Cheryl A. Dunn
Feb. 12, 1951 — Sept. 13, 2007
Cheryl Ann Dunn died Sept. 13, 2007 at Community Hospital.
She was 56.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Cheryl was born on Feb. 12, 1951 in Hampton, Va.
She spent her childhood in Gunnison, and graduated from Paonia High School.
She was a five-year resident of Clifton. Cheryl was a beloved mother and friend.
She was the typical “mom of the block.” Everyone was her child.
Cheryl married Robert James Aime, Sr., who preceded her in death.
Her second and third husbands, Bruce Kruckeberg and Donald Dunn, also preceded her in death, as did one brother, John “Johnny” Smith.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert Aime, Jr. of Colorado Springs and Mark Kruckeberg of Grand Junction; two daughters, Stephanie Marie Vokes of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Chari Adelle Baker of Norwood; and four grandchildren.
Cremation arrangements are under the care of Martin Mortuary.
Lois Love Clark
Aug. 9, 1914 — Sept. 15, 2007
Lois Love Clark of Palisade died September 15, 2007.
She was 93.
She was born in Holyoke Aug. 9, 1914 and moved with her parents, A.G. and Emma Tilton to the Grand Valley in 1917.
She had four siblings, Adelaide Rush; L. William Tilton; Myrtle Clark and A. G. Tilton, Jr. all who preceded her in death.
Statistics cannot begin to tell the story of this amazing pioneer woman or the special life she led.
She attended Palisade schools and married her high school sweetheart, James A. “Jamie” Clark shortly after they graduated.
They moved into their home on a fruit orchard property in Vineland.
The next year their first son, James L. “Larry” Clark was born.
Unfortunately, while they were away one evening the house caught fire and burned to the ground.
They rebuilt a modest home on the same site and for the next 43 years lived there.
Two children were born there, Sylvia Morrison and Michael A. Clark.
All the children were born with the assistance of the family’s long time friend and nurse, Fairy Ryan who worked with Dr. Weidline.
Jamie died on Sept. 6, 1975. it was a crushing blow to all his friends and family.
Lois continued to live in her home and manage all her affairs for 74 years, until her recent illness and death.
She was greatly loved and will always be missed. God Speed.
Survivors include her children; nine devoted grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many cousins; nieces and nephews many who live in the valley.
Herbert A. Brown
Aug. 8, 1952 — Sept. 16, 2007
Herbert A. Brown died Sept. 16 at his Nucla residence. He was 55.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Herbert Arthur Brown was born on Aug. 8, 1952, the son of Herbert John and Shirley (Smith) Brown in Montrose.
Herb attended schools and entered into the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country.
He married Linda Joanne Park on Oct. 26, 1974, in Montrose and they happily shared 32 years of marriage.
Herb loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, camping, hiking, searching for arrowheads.
He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and loved watching the games.
Herb adored his family, and especially enjoyed his precious grandchildren.
Herb was a good husband, a loving father and grandfather who had a quiet, reserved manner.
He was a man of few words, who was strong, never complained and fought until the end.
He will be greatly missed and forever admired for his strength.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda of the family home in Nucla; his daughters, Michelle Firestone and husband Jeff of Oakdale, Calif.; Jennifer Duarte and husband Juan of Nucla; his grandchildren, Brittany, Sabrina, David, Donovan and Johnny; great-granddaughter, Valerie; his mother, Shirley Gallegos of Grand Junction; his siblings; John Brown of Alaska, Terry Brown and wife Carol of Fruita, Julie Gallegos of Colorado, Glenda Davis of Delta, Judy Williams and husband David of Olathe and Janet Hampton and husband Terry of Idaho; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his father, Herbert.
Arrangements are being handled under the care and direction of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors in Montrose.
Ada A. Peebler
Nov. 3, 1935 — Sept. 14, 2007
Ada Ann Peebler of Austin died Sept. 14 at Delta County Memorial Hospital.
She was 71.
She was born Nov. 3, 1935, in Denver to Jim and Theresa Kozacek Valentine.
She married Jack E. Peebler on May 26, 1956, in Arvada.
She was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She has been a resident of Delta County since 1973 when she moved from Colorado Springs.
She had also lived in Castle Rock and Arvada.
She especially enjoyed making and decorating cakes for weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions.
She is survived by her husband Jack Peebler of Austin; a son and wife, Kevin and Julie Peebler of Delta; a daughter and spouse, Dana and Jody Sparks of Hotchkiss; two sisters, Julia Small of Paonia and Barbara Bowles of Arvada; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held Sept. 17 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Cedaredge.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery.
Ernest V. Maedche
Aug. 21, 1930 — Sept. 10, 2007
Longtime Montrose resident, Ernest V. Maedche, died Sept. 10 at the San Juan Living Center.
He was 77.
Ernest V. Maedche was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Bethune to Chris E. and Lydia (Trautman) Maedche.
He attended high school in Lincoln, Neb., and graduated from Yankton College in South Dakota.
He then attended and graduated from Pacific School of Religion in Berkley, Calif.
