Mike Blanchfield
June 15, 1961 - October 1, 2002
RANGELY — Rangely resident Mike Blanchfield, 41, died Oct. 1, 2002, near Rangely. Michael Joseph Blanchfield was born June 15, 1961, in Berea, Ohio, the son of Anthony J. and Patricia Blaylock Blanchfield. He was raised in Atlanta, Ga., and Bixby, Ariz. Mike served his country in the United States Marines.
For many years, Mike worked as a river runner and guide in Salida. He moved to Rangely where he attended the aviation program Colorado Northwestern Community College. At the time of his death he was employed by Hayes Petroleum in Rangely.
An avid outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed camping and snowboarding, playing his guitar and pool. He will long be remembered for his Saint Bernard, Lucy, whom he dearly loved.
Survivors include one son, Nathan and his mother Shari Blanchfield, both of Pensacola, Fla.; his parents, Joe and Patricia Blanchfield of Payson, Ariz.; one sister, Nancy and her husband Rob Kritkausky of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother Mark and his wife Stacey Blanchfield of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two nieces, Allison and Addison and one nephew Cole and his special friend, Amanda Lucero. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 5 from the Rangely Christian Church. Rangely Mortuary was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Embert A. (Spike) Clark
January 7, 1923 - September 25, 2002
RANGELY — Embert A. (Spike) Clark of Burnet, Texas, died on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002. Spike was born on Jan. 7, 1923, in Stamford, Texas, and moved as a child to Rangely. He graduated from Durango High School in 1941 and served in the Merchant Marine during WWII. After the war, he lived and worked in the Four Corners area for much of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lenora Inez (Tine) Rector of Rangely. Spike is survived by his wife Anne Rutledge Clark of Burnet, Texas; four sons, Mike Clark of Bayfield, Colo.; Craig Clark of Talofofo, Guam; Kelly Clark of Ft. Worth, Texas; David Clark and wife
Jackie of Burnet, Texas, and daughters, Lezli Clark of Denver; Barbara Clark Speer and husband Sam of Farmington, N.M.; nine grandhildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother Frank Clark of Farmington, N.M. and sister Mary Edna Hefley of Grand Junction.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Handicapped Hunting Program of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, 6060 Broadway, Denver, Colo., 80216.

Maxine F. Brannan
May 7, 1925 - Sept. 26, 2002
Well-known Maybell resident Maxine F. Brannan, 77, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at the Walbridge Memorial Wing in Meeker.
Maxine Fay Gerber was born May 7, 1925, on the family ranch near Craig. She was raised and attended schools in Moffat County and was united in marriage to Alvin Brannan north of Craig. Mr. Brannan preceded her in death in August of 1985.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mrs. Brannan was a devoted rancher's wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include four children, Pamela M. Buffham and her husband Jum of Meeker; Larry Brannan and his wife Devana of Gillette, Wyo.; John Brannan and his wife Liz and Edward Brannan and his wife Kris, both of Maybell; nine grandchildren, Ramsey Buffham of Smithfield, Utah; Connie Bailey of Eureka, Nev.; Travis Brannan of Maybell; Allan Steele of Maybell; Bruce Steele of Gillette, Wyo.; Selina Cammer of Steamboat Springs, Silas Cammer, also of Steamboat Springs, Michael and Nicholas Cammer both of Maybell; 11 great grandchildren, Brannan and Katelyn Buffham; Celina, Morgan and Witz Bailey; Christopher and Kaley Brannan; Jake, Jory, Dillon and Emily Steele; four brothers, Steve, Ervin, Eldon and Jim Gerber, all of Craig; five sisters, Mary Black of Montrose, Norma Herman of Grand Junction; Edna Brannan of Craig; Judy Ruth of Riverton, Wyo., and Goldie Arroyo of Craig.
Her husband, Alvin, one son, Quay and one daughter, Goldie Alice precede her in death as do three brothers, John, Leonard and Bill Gerber and one sister, Ruby Richardson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 28 from the Meeker Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment was made in the Craig Cemetery
under the direction of Meeker Mortuary.
