Bryan Howlett
Bryan Roper Howlett, 17, of Ignacio, Colorado passed away at his home on January 27, 2008 as the result of an accident.
Bryan was born in Durango, Colorado on March 22, 1990 to Bob and Tracey Howlett. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered at a later date in the mountains he loved so much. Bryan was attending the Reach Program in Bayfield expected to graduate this year and pursuing his dream of being a Rodeo Bullfighter. He had just received his Professional Bullfighters Certification in Oklahoma City, OK. Bryan grew up in the area with friends in the Beaver Creek 4-H Club, Bayfield baseball teams, as a member of the youth group at the Pine Valley Four Square Church and the Bayfield Pee Wee through High School Wrestling teams. Bryan was an awesome artist and expressed his personality and sense of humor in a way that will always be cherished. Bryan was preceded in death by his grandfather Don Howlett. He is survived by his mother and father , his brother Justin , of the family home.
His grandparents Jean Howlett of Bayfield, Shirley and Larry Pennington of Farmington, NM and Jerry Cox of Tucson Arizona. Aunt Peggy and uncle Eric Copeland and Family, Aunt Jennie Howlett, Uncle Jim Howlett, Uncle Ed, Aunt Hanne Howlett and Family, Aunt Dawn, Uncle Gary Cox and family, aunt Stacey and Randy Juckes, and Makayla, Aunt Nikki Pennington and aunt Destre Biemond. Many friends and Rodeo buddies around the country.
A memorial service will be held at the Ignacio Events Center on Thursday January 31, 2008 at 4 pm. To be followed by a potluck dinner after the service. A "Bryan Howlett Memorial Fund " has been established at any First National Bank of Durango.
He will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who loved him.
Lorence (Larry) L. Smith
Lorence (Larry) L. Smith, 73, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Mercy Regional Medical Center of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Los Pinos Fire Protection Building at 275 Browning Ave in Ignacio.
A potluck dinner will be held afterward.
Larry was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Collbran, Colorado, the son of Ethel Barker Smith and Kenneth Smith. After buying a ranch at the foot of the HD Mountains, the Smiths moved to Bayfield from northern Colorado. Larry attended school in both Bayfield and Ignacio.
After high school, Larry joined the United States Navy where he served on the LST 1159 in Korea.
Upon returning home, Larry worked on the family ranch with his father, drove truck, and worked in the gas and oil fields before following his love of leather crafts by attending Denver’s Emily Griffith Opportunity School to learn shoe repair. After losing a shoe repair shop in Delta, Colo. to fire, Larry attended and graduated from Oklahoma State Tech’s boot and saddle making school.
Larry returned to La Plata County, where he and his father, Ken Smith, opened Pine River Boots (later Custom Boots by Larry Smith) in Ignacio. He was a master craftsman who practiced his craft for over 50 years making thousands of made-to-measure cowboy boots and served a worldwide clientele. He was one of fewer than 100 boot makers in North America who made cowboy boots by hand; a three-month process.
In 2000, Larry turned his business into a boot making school. Over the years, numerous articles were written about him; he was honored by several awards by his peers; and he displayed his craft by the invitation of the Smithsonian Institute at the United States Bicentennial Arts and Crafts Fair in Washington, D.C. in 1976.
Larry’s hobbies included leather stamping, silversmithing, martial arts, woodworking, and gardening. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping, and had a soft spot for animals of all kinds. Larry built a 30’ by 50’ addition to the family home by laying adobe bricks that he made himself.
Larry was passionate and a perfectionist. He often said that over the years he had made only seven pairs of perfect boots, then he would say unfortunately all the boots were for the left foot.
Larry married Pauline Kennedy on June 20, 1958, in Bayfield and they had four children. They divorced in 1977. Larry married Cheryl Bruyette on June 28, 1980, in Grand Junction, and they raised her four children from a previous marriage.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Ken, in 1984.
