Herbert Allen KELLY

Herbert Allen KELLY 72, of Longmont died Feb. 27, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Allen was a gentle man who lost a well-fought, 13-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He was born in Huron, S.D., on Feb. 21, 1935, to Herbert Alexander Kelly and Marian Koehne Kelly.
Allen graduated from Sioux Falls High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1953. He earned a bachelor of science in geological engineering and a master’s degree in mining engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1959.
He met his beloved wife and best friend, Kay D. Klein, on a blind date. They first met in front of the Rapid City, S.D., public library. She was a perfect match to his keen intellect and sharp wit. It was easy for him to recognize her; she was standing in front of the library with a cello. Thus began a 50-year romance. They were married June 18, 1959, in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City.
Allen’s work as a mining engineer brought his family all over the world. His career began in South America, first with the Cerro de Pasco Mining Co. in Peru and later in Sewell, Chile, with Braden Copper Co.
In 1965, Allen and his family returned to the United States where he became the general mine foreman of the Homestake Mining Co. in Lead, S.D. At the time, this was the largest underground gold and silver mine in the U.S.
In 1971, the family moved to Creede, where Allen was the general manager of the Bulldog Mountain Silver Mine. He was also a large presence in Eagle County, where he served as the last manager of New Jersey Zinc Co.’s lead, zinc, gold and silver mining operations and oversaw the daily management of the town of Gilman.
After most mining operations at Gilman ended, Allen and his family moved to southwest Virginia, where he was general manager of New Jersey Zinc’s mining operations at Austinville.
After retiring from mining, Allen went back to school at Wytheville Community College in Wytheville, Va., to become a medical laboratory technician. He worked in the medical field at Lewis Gale Clinic in Salem, Va., for nearly a decade before formally retiring to build a home in Spearfish, S.D. He volunteered as a census worker in Virginia and was a member of the Mining and Metallurgical Association.
Allen was a stamp collector and a member of the Longmont Stampers. He maintained a collection of geological specimens from around the world. He was a master tinkerer, a builder and an amazing gardener. Every garden he ever had was ringed by drifts of colorful zinnias.
He loved music, puzzles and reading history. He enjoyed learning throughout his life. His family and friends enjoyed the clever letters that he wrote on a 1957 Smith Corona typewriter.
A man of the earth, he always smelled of fresh soil, unsmoked tobacco and Doublemint gum. He had sparkling green eyes, a killer smile and a keen wit. He was so tall that his children, when they were small, believed he was a giant. His height made him an excellent basketball player. He loved the Denver Broncos and his big, red Dodge truck. He was enthralled by his son’s beehives and got a real kick out of his dogs, Max and Murphy. He loved to travel, especially to historical sites, which his children referred to as 'hysterical' sites. He also enjoyed sharing stories about his grandparents’ farm in Claremont, S.D.
Although the last months of his life were made especially difficult by Parkinson’s, he still was able to spend time with his beloved grandsons, building puzzles and looking at his rock collection. During that time, he also completed his personal memoirs.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maribeth Kelly.
He is survived by his loving wife Kay, and their five children, Heather Collins and husband Andy of Walpole, N.H.; Ross Kelly and fiancée Ellen DeHaven of Moneta, Va.; Bret Kelly and wife Sarah of Christiansburg, Va.; Holly Cignarale and husband Joe of Greer, S.C.; and Dan Kelly of Kodiak, Alaska; six grandchildren, Will and Jay Collins, Katy Kelly, and Noah, Benjamin and Quinn Cignarale; his father-in-law, Richard Klein; his brother-in-law, Gary Klein; and his sisters-in-law, Connie Lehman of Longmont and Danna Garel of Sacramento, Calif.
A private family service will be held.

