PROCTOR
Funeral services for Virginia R. Proctor, 83, of Pueblo and formerly of Rocky Ford will be Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at Ustick donelson Johnson Funeral Home in Rocky Ford. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Mrs. Proctor died Jan. 16, 2004 in Pueblo.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1920 to Kilby and Lula Youcum Bencill in Winnigan, Mo. She married Lincoln Proctor and was an artist.
Mrs. Proctor is survived by a daughter, Donna Garner of Pueblo; a grandson, Wayne Garner of Pueblo; a Granddaughter, Gay (Terryl) Jordan of Inman, Kan.; a great-grandson, Cole Garner of Pueblo; and a great-granddaughter, Hope Jordan of Inman, Kan.
Mrs. Proctor was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lincoln in 1992, a son, John in 2001, three brothers and one sister.
COSAND
There will be a private family service for Leon Cosand, 84, of Rocky ford. He died Jan. 14, 2004 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 16, 1919 in Narka, Kan. to George and Elsie Cosand. Mr. Cosand served in the U.S. Navy in WWII aboard the S.S. Mandan. He was a locomotive engineer with the A.T.S.F. Railroad for 42 years. He was also a farmer and rancher.
Mr. Cosand is survived by his wife, Orvada, of the family home; daughters Linda Cosand and Suzi (Jay) Bamber; and grandchildren Griffin and Trevan Bamber, Justin Hinderliter, and Chris and Jenay Bradley. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne, a brother, George, a sister, Dorothy, and a daughter, Cheri.

COOK
Shirley J. (Brown) Cook, 62, of Litchfield, Conn. passed away on Jan. 4, 2004 following a battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 23, 1941 in La Junta to J.D. and Viola (Schneider) Brown. She was raised by her grandmother the first five years of her life.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Mark Williamson) Newbury of Litchfield, Conn., and duaghter Gail Schneider Wheler of Pueblo; sisters Linda King of Skipperville, Ala. and Marilyn Mackey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren and numerous relatives in La Junta and California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Cook, a sister, Judy Pouletter, a granddaughter, Tiffany Williamson, her parents and grandparents, Ed and Louise Schneider.
PLOMTEAUX
Arrangements are pending for Florence Plomteaux, 82, of Walsenburg, who passed away Jan. 15, 2004 at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home.

