Harold Goltzer
November 15, 1915 - December 4, 2004
Harold Goltzer, former associate principal bassoonist with the New York Philharmonic, died peacefully in his home in Carbondale on Saturday, Dec. 4. He was 89.
Mr. Goltzer was born on Nov. 15, 1915, in New York. He studied bassoon with the legendary Simon Kovar, member of the New York Philharmonic, at the Juilliard School of Music as a recipient of the New York Philharmonic Scholarship and graduated from that institution in 1936. During this time he was a member of the National Orchestral Association, whose faculty he later joined. In 1937, he became a member of the Columbia Broadcasting Symphony, as well as recording with many radio and television orchestras, including Bell Telephone, Firestone, Omnibus, and the NBC Opera among others. In 1958, Mr. Goltzer became associate principal bassoon of the New York Philharmonic, a position he held until his retirement in 1983.
In addition to his active performance schedule, Mr. Goltzer was a teacher, serving on the faculties of the Hartt School, the Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, the Manhattan School of Music and Queens College. He was also a member of the Aspen Music Festival for many summers from the 1950s into the 1990s. Mr. Goltzer's students perform in major orchestras throughout the world and have remained in close contact with their mentor. Many generations of students worldwide practice his organized scale studies. Since his retirement, Mr. Goltzer resided in Colorado.
Mr. Goltzer was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Marcelle Cayton Goltzer; his brother, Irving, and sister-in-law Anne Goltzer; and his sister, Dorothy, and brother-in-law, Joseph Starley. He is survived by his brother, Albert, and sister-in-law, Doris, of Westport, Conn.; his son, Eric, of Philadelphia; his daughter, Dana Coppolino, of Marble; his adored grandchildren: Alyssa Ohnmacht and grandson-in-law David Savard, of Marble, John Ohnmacht, of Boulder, Andrea Goltzer, of Aston, Pa., and Elizabeth Golter, of Norristown, Pa.; his cherished great-grandchildren, Olivia and Erica Savard, of Marble; his many adored nieces and nephews, and his many students who became like members of his family.
Services were private. The family offers sincere thanks to the many caregivers and health workers who gave selflessly of their time during the past few years.

Richard James "Dick" Platz Sr.
October 2, 1943 - December 6, 2004
Richard James "Dick" Platz Sr. passed away Monday, Dec. 6, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 61.
He was born Oct. 2, 1943, to James Platz and Georgia (Ames) Platz in Moab, Utah. He was raised and attended school in Gateway and Collbran, Colo. He graduated from Gateway High School in 1961.
He married Jody McBroom on July 11, 1964. Dick worked as a rancher and a truck driver. He was the third of four generations of Platzes to work for Craig Ranches of Gateway. He also worked for various trucking companies before starting his own trucking business in 1989.
Dick retired in 1997 to Dinosaur and remained there until the fall of 2004 when he moved to Eckert, Colo., with his cousin Bud Ames.
Mr. Platz's hobbies were fishing, rodeos and bullriding. He was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and baseball.
Surviving Dick are his wife and four children: sons Richard James "Jim" Platz, Jr. of Fruita and John Wayne Platz of Aurora, and daughters, JoAnn Hindson of Grand Junction and Julie Platz of Rifle. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition his foster mother, Verna Severson of Collbran, his foster brothers and sisters, Carl Severson, Wes Severson both of Grand Junction, Les Severson of Collbran and Ruby Severson of Grand Junction, survive him.

