HUNTER

A memorial service for Darrell “Fish” Hunter will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at the La Junta City Park south gazebo.

All family and friends are welcome.

Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MONROE

A memorial service for Tom Monroe, formerly of La Junta, will be held June 28 in Fort Morgan.

Mr. Monroe died May 27, 2008.

He graduated from La Junta High School in 1964 and worked as a ranch hand until moving to Fort Morgan in 1971 where he worked in the oil field until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife Cathy, daughters Francie Herman, Recie Fontaine, Kathryn Hughes, brothers Jeff and Larry Monroe, sister Bette Hunt, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews and sister-in-law and friend Jane Crow.

He was preceded in death by his parents Buddy and June Monroe, first wife Jean Herron, and daughter Kelly Monroe.

SIMMONS

Funeral services for Richard W. “Dick” Simmons, 81, of rural La Junta will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at the First Methodist Church in Las Animas.

Burial will be in the Simla Cemetery at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Simmons died May 31, 2008, in Las Animas.

He was born Nov. 16 1926, in Loveland to Grey R. and Nellie King Simmons.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Ileen Beaman on Jan. 1, 1948, in Raton, N.M.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II on the USS Sherbourne, he was in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender.

After the war he returned to Ramah, married and ranched.

He also worked as a lineman for Fori Construction Co. traveling with his young family through Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and Oklahoma.

In the early 1950s they purchased a ranch east of Calhan and worked there until he moved the family to the ranch at Higbee, south of La Junta.

He worked for Arkansas Valley COOP as a propane driver, retiring in 1988. Dick and Dorothy sold their ranch to son Rich in 2001.

He enjoyed going to local auction barns, eating lunch and visiting with friends.

He was a member of La Junta and Calhan FFA advisory boards, spent several years as a 4-H leader.

He was voted outstanding young farmer in El Paso County by the chamber of commerce.

He was a past director and president of Higbee Telephone Company and Ninemile Canal Company, as well as a member of the El Paso County ASCS committee; charter president of Pikes Peak COOP and was awarded the family of the year award by the La Junta Chamber of Commerce in 2001.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of the La Junta home; sons Rich (Joanna) Simmons of La Junta, Jerry (Cindy) Simmons of Friona, Texas, Chuck (Sonya) Simmons of Rocky Ford, Bryan (Janet) Simmons of Las Animas and Scott (Lisa) Simmons of Roggen; daughter Kathie (Tommy) Blasingame of Ramah; sister Ruth Kelley of Ramah; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Simmons and sister Margaret.

Memorials can be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice Organization.

Horber Funeral Home in Las Animas is in charge of arrangements.

TRUJILLO

Joe L. Trujillo, 49, of La Junta, entered into rest on June 1, 2008 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.

Services are pending through Johnson-Romero Funeral Home.

YOUNG

Geneva Catherine Young, 85, of La Junta, passed away June 2, 2008 in Pueblo.

Arrangements are pending at Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home.

BRUL

Funeral services for Eva M. Brul, 98, will be held at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Tony Bolen officiating.

Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Brul died June 17, 2008, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Nursing Care Center.

She was born on May 21, 1910 in La Junta to George and Maude R. (Bonnell) Cook.

She married Hugo R. Brul in 1936 in La Junta, and they had been married for 57 years.

He preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1993.

She was a graduate from La Junta High School class of 1928.

She worked for several years at Montgomery Ward and she also worked at the Santa Fe Depot in the News Stand for many years.

She is survived by her sons Don (Nancy) Brul of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Charles Brul of La Junta; granddaughter Angela (Carlos) Castaneda of Albuquerque, N.M.; great-grandsons Bradford and Nathanael Castaneda of Albuquerque, nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Maude Cook; husband Hugo R. Brul and her five brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice Association, P.O. Box 408, La Junta, CO, 81050 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 455 Sherman Street, Denver, CO, 80203 direct or through the funeral home.
Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home and Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

MAES

A memorial gathering for Porfirio Tobias Maes, 82, will be held at the home of his daughter, Connie Valero, at 525 Belmont Ave., in La Junta on Saturday, June 21, from 12 to 8 p.m.

There will be cremation.

Mr. Maes died June 18, 2008.

He was born Sept. 15, 1925 in Maes Creek, near Gardner to Juan Pablo and Manuelita Maes.

He loved his family and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He also enjoyed fishing, camping, horses and lowrider cars.

He is survived by his children Connie (Ben) Valero, Anthony Maes and Susan Maes, sister Perfecta Maes; step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Maes and his parents.

Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home of La Junta is in charge of arrangements.

HUNTER

Kenneth N. Hunter Sr., died at his home in Colorado Springs on May 23, 2008 after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 5, 1924, to Ralph Waldo and Edna Mae Gladfelter (Hunter) in St. Louis, Mo.

He worked at the Fort Lyon Veterans Administration Hospital and retired after 34 years of service.

He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4051, DAV Post #26 of Colorado Springs, La Junta Elks Lodge #701 B.P.O.E. and American Legion Post #009 of La Junta.

He served in World War II, 754 Field Art Battalion from 1943 to 1945 (European Theater).

He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Kenneth N. Hunter Jr. of Colorado Springs; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Ruth Retchloff in 1969 and a grandson, Kevin N. Hunter in 1977.

Private family services were held at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in Colorado Springs.
