William R. Flowers
March 8, 1921 - November 23, 2003
PAONIA - William R. Flowers, a resident of Paonia, Colorado, died at Delta County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, November 23, 2003. He was 82.
No services are planned.
William R. Flowers was born on March 8, 1921, to William E. and Eva (Hughes) Flowers in St. Anne, Illinois. He spent his childhood in St. Anne and attended school there.
William married MaryElen Ruf on May 16, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. She survives. They moved from Chicago to Banning, California, and Arizona before moving to Paonia in March of 2003.
Mr. Flowers was a cabinet maker and enjoyed working with wood. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served his country until 1945.
William saw active duty overseas for seventeen months in Hawaii, Palva, Carolines, New Caledonia, Philippines, and Japan. He received two battle stars.
Those grateful to have shared in William’s life include his wife of over sixty - one years, Maryelen Flowers of Paonia, CO; a brother, Eugene Flowers of Harvey, IL; and five sisters: Wilma Oakerland of Harvey, IL, Viola Peterson, Jeanette Patterson, Janelle Nicholson, and Paulette all of Illinois; nieces: Patricia Brown of Paonia, CO, Sandra Day of Las Vegas, NV; nephews: Thomas Corry of Flagstaff, AZ, and Donald Corry of Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marie Elizabeth Flowers; six brothers and sisters.

Agnes K. Johnson
April 21, 1912 - November 23, 2003
PAONIA - Paonia resident, Agnes Katherine Johnson, died Sunday, November 23, 2003, at the Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. She was 91.
Services will be held at a later date.
Agnes Katherine Gardner was born April 21, 1912, in Carbondale, Kentucky, to the late James and Ida (Cairrol) Gardner. She spent her childhood in Illinois and graduated from high school in Johnston City, Illinois with the class of 1930.
Agnes married Robert Johnson on February 14, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He survives. They moved to Paonia six years ago, after having lived in Deltona, Florida for 14 years.
Mrs. Johnson, a homemaker, was a member of the United Methodist Church in Paonia. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and a member of P.E.O. Her interests included needle point, sewing, different handcrafts and making her own clothing.
Those grateful to have shared in Agnes’ life include her husband, Robert Johnson of Paonia, CO; three daughters: Linda Smith and her husband Richard of Paonia, CO, Barbara Michal of Riverside, CA, and Marilyn Millay and Ole Christianson of Mountain Home, AR. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, twelve great - grandchildren and several great - great - grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Agnes was also preceded in death by two sisters: Euvena Lawson and Eve West; three brothers: Bill, Roy, and Floyd Gardner; and three grand - children: Larry Zahnen, Jerry Zahnen and Kristopher Michal.

Shirley M. Baker
November 7, 1935 - November 23, 2003
HOTCHKISS - Longtime Hotchkiss resident, Shirley M. Baker, died Sunday, November 23, 2003, at Paonia Care and Rehab Center in Paonia, Colorado. She was 68.
A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 28th at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss. James Gall will preside. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery
in Hotchkiss.
Shirley May Simons was born on November 7, 1935, in Denver, Colorado, to the late Henry and Mable (Martin) Simons. She spent her childhood and attended school in Denver.
Shirley married Stanley Baker on September 14, 1957, in Denver, Colorado. They moved to Hotchkiss in 1973, coming from Bear Creek Valley, Colorado. He survives.
Mrs. Baker was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hotchkiss and the Barrow Mesa Club. She enjoyed painting, drawing, and sculpting. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of over 46 years, Stanley Baker of Hotchkiss; two sons, Terry Baker and Steve Baker, both of Hotchkiss; a daughter, Robin Baker of Denver; and four grandchildren: Andrea McRobbie, Nicole Baker, Stanley Baker and Jessi Baker.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Baker and a half brother, Jimmy Ryan.

