Jane Willson of Longmont, CO died November 12, 2007 at the Hospice Care Center in Louisville, CO. She was 71.

Jane was born May 8, 1936 in Brussels, Belgium to Homer David and Mary Helen (Elliott) Cogdell. She grew up in Denver where she graduated from East High School. Jane then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she pursued classes in education. Jane married Kenneth M. Willson in Reno, Nevada on July 31, 1956.

Jane was a homemaker who took care of her family and raised three children. She later worked as a secretary for several businesses before she retired five years ago. Jane was very active in community services and with LifeBridge Christian Church where she was a member. She belonged to a quilting club with the church and taught others how to quilt.

Her parents preceded Mrs. Willson in death. She is survived by two sons: David Willson and his wife Diane and Mark Willson of Longmont; a daughter, Cindy Pierce and her husband Doug of Mead, CO; her former husband, Kenneth of Longmont; two grandchildren: Stephanie Gould and her husband Justin and Jacqueline Harris; and by a sister, Carolyn Hoffman of Denver, CO.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16 at Life Bridge Christian Church with David Bradshaw officiating. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary.

Memorial may be given to Centennial Bank of the West Memorial Account for Helen Jane Willson.

Stephen John Liska
Born in Milwaukee, WI on Apr. 3, 1942
Departed on Jan. 13, 2008 and resided in Longmont, CO.

Stephen J. Liska of Longmont, formerly of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died peacefully on, Sunday, January 13, 2008 at his home. He was 65 years old.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Stephen J. Liska, Sr. and Augusta A. Liska (Janis). He is survived by his wife, Roberta C. Liska (Snyder); his brother, Gerald F. Liska, and wife, JoAnn: his sister-in-law, Jean R. Schofield (Snyder); his son, Andrew J. Liska and wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Sally D. Sliger (Liska), and husband, Chris; his five grandchildren, Dustin, Ashley, Michael, Matthew, and Kimberly; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Steve grew up in Milwaukee, and graduated from Messmer High School. He was active in the Catholic Church and was a gymnast with the Slovak Catholic Sokols.

After graduation, Steve joined the United States Air Force where he was able to travel all over the world. His final assignment brought Steve to Denver, Colorado.

In Denver, he met and married Roberta C. Snyder (1965) and they had two children. He had a successful 35-year career with the IBM Corp outside of Boulder, Colorado. He also received a BS degree in Computer Information Systems from Regis University.

Steve was an avid aviation buff and private pilot. He served as an officer in the Civil Air Patrol in both administrative and operational roles. He also continued with his world travels.

Steve was a devoted husband, caring father, loving grandfather, loyal employee, and a friend to anyone he met.

Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services of Longmont has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. A visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Cremation will follow the services, with interment later at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Suite A, Lafayette, CO 80026.

Donna L. Smith
Born in Mondamin, Iowa on Jul. 14, 1924
Departed on Jan. 16, 2008 and resided in Longmont, CO.

Donna L. Smith of Longmont died January 16, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center in Louisville. She was 83.

Donna was born on July 14, 1924 in Mondamin, Iowa to William Bryan and Adelaid Marie (Armstrong) Withem. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Moorhead High School. Donna moved to Longmont in 1961.

Donna worked for Dr. Pfile for a few years and then was a PBX operator for Longmont United Hospital for 27 years retiring at the age of 72. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church since 1961 and was active with the Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Jude Sewing Circle. Donna was also a member of Sigma Phi Sorority. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and sewing and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Donna is survived by Wilfred "Willie" Wilts and his loving family. She is also survived by her daughter, Judy Irwin and her husband Bill of Keystone, CO; three granddaughters: Brooke Franklin and her husband Miles of Denver, Kendra Longbrook and her husband Steve of Longmont and Kimberly Petersen-Sanez and her husband Frank Sanez of Longmont; seven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; three sisters and numerous extended family and friends.

A visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary on Sunday, January 20 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Monday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Brian Morrow as celebrant. Services will conclude at the church.

Margaret Alice Laughlin
Born in Extension, Nebraska on Oct. 1, 1918

Margaret Alice Laughlin

Margaret Alice Laughlin, 89, of Longmont, Colorado, died January 18th, 2008 at Applewood Living Center following a brief illness.

Margaret was born in a dugout on the plains NW Nebraska at the Extension on October 1, 1918 to Phillip and Josephine Jacobs Points. Margaret married Gerald Laughlin on October 6, 1934. After she raised her family, she obtained her GED and went to the University of Northern Colorado graduating in two and a half years with her BA Degree in Education. She taught fourth grade for eight years at Frederick Elementary School. Margaret had collections of angels, bells, dolls, hats, and teddy bears.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald of sixty years, two brothers: Maurice and Wilson Points, a sister Catherine Points, and one grandchild, Beverly Laughlin.

She is survived by a son, Lyle (Ann) Laughlin of Lafayette, a daughter, Geraldine (Roger) Resseguie of Longmont; six grandchildren: James (Beth) Laughlin of Fairbanks, Alaska, Lorie (John) Walter of Lafayette, Lynda (Michael Fleegler) Laughlin of Washington, D.C., Debra (Scott) Bergamo of Longmont, Karen (Mark) Jugert of Arvada, and Janet Resseguie of Longmont; six great grandchildren: Tyler, Angela and Tanner Bergamo, Melissa and Taylor Reese, Sara Laughlin; a brother, Raymond Ponts of Seattle, WA; and many family members and friends.

A cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m, Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Longmont, 1712 Mountain View Avenue with Pastor Ben Liebelt officiating.

Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville, Nebraska at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boulder County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Martha Marie SEVERSON

May 4, 1930 — Nov. 11, 2007

Martha Marie SEVERSON, 77, of Longmont, Colorado died on November 11, 2007, in Longmont, Colorado. She was born May 4, 1930 in St. Francis, Kansas.

Martha graduated from Longmont High School in 1947 and retired from U.S. West after 34 years of service. She most recently worked at the Colorado Call Center in Longmont.

Dearly loved and sadly missed, Martha is survived by her daughters, Joleen K. Terry and husband Bill of Loveland, Colo., Scharleen Citron-Funk and husband Brad of Longmont, and Patricia S. Kramer of Firestone, Colo.; sons William A. Kramer and wife Wendy of Longmont, and Gregory A. Kramer of Longmont. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Dana Juenemann and husband Derrick of Selden, Kansas, Kipp Terry of Lakewood, Colo., Kirk Terry of Loveland, Kimberley VanDyke and husband Shane of Longmont, Sara Price and husband Neal of Longmont, and Ashley Belka of Reno, Nevada; great-grandchildren, Sierra Price, Tristan, Makayla, and Nevaeh VanDyke, all of Longmont; as well as her brother, H. John Kramer Jr. and Mary and their family of Virginia.

A private memorial service and cremation has been conducted. Memorial contributions may be made to Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley, P. O. Box 231, Longmont, CO 80502 or Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Rd #G, Longmont, CO 80501.

Gary 'Slim' SPURLING

Gary 'Slim' SPURLING, age 69, crossed over on November 12, 2007, in his home in Erie, Colorado.

Slim was a remarkable man, who committed his life to restoring the health of the environment and mankind. He began practicing the ancient art of dowsing in 1970 and found a very simple and inexpensive method of neutralizing geopathic stress. Slim was an internationally recognized expert in the art of dowsing; and gave seminars in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South America and South Africa on dowsing and application of the Light-Life™ Technology. His inventions are used worldwide to reduce air pollution, improve the quality of agriculture and peoples lives.

He was loved and respected by the people whose lives he has touched. He will be missed greatly.