Larry is survived by his wife Cheryl; his mother, Ethel B. Smith, of Ignacio; his daughter, Lois Moss of Albuquerque; sons Kenneth Smith of Ignacio, Bill Smith of Denver, and Lee Smith of Ignacio; stepdaughters Dawn Montoya of Fort Collins, Michelle Murray of Doylestown Penn., Kristina Rodilosso of Henderson Nev. and William Bruyette of Davis, Calif. He also is survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and one step- great-grandchild.

Oran Ray “Spike” Mullenix
Oran Ray Mullenix, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colorado. A Recitation of the Rosary was held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008. A memorial mass was held on Feb. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Cremation occurred at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Mr. Mullenix was born May 12, 1919, in Paonia, Colo., the son of Joseph and Bertha Mullenix. He grew up around Breen and Durango and graduated from Durango High School. Spike served in the Army during World War II as a mechanic in the infantry. Upon his discharge from the Army, he began ranching in the Ignacio area and was married to Petra Romero.
As the operator of a ranch and due to his military training, he was a “ jack of all trades, and Mr. Fix it” around the ranch, according to his family.
Spike was of the generation that he did most everything needed to run the ranch himself, including construction, auto mechanic repair, and electrician tasks. He enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, and working on his cars.
He is survived by his wife, Petra Mullenix of Ignacio; stepsons Leroy G. Romero of Salt Lake City, Utah and Juan Romero of Ignacio; stepdaughter Barbara Miramontes of San Francisco; a brother, Jack Squires of Allison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Corol Marie Hanson
Corol Marie Hanson died Feb. 18, 2008.
She was born in Arlington, Calif. on Aug. 4, 1925. She graduated from Woodbury College and married Carl Hanson, Jr. on the Bride and Groom radio show on July 10, 1947. They were married for 60 years.
Corol was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she was involved in numerous activities.
Corol is survived by her husband Carl of Bayfield; daughters Lucy Marie, Cindy Donelan and her husband Bill, and Cherie Hanson of Bayfield; brother, Bob Briggs and his wife Shirley; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one nephew.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Durango.

Estrellita Peña
A lifelong resident of Arboles, Estrellita Peña died Feb. 16, 2008, after a 12-year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Peña was born January 25, 1939 in Arboles, the daughter of Nestor Lopez and Lousita Garcia. In February of 1958, she married Joseph Baker Peña, and they had six children.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Angela and Preston Abeyta of Ignacio, Ernestine and Samuel Maez of Tiffany, Trinidad and Amos Martinez of Allison; sons and daughters-in-law Mossimo and Shasta Peña, Bernard and Monica Peña and Kes Peña, all of Ignacio; brothers Tony Garcia of Delta, Joe Garcia of Pagosa Springs, and Joe Lopez of Globe, Ariz.; sister Bernie Lopez of Superior, Ariz.; her companion, Randy Fletcher; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends she called family.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, her son Melvin Peña in 1985, her sister Jane Tuck in 2003 and her sister Faye Romero in 2006.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at St. Peter - St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles. Burial will occur at Rosa Cemetery
in Arboles. Visitation was at Hood Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008. Recitation of the Rosary was that evening.
Everett Clark
Everett Clark, a resident of Bayfield, died on Feb. 21, 2008 at The Valley Inn in Mancos. He was 88. Cremation will take place with a memorial service being planned for a later date.
Mr. Clark was born to David and Emma Schroth Clark on Nov. 6, 1919, in Bennett, Colo. He served his country during WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps. Mr. Clark was a retired mechanic, working in the Operating Engineers Union. He was a member of the Church of Christ, a lifetime member of the VFW, and the Pine River Senior Citizens.
Mr. Clark’s greatest enjoyments in life were his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, dancing and telling stories.
Everett Martin Clark is survived by two daughters Kaye Phelps of Bayfield and Judi Palmer of Denver; a sister, May Lombard of Alabama; six grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Lavon, second wife Elva, and two brothers Dan and Ray.
