Howard Eugene Branson
June 25, 1921 — May 4, 2006
Howard E. Branson of Clifton died May 4 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 84.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Howard’s Life. A potluck with western music will be held Wednesday at the Collbran Congregational Church basement from 2 to 5 p.m. (casual dress). A Masonic service will conducted at 2 p.m.
He was born June 25, 1921, in Collbran, the son of Harvey C. and Florence A. Martin Branson.
Howard married Mary Brown in Glenwood Springs on Oct. 31, 1948. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1987.
He then married Laura B. Linn on July 12, 1987. Howard was a United States Army veteran serving in the World War II European Theater in England, France and Germany.
He had 34 years of federal service, most of which was with the Bureau of Reclamation at Bonham Reservoir.
He was very active in the community and was a member and past commander of American Legion Post #86; past master and 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #101; a Rainbow Dad; member of the Eastern Star, Cedar Chapter; member of the Yuma Elks Lodge #476; a member of the Collbran Town Council and a volunteer and board member for the Plateau Valley Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years.
Howard loved hunting, fishing, and his life on Grand Mesa.
He is survived by his wife, Laura of Clifton; his daughter, Linda E. Branson; and grandson, Branson C. Quint both of Ketchican, Alaska; two stepsons, Russell (Marnie) Dent of Las Cruces, N.M., and Cecil L. (Kathy) Dent of Friday Harbour, Wash.; his sister, Velma Bartlemay of Grand Junction; his brother, Hugh (Rose) Branson of Collbran; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lee Branson.
Memorial contributions can be sent in Howard’s name to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado or the Plateau Valley Fire Department in lieu of flowers.
Arrangement are under the direction of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
Mike Nichols
March 22, 1962 — May 25, 2006
Mike Nichols of Grand Junction died in a traffic accident on May 25. He was 44.
A memorial service will be held at Callahan-Edfast on June 24 at 2 p.m.
Mike was born in Whittier, Calif., and attended school in Rowland Heights, Calif. While attending school, he began to learn the plastering trade, and started his own company, M&N Plastering, in 1987.
He met his future wife, Sandy, in 1984 and they were married six years later, settling in Chino, Calif., where they spent 10 years before moving to Grand Junction in 1999. Mike worked briefly for a local stucco company and then re-opened M&N Plastering, Inc.
Most of Mike’s spare time was spent outdoors doing the things he loved. He was an accomplished off-road motorcycle rider and for many years competed in desert races and grand prix events. A skilled marksman, he also competed in sporting clay events. His greatest passion, however, was fishing. After leaving California and the Pacific Ocean, he could often be found at a local lake for the evening bite.
Most people who met Mike were impressed by his energy, honesty and forthright manner. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Nichols of Grand Junction; sons, Sean Taber of Torrance, Calif., and Eric Taber of Homer, Alaska; his grandmother, Roberta Knauss of Whittier, Calif.; his mother, Janet Skow of Rowland Heights, Calif.; father, Phil Nichols and stepmother, Linda Nichols of Montclair, Calif.; two brothers, Bob Nichols, of Las Vegas and Danny Skow of Rowland Heights, Calif.; and three sisters, Cathy Wurst of Tigard, Ore., Karen Brayton of Portland, Ore., and Stacey Quinn of Rowland Heights, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society, 200 Grand Ave., Grand Junction, CO 81501.

Ione O’Brien
Dec. 19, 1915 — June 10, 2006
Ione O’Brien of Grand Junction died June 10. She was 90.
By Ione’s request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
Ione Davis, daughter of Tom and Norah Floyde Davis, was born in Almena, Kan., the fourth of four children. She attended Almena schools and graduated from high school in 1933.
On Feb. 6, 1935, in Hayes, Kan. She was married to Alfred W. O’Brien. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary on Feb. 6, 1985, plus two more years before Alfred passed away on May 10, 1987. They made Grand Junction their permanent residence after World War II.
Ione was a member of the Bookcliff Country Club, loved the game of golf and the friends she made there.
She is survived by her sons, Donald D. (Vivian), Frank J., and daughter, Brenda, all of Grand Junction; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ione was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, two sisters, one infant daughter and three grandsons.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ione’s memory to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.