CASTANEDA, Maria
CASTANEDA, Maria, 59, of Longmont died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at Longmont United Hospital. A vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Howe Mortuary Chapel in Longmont. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder with Father Daniel Principe as celebrant. Burial will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
Harold Wayne GRIM
Harold Wayne GRIM, 68, of Longmont went to be with the Lord on October 16, 2007. He died at HospiceCare Center in Louisville after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born August 11, 1939, in Coon Rapids, Iowa, to Harold and Ruth (Earhart) Grim.
He served in the United States Air Force from October of 1960 to October of 1968. During that time he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. Later, he was employed by Formby Ford until September 2007.
On December 10, 1960, he married the love of his life, Donna Haubrich in Dedham, Iowa. They were happily married for over 46 years and together had 4 children: Debbie, Kristie, Kevin and Jeff.
Wayne was an active member of LifeBridge Christian Church. He loved the Lord with all his heart and was baptized with his wife, youngest son, and son-in-law in early 2000. For the remainder of his life he served the Lord faithfully.
He loved playing golf with his wife and spent many weekends on a golf course; his favorites included Mariana Butte and Indian Peaks. He also loved fishing on Mary’s Lake in Estes Park. He treasured God’s country and never took for granted its splendor. Although he enjoyed many things, the love he had for his family surpassed all else. Time spent gathered together on holidays and special events brought him exceeding joy.
Preceding him in death were: his mother and father, his sister, Karen Grim, and his son-in-law, Gary Rosenbaum.
Surviving family are: his wife Donna, his daughters Debbie Rosenbaum and Kristie Hopp with husband Craig, his sons Kevin Grim with wife Kristin, and Jeff Grim with wife Jennifer. His grandchildren: Brad Rosenbaum with wife Jennifer, Nicole Morrow with husband Bryan, Tami, Tifani, Tracie and Tonia Hopp, Tim, Troy, Josh and Shelby Grim, and Samuel and Hannah Grim. He was also survived by a sister, Donna Steele with husband Jim.
A memorial service will be held on October 22, 2007 at 10:00 a.m., at LifeBridge Christian Church. Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services of Longmont is handling arrangements.

Margaret Cercone, 94, of Frederick, Colorado, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Longmont United Hospital.
Born May 8, 1913 in Denver, Colorado, to Rosario and Filomena (DiSantis) Romano, Margaret graduated from high school in Brighton. On March 3, 1929, Margaret married Damiano Cercone in Frederick. The couple made their home in Frederick where Damiano worked in the coalmines and later for the City of Thornton.
Mrs. Cercone was an active member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister for many years. Margaret spent many hours in her garden, growing beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables. She also enjoyed dancing, knitting, and crocheting. But most important was her unconditional love for her family. She adored her children, grandchildren and their families, and cherished meals and time spent with them.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1980; a daughter, Thelma Romano; a grandson, Rocky Rossetti; a son-in-law, Vincent Rossetti; and three sisters, Mary, Carmella, and Juliette.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Betty Rossetti of Westminster; her son, Larry Cercone of Frederick; seven grandchildren, Kathy (Fred) Lombardi, Rick (Patty) Romano, Vicki (Steve) Waltz, Ingrid (TJ) Holston, Alex Cercone, Charles Gallagher and Sam Gallagher; eight great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. Margaret is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and by extended family and friends.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Frederick on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at St. Theresa's with entombment to follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. In honor of Margaret's wishes, no public visitation is planned and the casket will be closed. Howe Mortuary, Longmont, is handling arrangements.

Margaret Alice Laughlin

Margaret Alice Laughlin, 89, of Longmont, Colorado, died January 18th, 2008 at Applewood Living Center following a brief illness.
Margaret was born in a dugout on the plains NW Nebraska at the Extension on October 1, 1918 to Phillip and Josephine Jacobs Points. Margaret married Gerald Laughlin on October 6, 1934. After she raised her family, she obtained her GED and went to the University of Northern Colorado graduating in two and a half years with her BA Degree in Education. She taught fourth grade for eight years at Frederick Elementary School. Margaret had collections of angels, bells, dolls, hats, and teddy bears.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald of sixty years, two brothers: Maurice and Wilson Points, a sister Catherine Points, and one grandchild, Beverly Laughlin.
She is survived by a son, Lyle (Ann) Laughlin of Lafayette, a daughter, Geraldine (Roger) Resseguie of Longmont; six grandchildren: James (Beth) Laughlin of Fairbanks, Alaska, Lorie (John) Walter of Lafayette, Lynda (Michael Fleegler) Laughlin of Washington, D.C., Debra (Scott) Bergamo of Longmont, Karen (Mark) Jugert of Arvada, and Janet Resseguie of Longmont; six great grandchildren: Tyler, Angela and Tanner Bergamo, Melissa and Taylor Reese, Sara Laughlin; a brother, Raymond Ponts of Seattle, WA; and many family members and friends.
A cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m, Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Longmont, 1712 Mountain View Avenue with Pastor Ben Liebelt officiating.
Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery
in Rushville, Nebraska at a later date.