Kenneth J. McMillan
October 10, 1930 - December 7, 2004
Kenneth J. "Big Mac" McMillan, age 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 7.
He was born in Big Bay, Mich., on Oct. 10, 1930, to William and Georgina (Gannon) McMillan. He married the former Drusilla (Drue) Sutherland on Jan. 21, 1950, in Bay City, Mich. Ken worked with his father-in-law building homes in the Muskegon, Mich., area and was a business representative for the Local 100 in Muskegon. He was an avid fisherman, and loved to compete for all the perch in area lakes. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Muskegon.
Survivors include his wife, Drusilla (Drue); two sons, Father Cliff McMillan, of Glenwood Springs, and Don McMillan, of Mississippi; one daughter, Linda (Denny) O'Brien, of Muskegon; six grandchildren: Robert (Larissa) Swanson, of Virginia, Chris (Jennifer) Swanson, of Muskegon, Carey (Chris) Lussenden, of Muskegon, Kathy (John) Miller, of Daggett, Mich., Jennifer O'Brien, of Muskegon, and Jonathon O' Brien, of Muskegon; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Joan Thomen, of Alpena, Mich., and Sandra (Steve) Stanos, of Tawas City, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jack and William McMillan.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Father Ernest Bernott and Father Cliff McMillan officiating. Interment will be at Laketon Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Clock Funeral Home in Muskegon. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church Restoration Fund. Laura Helen Nordhausen
October 11, 1909 - December 4, 2004
Laura Helen Nordhausen, formerly known as Laura (Pat) Anderson, passed away Saturday, Dec. 4.
She was born Oct. 11, 1909, in Bradley, Ill. Her family lived in Red Key, Ind., until Laura was six and then moved to Garden City, Kan., where she grew up. Laura lived for short periods of time in Denver and Arizona before moving to Glenwood Springs, where she spent the remainder of her life.
While living in Glenwood, she married John R. Anderson and is survived in this marriage by their son, Jerry A. Anderson, his wife, Heather, and their two children, Miles and Mindy.
Several years after John died, Laura married Warren (Nord) A. Nordhausen who preceded her in death. From this marriage, she is survived by Lloyd J. Nordhausen, his wife, Barbara, their two children, Craig and Amy, and their families, and Carole L. Brown (Nordhausen) and her daughter, Dendy.
Laura worked for several years at the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce Information Center and in an ophthalmologist's office. She also worked in three different dental offices, and what was the First National Bank of Glenwood. Laura loved fast red cars, horses, books and conversations over a good cup of coffee.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at the First United Glenwood Springs Methodist Church. The family requests no flowers. Contributions may be made a local library or a favorite charity.
Kiara Paige Trujillo

Kiara Paige Trujillo, of New Castle, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
She was born Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Valley View Hospital and is survived by her father and mother, Michael A. and Andria M. (Smith) Trujillo; brother Toby R. Nole; sister Chalyce A. Trujillo; grandparents Orlon Trujillo, of William, Ariz., and Patrick and Sharon Britton, of New Castle; great-grandmothers Velma Welch, of Santa Fe, N.M., Donelia Trujillo, of Santa Fe, and Ethel B. Brown of Castle Rock; two uncles; four aunts; two cousins; and many greats.

Earleen Alberteen Roark Krahn
January 11, 1927 - November 22, 2004
Earleen Alberteen Roark Krahn, on Nov. 22, lost her brave fight to recover from a fall in her home on Oct. 11. Her family was at their Nan's bedside at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., where she passed peacefully thanks to the skill and care of the staff.
Earleen was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Amarillo, Texas, to Amos and Alberteen Roark. She married returning Navy serviceman E.L. Krahn Jr. in 1946, who predeceased her in 1989. They had four children: Dennis Krahn, Deborah Huber, Karen Luxton, and Konnie Krahn-Prosence. They lived in west Texas for many years before moving to Oklahoma in 1966 to begin anew in the cattle ranching business.
Earleen was a loving mother/homemaker, then a secretary, bank clerk, children's clothing store owner, and restaurateur. In her well-earned retirement, she was a keen bridge player, belonging to three bridge clubs, and a much-sought-after partner. She was also an enthusiastic football fan, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys (her home state team) and the OU Sooners (where Konnie attended university) and later the Denver Broncos (since her Colorado family followed them closely). She was an avid reader, and traveled widely, mostly to visit her children. Glenwood Springs was a place she visited often, as she loved the beauty and grandeur of the mountains but mostly to spend time with Luke (her youngest grandchild), doing anything he wanted to do. Nan returned home retelling stories of their many adventures and special memories they shared. Nan touched and enriched many lives and will be greatly missed by her loved ones far and wide.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother. Other survivors include: son Dennis Krahn (Linda), of Aberdeen, Scotland; daughters Deborah Huber (Dennis), of Stayton, Ore., Karen Luxton (Joe), of Dallas, and Konnie Krahn-Prosence (Matt), of Glenwood Springs; four grandchildren, Kara Frank, of Oakdale, Calif., Jordan Schweiger, of Salem, Ore., Andrew Krahn, of Aberdeen, and Luke Prosence, of Glenwood Springs; two siblings, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The memorial service was held Oct. 24 at The First United Methodist Church in Atoka, Okla., where she lived. Nan generously supported and partook deeply of the fellowship of the church. Daisy B. West
1922-2004
Former Glenwood Springs resident Daisy B. West died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Family Health West in Fruita. She was 82.
A homemaker, she was survived by a son, Robert West of Grand Junction; a daughter, Carole Slonaker of Palisade; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Martin Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction.