MARTINEZ
A memorial service for Tomisita M. Martinez, 88, formerly of La Junta will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Montgomery & Steward Chapel at 1317 N. Main St., in Pueblo.
Mrs. Martinez died Jan. 14, 2004, in Pueblo.
At her request, there was cremation.
She is survived by her partner of 33 years, Alex Licon; daughter Pauline (Frank Valdez) Martinez of Pueblo; four step-daughters; brother Juan Trujillo of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren Tracy (Ernie) Martinez, Leona (Michael) Martinez, Veronica (Ralph) Martinez, Joie (Harold) Lucero and Franki (Armando) Martinez; 10 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Miguel Martinez, daughter Emily Lucero, parents Serapio and Pablita Trujillo, grandson Joseph Michael Aragon, one step-son and one step-daughter.
The family prefers memorials be sent to the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Alzheimer Association in care of Montgomery & Steward Crematorium which is in charge of arrangements.
FORREST
Doris Mae Forrest died Jan. 10, 2004, at the Bent County Memorial Nursing Home. She was born in Las Animas Jan. 3, 1926, to John and Hilda Holmquist Wadhams.
She graduated from Bent County High School in 1943 and later attended the University of Northern Colorado. She worked for many years as a secretary in Denver and Colorado Springs.
She married William Forrest in 1971 in Las Animas. He died in 1975 and she continued to live and work in Colorado Springs until 1979 when she returned to Las Animas to live.
She is survived by one sister, Helen Pritchard; two sisters-in-law, Clarabeth Wadhams and Annabelle Wadhams, all of Las Animas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Las Animas Cemetery
with Derek Hutchison, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Powell-Kuhns Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Those wishing to do so may make memorials to the Arkansas Valley Hospice or to the Presbyterian Church of Las Animas.
BRIGGS
Sylvan Whitaker "Ted" Briggs, 88, a former Las Animas resident, died Jan. 8, 2004, at his home in Olney Springs.
He was born Dec. 18, 1915, in Bettendorf, Iowa, to Ward Arthur and Fannie Josephine (DeMaranville) Briggs. He married Fredericka Caroline "Gretchen" Skeet on Nov. 25, 1945, in Reno, Nev.
He served in the Marines for four years and later enlisted in the Navy. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and was one of the Navy divers who assisted in the recovery of bodies from the USS Arizona. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion in Auburn, Wash. The family lived in Washington for more than 33 years before moving back to Colorado.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Neil (Vickie) Briggs of Olney Springs; a daughter, Linda (Jerry) Hall of Maple Valley, Wash.; grandchildren, Troy Paul Briggs, James Sylvan Briggs, Brandie Jo Matthews, Beebee Jo Briggs and a special grandson, Graves "Jack" Jackson; two sisters, Barbara Dean Boler of The Dalles, Ore. and Betty Ione Duffield of Klickitat, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ward and Clarence and two sisters, Eleanor and Sylvia.
Cremation has taken place. A military graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Fort Lyon National Cemetery. Rev. Jean McPherson, pastor of the Olney Springs Community Methodist Church officiated at the services and a eulogy was given by his son, Neil.
Those wishing to do so may make memorials to the Pioneer Home HealthCare of Rocky Ford and may be sent in care of the Griffy Family Funeral Home in Fowler.
ZACHARY
Funeral services for James Chester "Jim" Zachary, 70, of Marlow, Okla. will be Thursday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, Central High, Okla. with the Rev. David Lawrence presiding and Colorado Boys Ranch CEO Chuck Thompson giving the eulogy. Mr. Zachary died Jan. 12, 2004 in Duncan, Okla.
He was born May 3, 1933 in Wagoner, Okla. to Chester Holmes and Johnnie Judith O'quin Zachary. He was a graduate of Wagoner High School and received two master's degrees, one at East Central College in Ada, Okla. and the other at Adams State College in Alamosa. He married Mary Juanita Worbes Zachary on Dec. 9, 1950 in Wagoner, Okla. He was a former superintendent, art teacher, coach, and principal. Mr. Zachary was the educational director for the Colorado Boys Ranch in La Junta for 24 years. He had lived in Marlow since December, 2000, moving there from La Junta. He enjoyed kids, coaching, woodwork, family, church and was an avid sports fan as well. He raised foster children since 1984. When living in La Junta, Mr. Zachary was a member of the Methodist Church here.
Mr. Zachary is survived by his wife, Juanita, of the family home; sons Chester Dale (Magaly) Zachary of Wichita Falls, Texas, James David (Gwen) Zachary of Norman, Okla. and Kenneth William Zachary of La Junta; a daughter, Judi (Paul) Priest of Marlow, Okla.; two foster sons, Shane (Delaina) Hiett of Wichita Falls, Texas and Bob (Roxanne) Floss of Colorado Springs; a brother, Kenneth Dale Zachary of Wagoner, Okla. and numerous other relatives, foster children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jerry Zachary, Dale Zachary and Butch Zachary.

FRAKES
Rosary service for Margaret Frakes, 90, formerly of Ordway, will be at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Ordway, followed by the Funeral Mass at 3 p.m. with Father Paul Montez officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery
in Ordway. Mrs. Frakes died Jan. 13, 2004 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kan.
She was born Sept. 19, 1913 in Denver to Thomas Eugene and Zillah Rose James Long. She married Leonard Frakes on June 15, 1936 in Ordway. Mrs. Frakes was a mail carrier in Ordway for many years and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church there.
She is survived by daughters Barbara (James) Woodrow of Lakin, Kan. and Beverly (Larry) Stolarczyk of Raton, N.M.; a son, Bernard Frakes of Colorado Springs, six grandsons, seven granddaughters and 33 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Frakes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard, and a granddaughter, Laura Stolarczyk.

WILSON
Memorial services for Robert Eugene Wilson, 66, of Canon City will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at the La Junta United Methodist Church. He died Jan. 12, 2004 in Canon City.
He was born Jan. 20, 1937 to J. Joyce and Hattie Mae Pointer Wilson. He was an only child, spending his childhood in Kansas before moving to La Junta where he lived from 1969 to 1994. He moved to Canon City from Rocky Ford 10 years ago. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was part of the Post War Rebuilding. He was district executive of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Moose Lodge in Pueblo and Canon City, the Masonic Lodge No. 64 in La Junta and the Elks Club and Lions Club of La Junta, where he was also named district governor. Mr. Wilson enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing and golfing.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Smith of Colorado Springs, Deanna (Benjamin) Tucker of Middleburg, Fla., Cynthia (Daryl) Rains of La Junta and Starla Wilson of Alamosa; six grandchildren, Molly and Sarah Smith, Floyd and Katie Tucker and Taylor and David Rains.