Jacqueline Marie Bannerman
Aug. 11, 1921 - Aug. 28, 2002
Jackie passed away on Aug. 28, 2002. Born Aug. 11, 1921, in Chadron, Neb., she married Edward James Sexton Bannerman of Edgemont, S.D., on March 31, 1946, and was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Turnbull Potts, and her father, John Denman Potts.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Bannerman; her daughter, Candy Bannerman and husband Don Bryan; and her sons, John Bannerman and wife Vicki Voida Bannerman, and Scott Bannerman and wife Cincie Bell Bannerman. She has four grandchildren: Marissa Bannerman, Ian Bannerman and his wife Kim Parmer Bannerman, Sarah Bannerman and Edward James (EJ) Sexton Bannerman, II, and many friends.
Jackie and Ed lived in Rangely and Grand Junction and they have been residents of Grants, N.M., since 1960. Jackie was active in theatrical productions when she lived in Colorado and she was a Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter in Grants, N.M. She worked at Capri Jewelers in Grants and was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Cibola General Hospital.
Elizabeth Odelle Buckles
September 18, 1917 - September 15, 2002
Elizabeth Odelle Buckles passed away Sept. 15, 2002, at Porter Hospice in Littleton, Colo.
She was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Knox City, Texas, to Henry and Bettie (Hollis) Thompson Odelle, as she was known to all, grew up in Knox City graduating with the class of 1934. As a child she skipped the first grade, going directly from kindergarten to second grade. Consequently, she was only 16 when she graduated from high school. She was very active in all activities of the school and loved all types of sports. She played ladies baseball for five years, playing the position of pitcher, shortstop and center field. She also served as the team captain.
After graduation from high school she worked for an insurance company in Ft. Worth, Texas, and was in the restaurant business with her father.
Odelle met her future husband Robert Buckles through her brother Travis. Bob and Travis were in the same unit for four years in the Army during World War II.
Bob and Odelle were married Oct. 17, 1945, in Rochester, Texas. Bob and Odelle lived in Fillmore, Calif.; Oregon; Anchorage, Alaska; and Knox City, Texas; prior to their move to Meeker. In 1953, Bob and Odelle purchased their ranch on the upper White River Valley and moved to Meeker in April of 1954.
Odelle made her home on the ranch until her death. Odelle was active in the Democratic Party of Rio Blanco County, serving many years on the election board. She was a charter member of the Rainbow Valley Club serving several years as president. Odelle was an active member of the White River Community Club, and was a member of the Meeker Methodist Church.
Surviving Odelle is her husband Robert of Meeker, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Stuart Morgan of Dalton, Neb., daughter and son-in-law Judy and Theron Strickland of Littleton, Colo., and son and daughter-in-law David and Richelle Buckles of Meeker. Odelle had six grand children and seven great-grand children One sister-in-law Verna Thompson of Duarte, Calif., survives and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, six sisters and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Meeker Methodist Church at a later date. Memorials may be made to Meeker Methodist Church or the White River Community Club. Horan and McConaty of Denver is in charge of arrangements.
John I. Morrill, Sr.
Aug. 23, 1933 - Sept. 14, 2002
John I. Morrill, Sr., 69 of Rangely, passed away Sept. 14, 2002, surrounded by his family and friends.
John was born Aug. 23, 1933, in Steamboat Springs, the son of John W. Morrill and Irene Edith (Etzler) Morrill Myers. He served his country in the United States Army in the Korean War follow-up. On June 26, 1952, he was united in marriage to Bernadine Hayner in Grand Junction. Mrs. Morrill preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 2001.
John worked as a contract miner in the Uranium mines in Grants, Uravan and Moab and also did gold and silver mining. He also worked in Oregon in the sawmills for 12 years. Returning to Rangely Mr. Morrill worked in the coal mines. He enjoyed his work, football games, gambling and was known for his love of family and his knack as a practical joker.
Survivors include his five children, John Morrill and his wife Madelin of Rangely; Shannon Hartman and her husband John of Rangely; Rohnda Baughman and her husband George of Rangely, Teresa Aman and her husband Patrick of Napa, Idaho, and Christina Stephens and her husband Michael of Rangely; 15 grandchildren, John Thomas Morrill, Jeneth Cabazos and her husband Brandon, Jessrah Morrill, Stacey Shriver and her husband Kris, Scott Middleton, Jonathan and Jaimee Sepeda, Melissa and Michelle Baughman, Erin Roberts and her husband Ryan, Heather, Michael and Andrew Aman, Doug and Dawn Stephens, two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Abigail, his mother, Irene Morrill of Rangely, his mother-in-law, Ramona Adams of Grand Junction, two step-brothers, Kenny Myers of Reno, Nevada, Tom Myers of Riby, Idaho, one brother-in-law, Gordon Aumiller of Roosevelt, Utah, and four sisters-in-law, Peggy Morrill of Vernal, Utah; Edna Meryhew, Winnie Cameron and Lenora Aumiller, all of Grand Junction.
