Vivian M.“Suzy” Hixson
August 4, 1922 - April 3, 2004
DELTA - Delta resident Vivian “Suzy” Hixson, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at her residence. She was 81.
A memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 9th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Darrel Johnson will preside. Services will be performed by members of Order of Eastern Star Garnet Chapter #39. Services will conclude at the chapel. A private inurnment will take place at Delta City Cemetery.
Vivian M. “Suzy” McWilliams was born on August 4, 1922, on a homestead near Aztec, New Mexico, to the late Dell and Bertha (Boyce) McWilliams. She spent her childhood and attended grade school in Aztec and graduated from Durango High School in Durango, Colorado in 1940.
Suzy worked in a flower shop until she met and married David Hixson on November 30, 1941 at Reno, Nevada. They resided in Sacramento, California until David joined the Navy in April of 1942. They then lived in San Diego and she worked as the “Rivator” at Rohr Aircraft until 1943. David shipped out in March of that year and Suzy returned to Durango where their daughter L’Jeanne was born. After David’s overseas duty the family lived in Hutchinson, Kansas and Jacksonville, Florida. In 1945, they returned to Colorado and lived in Dove Creek where she worked for the Dove Creek Press for seven years. She also worked as the District Court Clerk. In 1960, they moved to Delta where they owned and operated the Texaco Bulk Plant and Service Station. After closing the station, she was employed at Skyland Foods for nine years. David preceded her in death on April 5, 1995.
Suzy was a member and past matron of the Garnet Chapter Order of Eastern Star #39. She was also a member of the Delta United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three grandsons, Boyd Johnson and wife Connie of Detroit Lake, MN, Darrel Johnson of Mesa, AZ and Dell Johnson and wife Lynette of Delta. She is further survived by six great grandchildren: Olivia and Nathan Johnson of Detroit Lakes, MN, Cassie and Bryce Johnson of Mesa, AZ, and Emily and Derrek Johnson of Delta.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, L’Jeanne Johnson on May 29, 1976, her great grandson, Evan Johnson on June 11, 2003 and 5 brothers.

Martha P. Savage
January 1, 1910 - April 1, 2004
CRAWFORD - Lifetime Paonia resident, Martha P. Savage, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2004, at Paonia Care and Rehab Center in Paonia, Colorado. She was 94.
A memorial service will be held at the Crawford United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2004, with James Gall officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery
near the church.
Martha Phoebe Savage was born on January 1st in Hamburg, Arkansas, a New Year’s gift in 1910, to Leslie J. and Sallie L. Savage. At the age of six, she traveled with her family to Western Colorado where they initially resided in a log cabin on Crystal Creek. In 1918, the family moved to Crawford and in 1924, into the residence that would become known as the Savage family home until 1998.
Following graduation from Crawford High School, Martha attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado and graduated in 1931 with a degree in Education. She later obtained a certificate in Administration from Northwestern University. Her career as an ardent advocate of education, spanned almost four decades, beginning as an English teacher in a one - room school in Hopper, Colorado, holding the position as principal of the Hotchkiss High School and ending thirty - six years later as the Delta County Superintendent of Schools, a position she had held for twenty - seven years.
During the time she served as Superintendent of Schools, she reorganized the school district to encompass Delta, Gunnison, Montrose and Mesa counties. Prior to being elected to that position, she taught English literature in Hotchkiss for seven years. After retiring in 1967, she returned to the family home in Crawford to care for her aging parents.
Martha loved children. Her home, known for the Savage Bell Towers, served as a gathering place for the ringing of the bells on holidays and special occasions. Later, she and her sisters donated these bell towers to the Delta County Historical Museum where they still can be seen and heard. Martha also expressed her love of music through her beautiful voice. She was active in various music organizations to include singing with the women’s choral group at Western State College and later as the requested singer at many local events.
Martha had a passion for reading and volunteered many hours with the Crawford Community Library. She was an active member of the Crawford United Methodist Church, served as the Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and was Crawford’s Pioneer Queen in 1982 and Marshall of the Delta County parade in August of 1991. In 1988, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Western State College. She was a life - long Democrat and in 1940, accompanied her father to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, when he was a delegate. Since 1998, she has resided at the Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center in Paonia. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie J. and Sallie L. Savage; her two sister and their husbands: Annie Laura and Harold Richardson, and Leslie Janie and Fred E. Hagie.
She is survived by by two nieces and one nephew: Sallie Haugh of Scottsdale, AZ, Jerene Jex and husband Earl of Bloomington, MN, and Leslie Hagie and wife Marilyn of Shoreview, MN. She is further survived by four great - nieces, Markeah Jex and Traci Hagie of Denver, CO, Dasha Jex of Fremont, CA, and Niesha Stidger of Eden Prairie, MN; one great - nephew, Kevin Hagie of Charlottesville, VA; and a great - great - niece, Annika Backlund of Eden Prairie, MN.
Martha was a symbol of strength and perseverance in pursuit of quality education and will be remembered fondly and with gratitude by the many men and women whose lives she touched, encouraged and influenced in their quest for knowledge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Martha Savage Memorial Fund at Western State College Foundation, P.O. Box 1264, Gunnison, CO 81230.