Donna L. Smith

Donna L. Smith of Longmont died January 16, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center in Louisville. She was 83.
Donna was born on July 14, 1924 in Mondamin, Iowa to William Bryan and Adelaid Marie (Armstrong) Withem. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Moorhead High School. Donna moved to Longmont in 1961.
Donna worked for Dr. Pfile for a few years and then was a PBX operator for Longmont United Hospital for 27 years retiring at the age of 72. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church since 1961 and was active with the Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Jude Sewing Circle. Donna was also a member of Sigma Phi Sorority. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and sewing and loved spending time with her family and friends.
Donna is survived by Wilfred "Willie" Wilts and his loving family. She is also survived by her daughter, Judy Irwin and her husband Bill of Keystone, CO; three granddaughters: Brooke Franklin and her husband Miles of Denver, Kendra Longbrook and her husband Steve of Longmont and Kimberly Petersen-Sanez and her husband Frank Sanez of Longmont; seven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; three sisters and numerous extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary on Sunday, January 20 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Monday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Brian Morrow as celebrant. Services will conclude at the church.

Francis €śFrank€? Joseph Soucie was born at the home of a nearby nurse during a spring snowstorm on March 24, 1931 in Iliff, Colorado, the first born to Sylvester and Rita (Boudreau) Soucie. He attended a country schoolhouse in the farming community of Proctor, spent two years at Longmont High, then graduated from St. Patrick€™s Academy in Sydney, Nebraska in 1949. While attending Holy Cross Abbey College in Canyon City, he was drafted and served in the Navy from 1951-1955 on the LST 887. Besides his duties in fire control and electronics, he became the ship€™s cameraman, and enjoyed showing 16mm films at ship€™s reunions for many years to come. He married Freda Ciccarelli of Frederick, on August 3, 1952, and they celebrated 52 years and 5 children together, before her passing in 2005. He graduated from CU in 1959 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. The US Aerospace Program needed his skills and he tested engines for the Titan, Saturn, and Apollo space programs while working for Martin (Marietta), Rockwell, and Rocketdyne over a span of 17 years. After working another 14 years at Rocky Flats, he retired in 1990. He actually leaped out of his chair as he watched the Apollo astronauts lift off of the moon in 1969 in the engine he had so diligently tested. This was a crowning achievement in the career of a man who enjoyed his work and was gifted with precision and detail. However, in the whole fabric of life, his greatest satisfaction came from encouraging his wife and children to be successful and productive by helping them to achieve their dreams. As his heart weakened, he rediscovered the forgotten hobby of playing cards. Nothing could kindle his old intensity like a good competitive game of Hand and Foot. The card club, consisting of his mother, sister and special friend, Judy, provided many hours of laughter and companionship during the past few years. With his characteristic hospitality, Frank passed from this life on January 14th, 2008 at his Boulder home after an exhausting day of shopping in preparation for hosting his grandsons€™ skiing vacation. We love you Dad and will see you and Mom again when our work here is done.
Frank is survived by his mother, Rita Soucie of Longmont, his brother Robert Soucie of Denver, and his sister Eunice Hinson of Texas. He is also survived by his five children: Cynthia O€™Donnell of Maine, Jeanie Davis of Florida, Dayna Wise of Thornton, John Soucie of Niwot, and Michael Soucie of Boulder. Also thriving are his 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, whom he lovingly referred to as his €śrewards€?.
A time of visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary in Longmont on Monday, January 21, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

