John Rodney Barney
September 15, 1908 - August 14, 2004
John Rodney Barney, 95, of Meeker, passed away Aug. 14, 2004, at Pioneers Hospital with his wife and family at his side.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Meeker on Friday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday until 5 p.m. or Friday until 10 a.m. at Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker.
John was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Williston, North Dakota to George W. Barney and Dora Broskosky. He was the oldest son of 12 children.
He lived on a homestead in North Dakota and Montana then for a time lived in DeRuyter, New York. In 1929 he filed on his own homestead near Savery, Wyoming. After a few years he moved to Rangely, Colorado and was involved in ranching with his brothers. There he married his wife, Syble Williams in Craig, Colorado on Oct. 26, 1942. In 1950 they moved to the Meeker area and purchased the LO7 Ranch on Flag Creek where he lived for the remainder of his life. John enjoyed the cowboy life, ranching, livestock, hunting and most of all, his family. He was known for his hard work, honesty and integrity and did not know a stranger.
In 1996, he finished and published a book on his life story titled '‘Looking Back’ My True Memories', a great accomplishment at 87 years.
Survivors include his wife, Syble, sons Lynn (wife, Myrna) of Loveland, Shane (wife, Bonnie) of Sheridan, Wyoming, daughters Kay (husband, Bob) Bivens of Meeker, Phyllis (husband, Bill) Lake of Meeker, Beverly (husband, Bob) Moss of Loomis, California, Debra Barney of Meeker, four sisters and one brother, 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the John R. Barney Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies. The proceeds of the memorial fund will go to preserve John’s love of western history and the cowboy way of life. Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Staff Sergeant Grant R. Unrein
October 7, 1973 - August 5, 2004
Staff Sergeant Grant R. Unrein, 30, died Aug. 5, 2004, at the Veteran Affair’s Medical Center in Grand Junction following a valiant battle with cancer.
Grant Ross Unrein was born Oct. 7, 1973, in Boulder the son of Denis and Linda Kay (Switzer) Unrein. As a young boy the family moved to Meeker where Grant attended schools, graduating with the class of 1992. While in school Grant participated in track, wrestling and football. He graduated on Saturday and on Wednesday began a 12-year career with the United States Army.
Grant was a fine and outstanding soldier as can be witnessed by his numerous medals and citations. Shortly before his death he was honored by the United States of America by receiving the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post #5843, enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing and was an excellent pool player.
As a youngster, Grant’s mother, Linda, passed away. It was Grant who 'helped' his father propose to Linda’s best friend, Anne, who became his second mom. He is survived by his parents, Denis and Anne Unrein of Meeker, one brother, Denis Unrein, II of Las Animas, one step-sister, Leslie Croley of Mt. Vernon, Wash., three nieces, Jesika Unrein, Cheri Filloon and Lindsay Croley, one nephew, Trenton Croley and a great-niece, Neveah Filloon. He is also survived by his grandmother Opal Switzer of Medford, Ore.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 from Cochran Memorial Chapel. Full military rites will precede the interment in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening until 8 p.m. or Saturday prior to services at the funeral home.
John Dole
March 20, 1909 - August 7, 2004
John Dole suffered a massive stroke at home on Aug. 4, 2004, and was in a coma until his death at the Palo Home Hospice on Aug. 7, 2004, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
John William Dole was born to Ernest and Isadora Dole on March 20, 1909, in Springfield, Mo. He is survived by his wife, Opal. Two sons; Tim of Meeker, Thomas of Wheatridge, one daughter and son-in-law; Marka and Walter Weiss of Idaho Springs. He had three granddaughters; Sandy, Tammy and Suzan, two grandsons; John and Steven and three great-grandchildren; Katie, Kaci, and Wyatt. He has two remaining sisters; Ina and Emma and two brothers; Howard and Harold.