SANDOVAL
Rosary service for Fernandez E. "Fern" Sandoval, 61, of Rocky Ford will be Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rocky Ford. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 with Father Paul Montez officiating and iterment to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation is from 1-4:30 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Ustick Donelson Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Sandoval died Jan 12, 2004 at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1942 at Las Vegas, New Mexico to Vincente Max and Conferina Sanchez Sandoval. He was a police officer for the city of Rocky Ford for 18 years and worked as a security policeman in Garden City, Kan. for a number of years. He loved to fish and hunt, and especially liked to take trips to Cripple Creek. Mr. Sandoval was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Mr. Sandoval is survived by his ex wife, Stella Gomez of Rocky Ford; children Anthony (Nancy) Sandoval of Fort Lupton, Steven Sandoval of Las Vegas, N.M., Terrilynn (Paul) Romero of Rocky Ford, Bryan (Jessica) Sandoval of Aurora, Gena Sandoval and Chris Sandoval, both of Greeley; one brother, Herman (Fina) Sandoval of La Junta; sisters Eloisa (Cesar) Esquibel of Rocky Ford, Mary (George) Sanchez of Las Vegas, N.M. and Della (Victor) Esquibel of Mora, N.M.; his mother-in-law, Agnes Gomez of Rocky Ford; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gilbert Sandoval; a sister, Beatrice Baca; and his father-in-law, Ernest Gomez.

REYNOLDS
Graveside inurnment services for Margaret Reynolds, 83, of La Junta will be Saturday, Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery
with Pastor Norman Grantham of the Grace Baptist Church officiating. She died Jan. 11, 2004 in the AVR Nursing Care Center in La Junta.
She was born Feb. 20, 1920 in Ordway to Joseph E. and Cecile B. (Cook) Coffeen. She grew up in Ordway and graduated from high school there. She attended CU in Boulder and married Milton Franklin "Jack" Bollacker, Jr. in 1943 in Phoenix, Ariz. The couple moved to La Junta following Jack's service in WWII and resided there since. Jack passed away in 1964 and shortly thereafter Margaret began working as a secretary for the La Junta city manager and did so for nearly 10 years. In February, 1973 she married Lester Reynolds. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and her hobbies included crocheting, playing bridge and reading.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by a daughter, Jerilyn (Neil) Vick of Boyero; a son, Jay (Cathy) Bollacker of La Junta; grandchildren Kimberly Jill (Brian) Cowdry of Fort Polk, La., Joshua D. (Brenda) Bollacker of Pueblo, Bradley (Renee Good) Bollacker of La Junta, Emilio J. Bollacker of Rocky Ford; Ryan Allen (Trudy) Vick of Peyton and Aaron Jack Vick of Greeley; stepchildren Rita (Ron) Trautwein of Oklahoma City, Kae (Tom) Jeffers of Colorado Springs, Indi (Gary) Pritchard of Las Animas and Les R. Reynolds of Dewey, Okla. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren, one neice and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and a sister, Nolda Townsend.

BAY
Memorial services for Marjorie Arlene (McChesney) Berndt-Bay, 86 of Fort Collins and formerly of La Junta and La Veta will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 West Drake Road, Fort Collins. Inurnment will be in La Junta. She died Saturday, Jan. 10.
Mrs. Bay was born Jan. 6, 1918 in Yuma to James and Ruth Minnie (Carter) McChesney. She attended public school in Las Animas and graduated from high school there. After high school she attended cosmetology school in Pueblo. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in La Veta where she held many different roles in the church. She also played the organ for the church. She painted in her spare time and was a member of the La Veta Art Guild. She belonged to the Lady Elks and was a member of the Senior Citizens Group of La Veta.
She is survived by her son Donald (Caroyl) of Parker, daughters Judy (Gary) Ryser of Parker and Barbara (Jerry) Brumit of Fort Collins, grandchildren Amie (Dan) Hedstrom and their children Breanna, Danni and Tanner of Fort Collins, Laneigh (Craig) Walters and their children Kalie and Justin of Broomfield, Geri (Erik) Olson and son Brady of Fort Collins, Candice (Hector) Trevino and their children Hector Aaron and Chace of Elizabeth, Shannon (Brad) Courtaney and children Kathleen, Daniel, Nathan and Janci of Valparaiso, Ind., Dustin (Melinda) Ryser of Cheyenne, Wyo., Dawnde (Marc) Mitchell and children Taj and Cade of Parker, Troy Berndt of Littleton and Chanc Berndt of Englewood.
She was preceded in death by first husband Roy Berndt, second husband Warren G. Bay, her parents, two brothers and one sister.

