Nelson McFarland
March 13, 1932 - July 10, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Cedar Mesa resident, Nelson McFarland, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at his residence. He was 72.
No services are planned.
Arthur Nelson McFarland was born on March 13, 1932, to John and Edith (Cable) McFarland in Sedalia, Missouri. He spent his childhood in Denver and graduated from East High School. He furthered his education at Denver University. He spent several years in Alameda, California, before moving to Cedaredge eleven years ago.
Nelson married Jayne Black on May 2, 1951, in Raton, New Mexico. They just celebrated their fifty - third anniversary. She survives.
Mr. McFarland was a manager for a transportation company. He served his country during World War II in the United States Coast Guard. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He especially loved to “tinker” around the house.
Those grateful to have shared in Nelson’s life include his wife, Jayne McFarland of Cedaredge, CO; a son, Van McFarland of Torrance, CA; a brother, John McFarland and his wife Billie of Auburndale, FL. He is further survived by two grandchildren: Jessie and Doug McFarland of Torrance, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Stanley McFarland and Clayton McFarland.

Howard B. Wilson
November 17, 1923 - July 8, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Lifelong North Fork area resident, Howard B. Wilson, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 80 years old.
A visitation for family and friends is planned for Monday, July 12th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss. Reverend Ross Blackstock will preside. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery
in Hotchkiss.
Howard Brance Wilson was born on November 17, 1923 in Seneca, Missouri to the late Brance and Lillie (Snow) Wilson. When Howard was just six months old his family moved to Rogers Mesa, Colorado. He attended school in Lazear and graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1941. He continued his education at Mesa Junior College until he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served during World War II.
On September 28, 1948, in Delta, Colorado, Howard married Charlotte Ann Keough. She survives.
Mr. Wilson was a fruit grower and horticulturist. The fruit industry was extremely important to him and over the years he worked with many fruit growers in the counties of Delta, Montrose and Mesa. He was a Charter Member of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge No. 1807, Past President of the Hotchkiss Kiwanis Club and very active in the Republican Party, having served as precinct committee chairman for many years. He was a member of the Horticulture Society of Colorado, the Disabled American Veterans and a former 4 - H Leader. Howard enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Comet Drug Coffee Club. His other interests included hunting and fishing.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Howard’s life include his wife of over 55 years, Charlotte Ann Wilson of Hotchkiss; one daughter, Beverley Dwire and husband Bruce of Grand Junction; and one son, Edwin Wilson of Delta. He is further survived by four grandchildren, Teresa and Karen Dwire and Justin and Audrey Wilson.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and R.D. and one sister, Leila.

Lester D. Byers
March 26, 1938 - July 4, 2004
OLATHE - Western Slope native, Lester D. “Bud” Byers, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2004, at his residence in Olathe, Colorado. He was 66.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 6th at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, July 7th, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Bruce Martin and David Nichols will officiate. Burial will follow at Pea Green Cemetery.
Lester Dean “Bud” Byers was born on March 26, 1938, to Harvey Alfred and Edna Alice (Boyd) Byers in Delta County, Colorado. He spent his childhood in the Delta/Montrose/Olathe areas and attended school in Olathe.
Bud married Bessie L. Howard on March 14, 1959, in Cushing, Oklahoma. They celebrated forty - five years of marriage together this year. She survives.
Mr. Byers was a water master and had been employed with the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association for thirty years. He had resided in Olathe for thirty - five years. Bud belonged to the General Assembly and Church of the First Born in Delta. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and hunting. The love of his life was his family and grandchildren. He loved to joke and tease them with stories. He found great pleasure in helping those in need.
Those grateful to have shared in Bud’s life include his wife, Bessie Byers of Olathe; four sons: Dean Byers and his wife Pam of Morgantown, IN, Jerry Byers and his wife Janet of Olathe, CO, Larry Byers and his wife Carol of Grand Junction, CO, and Randy Byers and his wife Denise of Moore, OK; a daughter, Tammie Nichols and her husband David of Platteville, CO; his father, Harvey Byers; four sisters: Betty Ashby, Patty Arnold and her husband Bob, Wanda Gibson and her husband Greg all of Delta, CO, and Cheryl Retherford and her husband Jody of Olathe, CO; one brother - in - law, Forrest Neely of Cortez, CO. He is further survived by eighteen grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Byers; a sister, Mary Neely; a brother - in - law, Doyle Ashby; and a grandson, Kolten Byers.