Ernie served as a minister in West Point, Neb., to complete his student preaching and was ordained in Ravenna, Neb.
Over the years, he served churches in Flagler, Colo., Douglas, Wyo., and locally in Montrose at the Hillcrest Congregational United Church of Christ.
Ernie worked in radio advertising sales at KUBC in Montrose for a number of years.
Ernie greatly loved the outdoors; he was an avid trophy deer and elk hunter.
He enjoyed gardening and yard work, in which, his home outside Montrose shows his handiwork and each tree he planted.
He loved training horses and caring for them, participating in horse shows, winning awards and many ribbons.
The family enjoyed Jeep trips into the beautiful Colorado mountains and camping out under the stars.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Helmut.
He is survived by sons, Chris Maedche and Terry Maedche, as well as their mother, Mary Jean Maedche; his sister, Oleta Ernest; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
A memorial service to honor Ernie will take place on Thursday morning, Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hillcrest Congregational Church of Christ.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors in Montrose.
Mildred L. Low
Dec. 22, 1917 — Sept. 15, 2007
Mildred Lorraine (Carroll) Low of Grand Junction died Sept. 15.
She was 89.
Visitation will take place Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary with the funeral service following at 1 in the chapel.
Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
She was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Ordway to Albert A. and Bertha M. Carroll.
On Sept. 3, 1939, she and George D. Low eloped and were married in Steamboat Springs.
Their first daughter, Bonnie Lorraine, was born Oct. 20, 1945, and second daughter, Jean Dolores, was born Aug. 6, 1948.
In her younger years, Mildred enjoyed camping and traveling with her family.
Mildred and George belonged to the Sunshine Chapter #53, Order of Eastern Star, holding various offices.
Mildred remained active with Eastern Star until last year.
One of her favorite activities was marching with the Star Steppers drill team. Most of all, she loved being with her family and joining in their activities and outings.
Survivors include her daughters, Jean (Robert) Slaven of Grand Junction and Bonnie (Richard) Bradley of Washington state; grandchildren, Angela Marie (Jared) Franklin, Danielle Nicole (Phillip) Hindson of Grand Junction, Ryan Lee Bradley of Bellingham, Wash.; great-grandson, Braden Michael Hindson; her brother, Richard Carroll of Washington state; numerous sister-in-laws; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by George, her loving husband of 48 years; grandson, Brent Richard Bradley; her parents; her sister; and a brother.
Dennis T. Gerbaz
Oct. 7, 1926 — Sept. 18, 2007
Dennis T. Gerbaz of Glenwood Springs died Sept. 18.
A Rosary will be said today, Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church in Glenwood Springs.
Services will take place at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
Interment will follow services at Rosebud Cemetery
in Glenwood Springs.
This ends the line of Marcien Gerbaz, as none of the children ever married.
Dennis T. Gerbaz was born to Marcien and Matilda (Deleonard) Gerbaz on Oct. 7, 1926, in Woody Creek on the Dellore Vagneur Ranch.
The family lived at Missouri Heights, Emma, and Woody Creek, moving to Carbondale in 1929.
In 1946, the family purchased the ranch next to them from Arthur Bon.
Dennis graduated from Carbondale Union High School and went to Mesa College to become a mechanic but his family needed him to help on the ranch so he went home to Carbondale to help, and he never left.
He spent the rest of his life there taking care of his father, mother and Nile.
Dennis was devoted to his family and his church, St. Stephen’s in Glenwood Springs, and knew how to take care of the land and animals.
Survivors include his first cousins, Hilda Blanc of Glenwood Springs and Eva Gerbaz of Carbondale; his godchildren, who kept him young, Tucker, Wyatt, Grace and Caroline Farris of Carbondale, Giampaolo (Paola) Gerbaz of Aillan, Italy and Melano, Italy, Flaviano Gerbaz of Valle d’Aosta, Italy; his father, Eliseo Gerbaz of Sara, Italy and Vittorina Deleonard of Doues, Italy.
Preceding him in death were his father, Marcien; mother Matilda; his sister, Alda; and his brothers, Mars Jr. and Nile Gerbaz.

Helen C. McCune
Oct. 31, 1932 — Oct. 1, 2007
Helen C. McCune of Palisade died Oct. 1 at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was 74.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
Burial will follow in New Elmwood Cemetery
in Fruita.
Helen was born Oct. 31, 1932, in Mesa and raised in Mesa County.
Helen married Orlin E. McCune on Sept. 30, 1951, in Palisade. He died in 2002.
She enjoyed fishing, planting flowers, taking long drives, and she especially enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons, Cliford, Orville, Ronald, Harvey, Mitch and Kenny McCune, all of Grand Junction, and Robert (Karen) McCune of DeBeque; daughters, Hilda Shade of Bennett, Patricia Stogsdill of Fruita and Debbie Slaughenhaupt of Clifton; brother, Harold Bates of Lenora, Kan.; sister, Dolly Smiley of Layton, Utah; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Leon Bates, and sister, Betty Smiley also preceded her in death.