Keith L. Farrington
February 13, 1922 - November 20, 2003
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Keith L. Farrington, died at his residence on Thursday, November 20, 2003. He was 81.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the Delta City Cemetery.
Keith Leroy Farrington was born on February 13, 1922, to George A. and Mary E. (Moore) Farrington in Elkhart, Kansas. He spent his early childhood in Elkhart and attended schools there. He moved to Delta in 1969. Mr. Farrington had never married.
Keith, who was employed in the automotive and oil refinery field, was a mechanic and welder by trade. He belonged to the National Rifleman’s Association. His interests included hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include three nephews: David F. Farrington of Gymon, OK, Stout Farrington and George “Sack” Farrington both of Elkhart, KS; two nieces: Rose Hurt and Gloria Bioz both of Fayetteville, AR. He is further survived by close friends: Ki Nelson and his wife Gwen, Janice Keune and Jim Keune all of Delta, CO, and Noxie Harder of Four Corners, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Martin VanBuren Farrington.

Mary S. Rozman
November 17, 1913 - November 22, 2003
“Homemaker”
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Mary S. Rozman, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Willow Tree Care Center in Delta. She was 90.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 25th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta, Colorado, with Rev. Mark Bettinger officiating Interment will take place at the Crested Butte Cemetery
in Crested Butte, Colorado, at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the 25th with Father Steve Murray officiating.
Mary Sedmak was born on November 17, 1913, in Crested Butte, Colorado, to Rudolph and Mary (Gallowich) Sedmak. She spent her childhood in Crested Butte and attended schools there.
Mary was joined in marriage with the love of her life, John L. Rozman, Sr., on June 22, 1938, at Crested Butte, Colorado. They just celebrated 65 years of marriage this past June.
Mary and John moved to Delta in 1971, coming from Crested Butte, Colorado. Mary was very active in her Church. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary had been a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta since 1971. Prior to that she was a member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Crested Butte, Colorado. She was also a long time member of the Orchard City Woman’s Club.
Mary’s devotion to her family was of most importance to her. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved to be with her friends and visit with them.
Those grateful to have shared in Mary’s life include her husband, John L. Rozman, Sr. of Delta, CO; three sons: John L. Rozman and his wife Marilyn, Richard Rozman and his wife Donna, and Rudy Rozman and his wife Lois, all of Crested Butte; one sister, Evelyn Mraule of Delta, CO; two brothers: Rudy Sedmak and his wife Emmy, and Joe Sedmak of Crested Butte, CO. She is further survived by five grandchildren and four great - grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and one brother.

Sylviana “Sylvia” Duran
August 1, 1910 - November 20, 2003
DELTA - Longtime forty - eight year Delta resident, Sylviana “Sylvia” Duran, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 93.
Visitation for family and friends is planned for Saturday, November 22rd from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Rosary will be recited by Tom Fresquez and Cindy Livley on Sunday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m., at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 24th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Reverend Mark Bettinger will preside. Burial will follow at the Delta City Cemetery.
Sylviana Gallegos was born on August 1, 1910 in Capulin, Colorado to the late Thomasine and Adela Gallegos. She was raised in the San Luis Valley.
On December 31, 1927, Sylvia was joined in marriage to Louis Duran. They celebrated 68 years of marriage before his death on January 3, 1996.
Sylvia enjoyed crocheting, camping, fishing, playing slot machines in Las Vegas and taking rides in the hills with Louis prior to his death. She also enjoyed shopping with her granddaughters, especially to buy new shoes. Praying the rosary and making pilgrimages to the Santuadio in New Mexico was also very important to her. She loved to visit with family and neighbors. Before traveling out of town, her family was sure to stop by her home and receive a special blessing from her.
Sylvia was an active member of The Local Chapter of V.F.W. Auxiliary, served as President for one year and was also a Gold Star Mother.
Survivors include thirteen children and their spouses: Delfie and Felix Fresquez, Louie and Dolores Duran, Pauline and Conrad Vigil, Josie and Tommy Fresquez, Leo and Ilene Archuleta, Lala and Leo Archuleta, Mary Lee and Augie Terrazas, Lawrence and Geri Duran, Jenny Duran, Tanner and Mai Duran, JoAnn Gallegos, Arthur and Lena Duran and Gloria Quintana. She is further survived by two brothers, Tony and John; four sisters, Molly, Teri, Eleanor and Dora; 58 grandchildren; 109 great grandchildren and 53 great great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Amy Duran, three infant daughters and numerous grandchildren.