Frances E. Jacobs
December 31, 1921 - April 2, 2004
OLATHE - Lifetime resident of Olathe, Colorado, Frances E. Jacobs, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at her home. She was 82.
A graveside memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 7th at the Olathe Cemetery. Pastor John Mocko will preside.
Frances E. Goddard was born on December 31, 1921, in Olathe, Colorado, to the late Bertram C. and Lois Alta (Mattsen) Goddard. She graduated from Olathe High School in 1939.
On March 7, 1942, in Raton, New Mexico, Frances was joined in marriage to Samuel Jacobs. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1991, in Olathe.
Prior to retirement in 1976, Frances had been a postal clerk in Olathe for over 20 years, retiring as Post Master. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Olathe. Frances was a past State President of the Postal Workers Union and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Her interests included playing gin rummy and bridge. However, above all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her faithful dog, “Wee Wee”.
Survivors include three daughters: Janis Jacobs of Creede, CO, Patricia Campbell of Delta, CO, and Kristi Anne Fix and husband Steven of Las Vegas, NV. She is further survived by four grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Fredrick Goddard and a sister, Mary Smith.

Rex Edward Ackerman
January 18, 1943 - March 31, 2004
CRAWFORD - Rex Ackerman, a resident of Crawford, Colorado for the past four and a half months, died on March 31, 2004, at his residence. He was 61.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Cedar Hill Cemetery
in Paonia, Colorado, with James Gall officiating.
Rex Edward Ackerman was born on January 18, 1943, to Edward and Harolyn (Rice) Ackerman in Independence County, Arkansas. He spent his childhood in Lyons, Colorado, and graduated from high school in Mount Miguel, California, in 1961. He continued his education at San Diego State College in San Diego, California. Before moving to Crawford, Rex lived for a period of five years in Morton, Washington. Prior to that he resided in California for many years.
Rex worked for the United States Postal service for twenty - nine years before retiring in 1998. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and computers.
Those grateful to have shared in Rex’s life include his sister, Carol Nations of Crawford, CO; three uncles; two aunts; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill Werth
August 15, 1916 - April 1, 2004
CRAWFORD - Crawford resident, William “Bill” Werth, died on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the Paonia Care and Rehab Center in Paonia, Colorado. He was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado, with James Gall officiating. Services will conclude at the Chapel.
William Matt Werth was born on August 15, 1916, to Matt and Louisa (Berkmeier) Werth in Seattle, Washington. He spent his childhood in Seattle and graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California. He and his wife moved to Delta County, from California, in 1992.
Bill married Evangeline Hunt on March 26, 1947, in Glendale, California. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2003, in Crawford, Colorado.
Mr. Werth was an airplane mechanic and worked on jet aircrafts until he retired in the 1970’s. He served in the United States Army Air Corp. Among Bill’s many interests were golfing, fishing, camping, and traveling. They also enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, Arizona.
Those grateful to have shared in Bill’s life include his daughter, Marsha Werth of Crawford, CO; a daughter - in - law, Linda Werth of Bozeman, MT; and a brother, Richard Werth and his wife Ruth of Arizona. He is further survived by six grandchildren: Jennifer Palecki of Crawford, CO, Chris Palecki and his wife Danielle of Crawford, CO, Vicki Beiriger and her husband Edward of Crawford, CO, Jon Palecki of Maryland Heights, MO, Shauna Werth of Bozeman, MT, and Matt Werth and his wife Jenny of Alexandria, VA; and eight great - grandchildren: Nathan, Shauntell, Leah, Christa, Ryan, Alyssa, and Jacob all of Crawford, CO, and Sidney of Alexandria, VA.

Lila Goettelman
February 11, 1912 - June 13, 2004
OGDEN - Lila Goettelman, 92, died on Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Ogden, Utah.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the Delta City Cemetery
in Delta, Colorado, with Pastor Eric Ellis officiating.
Lila was born on February 11, 1912, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, to William Karr and Ruby Kathryn (Jackson) Campbell. She had two older sisters, Thelma and Willie Maurine. Her family left Oklahoma to move to Winnet, Montana, where they resided for a short time. Before she finished elementary school, she moved to a small farm in Fruita, Colorado. Lila attended Fruita Monument High School, graduating in 1930. After completing high school, she attended nursing school in Denver, Colorado. Following her completion of nursing school, she returned to Fruita where she met and later married Johnny Olerain in 1934.
They moved to Bingham, Utah, where Johnny worked in the mines. In May of 1937, they had a son, John William Olearain, nicknamed, “Jack.” In 1939, they moved to Ridgeway, Colorado. In 1944, the family again moved, this time to Montrose, Colorado. In 1950, Lila and Johnny were divorced. A year later, Lila met Albert Guy Goettelman and they were married in 1951. They made their home in Delta, Colorado. Guy preceded her in death in 1994. Lila continued to live in Delta until 2002, when she moved to the Ogden area.
Surviving are one son, Jack Olearain of South Ogden, UT; two grandsons: Jon Olearain of Bothell, WA and Jay Olearain of Boise, ID; four great - grandchildren: Christopher, Nicholas, Andre, and Ally; and one sister, Maurine Winbourn of Ogden, UT.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; her parents; and an older sister, Thelma.