Owen “Papa Jim” J. Richmond
Owen “Papa Jim” J. Richmond, 71, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Pine River Valley Baptist Church. Chaplain Earl Caudill will officiate. Burial will occur at Ignacio East Cemetery
in Ignacio. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Hood Mortuary in Durango.
Mr. Richmond was born Sept. 7, 1936, in Dexter, N.M., the son of Rex R. and Vivian L. Richmond.
His family moved to Ignacio when he was eight, where they bought a homestead called Fair Field Farms from the Ritters. His family had a dairy and he and his brothers would milk 50 head of dairy cattle before going to school. He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1956.
After graduation, he attended Pipeline Welding School in Tulsa, Okla. On February 13, 1965, he married Virginia L. Clark in Roswell, N.M. They were married for 43 years. He was a rancher for his entire life. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he owned and operated a feedlot. He owned the Ignacio Sale Barn from 1980 to1995.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Richmond of Ignacio; son Jeff Richmond of Ignacio; daughter Michelle (Susie) Richmond of Ignacio; four grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Richmond of Chino Valley, Ariz.; and a sister, June Ingle of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jonathan Lee Winlock
Jonathan Lee Winlock, 21, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, NM. A memorial service will be Monday, March 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Ignacio. The Rev. Kelly Winlock of Maranatha Baptist Church will be officiating.
Burial will occur at Oxford Cemetery
in Oxford.
Mr. Winlock was born July 14, 1986, in Durango, Colorado, the son of Michael Winlock and Laura M. Richards. Mr. Winlock grew up in Ignacio and attended school there.
He had recently been working on his GED and was attending the Durango Adult Education Center.
He was employed by the Avis Rental Car Company and had also worked as a carpenter around the area, including Appenzeller’s Construction out of Arboles, and assisted Luke Harrington in handyman services.
He enjoyed all aspects of sports, was an accomplished artist, wrote poetry, cared for animals, liked reading, eating, being with friends and family, Durango Joe’s coffee and working on his fitness. “He was always happy, liked to joke, smile, laugh and talk with everyone,” reminisces his family.
He is survived by his sister, Desarae Winlock; his father, Michael Winlock; his mother Laura M. Richards; grandparents Kelly and Teresa Winlock and Keane and Rena Richards, all of Ignacio, and numerous other family members.
Cora Olive Landreth
Cora Olive Landreth, 78, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at her home in Bayfield. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Pine Valley Foursquare Church. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery
in Bayfield.
Cora was born March 7, 1931 in Durango to Martin Ray and Frances Inez Thayer Landreth. Cora grew up in Bayfield, where she graduated from Bayfield High School. She married Donald Lee Farley Dec. 20, 1950. To this marriage was born Connie Gail on Nov. 30, 1951.
Cora spent part of her early married life traveling with her husband, who worked with the U.S. Government. She eventually moved back to the Bayfield area with her daughter, where she remained until her death. Cora, who was legally blind, was no stranger to those who knew her. She was eager to help those in need and was a big volunteer in the little town of Bayfield. Cora volunteered her time at the fire department, senior center helping delivering meals, and doing all she could for others. Cora was an avid walker and was known to walk up to six miles a day. She loved her Savior Jesus Christ and was an active member of her church. She served her Lord faithfully for many years as best as she knew how. She loved her family dearly, although she was separated from them. Her heart was always with them and they were in her prayers.
Cora is survived by her daughter Connie Record and husband Don of Windsor, Mo.; a brother, Martin R. Landreth, Jr. and wife Tokuko of Colorado Springs; sister Lois McInnes of Cortez; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
A private family viewing will be held Monday Nov. 23, 2009 at Hood Mortuary Chapel at 4 p.m.
She was preceded in death by her father Martin Landreth, Sr., and her mother Frances Thayer and husband Donald Farley.