Loren C. Peyton
1921-2004
Loren C. Peyton, 83, died at the Tennessee Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
A native of Miles City, Mont., he had lived most of his life in Colorado and had lived in Murfreesboro for the past three years. He was a self-employed auto mechanic and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Mina Heap Heerlein, his wife, Dorothy Peyton; daughter Jean Henry, and sons Jerry Peyton and Ron Newby.
Survivors include sons Bill Peyton of Norman, Okla., Edward Peyton of Murfreesboro, Bob Peyton of Kelso, Wash., John Peyton of Silt, Melvin Peyton of Colorado Springs, and Lee Peyton of Radium; daughter Patricia Peyton of Coos Bay, Ore.; stepsons Jim Newby of California, Bob Newby of Gypsum, Gene Newby of Missouri and Gary Newby of New York; a stepsister, Doris Bair of Glenwood Springs; 33 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Colorado at a later date.

Mary Jane Hurst
May 14, 1941 - December 20, 2004
On Dec. 20, after watching her grandchildren decorate the Christmas tree and while reading a good book, Mrs. Mary Jane Hurst, of El Jebel, died peacefully at home. The "old black crow" is gone and her "tribe" will miss her always. She is loved by her husband of 44 years, Joe; mother-in-law, Edna; eight children: Mitchell, Berry, Kelly, Abby, Julie, Kim, Cassie and Heather; and lots and lots of in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A picnic will be planned for spring.

Ryan Burton Arrowood
January 21, 1995 - December 22, 2005
Ryan Burton Arrowood, 9, of Battlement Mesa, passed away because of an injury sustained in an automobile accident on Dec. 22 in Casa Grande, Ariz.
A memorial service will take place at noon Friday, Dec. 31, at Crown Peak Baptist Church in Battlement Mesa with Pastor Rick Van Vleet officiating.
Ryan was born to Robert Burton Arrowood and Barbara Ann Arrowood in Spencer, Iowa. Ryan attended Bea Underwood Elementary School in Battlement Mesa. Ryan enjoyed school, soccer, and especially being with his family and friends.
Ryan was preceded in death by his father, Robert Burton Arrowood, on March 25, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents.
Ryan is survived by his mother, Barbara Arrowood, of Battlement Mesa; his sister, Nicole Arrowood, of Battlement Mesa; and his brothers, Brandon Swartzendruber, of Grand Junction, and Jerod Arrowood and family, of Rifle. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Linda and Bill McKinley and his cousin Elli McKinley, of Glenwood Springs; his aunt Penny Lidman, Debby and Jerry Marlow, and Leanne Arrowood, all of Spencer, Iowa; and many, many great-aunts and -uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Monroe Calkins
July 10, 1911 - Dec. 29, 2004
Kenneth was born July 10, 1911, on the Calkins farm in Perry Township, Shiawassee County, Mich. He was the second son of Benjamin and Mildred Calkins (Bridger). He was preceded in death by his brother Gordon. Kenneth entered his rest on Dec. 29, at the age of 93.
The Calkins family consisted of three-generation master farmers. The farm was on Miller Road in Perry and Bennington townships. They were members of the Perry Congregational Church, where Ken served as church clerk and often contributed to the maintenance of the building.
Kenneth was a 70-year veteran member of the IOOF Lodge 206 in Perry, Mich., and also a member of the Seven Stars Rebekah Lodge 91 in Carbondale. Aviation was one of his prime interests. As a private pilot he received great pleasure in "taking people up" for their first flight over the beautiful landscape of Central Michigan.
Married to Carol Jacobs (Hogan) in 1970, he moved to Aspen in 1985, where they lived on Missouri Heights overlooking the Roaring Fork Valley. They attended the Glenwood Springs Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where Ken served as a deacon and contributed much to various building projects.
During his last years he spent many hours crocheting rag rugs, with his dog, Ricky, by his side and Kitzy, the cat, in his lap.
Kenneth is survived by his wife; stepson Rodney Jacobs and his wife Niki of Aspen; stepson John Jacobs, his wife Anita and their two children, Greg and Alyssa, of Mission Viejo, Calif.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan.1, at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 2314 Blake Ave., Glenwood Springs. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Roselawn Cemetery