Maurine F. Wilson
December 22, 1948 - July 22, 2004
HOTCHKISS - Hotchkiss resident, Maurine Wilson passed away at her parents home in Delta on Thursday, July 22, 2004. She was 55.
A Communion Service will be held on Monday, July 26th at 10:00 a.m., at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Delta. The Rev. John Muller, Jr. will preside. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 26th at the Delta City Cemetery.
Maurine Frances Wilson was born on December 22, 1948 to David and Marguerite (Ayo) Wilson in Houma, Louisiana. She spent her childhood in Morgan City, LA and graduated from Morgan City High School in 1966. Maurine had been a resident of Morgan City, LA; Lakewood, CO; Hotchkiss, CO; and Delta County.
Maurine was a housekeeper, a vet assistant and loved photography. She enjoyed ceramics, mountain climbing, taking care of animals, horseback riding, and taking pictures of wildlife. She loved Colorado. Maurine was a member of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Delta and a member of the North Fork Shutterbug Camera Club.
Those grateful to have shared in Maurine’s life are her parents, David and Marguerite Wilson of Delta, CO; two brothers, Dale Wilson of Delta, CO; and Glenn David Wilson and wife Gail of Austin, CO. Maurine is further survived by niece April Gail Wilson and friend William Faulkner.

Edith A. Bettis
November 16, 1927 - July 24, 2004
OLATHE - Longtime resident of Olathe, Colorado, Edith A. Bettis, 76, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta.
A visitation will be held for family and friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel on Thursday, July 29, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 29th,, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with James Gall officiating. Burial will follow at the Olathe Cemetery.
Edith Aileen Reynolds was born on November 16, 1927, to Martin and Dovie (Smith) Reynolds at Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Steamboat Springs and graduated from high school there. She furthered her education at Mesa College for two years taking accounting classes and graduating from there. Edith lived in Montrose before moving to Olathe twenty years ago.
Edith married Willis Harrison Bettis on December 25, 1951, at the Congregational Church in Grand Junction, Colorado. His work as a pipe - fitter took him from coast to coast and Edith would always travel with him. They liked to take their boat and go fishing in the ocean or lakes whenever they could. They had celebrated over fifty two - years of marriage together. Willis survives.
Edith worked in accounting, but her greatest love was being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Royal Neighbors of America, where she had served as an oracle for one year. Edith loved her animals and each one of her many cows had their own special name. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, needle point, stained glass, and after taking painting classes, accomplished several pieces of art work. Each fall, Edith took great pleasure in canning fruits and vegetables for her family. She was known throughout the area for her fantastic cakes and decorating abilities, including beautiful wedding cakes.
Those grateful to have shared in Edith’s life include her husband Willis Bettis of Olathe, CO; two sons: Mike Bettis and his wife Debra of Delta, UT, and Richard Bettis and his wife Janell of Glendale, AZ. She is further survived by six grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and two brothers.

Lucile Louissa Titus
May 31, 1912 - July 22, 2004
MONTROSE - Former Longtime Delta County resident, Lucile L. Titus went to be with her heavenly father on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose. She was 92.
A visitation for family and friends is planned for Monday, July 26th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 26th at the First Assembly of God in Delta. Pastors Lee Ponder, Don Farmer and Buddy Bishop will preside. Interment will follow at the Cory Cemetery
in Cory, Colorado.
Lucile Louissa Hickman was born on May 31, 1912 in Greensburg, Kansas to the late Grover Ortan and Maude I. (Tice) Hickman. She spent her childhood and attended schools in Kansas.
On August 22, 1937 in Sharon, Kansas Lucile married Ben A. Titus. To this union were born one son and four daughters. In 1939, she and Ben moved to Delta County, Colorado. They resided in Paonia, Hotchkiss, Somerset and Delta. Ben preceded her in death on May 12, 1990 in Delta.
Lucile was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Delta. Her church was her first priority. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, working in the church nursery and sewing. She was known as “The Little Missionary” of Valley Manor, where she was partly responsible for the development of the Chapel.
Survivors include one son, Virgil Lee Titus and wife Lavon of Grand Junction; four daughters, Virginia Maxine Davis and husband Ivan of Olathe; Ruth Geneva Angerhofer and husband Duane “Dewey” of Edgemont, SD; Thelma Lorena Archuleta and husband Eluid “Louis” of West Valley City, UT; and Stella Dolores Trujillo and husband Frank of Greeley, CO; and one sister, Roberta Erma Coburn and husband Warren of Stockton, CA; She is further survived by 9 grandchildren, several step grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
