Willard K. Cordill

Willard K. Cordill died on Sunday, Oct. 17, at his home in Carbondale. He was 80.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, and noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Farnum-Holt Funeral Home, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs. A memorial service will follow Saturday's visitation at 1 p.m. with Patty Harris and Jeff Carlson officiating. Burial will be at Rosebud Cemetery
in Glenwood Springs.
Willard was born June 12, 1924, in Eckley, where he spent his childhood, to parents Earl and Myrtle Cordill. He graduated from Eckley High School and served in the U.S. Army. Willard married Virginia Callicotte on Oct. 2, 1950. He previously resided in Evergreen and Denver and lived in Carbondale for 18 years.
He retired with 40 years of public service and was a member of Garden Home Grange for 60 years and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Willard enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family and friends.
Willard is survived by his wife; son, Woody Cordill; four daughters, Judy Kopulos, Karen Pakiser, Anne Harrington, and Gini Brown; and son-in-laws, Robert Kopulos, Paul Harrington, and Tim Brown. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and too many special friends to mention. Willard is preceded in death by brothers Parley and Lyle Cordill and a son-in-law, Donald Pakiser.

Charles "Chuck" John Franchuk
October 7, 1952 - October 16, 2004
Charles "Chuck" John Franchuk of Rifle died Saturday, Oct. 16, in Mesa County in a motorcycle accident. He was 52.
Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Rifle Funeral Home, 1400 Access Road. Burial will take place at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery
in New Hradec, N.D. A church service in celebration of his life is pending in North Dakota.
Chuck was born Oct. 7, 1952, in Dickenson, N.D., the son of Louis and Mary (Zink) Franchuk. He spent his childhood in North Dakota and served in the military. Chuck married Susan Aus on Aug. 23, 1986. They divorced and later remarried on June 14, 2003.
He was a member of the Catholic church, National Rifle Association, Wind Riders, and the ABATE Club in North Dakota. Chuck was a tool pusher for the oil rigs by profession and resided in Rifle for six years. He loved to ride his motorcycle, was a complete outdoorsman, loved his family, and was a friend to many. He will be missed by all his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Justin Franchuk and wife, Gina, of Rifle, Chuck Franchuk and Ashley of North Dakota, and John Franchuk of Rifle; one daughter, Kelle Franchuk of Rifle; five brothers, Don, John, Jim, Lewis, and Kenny Franchuk; four sisters, Elsie Privatsky, Irene Roder, Jane Holler, and Pat Franchuk; one special sister, Sandy Schaefer; and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Jane; and one grandchild. Jimmie Francis Shroyer
October 30, 1934 - October 18, 2004
Jimmie Francis Shroyer died Monday, Oct. 18, in Rifle. He was 69. A church service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at First Christian Church of Rifle with the Rev. Dene Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery
in Rifle.
He was born Oct. 30, 1934, in Erick, Okla., the son of James Park and Frances V. (Plunk) Shroyer. Jimmie spent his childhood in Oklahoma and later served in the military. He married Velma Hendricks in Glenwood Springs on Feb. 27, 1967.
Jimmie came to Colorado as a young boy and learned to fish and hunt in this beautiful state. He became a hard-working husband and father, driving for Estes Trucking, running a blade for Garfield County, and serving as a maintenance man for the Aspen Club. Jimmie loved the outdoors and four-wheeling. For anyone in need of a helping hand, he was there first and all who had the privilege of knowing him knew that. As his circle of friends and extended family grew, he accepted all unconditionally. His biggest and brightest smile no doubt came from children. He will be remembered as a quiet man who loved his family and friends foremost.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Jimmy Shroyer Jr. and wife, Karen, of Montana, Michael Park Shroyer and wife, Karen, of Rifle, Eugene Andrews and wife, Connie, of Craig, and Ronnie Eugene Andrews and wife, Shirley, of Rifle; a daughter, Pamela Jean Stringfield and husband, David, of Rifle; a brother, Robert Shroyer and wife, Lila, of Grand Junction; a sister, Verona Osborne and husband, Stuart, of Rangely; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Rifle Funeral Home, 1400 Access Road, is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Jimmy, Mike and Terrance Shroyer, and Michael Shroyer Jr., Eugene and Ronnie Andrews, Dean Stringfield, and Mike Lucero. Margie L. Kirkhuff-Carmichael