John’s parents brought him to Colorado in a wagon as a young child where they dry land farmed in Eastern Colorado. He left home when he was in his early teens and eventually worked his way to Colorado Springs where at 17, he got a job working to build a new boy’s school called Fountain Valley School. He pushed alot of wheel barrows of cement up ramps for the gym and other buildings. He met the head master of the school, Francis Froelicher during this time and developed a close friendship that lasted a lifetime. Froelicher’s influence and inspiration shaped John into the man that he became. On Aug. 18, 1934, John married the girl that he would spend the next 70 years with, Opal Drinnon. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and spent two years in Germany and France in the infantry. In 1951, Froelicher left Fountain Valley School and John soon followed leaving his job as ranch manager after 25 years. He and Opal, with Tim and Marka moved to Marvine Ranch to work for Robert and Bernice Barbour where he remained for the next 23 years. Thomas was born in Meeker. John loved working and living in the high mountains, always enjoying the time he spent with his horses and his passion for fly fishing. He spent many years as a school board member. He was a favorite of the teachers as they knew he would try his hardest to make their requests a reality. Education was very important to him and until the day he had his stoke, he read the whole paper and waded his way though the Wall Street Journal on the weekends. In 1971, John and Opal started going to Hawaii in the winter and eventually spent six months there and six months in Colorado often spending the summer working again at Marvine. In 1992, they sold their home they had owned for several years in Vernal, Utah, and started spending most of the year in Hawaii. After John gave up his driver’s license, he bought a four wheel Lark which he called his horse and covered Honolulu until his death. Richard G. Lyttle
December 22, 1924 - October 11, 2004
Well-known Meeker historian Richard G. Lyttle, 79, died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 10 at Pioneers Hospital.
Richard Gibson Lyttle, Jr. was born Dec. 22, 1924, in Laramie, Wyo., the son of Richard Gibson and Jessie Margaret (Gillis) Lyttle. Rich attended school in Meeker, having been graduated with Rio Blanco County High School in 1942. Rich attended college at the University of Colorado, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism in 1949. He went on to further his education with a Master of Arts degree in Social Sciences from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.
On June 18, 1950 Rich was united in marriage to Mary Beth 'Becky' Latson at the Methodist Church in Glenwood Springs. From 1933 until leaving Meeker in 1962, Rich helped operate the family newspaper, The Meeker Herald. In 1962, he left Meeker to teach school in Nome, Alaska, leaving Nome to begin teaching at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, Minn. Rich retired from teaching in 1988 and returned to his beloved Meeker where he became active in numerous community affairs.
Rich served on the Meeker Town Council, on the vestry of St. James&Mac226; Church, on the board of the Rio Blanco County Historical Society and was an active member of the Meeker Lion’s Club. He was a 40-year member of the Masonic Lodge, having been initiated and raised while living in Nome. At the time of his death he held dual lodge memberships in Thief River Falls and in Rio Blanco Lodge #80, AF&AM.
He loved and was considered by many to be the preeminent expert of Meeker history, so much of the history having been documented by his father and grandfather. Rich wrote a column titled 'Roping the Past' in the Rio Blanco Herald Times and also wrote a column on the history of St. James’ Church for the church newsletter. He taught a course in Meeker history at Colorado Northwestern Community College and also assisted in literacy education in Meeker. He was an active member of St. James’ Church where he routinely assisted in teaching the Wednesday Children’s Chapel. For many years he was a leader in the Explorer Scout program, using his vast knowledge and love of the outdoors to work with young scouts.
Rich was a voracious and unapologetic C.U. Buffalo fan, he remained true to Minnesota and was a die hard Viking and Minnesota Twins fan. He will long be remembered for the many years he portrayed Nathan Meeker in the Meeker Massacre Pageant, aptly donning a T-shirt that quipped 'I Survived The Meeker Massacre.' Rich had a great sense of humor and a steadfast sense of honor, trust and dignity.
Survivors include Becky, his loving wife of 54 years, one son Bill Lyttle and his wife Annette of Colorado Springs, two sisters, Betty Oldland and Margo Coons, both of Meeker, two nieces, Janice Oldland and Kathy Thornsby and two nephews, Alan Oldland and Robert Oldland.
Rich’s parents and one nephew, Don Coons have preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. this morning, Thursday, Oct. 14 at St. James’ Episcopal Church with Randall Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted by Rio Blanco Lodge #80, AF&AM.
Friends may make memorial contributions to the Rich Lyttle Memorial Fund through First National Bank of the Rockies. Cochran Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Wilma I. Amick Van Buskirk
November 3, 1916 - October 10, 2004
Born Nov. 3, 1916, in Meeker, Colo., Wilma I. Amick Van Buskirk went home to her Heavenly Father on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004.