Velva Kosakowski
August 29, 1931 – May 27, 2007
Velva M. Kosakowski of Grand Junction died on May 27, 2007 at age 75.
A memorial service will be held , May 31 at 11 a.m. at the VFW off 30 Rd. and I-70 B on Florence Rd.
Velva was born on Aug. 29, 1931 in Adrin, Texas, to Jack and Edith Whinery.
She married Clifford Miller on Nov. 4, 1956. To this marriage was born two daughters, Carla Seybold of Wall, S.D.; and Sandra Hart of Grand Junction; two sons, Cliff Miller Jr. of Grand Junction; and Bobby Miller of Grand Junction. She married Chester Kosakowski, age 81, on Oct. 31, 2005. She had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We will miss her.
Survivors include Laura Murray of Clifton; A.J. Whinery of Dayton, Nev.; Floyd Whinery of Clifton; Rose Hampton of Evanston, Wyo.; and Jean Herron of Grand Junction.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, Lawrence Whinery and sister, Wanda Whinery.
Harold Roy Harvey
July 23, 1940 — Jan. 29, 2007
Harold Roy Harvey died at Family Health West on Jan. 29 while courageously battling cancer. His spirit was finally released to glide on God ’s mountain tops. He was 66.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction. Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary and again at 10 a.m. at the Molina Baptist Church on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with the funeral service at 11 a.m. followed by the burial at the Mesa Cemetery.
Harold was a loving husband and a wonderful father to his three children and will be missed by them greatly.
He was born July 23, 1940, in Collbran to Roy and Merle Harvey (Wharton) of Mesa. As a child he attended school in Mesa, and later Central High School in Grand Junction. He graduated from there in 1957, and later went on to study architecture, earning an associate ’s degree from Mesa College.
On June 18, 1960, Harold married the love of his life, Judy Bauman, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Junction. Together, they raised their family in Mesa, where he was a cattle rancher.
Harold had a lifelong love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter, and downhill skier. He was on the USSA Ski Team and captured many medals! In his early years, he skied and worked at Mesa Creek Ski Area on the National Ski Patrol, and later helped build Powderhorn Ski Area. Harold became an avalanche instructor, and served on the Colorado Ski Country USA board. He went on to manage Powderhorn for more than 27 years, until retiring from there in 1997. Beginning in 1996, he owned and operated Mesa Lakes Resort and was a fixture there until shortly before his death.
Harold was a major part of the Plateau Valley community. He served on the Plateau Valley School Board, the Mesa Community Center Board, and was former president of the Coon Creek Reservoir Company. He participated in the Plateau Valley Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and was involved in many rescues. Harold never hesitated to lend a hand to others when the need arose.
Harold ’s magic was his way with people. He had a way of making anyone feel comfortable and welcomed. Harold loved nothing more than having a good cup of coffee and good conversation. Any person that met Harold was proud to call him a friend. Some of the things that Harold loved most in life were operating machinery, dirt bike riding in Utah with his friends, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Harvey of Mesa; his son, Michael Harvey (Amy) of Mesa; his daughter, Michelle Harvey of Grand Junction; his daughter, Kristin Propst (Jake) of Mesa; and six grandchildren, Ethan and Sara Harvey; Kyle; Adrienne; Felicity and Preston Propst, whom he loved deeply; his father, Roy Harvey of Mesa; and his sister, Helen Eldridge (Walt) of Mesa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Merle Harvey of Mesa.

Fred G. Orf Jr.
Feb. 1, 1920 — March 30, 2007
Fred G. Orf Jr. died March 30 at the Palisade Living Center. He was 87.
At Fred ’s request, there will be no public service.
He was born to Fred Sr. and Mary (Wintz) Orf on Feb. 1, 1920, in Rockwell, Ill.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Fred married Betty Belmont and they had five children — Colin, Colleen, Gayle Ann, Michael and Ed.
Fred and Betty later divorced but remained friends. Also surviving Fred are his seven grandchildren.
His family and second family at the Palisade Living Center will dearly miss Fred.
Ada C. Houck
died April 1, 2007
Ada C. Houck of Grand Junction died April 1 at St. Mary ’s Hospital. She was 78.
A memorial service will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary April 7 at 10 a.m.
She was a retired teacher.
Survivors include her sons, George A. Black, Larry D. Black and Raymond Houck all of Grand Junction; her daughter Cheryl Black of Grand Junction; her sister Carol Nolde of Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren and 2 grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
Ruth I. McCown
December 24, 1918 – April 2, 2007
Ruth McCown died April 2, 2007 in Grand Junction after a long illness. She was 88.
Graveside services will be held in Polson, Mont. at the Lakeview Cemetery
at 11 a.m. April 7, 2007 conducted by the Church of Jesus Christ-Latter Day Saints.
Ruth was born Christmas Eve, 1918 in Fort Collins, the youngest of seven children born to Robert and Beatrice Davis. All her siblings have preceded her in death.
She married Woodrow McCown in 1941 and spent much of their married life together on various farms and ranches in Colorado and Wyoming and were former residents of Polson, Mont. for many years. Woodrow preceded Ruth in death in 1995. In 2000, Ruth became ill and moved to Grand Junction to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Ruth was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Polson since 1993.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherry and son-in-law Ralph Ohm of Grand Junction; four grandchildren; Shawna Ohm Muchmore of Keizer, Ore.; Michael Ohm of Grand Junction; Rebecca Ohm Robinson of Salem, Ore.; and David Ohm of Longmont and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren, Bryan; Erin and Anna Janel Ohm; Chelsey Spoltore; Caitlin and Kyle Muchmore; and Elizabeth Ohm.
Local arrangements are under the care and direction of Martin Mortuary.