Margie L. Kirkhuff-Carmichael died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. She was 79. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Rosebud Cemetery
in Glenwood Springs.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Carmichael of Grand Junction; a son, Jadon Kirkhuff, of Grand Junction; a brother, Glen Vaughn of Henderson, Texas; and two sisters, Joyce Burkhard of Hollister, Calif., and Gin Jaurequi of El Centro, Calf.

Ralph C. Lowe
November 24, 1916 - October 22, 2004
Ralph C. Lowe, a resident of Rifle for the past 13 years, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004.
Mr. Lowe was born in Roscoe, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1916, to Thomas Walter Lowe and Roxie Ada Smith. Mr. Lowe graduated from Handley High School in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a World War II veteran, and he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio.
Mr. Lowe lived for more than 40 years in New York. He owned a jewelry store in Greenwich Village. He was active in off-Broadway theatrical groups.
Mr. Lowe is survived by four sisters. They include Janie Gerbaz and husband, Del, of Glenwood Springs; Margie Maxwell and husband, George, of Austin, Texas; Irene Bogel of Fort Worth; and Dolores Hand of Everman, Texas. Mr. Lowe is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Larry and Molly Gerbaz of Carbondale, and their children, Heidi, Jeremy and Leslie Gerbaz; Cecile Callier and Jesse Vormann of Westminister; Jordan Callier of Greeley; and Janice and Barry Gilbert of Sugar Land, Texas, and their children, Christine and Carissa Gilbert.
Funeral services are pending at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Fort Worth.

Briece A. Arlian
March 13, 1908 - November 1, 2004
Briece A. Arlian, 96, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, in Yuma, Colo.
Briece was born March 13, 1908, to Laurent and Josephine Arlian in the village of Saguignod near Aosta, Italy. He arrived in America with his mother and two sisters, Margaret and Jennie, in 1914 one day after his sixth birthday. Two sisters, Palmira and Linda, were born in Aspen after the move to America. He grew up on a ranch on Little Woody Creek near Aspen. He married Della Stringer on May 16, 1942. In 1946 they bought the Arlian Ranch at El Jebel (which is now the Blue Lake subdivision), where they raised a family of six children and ranched until 1966. He lived in the El Jebel area until 1986, then moved to Denver to be closer to his children.
Briece is survived by four sons: Douglas and his wife, Sharon, of Anchorage, Alaska, Larry and Nancy of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Ronald and Shalah of Broomfield, and Alvin of Foxfield; a daughter, Elaine and Ray Nieslanik of Yuma; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Nelson of El Jebel; four nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Briece was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years; daughter Peggy; daughter-in-law Dottie; and sisters Margaret Arlian, Palmira Favre and Jennie Arlian.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Farnum-Holt Funeral Home, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs, with interment in Red Butte Cemetery

Irene Bretz
December 6, 1922 - November 14, 2004
Irene Bretz was born to Richard Leander and Minnie (Lohoff) Morgan on a farm near Dighton, Kan., on Dec. 6, 1922. She attended rural grade school for several years, then completed high school in the Dighton school system in 1941. On Aug. 24, 1941, she married Gerald Bretz, who was engaged in teaching and farming. After her husband was called to service, she followed him to California and back to Kansas. In California, she worked at various jobs, attended UCLA, and worked in a defense plant until the end of the war. After the war they moved to Wichita, Kan. After living in Wichita for 10 years, they moved to Scott City, Kan., and stayed there for 25 years, where she had a small business and was also a licensed real estate sales woman.
Upon retirement in 1982 the couple moved to Glenwood Springs, where they built a house and had spent the winters traveling. ln 2000, Irene began suffering from spinal stinosis, which became increasingly painful. She died of complications on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Janet Kollman, of Woodston, Kan., and a grandson, Martin Kollman, of Hays, Kan.