Stephen J. Liska of Longmont, formerly of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died peacefully on, Sunday, January 13, 2008 at his home. He was 65 years old.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Stephen J. Liska, Sr. and Augusta A. Liska (Janis). He is survived by his wife, Roberta C. Liska (Snyder); his brother, Gerald F. Liska, and wife, JoAnn: his sister-in-law, Jean R. Schofield (Snyder); his son, Andrew J. Liska and wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Sally D. Sliger (Liska), and husband, Chris; his five grandchildren, Dustin, Ashley, Michael, Matthew, and Kimberly; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Steve grew up in Milwaukee, and graduated from Messmer High School. He was active in the Catholic Church and was a gymnast with the Slovak Catholic Sokols.
After graduation, Steve joined the United States Air Force where he was able to travel all over the world. His final assignment brought Steve to Denver, Colorado.
In Denver, he met and married Roberta C. Snyder (1965) and they had two children. He had a successful 35-year career with the IBM Corp outside of Boulder, Colorado. He also received a BS degree in Computer Information Systems from Regis University.
Steve was an avid aviation buff and private pilot. He served as an officer in the Civil Air Patrol in both administrative and operational roles. He also continued with his world travels.
Steve was a devoted husband, caring father, loving grandfather, loyal employee, and a friend to anyone he met.
Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services of Longmont has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. A visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Cremation will follow the services, with interment later at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver.

Robert M. Spruiell

Robert M. Spruiell, 90, of Longmont, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Applewood Living Center in Longmont.
Robert was born June 14, 1917 in Jefferson County, Alabama, to William Robert and Mary (Franklin) Spruiell. His family moved to Colorado in 1929. Robert served in the United States Army during WWII where he saw combat in the South Pacific Theatre.
On December 18, 1946, Robert married Gina Bouwman in Longmont. She died in 1984. He later married Georgeann Templeman on June 11, 1987. She died in 2000.
He was involved in the farming business in the Haystack area near Niwot for many years where he raised crops and had a dairy operation. He retired in 1975. Robert was a member of the Altona Grange and of the Longmont Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and traveling, visiting many places in Australia and Europe. Robert was also an avid Bronco fan. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Robert is survived by a son, John D. Spruiell and his wife, Melinda, of Frederick, CO; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Spruiell of Rio Vista, CA; a brother, Jack Spruiell of San Jose, CA; five grandchildren: Jonna, Michael, Amy, Erik, and Lance; and three great grandchildren.
In addition to his wives, Mr. Spruiell was preceded in death by a son, Robert E. Spruiell in 2005; one brother; four sisters; and a grandson, Shawn Spruiell.
Visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary, Longmont, on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Howe Mortuary on Wednesday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m. with Chaplin Anthony Benevidez of Agape Hospice officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Foothills Gardens of Memory.
Forrest David Cordova

Forrest Cordova, formerly of Longmont, Colorado, died July 25, 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 78 years old.
Mr. Cordova was born on September 30, 1928 in Model, Colorado, to Antonio Elias Cordova and Geraldine Lavina Coy.
On December 22, 1949 he married Joy Jean Garber in Trinidad, Colorado. The couple moved to Boulder County, where Forrest worked as a farm hand on farms in Louisville and what is now downtown Broomfield. In 1955, he moved to Longmont going to work for Gould Battery, Diamond Shamrock, and various construction companies building homes and gas stations throughout Colorado and Wyoming. He was a machinist for Head Ski Company, before going to work as a general contractor with the F.A.A.’s Field Maintenance Program in 1975. While with the F.A.A., he transferred to Casper, WY, Salt Lake City, UT, Vancouver, WA, Denver, before finally returning to North Salt Lake City, UT in 1988.
While in Longmont, Forrest was an avid outdoorsman and loved hiking, hunting, fishing, and boating.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Longmont. He also worked with the Boy Scouts as a Scout Master.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy, on October 1, 2000.
He is survived by three sons, Ernest (Karen) Cordova of Littleton, CO, Ivan Cordova of Northglenn, CO, and Forrest D. (Rose) Cordova of Salt Lake City, UT; a daughter, Linda Miller of Berthoud, CO; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ted (Betty) Cordova of Espanola, NM, and John (Jane) Cordova Indianapolis, IN; and three sisters, Dolores Baca of Pueblo, CO, Judy Medina of LaJunta, CO, and Donna (Bill) Flectsteiner of Lakewood, CO.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel, with Retired Lutheran Minister David Peters officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to service time at the Mortuary. Interment will follow at the Foothills Gardens of Memory.