She was a resident of Santa Fe, N.M., for 53 years and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving her are her husband of 65 years, Marvin L. Van Buskirk, Sr. of Santa Fe, N.M., her son Marvin L. (Lee) Van Buskirk, Jr. and his wife Ellie of Lucasville, Ohio; daughter Linda I. King and her husband James of Santa Fe, N.M.; five grandsons: Scott A. Van Buskirk, Marc L. Van Buskirk, Christopher C. King and wife Christine, Paul M. King and wife Tammy, and Daniel Z. King and wife Renee; granddaughter Kara L. McKay and husband Eric; three great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters, and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at McGee Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 11:30 a.m., also at McGee Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Sybil Joslin
Well-known Meeker resident Sybil Joslin died October 12, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 19 from St. James’ Church with The Rev. Stephen Samples officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers friends make memorial contributions to the White River Museum through Cochran Memorial Chapel.
Mary E. Tucker
June 6, 1924 - November 25, 2004
Mary E. Tucker, 80, of Meeker died Nov. 25, 2004, at Valley View Hospital with her loving family at her side.
Mary Elizabeth Coberly was born June 6, 1924, in Trinidad, Colo., the daughter of Joseph Dewey and Stella Anna Mae (Baumgardner) Coberly. She was raised in Trinidad and on Friday, May 13, 1939, was united in marriage to Alvy Lloyd Tucker in Raton, N.M. Mr. Tucker survives in the family home.
Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She worked at the Craig Gamble’s Store until the family moved to Rangely where she was employed at Nichols Market first as a clerk and later as a bookkeeper. She later worked for Chevron in Rangely until she and Alvy retired. She was a long-time member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron and Chapter Secretary of Rangely Chapter 143, later belonging to Meeker Chapter 100 and Winslow Chapter #180 in Glenwood Springs.
She was, also, a member of the Rangely Christian Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #5843 in Meeker.
In addition to Alvy, her loving husband of 65 years, Mary is survived by three children, Betty Darleen (Jerry) Sturbaum of Longmont; Alvy Richard (Mickey) Tucker of New Castle; Diana (Dennis) Chandler of Northglenn; 13 grandchildren, Katrina (Ray) Pahlmann of Henderson, Nev.; Rachelle (Steve) Owens of Greenwood Village, Colo; Christopher (Pam) Sturbaum of Spokane, Wash.; Vincent (Joan) Sturbaum of Okinawa, Japan; Gregory Sturbaum of Loveland, Colo.; Deborah (Edward) Gemoya of Grand Junction; Valorie Tucker of Youngstown, Ohio; Donald (Kim) Tucker of Snowmass, Colo.; Tom Tucker of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mary (Kevin) Fender of Omaha, Neb.; Coreen (Jim) Engstrom of Broomfield, Colo.; Kendra (Kirk) Kaiser of Broomfield; and Kyle (Jamie) Chandler of Windsor, Colo.; 43 great grandchildren; one nephew and three nieces. Her parents, one sister, Mae, one brother Joe and one granddaughter, Stella, have preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at Monday, Nov. 29 at Cochran Memorial Chapel in Meeker. Interment was made Wednesday, Dec. 1 in the Trinidad Masonic Cemetery
in Trinidad, Colo.

Clayton E. Ages
May 31, 1928 - January 21, 2005
Clayton E. Ages was born on May 31, 1928, in Bonanza, Colo., to John Henry and Grace (Wise) Ages. Ages grew up in the Meeker area where he started working at a very young age as a sheep herder for Bill Jensen and a ranch hand on the Fred Winslet ranch.
Ages married Dorothy M. Wheeler on May 22, 1950, in Grand Junction, Colo., and to this union three children were born. They lived in Meeker and Ages worked as an operator for the county road department until 1954 at which time they moved to Naturita, Colo., where he worked in the uranium mines. They later moved to Bloomington, Minn., where he worked for a foundry and lived there for nineteen years. He retired and moved back to Meeker, living there until moving to Craig in 1991.
Clayton enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, four-wheeling, working with leather and doing mechanic work.
Ages died on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, while on a shopping trip in Steamboat Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Ages of Craig; daughters Bonnie Kearns of Bloomington, Minn., and Debra Ages of Craig; a son, Monty Ages of Craig; grandchildren Manyon (Lacretia) Ages, Johnathon and Ryan; great-grandchildren Ashley Amanda and Devon Ray; a brother, John (Doris) Ages of Craig; a niece Ginger Brunson of California and her daughter Kim and her husband Mark of Grand Junction; a nephew Mark Ages and family of Craig and a brother-in-law Robert Warren of Leadville, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Eileen Warren, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Levi and Tillie Jane Wheeler.