Joyce Ann Wellerd
January 5, 1939 - November 13, 2004
Joyce Wellerd (Joyce to her friends) died peacefully Saturday, Nov. 13, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
She was born Jan. 5, 1939, in Denver. Joyce was the daughter of Fredrick J. Wellerd and Lillian Eunice (Gray) Wellerd. She moved to Grand Junction at the age of 8 and remained there until 1999 when she moved to Carbondale.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, mother, and sister, Dorothy Morin. She is survived by three sisters: Lorraine Fabrey, of Lakewood, Linda Weigland, of Denver, and Patty Dean, of Grants Pass, Ore.
Joyce's favorite pastime was listening to music and "moving to the beat." She also enjoyed road trips, long walks, shopping, having her nails done, sipping a good cup of coffee, and people watching.
Joyce will be missed by her many friends, her family and by the residents and staff of Mountain Valley Developmental Services who have come to depend on the sweet, serene smile she has shared with us for the past five years. She will be fondly remembered as a very happy woman with a sweet disposition and a quiet sense of grace.

Evelyn O. Rehmann
March 2, 1917 - November 22, 2004
Evelyn O. Rehmann of Carbondale passed away Monday, Nov. 22, in Glenwood Springs at the age of 87.
Evelyn was born in Chicago on March, 2, 1917, to parents who immigrated from Denmark. She married Niels Hargen Ohlrich who passed on in 1971, and Harold Rehmann who passed on in 1990. She lived in Illinois, California, and Maryland before settling with her sons in Colorado in 1997. Evelyn worked as an executive secretary for many years both in Illinois and California, and loved to sew and cook at home. She spent her final days at Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale.
She is survived by her sons, Warren Ohlrich of Basalt and Jim Ohlrich of Grand Junction; her sister, Betty-Ellen Mason of Schaumburg, Ill.; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in various locations.
All her family will greatly miss her and cherish her long and wonderful life.

Eugenia (Jean) M. Colibert
May 4, 19O9 — November 9, 2004
Eugenia (Jean) M. Colibert passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the La Villa Grande Nursing Home in Grand Junction.
She was born to Frank Buelah Fouts on May 4, l9O9, in Salina, Kan. She attended Wichita North High School in Wichita, Kan. She later married Ed Colibert, and the two of them went to Honolulu right after Pearl Harbor. Ed worked in the shipyards and Jean worked for the USO, planning many events for the shipyard personnel and the army and navy men and women. After the war, they returned to Norfolk, Va., where Ed continued his work as supervisor for the shipyards and Jean became a distributor for the Surplus Property Utilization Division for the U.S. Government. She retired from that job in 1972 and continued living in Arlington, Va., where she was active with the National Christian Church in Washington, D.C.
In 1989 she moved to Denver where she was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Englewood. After 10 years of severe health problems, she moved to Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale to be near her niece, Connie McCrudden. After four years there, she moved to Heritage Senior Homes in Grand Junction and was looked after by her great-niece, Randi Garcia.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Eri Fouts, nephew, Dick Fouts, and great nephew Rick Fouts. Her husband, Ed Colibert, died in 1956 at the age of 48.
Immediate family includes another niece, Anne Davison, great-niece Randi Garcia, great-nephews Rod Garcia, Frank Fouts, Tom Fouts and Mathew Davison and many great-great-nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service sometime this summer at Mount Olivet Cemetery
in Kansas City.
James Harold Coon
December 2, 1927 - November 25, 2004
James Harold Coon passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 25, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs after a long illness. He was 76.
James was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Maryland, N.Y., the son of Harold and Adelaide (Van Slyke) Coon. He married Betty Jane Mabie on August 23, 1947, in Worcester, N.Y.
He was a truck driver for 35 years for numerous companies, retiring in 1989 and moving to Rifle in 1995.
He is survived by five sons and seven daughters: Edward and Pat Coon of Sorrento, Fla.; Stephen Coon of Palm Bay, Fla.; Ann and Alan Wetsell of Peyton, Colo.; Susan and Duane Krutz of Fountain, Colo.; David Coon and Arlene and Danny Dent, all of Rifle; Jon and Tracey Coon of Worcester; Karen and Scott Spencer of Wake Forest, N.C.; Sandra Coon of Auburn, N.Y.; Linda Larson of San Antonio; Diane and Steve Rogers of Denver, and Deforest J. and Lynn Coon of Shallotte, N.C. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Coon, and grandsons Aaron Dennis Layman and Kyle Lee Adair.