Charlette Jean Pascuzzi
July 21, 1932 - November 15, 2004
Charlette Jean Pascuzzi died Monday, Nov. 15, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. She was a resident of Eagle and was 72.
Born in Galveston, Texas, on July 21, 1932, she spent her childhood in Amarillo, Texas, where she attended Amarillo High School. In 1951, while working at Borden's Ice Cream Store in Amarillo, she met Conrad Raymond Pascuzzi. They married on April 21, 1952.
Charlette and Conrad subsequently lived in Denver, Salt Lake City and San Diego, where she worked for Allied Van Lines as manager of the tariff department. She also served as president of the Interstate Movers Association of San Diego.
In 1978 they moved to Vail. Shortly thereafter they purchased a home in Eagle. Charlette had worked for the Eagle County clerk's office, the town of Avon planning department and, most recently, had served as the collections investigator for the 5th Judicial District Court in Eagle.
Charlette was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mickie Gathright of Parachute. She is survived by her loving husband of Eagle, her brother, William L. Bryant of Melbourne, Fla., her sister, Colleen Kline of Glenwood Springs, and her brother-in-law, Ray Pascuzzi of Yucaipa, Calif.
Other survivors include 11 nieces and nephews: Michael Morgan of Glenwood Springs; Bill and Laura Bryant, Nancy and Joseph Cimino, and Madeleine and Tim Liscum of Melbourne; Pat and Al Smith of Yucaipa, and Sandra and Chuck Richardson of McMinnville, Ore.
Additionally, her survivors include 10 great-nieces and -nephews: Ashley, Sarah, Kathleen, Francisca, Sebastian, Madison and Will in Melbourne; Denise and Kim in Yucaipa; and Raymond in Las Vegas, as well as four great-great--nieces and -nephews: Ryan and Michael in Las Vegas, and Kelly and Brian in McMinnville.
Charlette's extended family also includes her aunt, Odris Aldrich, her cousin, Joanne Adams of Amarillo, and Merche Domeno and her family, Melinda, Joaquin, Nicholas, and Natalia, all of Melbourne.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Community United Methodist Church, 138 Howard St., Eagle. Juan J. Vigil
May 6, 1922 - November 2, 2004
Juan J. Vigil, longtime resident of Glenwood Springs, passed away at his home Tuesday, Nov. 2, of a short illness. He was 82.
He was born and raised in Chacon, N.M., and later moved to Colorado, where he spent the remainder of his life. On March 4, 1950, he married Adelina Baros.
Juan was a carpenter, and after his retirement spent most of his time working in his beloved yard keeping it immaculate and his roses beautiful.
He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Lena, in May 2001. Juan is survived by six children: Johnny Vigil of Glenwood Springs; Geneva Rimbert of Leadville; Elaine Dwyer of Paso Robles, Calif.; Darrell Vigil of Rifle; Sandra Owens, of Meeker, and Yorba Vigil, of Glenwood Springs. He is also survived by four stepdaughters: Julia Leyba, of Leadville, Mary Leyba, of Chacon, N.M., Claudia Dunn, of Incline Village, Nev., and LeNora Brooks, of New Castle; and by 33 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Lena, in May 2001.