His life’s work will continue on through his wife, Katharina Spurling-Kaffl of Bavaria, Germany, and his devoted employees and friends. Other members of Slim’s family include his sister, Narelle McRobbins of Australia; his sons, Jody and Jay Spurling; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Evelyn (Thompson) Spurling.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, November 18, 2007, at Howe Mortuary, Longmont.

Helen BOWN

Aug. 26, 1920 — Nov. 9, 2007

Helen BOWN, 87, formerly of Longmont, passed away November 9, 2007, in Dumas, Texas.

She was born August 26, 1920, in Irvington, Iowa to Armour and Pearl (Kimball) Lemkee. She spent her early years growing up in Irvington, on a family farm. She was one of eight children born to Armour and Pearl.

Helen married F. Wayne Bown on December 24, 1942, in Algona, Iowa. They spent most of the next 30 years living in Kimball, Nebraska. Wayne and Helen moved to Longmont in 1973 from Kimball and she moved to Dumas, Texas in 2007.

Helen worked for the United Bank of Boulder until her retirement.

She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. In the 60s and 70s Wayne and Helen enjoyed square dancing. In the latter years they enjoyed playing cards, especially playing bridge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, on January 16, 2003.

Helen is survived by two sons, Bruce Bown and his wife Kathy of Aurora, CO and Lyle Bown and his wife Jackie of Scottsdale, AZ.; one daughter, Lynne Kay Slagle of Dumas, Texas; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will be Monday, November 19, 2007, in Algona, Iowa. In accordance to her wishes, cremation has already taken place. Contributions may be made to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Ann W. GRIEVE

Oct. 8, 1920 — Nov. 10, 2007

Ann W. GRIEVE, 87, of Vernon, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 10, 2007.

She was the beloved wife of Floyd Grieve. Born in Fargo, N.D., on October 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Charles and Estelle (Weeks) Wiebke.

Besides her loving husband, she leaves her children, Richard and Diana Grieve, and Patricia and Jack Godfrey, with whom she made her home; eight grandchildren, Kendra Grieve, Stacey Godfrey, Christy and Mike Woolley, Allison and Ben Marchand, Kevin Grieve, Jessie Kazinksi, Kim and Jason Davis, and Jon Godfrey; and six great-grandchildren, Brett and J.J. Davis, Maria and Anna Woolley, and Gabrielle and Colton Marchand.

A celebration of Ann’s life will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Newkirk and Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Hugh M. CHANCE

June 10, 1919 — Nov. 13, 2007

Hugh M. CHANCE of Arvada, formerly of Longmont, died November 13, 2007, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Westminster. He was 88.

Hugh was born June 10, 1919, in Atwood, Kansas to Levi and Viola (Baker) Chance.

He attended Ft. Hays State College in Kansas where he learned to fly airplanes in the Civilian Pilot Training Program. He was a civilian instructor for the ArmyAir Corp from March 1942 until May 1943, when he was hired by United Air Lines.

Hugh married Lois Sawdey on February 13, 1942, in Denver.

Hugh and Lois purchased a 160 acre farm west of Longmont in 1958. They returned to Arvada in 1992.

Hugh was an airline pilot for United Airlines from 1943-1979, retiring as captain on the Boeing 747.

He was a charter member of Community Baptist Church of Arvada and attended Calvary Church in Longmont.

Hugh was the chairman of the Airline Pilots Association. He was also a Republican State Senator for one term and very active in the Colorado Republican Party. Hugh also enjoyed horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife Lois of Arvada; two sons, Duane Chance and his wife Carol of Denton, Texas and Hugh Chance, Jr. and his wife Joyce of Arvada; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service 1:30 p.m. today, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Private Interment at Mizpah Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2007, at Center Point Community Church at 6245 Garrison St. Arvada, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Church in Longmont or to Community Baptist Church of Arvada and sent to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.

ROPTE, Wilma J.

ROPTE, Wilma J., 84, of Longmont passed away Nov. 13, 2007, at Berthoud Living Center. Memorial service 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Peterson officiating. Cremation at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
