnership with his brother Edward operating the family ranch. In 1960 he bought Edward out and was on his own.
In 1946 he married Betty Warren. To this union were born four children: Lois, Allen, Russell and Fay.
Kincher did all his own repairs on the machinery and the buildings. He understood the cattle business and raised exceptionally good quality cattle. He never had a hired hand; his wife and children helped him with the haying. He leased Margaret Isaac’s ranch next to the Kincher place for 29 years. He sold the Kincher ranch in 1979. They saved some acreage from the ranch and Kincher and his two sons built a new home there. This has been their home for 23 years. Kincher was a quiet person and had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Betty; a daughter Lois (Ben) Williams of Torrington, Wyoming; sons Russell (Becky) Kincher of Fort Collins and Fay (Stacie) Kincher of Meeker; sister Lorraine Findlay of Meeker; four grandchildren, Laurie (Shad) Jackson of Vernal, Utah; Lance (Colette) Sizemore of Helena, Montana; Brian Kincher and Jeniffer Kincher; a great granddaughter, Britni Rich and a great grandson, Dace Rich.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Allen, a sister Edith Humble and one brother Edward.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 12 from Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Interment with military honors followed in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Pioneers Hospital Memorial Fund.
Cochran Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

Margaret M. Rassi Romersberger
December 6, 1913 ~ November 4, 2003

Margaret M. Rassi Romersberger, 89, of Morton, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 4 , 2003. She was born Dec. 6, 1913. She was married to Orville Romersberger on Jan. 26, 1974, in Grand Junction. They made their home in Meeker until his death in November of 1994, after which she returned to Morton. She will long be remembered for her generous hospitality and love of playing bridge.
Surviving are two stepsons, Gary (and Linda) Romersberger of Grand Junction, David (and Carol) Romersberger of Palmyra, Mo., two stepdaughters, Kay (and Larry) Bowen of Texas, Susie (and Les) Sprod of Meeker; Four brothers and three sisters survive, as well as five step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and 36 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and seven sisters.
Services were held in Morton, Ill., on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.

Donald Eugene Rhodes
November 27, 1965 ~ October 29, 2003

Donald Eugene Rhodes, survived by his wife Lynn, and two daughters, Sara and Laura, died on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, as the result of a plane crash.
Rhodes left a Christian legacy with his family and friends, being known as one of the most charitable individuals to grace their lives. He never forsook the opportunity to love and bless others. His life was truly a legacy of good works.
Born Nov. 27, 1965, in Denver, Colo., he was graduated Durango High School in 1984. Rhodes fulfilled his long-time dream of flying when he ventured into an 18-year flying career by enrolling at Colorado Northwester Community College in Rangely in 1985. It was there he met his wife-to-be, Lynn Thayer.
After receiving his A.S. in Aviation Technology, he and Lynn traveled the U.S., flying for FedEx, Rio Grande Aviation and Airborne Express. They lived in many states including Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas and Georgia. Flying brought them to Casper, Wyo., and for the last nearly six years, they have enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, skiing and camping.
Rhodes, a devout Christian, a most loving husband and father, filed with compassion and goodness, now awaits the return of his Lord Jesus Christ. At that time, we will se him once again.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Bustard’s Funeral home and Crematory with Rev. Jerry Brown of Richardson Biblical Research Center officiating.

Mary Lee Smith
July 14, 1929 ~ October 22, 2003

Mary Lee Smith, 74, of Rangely, died Oct. 22, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction after suffering a heart attack at home.
Smith was born July 14, 1929, in Ft. Garland, Colorado the daughter of Burl and Ione Robinson. On March 19, 1949, she was united in marriage to Harold Smith in Alamosa. Mr. Smith survives in the family home.
Mary Lee and Harold moved to Rangely in 1979 when they began working at
CNCC in the aviation program. Mary Lee instructed ground school for potential pilots. She was a licensed instrument pilot. She had become one of Rangely’s most notable senior citizens in her more recent occupations at the Rangely Senior Citizen’s Center and as an Avon representative.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, Harold, Mary Lee is survived by one daughter, Colleen Anderson and her husband Howard of Snowflake, Arizona; one son, Duane Smith and his wife Sharon of St. Genevieve, Missouri; two sisters, Donna Catlin and her husband Keith of Montrose, Wilma Charos and her husband Harry of Fruita; two brothers, Curt Robinson and his wife Rose of Montrose; Wes Robinson and his wife Martha of Gunnison, five grandchildren, Jaime Smith, April Williams, Nathan and Zachary Smith and Andy Anderson and one great-grandchild, Angel Williams.
Memorial services were held Friday, Oct. 24 at the Rangely Christian Church with Pastor Wayne Nickson officiating. Friends may make memorial contributions to the breast cancer research organization of their choice in Mary Lee’s name.
Rangely Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Patricia L. Warren
December 10, 1925 ~ October 12, 2003

Patricia L. Warren, 77, of Meeker died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at the home of her son on Strawberry Creek.
Patricia Louise Moore was born Dec. 10, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Tom and Katherine (Kennison) Moore. She attended school in California and on Aug. 24, 1954, was united in marriage to Lewis 'Glen' Warren.
The couple honeymooned to Meeker, returning in October of 1965 where they made their home. Glen preceded her in death on June 28, 1973.
For many years, Warren worked as a nursing assistant at Pioneers Hospital where she was known for her quiet, gentle spirit and her loving ways.
She was a devoted mother who enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting, making many booties and blankets for newborn Meeker babies.
Survivors include her two children, Kathy and Bill and his wife Kim, all of Meeker, three-sister-in-laws, Doris Warren, Charlotte Wix and Betty Kincher and numerous friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 16 from Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Interment followed in the Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pioneers Hospital Memorial Fund.
Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