Services were held Jan. 28 at Grant Mortuary of Craig with David Carrick officiating.
H.J. 'Tinker' Crowell
January 21, 2005
H.J. 'Tinker' Crowell, 72, of Sanibel, Fla., passed away on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005.
Tinker was a graduate of Camden High School, Camden, Ark., and attended Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and retired as a Crude Oil Broker in 1988. Tinker was a frequent visitor of Meeker, and has owned the C Lazy S Ranch since 1991. Tinker is survived by his wife Bettye, his five daughters and eight grandchildren.

Donna Brandenburg
December 24, 1937 - January 28, 2005
Donna Brandenburg passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Community Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.
Donna was born Dec. 24, 1937, to Floyd and Zola Brown. She spent her childhood in Ridgeway, Colo., where she was also graduated from high school. She married Jerry Tullio and they divorced. She later married Allen M. Brandenburg. He survives.
Donna previously lived in Rangely, Wyoming and Montrose. She had been a Host Home provider for the mentally disabled for the past 15 years in Montrose. She loved life and enjoyed fishing and playing softball.
Other survivors include a son, Todd Tullio of Mustang, Okla.; two daughters, Tami Williams of Rangely; Jeri Prescott of Grand Junction; three sisters, Doris Zadra of Colorado Springs; Ila Reddick and Mary Markay, both of Montrose; four granddaughters; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
A graveside memorial service was held at Grand View Cemetery
in Montrose Feb. 1.

Earl Harold Vaughan
January 27, 1922 - January 31, 2005
Earl Harold Vaughan, died in Rangely on Jan. 31, at the Rangely District Long Term Care Center. Earl was the son of Harold and Mary (Maudlin) and was born in Sunbeam, Colo., on Jan. 27, 1922.
Earl held several jobs throughout life including being a rancher, miner and oil field worker. Earl was married to Bonnie Kitchen, in 1971, but she preceded him in death in 1993.
Other survivors include four sisters; Mary Mae McMahan, Sacramento, Calif.; Judy (Wren) McGruder, Silt, Colo.; Susie Porter, Mo.; Bobbie Erickson, Las Vegas, Nev.; and two brothers—Lloyd (Charlotte) Vaughan, Craig, Colo.; and Boyd (Jo) Vaughan, Broomfield, Colo.
Proceeded in death were his parents and two brothers Elmer Vaughan, Jake Vaughan and two sisters Faye Deiter and Nellie Bunnell.
There are no services at this time.
Josephine Kiser
May 30, 1925 - January 25, 2005
Loving wife and mother, Josephine Kiser of Meeker, passed away Jan. 25, 2005. She was born May 30, 1925, in Johnstown, Penn to David and Bertha Rose.
The Depression brought a deeper meaning of values for Jo and her family.
She met her husband Pete of 60 years by being his pen pal while he was stationed in Greenland during World War II.
Pete and Jo moved with their three sons to Colorado Springs in 1960.
She was a full-time housewife making life wonderful for her husband and sons for 18 years before moving to Meeker in 1978. Pete and Josephine built their house on Strawberry Creek where the wildlife and flowers filled her life with joy.
The love and dedication towards her husband and family will live forever in the hearts of those she gave life to.
Memorial contributions can be made to the 'Walbridge Wing Songbirds.'
Robert Eugene Buckles
September 29, 1916 - January 24, 2003
Robert Eugene Buckles, 86, of Meeker, Colo., passed away Jan. 24, 2003, at the Rose Memorial Hospital in Denver. Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Chris Carr officiating. Military rites will be conducted. Horan & McConaty mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Buckles was born Sept. 29, 1916, in Denver to Gilbert Lloyd Buckles and Cora Ethel (Mize) Buckles. Robert, or 'Bob' as he was known to friends and family, grew up in the Denver area and was graduated from Wheatridge High School in 1934. He was active in sports, playing on the Wheatridge state runner-up football team of 1933.
Upon graduation from high school, Bob moved to California where he enrolled in college at UCLA for a year. In 1938 he began working for the United States Forest Service in California building trails and working as a lookout for forest fires. Bob also worked in the building construction business in California. Bob was drafted into the Army Dec. 1, 1941, at Long Beach, Calif. He served for years in the Army during World War II as part of the 18th Combat Engineers Company B. Bob was part of the surveying crew who built the Alcan Highway (now called the Alaska Highway). He also served several years in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. It was during his time in the army that he met Travis Thompson, his future brother-in-law who introduced him to his sister, Odelle Thompson of Knox City, Texas.