In addition to his wife he is preceded in death by his father, John W. Morrill, his step-father, Thomas Myers as well as two brothers, Dwight and Richard.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Rangely Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow in the Rangely Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Children's Primary Hospital of Salt Lake City through Rangely Mortuary, P.O. Box 351, Rangely.
John S. Beres
May 10, 1938 - Sept. 3, 2002
John S. Beres died on Sept. 3, 2002, from a short battle with cancer. He was born on May 10, 1938, to John and Mary Beres in Walsenburg, Colo. He was graduated from Meeker High School and he worked in the mining industry for many years.
He loved to fish, hunt, watch Denver Bronco games and spend time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Hudran) Beres.
He is survived by his wife, Linda and by sister Betty (Lee) Conrardy, brother Harry (Shirley) Beres, four children; Jeanetta (Gene) Ray, John Beres, Jr., Gary B. (Lindsey) Beres, Terre Niesham, eight grandchildren; Misty (Randal) Herman, David Martinez, Cindy Beres, D'andra Beres, Keisha Beres, Shanelle Beres, Kattie Sue Ramirez, RJ Ramirez, four great-grandchildren; Dustin Martinez, Josh Martinez, Teona Martinez and Devon Beres. He will also be missed by his first wife Nelda Beres and his niece, Cheryl (Hank) Schroder, nephews Mel (Teresa) Conrardy, Kurt (Renae) Conrardy, Jim (Jodi) Beres and seven great nieces and nephews, Gregory Conrardy, Breanna Conrardy, Matthew Conrardy, Justin Huck, Jimmie Beres, Jordon Beres and Courtney Schroder.
There was a celebration of John's life at his home at 3115 D 1/2 Road in Grand Junction on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the John Beres Memorial Fund at the Bank of Grand Junction, 326 Main St. Grand Junction, Colo. 81501.

Andrew Bryce (Andy) Booker
July 1, 1962 - Sept. 8, 2002
Andrew Bryce (Andy) Booker went to be with his Lord Sept. 8, 2002 after a lengthy and courageous battle with kidney disease.
Andy was born on July 1, 1962 in Denver to Arnold Bryce and Ruth McElroy Booker. His early years were spent in Rangely and he was graduated from high school in Synder, Texas in 1980. He later attended Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, Texas. He spent his following years as a Safety Supervisor in the oil fields of West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico. Andy and Kelly Harmon were united in marriage Aug. 5, 2001 in Midland. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Midland.
Survivors include his wife, Kelly of the home; a son, Adam Booker of Cibolo, Texas; his parents, Ruth and Bryce Booker of Midland; a brother, Greg Booker and wife Cindy of Rangely; a sister, Christi Harris of Midland; nieces, Erin Booker and Andria Booker both of Rangely and his best friend Brad Floyd of Chicago. Also surviving are numerous other friends and relatives.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Military honor guard rites for Donald L. Getz, 70, of Meeker will be held Friday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. from the Veterans Memorial Cemetery
of Western Colorado, 2830 "D" Road in Grand Junction. A reception will follow in the visitors center on the cemetery grounds.
Don and his wife Pat were the former owners of the Anchor Bar and Cafe in Rangely and had lived on County Road Eight, east of Meeker for a number of years. He died at his home on June 14, 2002, after an extended illness.

Bonnie L. Graham
March 16, 1939 - August 20, 2002
Well-known Meeker resident Bonnie L. Graham, 63, died Aug. 20, 2002, after a courageous nine month battle with cancer.
Bonnie Lou Johnson was born March 16, 1939, in Sutherland, Utah, the daughter of Amon and Arvilla (Erickson) Johnson. On July 13, 1957, she was united in marriage to Clayton Graham in Sutherland. Mr. Graham survives in the family's Powell Park home.
Bonnie was a loving and devoted homemaker, spending a great deal of time tending her garden and flowerbeds.
While her children were young she was a Cub Scout and 4-H Leader. She drove a school bus on Piceance Creek, transporting area children to meet the bus at Rio Blanco. At one point she worked as a secretary for the Rio Blanco Soil Conservation District.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bonnie served in many church callings. She was the Ward organist, playing for many funerals, weddings and church functions. Bonnie was active in the Relief Society, having served as Relief Society president.