Trinidad “Trino” Ledesma
August 18, 1940 - July 3, 2004
DELTA - Lifelong Delta resident, Trinidad “Trino” Ledesma, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Montrose Memorial Hospital. He was 63.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at the Mesa View Cemetery
in Delta. Pastor Marion Hofman will officiate.
Trinidad Ledesma was born on August 18, 1940, to Joe and Mary (Dominquez) Ledesma at Delta, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Delta and attended schools at St. Michael’s and Delta High School. He graduated with the class of 1958.
Trino married Bonnie L. Beach on June 7, 1960, at Twin Falls, Idaho. They celebrated forty - four years of marriage together this year. She survives.
Mr. Ledesma was self employed in the construction business. He had served on ag and community boards throughout the community. He was a member of the Thunder Mountain Flywheelers, the Show and Pull Tractor Club, and the Western Slope Antique Power Club. He enjoyed stock car racing, snowmobiling, bowling, and especially tractor pulling.
Those grateful to have shared in Trino’s life include his wife, Bonnie Ledesma of Delta; two sons, Todd Ledesma and his wife Christina of Delta, CO, and Tony Ledesma of Montrose, CO; two daughters: Tina Moralez and her husband Steve of Delta, CO, and Tami Ledesma - Steadham and her husband Eric of South Carolina; his parents, Joe and Mary Ledesma of Delta, CO; and one sister Irene D. Ledesma of Grand Junction, CO. He is further survived by six grandchildren: Candis and Steve Moralez of Delta, CO, Gabrielle and Vanessa Steadham of South Carolina, and Shelbi and Trevor Ledesma of Delta, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth.

Benjamin A. Rowell
April 22, 1916 - July 2, 2004
PAONIA - On the morning of July 2, 2004, Ben A. Rowell passed away at Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident for the past 7 weeks. With his passing, we have lost a leader in our family and a friend to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed. God graced us with Ben’s presence and wisdom for 88 years. Many feel his death was due to his desire to be with his wife of 64 years. Ruth passed away seven weeks ago.
Ben was born on April 22, 1916, in Price, Utah, to Wilbur Spaulding and Thelma (Stillwagon) Rowell. He spent his early years in Price and Green River, Utah, obtaining his education and helping his family survive the perils of the depression.
On June 29, 1940, Ben married Ruth Lucille Hawkins in Moab, Utah, and settled on a ranch in Castle Valley, east of Moab. It was on this ranch they started their family with three daughters. In 1947, they moved to Paonia, Colorado, where they settled and added to their family a son. Paonia remained their home for the rest of their lives.
Ben had been a rancher, logger, blacksmith business owner, coal miner, prospector and mechanic, along with being an admired story - teller and poet. Until arthritis had taken its toll, Ben would entertain many with his accordion music. He was an instant friend to all he met.
Ben is survived by daughters, Catherine “Kitty” Lange and husband Linvall of Grand Junction, Anna Jean Schmidt and husband Don of Hotchkiss, and Dorothy Richardson and husband Carl of Montrose; and by one son, Ron Rowell and wife Debbie of Paonia. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 24 great - grandchildren, with 2 more to join us this summer; 2 great - great - grandchildren; one brother, Dan Rowell and wife Ginny of Eagle Point, Oregon; one sister Kathleen Hawkins and husband John of Redlands Mesa; and many nieces and nephews.
In additions to his wife Ruth, Ben was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Dori, June, and Susie.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 10th at 1:30 p.m., at the Cedaredge Cemetery. James Gall will preside.

Boots Johnston
October 30, 1932 - June 5, 2002
AURORA - Boots Johnston, a resident of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Reche Canon Care Center at Ontario, California. She was 69.
Memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, July 12th at Horan & McConaty, 3201 S. Parker Rd. in Aurora, Colorado, with Father Mark Bettinger of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta officiating.
Eula Maye “Boots” Newton was born on October 30, 1932, to Ed and Essie (Eula) Newton in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. She spent her early childhood and attended schools in Ft. Smith. She lived a number of years in Aurora, Colorado, before moving to Ontario, California.
Ms. Johnston had been a secretary for Gateway High School in the Aurora Public School system for twenty years. She enjoyed painting, fishing, and especially had fun playing poker with the girls.
Those grateful to have shared in Boot’s life include her son, Cameron Johnston and his wife Janette of Eckert, CO; a daughter, Claudette Pfeiler of San Antonio, TX. She is further survived by four grandchildren: Courtney Pfeiler of San Antonio, TX, Grace Julia Mae Johnston, Jake Copeland, and Tom Copeland all of Eckert, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy Jean Miller
April 7, 1928 - June 25, 2004
DELTA - Delta County resident, Dorothy J. Miller, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. She was 76.
No services are planned at this time.
Dorothy Jean Rottluff was born on April 7, 1928, to Ray August and Ramona (Esparza) Rottluff in Calexico, California. She spent her childhood and attended schools in California.
On June 29, 1969, Dorothy married Howard M. Miller. He preceded her in death in February, 2002, in Washington.
Those grateful to have shared in Dorothy’s life include her son, Terry Lee Pratt and his wife Lorraine L. of Delta, CO; one daughter, Kathy Gay and her husband Don of Westville, S.C.; and one sister; Daisy Chancey of Seattle, WA. She is further survived by several grandchildren and great - grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; and a brother, Ray Rottluff.