Memorial contributions in honor of James Edward Nimon, who passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, in Glenwood Springs, should be made to the Eagle County Historical Society and the Greater Eagle Fire District. Lois Hayes passed away, Tuesday, Nov. 23, in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 82. A memorial service will take place Saturday, Dec. 4, in Tucson.
She was born in Rifle on Dec. 18, 1921, the daughter of Carl and Zona Porter. She previously lived in Gypsum, New Castle and Grand Junction.
Hayes is survived by four sons and three daughters, Carl Hayes of Norwood, N.Y.; Jerry Hayes of Crawford, Colo.; Bill Hayes of Gypsum; Ron Hayes of Rifle; and Judith Lovjooi, Becky Slunaker and Lisa Chavez, all of Tucson. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: James Porter of La Grange, Ga.; Bill Porter of Sweet Home, Ore.; and Maxine Frank and Margaret MacDonnell of Grand Junction. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert "Tuffy" Hayes, and son Glenn James Hayes.

Mary C. Johnson passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Glen Valley Care Center in Glenwood Springs. She was 73. A private family memorial is planned.
Mary was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Denver to John and Mary (Herrington) Miller. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Denver and attended The College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. From 1965 to 2004, she was a delicatessen manager and checker in Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.
During her life, Mary most enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hughes (Ron) of Glenwood Springs; sons Matt Johnson (Kathy) of Lakewood, John Johnson, of Littleton, and Will Johnson, of Glenwood Springs; a brother, John Miller, of Seattle; grandchildren Chris Hughes, of Boulder, Kelly Osuna, of Aurora, Rachel, Kyle and Emily Johnson, of Lakewood, and Zach Johnson, of Grand Junction; and a great-grandchild, Chloe Osuna. She is also survived by longtime friends Debbie MacDonald and Nelda Welle.
She is preceded in death by a sister, Janet Popovitch.

Sandra Mary Burwell
March 8, 1942 - December 3, 2004
Sandra (Sandy) Mary Burwell, of Rifle, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction.
She was born March 8, 1942, in Buffalo, N.Y. Sandy graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1963 and was certified as a registered nurse in January of 1964, serving at St. Francis Hospital for the next two years. She married John Burwell at Fort Benning, Ga., on May 23, 1964. She continued her nursing career when they moved to Southern California, working as a staff nurse in obstetrics at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa for the next 14 years. Following their move to western Colorado, she continued her medical career in the labor and delivery department at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs until the early 1990s.
In 1987, she was named a school district nurse for Garfield School District Re-2 in Rifle until her retirement in 2003. Sandy received a bachelor of arts degree in professional arts from St. Joseph's College in Standish, Maine, in September 1992 and earned National School Nurse Certification in 1993. A dedicated professional and teacher, she also served as a prepared childbirth instructor in California and Colorado, a pregnant teenager class instructor, and a new parent education instructor and first aid teacher for Colorado Mountain College. Sandy was a counselor with the Family Visitor Program in Glenwood Springs for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years; five sons: John (Monique), of Grand Junction, Patrick (Barbara), of Rifle, Timothy, of San Francisco, Jason (MinKyoung), serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq, and James (Dana), of Rifle; one daughter, Amy (Lucas), of Key West, Fla.; sisters Diane, of Buffalo, and Fay Ellen, of Columbus, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren: Andrew, Johnny, Kenny, Olivia, Erin, Kayla, Shara, Alecsa, Mackenzie, Allison and Caraline.
She greatly enjoyed being with and spoiling her grandchildren, quilting, knitting, cross stitching, RVing, and reading. She was an usher and eucharistic bread baker at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rifle, where a memorial mass will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7.