Bonnie loved bowling and her bowling buddies. She played the piano for the Meeker Community Choir Christmas Cantata and taught piano in Meeker for many years. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and especially loved playing games and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to Clayton, her husband of 45 years, Bonnie is survived by one son, Kirk Graham of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Lora Henscheid and her husband Maurice of Grand Junction; eight grandchildren, Clay and Erica Graham, Brittany, Brianna, Derick and Shayla Henscheid, Brian Diaz and Corrie Rippy, three great-grandchildren, one sister, LaVon Thalman of Ogden, Utah, three brothers, Theron Johnson and his wife Jane of Colby, Kan., Floyd Johnson and his wife Pearl of Sandy, Utah and Don Johnson and his wife Tenna of Delta, Utah. At the time of her death, Bonnie was eagerly awaiting the birth of her ninth grandchild and fourth great-grandchild. Her parents, one sister, Janeanne and one great-grandson, Miles have preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 23 at the Meeker Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Interment was made in the Rose Hill Cemetery
of Rifle. Meeker Mortuary was entrusted with the arrangements.
Kathryn (Kay) Kooman Dey
March 22, 1931 - August 21, 2002
Kathryn (Kay) Kooman Dey, 71, of Grand Junction, passed away at 12:20 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2002, in her home. Kathryn Mabel Kooman was born March 22, 1931, in Corry, Penn., daughter of Mabel Kooman and the late Wilton Kooman.
Kay was a graduate of Ford City High School in Pennsylvania and the Western Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Her nursing career led her to Denver where she met and in 1955 married Robert Dey. Bob's first teaching job took them to Craig, Colo., where daughters Carla and Vanda were born. Subsequent career changes moved the family to Rangely, Palo Alto, Calif., and St. Paul, Minn. Kay continued her work as a nurse through these years. Soon after their return to Rangely in 1971, Kay accepted the position of school nurse, a position she enjoyed until the time of her retirement in 1992.
Bob and Kay took great pleasure in travel, which they did extensively following their retirement. After 30 years of calling Rangely home, the Deys moved to Grand Junction.
Kay is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Dey, of Grand Junction; her daughters, Carla Hodgson, of Grover, Colo., and Vanda Alexander, of Denver, Colo.; her mother, Mabel Kooman, of Sebring, Ohio; her brother, Jack Kooman, of Claremont, Calif.; and by three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 599 Thirty Road, Grand Junction, Colo., on Aug. 31, 2002, at 2 p.m. The family suggests memorials be made in Kay’s name to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, Colo. 81506.
Wynell Rector
September 10, 1917 - August 11, 2002
Wynell Rector, 84, of Page, Ariz., died on Aug. 11, 2002, in Palisade. Wynell was born to Jess and Ora (McSpadden) Price on Sept. 10, 1917, in Markley, Texas.
She spent her childhood in Jermyn, Texas. Wynell was previously married to Clifford Pennell and then married to Lloyd (Bish) Rector, uncle of Carl Rector of Rangely. Wynell has lived in Rangely and Big Water, Utah. Wynell was exceptionally good mother and housewife and a lover of the great outdoors. Her husband Lloyd Rector and brother Bill Price preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Jack Pennell of Palisade, Clifford Pennell of Clifton; daughter Pat Ridenhour of Page, Ariz.; brothers Donald Price of El Cajon, Calif., Dan Price of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A. Sharon McCracken Mott
August 3, 1945 - August 15, 2002
A. Sharon McCracken Mott, 57, of Vernal died on Aug. 15, 2002, in the Ashley Valley Medical Center after a courageous and life long battle with cancer. Sharon was born Aug. 3, 1945, in Chillicothe, Miss., to Clyde F. and Louetta Rooney McCracken. She married Albert L. Mott on Aug. 4, 1961, in Lamar, Colo.
Sharon was a survivor; she was listed on the American Cancer Society's survivor's list, and had donated her hair to the cancer society for use in wigs. She was an inspiration to all that knew her.
With Sharon, family was her number one priority. She was a wonderful and devoted wife, and a kind and loving mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed being outdoors and lived life to the fullest. Sharon was a member of the protestant church.
Sharon is survived by her husband Albert, of Vernal; children: Cindy C. Mott, Diamondville, Wyo., Ester (Troy) Gardner, and Berry (Ann) Mott, both of Vernal. Sharon is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers: Clyde McCracken, Macon, Miss.; Paul McCracken, Rangely, Colo.; Clarence McCracken, Sauguatch, Colo.; Bill McCracken, Denver, Colo.; and a sister, Joyce McMinn of Bloomfield, N.M. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Raymond.