Leonard E. Cole
November 13, 1907 - June 25, 2004
DELTA - Delta resident, Leonard E. Cole, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004 at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta. He was 96.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1st at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday July 2nd at the Presbyterian Church in Delta with Pastor Bill Forbes officiating. Burial will follow at the Delta City Cemetery
with military honors being performed by the Harry A. White American Legion Post #65 of Delta.
Leonard E. Cole was born on November 13, 1907, to Everett and Emma Rebecca (Berger) Cole at Phillipsburg, Kansas. He attended school at Phillipsburg and farmed there as a young man. In 1940, he moved to Colorado, but kept his farming interests in Kansas for the next few years.
On April 12, 1942, Leonard entered the United States Army where he served his country for the next three and a half years during World War II.
Leonard married Vera E. Mason on June 30, 1942, at Smith Center, Kansas. She survives. To this union one son, Ronald Lee Cole, was born on July 30, 1947.
Upon returning from World War II, the family settled at Brighton, Colorado, where they lived for several years. Leonard was the Veteran Service Officer of Adams County in Brighton for ten years. In 1961, the family moved to Delta, Colorado, and bought a ranch in the Pea Green area. In 1969, they sold the ranch and moved into Delta on Garnet Mesa where they have since resided. After retiring from ranching Leonard spent several years with a special hobby he enjoyed of horses and horse drawn vehicles. He attended many parades, anniversaries, and weddings with his horse and buggy in the Delta County area.
Leonard was active in both district 5 and 11 of the American Legion, in which he held many offices in the District as well as the Department. He was a Legion member for fifty - nine years. He was also very active as a member of the Round - Up Club. He was even given the honor of a life time membership with the organization. In 1989, Leonard joined the Grand Mesa Harness Club and enjoyed their many activities. He was also a member of the national and local levels of A.A.R.P. He joined the Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, Kansas as a young man and continued attendance in Brighton, Delta, and Apache Junction, Arizona.
Leonard and Vera have spent winters in Arizona since 1976, when she retired from teaching.
Those grateful to have shared in Leonard’s life include his wife Vera of Delta; one son, Ron and his wife Marilyn of Greeley, CO; one grandson, Brian Cole and his wife Shannon of Germany; one granddaughter, LeAnn Redfern and husband Joe of Greeley, CO; and one great - granddaughter, Isabel Cole of Germany; and one great - grandson, Hunter Redfern of Greeley, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Warren, Alanison, Murlen, Archie and Darwin Cole.

Roy D. McAnelly
October 15, 1918 - June 22, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Lifetime Cedaredge resident, Roy D. McAnelly, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at his home. He was 85.
A funeral service is planned for 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 25th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge. Pastor Phil Neely will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedaredge Cemetery.
Roy Dayton McAnelly was born on October 15, 1918 in Fort Morgan, Colorado to the late Charles and Jessie (Johnson) McAnelly. He spent his childhood in Fort Morgan and the family later moved to Cedaredge where Roy graduated from high school.
Roy married Isal Angel on July 30, 1987 in Cedaredge. She survives. Roy was previously married to Betty Horn. She preceded him in death in 1980.
Mr. McAnelly retired after over 25 years of service from the Delta County School District as a custodian at the Cedaredge Elementary and Middle Schools. His hobbies included building model airplanes and making jewelry from gemstones.
Survivors include his wife Isal McAnelly of Cedaredge; one daughter, Judith Beard and husband John of Tacoma, WA; one step - son, Kenneth Shields and wife Phyllis of Cedaredge; one sister, Ila Mae Haptonstall and husband Ron of Eckert, CO; and one grandson, Michael McGillin.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.