MONROE
Memorial services for June Marie Monroe, 74 of La Junta will be held at a later date. She died Jan. 11, 2004.
She was born June 14, 1925 in Arlington. She was a member of the Prairie Bible Chapel. She also worked many years as a cook at the Hickory House Restaurant.
Mrs. Monroe is survived by her husband Buddy Monroe of La Junta, sons Tom Monroe, Jeff (Janet) Monroe, all of Fort Morgan, Larry (Sheila) Monroe of Himphill, Texas, daughter Bette (Rod) Hunt of Billings, Mt., nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law, Jean, and one sister.

ECHER
After a long and valiant fight with cancer, David L. Echer departed this world to be with the Lord on June 9, 2004. born Luciano Gorkic Anapoli on September 21, 1948, in Chiati, Italy, he came to the United States at the age of 8 1/2 and was adopted by Joe and Sylvia Theresa Echer of Trinidad, Colo. As a youngster, Dave attended Trinidad Catholic Schools. At the age of 13, he moved to Kim, Colo. where he was raised by Clell and Marie Reagan along with close friend John Marroney. Dave graduated from Kim High School in 1967.
After graduation, Dave joined the United States Navy where he was a radar tech on P3 planes. In 1971, he was Honorably Discharged and returned to Kim to assist the Reagan's in the operation of their ranch. He also attended Trinidad State Junior College during this time.
On September 30, 1972, Dave married Lori Ann Reese and son Ryan was born March 29, 1974.
Dave held various jobs throughout his career. After a short stint in the mining industry in Urad, Colo., Dave returned to the Arkansas Valley where he worked for six years at Southeast Colorado Power. During his employment there, he received his Journeyman Electrician License. In 1979, he returned to the mining industry again where he worked as an electrician for CF&I in the mines outside Trinidad. Dave then moved to Colorado Springs in 1983 to work for ICG Electric. After two years, Dave and his family relocated to Swink and he became employed by Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center (AVRMC) as an electrician.
During his tenure at AVRMC, Dave was a valued and hardworking member of the Facilities Department. For the past four years, he served as the Facility Supervisor and was instrumental in the planning and overseeing of the new construction of the hospital's upgrades and additions including the ICU ward, Emergency Room and the Facility Plant.
Dave relished hard work and truly cared for those who worked with him. During his hard-fought battle with melanoma, Dave still continued to work and could often be heard saying, "I want to be there to get my guys started."
He will be remembered as a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather uncle and friend. Dave's first priority in his life was both his immediate and extended family. His caring and compassionate ways were also felt by his friends and that love extended to animals as well especially his dogs Harley and Kelsey. One of Dave's passions was motorcycles. He was extensively involved in his son Ryan's motocross racing during the 1980s and most recently enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson.
One of Dave's proudest times was the birth of his grandson Kurtis Luciano Echer in October of 2003. Dave battled his disease in order to see his grandson born. He was also very close with his twin great nieces, Morgann & Madysen Cordova. Dave often said that these three children were the best medicine.
Dave was loved and will be missed by his many family members, especially his wife Lori, son Ryan, daughter-in-law Johnnie Marie and grandson Kurtis, all of Swink. He is also survived by his mother Sylvia Theresa Echer and mother-in-law Margaret L. Nauta both of Swink; sisters-and brothers-in-law Deborah and Russ Adams and Rhonda and Jeff McClelland; nieces Amy McClelland (Jerry) Cordova and Holli Houghton (Owen) Coulman; nephew W. Reese (Deanna) Houghton; great nieces Morgann and Madysen Cordova; great nephews Loghan and Gavin Houghton; aunts Esther Mattedi and Catherine Mattedi; and special friends John and Janet Marroney.
Memorial services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in La Junta at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14th.