Bob and Odelle were married Oct. 17, 1945, in Rochester, Texas, following his discharge from the Army on Sept. 28, 1945. After their marriage they moved to Fillmore, Calif., Brownsville and Sutherlin, Ore., and Anchorage, Alaska. Bob was in the construction business at all of these locations. He and Odelle lived a brief time in Meeker in 1948-49 at his cousin Clanton Buckles’ ranch west of Meeker. Bob and Odelle moved to Knox City, Texas, for a period of five years where Bob owned his own construction company and the couple also ran a bowling alley.
Bob and Odelle’s love for Meeker was strong and in 1953 they purchased their ranch on the upper White River and the family moved to Meeker in April 1954. Bob lived the remainder of his life on his ranch. Bob worked as an engineer for the Soil Conservation Service for 22 years, retiring in 1977. He and Odelle were selected as Outstanding Conservationists by the White River Soil Conservation District in 1997. Bob was a member of the White River Community Club, spending many hours working on the building and grounds. He enjoyed the Community Club and all the members very much. Bob loved to hunt and fish. He holds a record in the Boon and Crocket for non-typical mule deer rack with a score of 233 6/8. In the late 1960s he was awarded the certificate of merit, the highest individual award from the American Red Cross for his attempt to save the life of a car wreck victim. He was a member of the Meeker Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughters Linda and her husband Stuart Morgan of Dalton, Neb., Judy and her husband Theron Strickland of Littleton, Colo., and his son David and wife Richelle of Meeker, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one sister Jan Herzog of Brenham, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Odelle, his wife of 56 years, his parents, one brother, one sister and one niece.
A memorial fund has been established for a scholarship for a graduate from Meeker High School for higher education in Bob Buckles’ name. Checks made out to 'Bob Buckles Memorial Fund' can be sent to Linda Morgan, 9720 Road 54, Dalton, Neb., 69131-8212.
Ruth R Ray
April 2, 1906 - January 21, 2003
Ruth R. Ray, 96, died Jan. 21, 2003, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Meeker April 2, 1906. She is a longtime Lamar, Colo., resident and the funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27 at Peacock Chapel in Lamar. Ian Blacker officiated and interment was at Fairmount Cemetery
in Lamar.
Survivors include her children Doris (Ray) Parsons, LeRoy Harrington, Myrtle (Don) Tayloe and Henry Harrington, all of Lamar, and Joyce (Gary) Turner of Okla.
She had 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Ida (Metzger) Baldauf; husband Archie Ray; first Husband William Clifford Harrington; sons William, George and Bob Harrington; her brother George Baldauf and an infant sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Colorado Boys Ranch directly or in care of the funeral home.
Troy H. Pearce
January 19, 1936 - January 27, 2003
Longtime Meeker resident Troy H. Pearce, 67, died Jan. 27, 2003, in Henderson, Nev.
Troy was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Jensen, Utah, the son of James A. and Venice (Haslem) Pearce. In April of 1943 the family moved to Meeker where Troy attended school at both the Mesa School and Coal Creek, later attending Rio Blanco County High School where he was graduated with the class of 1954.
Following his graduation Troy entered the United States Army, serving his country for eight years, returning to Meeker where he owned and operated Pearce Automotive. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed restoring old cars.
Survivors include two sisters, Allene Ingersoll and her husband Bob of Yerington, Nev.; Beth Cooney and her husband Les of Craig; two brothers, Tom Pearce and his wife Ruth and Bob Pearce and his wife Elaine, all of Meeker as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services in Meeker will be held at a later date. Meeker Mortuary has been entrusted with the local arrangements.
David Lee Niles
October 23, 1958 - January 26, 2003
David Lee Niles, 44, of Colorado Springs died Jan. 26, 2003, in Colorado Springs.
David was born Oct. 23, 1958, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver to Donald and Arlene (Crawford) Niles. At the time of his death he was a maintenance technician for School District 11 in Colorado Springs.
In addition to his parents he is survived by one brother, Ken Niles of Calhan and one sister Donna Goodrum of Colorado Springs.
Graveside interment rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 in the Highland Cemetery
of Meeker with The Rev.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Shriners Hospital, the Pikes Peak Council of Boy Scouts of America, the Stem Cell Research Center of University Hospital or the First Lutheran Church of Colorado Springs through Meeker Mortuary which is in care of the local arrangements.