Mark J. Landreville
March 17, 1956 — April 14, 2007
Mark Landreville of Grand Junction died in his home April 14. He was 51.
A memorial service will be held at Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Montrose at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21.
Mark was born to Joseph and Lydia Landreville on March 17, 1956, in Dorchester, Mass. He lived in Massachusetts for part of his life and then came to Colorado to make his home. He loved fishing and the outdoors and being with his family and friends.
Survivors include his sons, Chris, Luke and Andrew Landreville; his daughters, Sarah Landreville and Bethany Rafferty; his sisters, Helen Gouveia and Rosie Grosso; his brothers, Joe and Steve Landreville; his grandchildren, Scotty, Iva, Kyle, Callie and Hannah.
Mark was a loving father, brother and friend.
Mark, you will always be in our hearts. We will never forget you because you will always be with us now in Heaven and you were on earth.

David Michael White
Dec. 29, 1988 — April 23, 2007
David Michael White of Grand Junction died April 23. He was 18.
Visitation for David Michael White will be held Thursday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Road. Private services will be held Friday, April 27.
David Michael White was born to proud parents, Michael Watson White III and Melissa Markwardt, at St. Mary ’s Hospital Dec. 29, 1988. David was the eldest child and partner to his brother, Travis Christian White.
On Sept. 6, 2006, David and Katie LeAnn Anderson became the proud parents of Christian David White.
Because David had a joyful spirit and a kind heart, he touched many lives. David was artistic which was revealed through his many talents. David enjoyed fixing cars and spending time with his family and friends, whom he loved dearly. He always had something to say to make you laugh and liked to have fun. David was kind, considerate and patient. He always helped others without hesitation. David loved his mentor and closest friend, Daniel Tucker.
Survivors include his parents, Michael Watson White III and Melissa Markwardt; brother and constant companion, Travis Christian White; infant son, Christian David White; loving girlfriend, Katie LeAnn Anderson; younger sister, Mikala of Grand Junction; maternal grandparents, Lois and Dave Markwardt of Douglas, Wyo.; paternal grandparents, Sharon and Mike Springmeyer of Heber Springs, Ark.; aunts and uncles, Christopher Springmeyer and Candy Lout and David and Johnny of Douglas, Wyo.; paternal surviving aunts, Brenda of Denver, Sandy of Portland, Ore., and Dawn of Eugene, Ore.
W. Earl Holt
April 29, 1914 — May 2, 2007
William Earl Holt of Delta died May 2 at San Juan Living Center in Montrose. He was 93.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 8, at 10 a.m. at Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear. Burial will be at Delta City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Mesa View Mortuary today, Monday, May 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.
He was born April 29, 1914, in Hotchkiss to William and Sallie Robinson Holt.
He married Leta Mae on Dec. 28, 1971, in Dallas, Texas. She preceded him in death.
He was employed as a mechanic for many years.
He was a member of Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear.
Earl grew up in Hotchkiss and graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1933. He moved to Wyoming in 1939 and returned to Delta County in 1985. He enjoyed collecting coins, polishing rocks and gardening.
In his most recent years, he delivered meals for Columbine Senior Center and was a member of AARP.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Erwin of Delta; a nephew, Kenneth Holt and niece Bonnie Haywood, both of Delta; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse, Mae Holt; his son, Bennie Holt; one sister; and two brothers.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery.