Funeral services were held on Aug. 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Spafford Funeral Home. Interment was held in the Vernal Memorial Park under direction of the Spafford Funeral Home.
Dr. Ted Albers
October 16, 1921 - July 8, 2002
Dr. Ted Albers, western Colorado native, longtime resident of Grand Junction, and president emeritus of Mesa State College, passed away at his home on July 8, 2002. He was 80.
Please join in a memorial service Saturday, Aug. 17, 10:30 a.m. at the Avalon Theater in downtown Grand Junction, 7th and Main.
Ted was born in Maybell, Colo., Oct. 16, 1921, to Amos W. and Clara Maloney Albers. He met his future wife, Maxine Whicker, in 1927, and their two families became lifelong friends. After attending a one-room school in Maybell, Ted finished Cole Jr. High in Denver, and graduated from Manual Arts High School there in 1939. He entered Colorado State University, and worked for Mountain Bell; then joined the US Army Air Corps in 1942, graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1943. Ted and Maxine married April 4, 1943, in Wilmington, N.C.
After World War II, Ted returned from Europe to Mountain Bell; then studied at the University of Denver, graduating in 1949. He taught social sciences at Meeker High School, 1949-52. He earned his master's degree from Denver University in 1952; then continued as principal at Meeker, 1952-55. Ted worked for the Colorado Education Association, the Colorado State Department of Education, and the University of Colorado extension division until 1965. He earned his doctorate at CU Boulder in 1964; then served as assistant superintendent of schools in Mesa County District 51, 1966-68. In 1968, he co-founded the Community College of Denver and in 1970 became the first director of the Red Rocks Campus.
Dr. Albers served as president of Mesa College from 1970 until the end of 1974. He provided the leadership responsible for converting Mesa from a two-year community college to a well respected, yet still community-oriented baccalaureate institution. Ted retired early from his professional life due to advanced coronary artery disease. Until he died, Dr. Albers remained very proactive in advocating an expanding role for Mesa State College, always focusing on the interests and needs of its students.
After retirement, Ted concentrated on devoting himself to his family and to improving his health. He adopted a strict dietary regimen and stayed physically active by raising fruit on his acreage and putting up hay on the family ranch in northwest Colorado. He also provided constant support to Maxine, who served for 15 years in Mesa County as one of Colorado's first female County Commissioners. He participated in a multitude of community organizations, such as Lions Club, Mesa County Historical Society, Mesa Developmental Services, Grand Junction Musical Arts Association, United Way, Western Colorado Center for the Arts, Club 20, Greenbelt, Salvation Army and many others.
Ted survived the death of his parents and two brothers, Lee and Vernon. He leaves his wife Maxine of Grand Junction, children Ted L. Albers and Rhonda Davidson of Colorado Springs, and grandchildren Shannon and Brian Davidson.
Although he received many honors and awards in his lifetime, Dr. Albers always considered it his privilege to ably serve others. He is cherished universally as not only capable and intelligent, but as kind, compassionate, and humble - a truly wonderful man.

Jack W. Riggan 1932-2002
Jack Wayne Riggan, 69, died Aug. 8. Jack was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and came to Colorado in 1939, working and residing in Moffat and Eagle counties. In 1954 he married Loretta (Retsie) Gates, his beloved wife and helper. Jack who had the heart of a pioneer and preferred the ways of the homesteader, worked hard all of his life. After retiring from Vail Associates in 1979, he continued building cabins where there weren't any and writing songs about his life, his Savior and the Bible. Jack was quick-witted, quick to help others and always able to make us laugh. All who knew him will miss the man and his music. Jack is survived by his dear wife, Retsie, four sons; Jack L. Riggan of Grand Junction, Rod Riggan and his wife Barbara of Grand Junction, Marty Riggan and his wife Gail of Montrose and Rick Riggan and his wife Marcee of Eagle. Two sisters Rose married to Marlin Behrends of Waterloo, Iowa, and Pat married to Bob Adams of Grand Junction; two brothers Richard Riggan and his wife Nancy of Orange City, Iowa, and Robert Riggan of Des Moines, Iowa. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive him. His father Vern Riggan, mother Jane Withem, brother Russell Riggan, sister Ramona McMillan and grandson Jonathan Riggan preceded him in death.