Corean Connolly
January 4, 1908 - November 20, 2003
“Known as one of The Sisters”
Silt: Former Cedaredge and Delta resident, Corean Connolly, (also known as one of the sisters) died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at The Just Like Home Assisted Living facility in Silt, Colorado. She was 95.
Funeral services for Corean will be held on Monday, November 24th at 10:30 a.m., at Rocky Mt. Baptist Church, West Exit to Rifle and I – 70, Rifle, Colorado with Pastor Don Wagner of the Fellowship of the Rockies Church officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Delta City Cemetery, Delta, CO. Visitation will be Monday, November 24, 2003 from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the church in Rifle.
Corean was born on January 4, 1908 in Lookebe, Oklahoma to the late James Daniel and Effie May (Henson) Carpenter. Corean graduated from High school in Delta and continued her education at University of Denver in Denver, CO and at the City of Los Angeles College in Los Angeles, California.
Corean married Patrick “Peter” or “Red” Connolly on June 18, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. He preceded her death on Sept. 5, 1953 in Los Angeles, California
Corean was a member of the Fellowship of the Rockies Church in Rifle, Colorado. Mrs. Connolly was an underwriter for Kemper Insurance. She enjoyed her sisters and after the sisters husbands passed away they all moved back in together. Corean enjoyed her church, being around people, watching sports on television, (especially football, baseball) and all kinds of music.
Those grateful to have shared in Corean’s life are three sisters, Sylvia Powers and Ann Cameron of Silt, CO.and Delma Brune of Battlement Mesa, Colorado and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia S. Jones
December 2, 1925 - November 17, 2003
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Cedaredge resident, Virginia S. Jones died Monday, November 17, 2003, at her residence. She was 77.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge. A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 21st at the Chapel of the Cross in Cedaredge. Cheryl Brumbaugh - Cayford will preside. Interment will follow at the Cedaredge Cemetery.
Virginia S. Vagneur was born on December 2, 1925 in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of the late James and Eura (Layton) Vagneur. She attended school at Woody Creek and Aspen, Colorado and graduated from Rio Blanco High School in Meeker, Colorado with the class of 1943. She continued her education at Blair Business College in Colorado Springs.
On March 14, 1948 in Denver, Colorado, Virginia joined Ernest “Lee” Jones in marriage. They moved to Woody Creek where they eventually bought the Woody Creek Store. They also built and operated a mobile home park in conjunction with their store. In 1978, they sold their business and moved to Cedaredge. They celebrated over 52 years of marriage before his death on December 3, 2000.
Possessing an astonishing spirit of generosity and compassion over the span of more than 50 years of marriage, Virginia and her husband had an extraordinary impact on the lives of many individuals. A practice Mrs. Jones continued right until the end of a full and exemplary life.
Virginia retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 31 years, having served as the Postmistress in Woody Creek for 25 years. She was a member of the Delta and Aspen Elks Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles in Aspen, the Moose Lodge of Grand Junction and the Order of Eastern Star. Her interests included cooking, reading, fishing, playing pinnoccle, hunting and camping.
Survivors include two sons: Clark Jones and wife Sherry of Murdock, KS and Kent Jones and wife Jami of Loma, CO; a daughter, Kelly Copple and husband Kenny of New Orleans, LA; and six grandchildren, Amanda Jones of Murdock, KS, Andrew and Brady Copple of New Orleans, LA, Dakota, Kali and Levi Jones of Loma, CO.

Chester Rose
January 18, 1924 - November 14, 2003
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Cedaredge resident, Chester Rose, died Friday, November 14, 2003 at his residence. He was 79.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 21st at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery
of Western Colorado in Grand Junction. Rev. Britton Cottrell will preside. Military Honors will be conducted by the Fort Carson Casualty Office.
Chester Rose was born on January 18, 1924, in Big Flat, Arkansas, to the late Commadore and Lona (Norman) Rose. He spent his childhood and attended school in Big Flat. Chester enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, and was stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon. He then went to the Oakland Army Base in California, and then overseas to the U.S. Constabulary in Bad Herschfeld, Germany. He was also stationed at Schweinfurt and Bad Kissingen, Germany.
On January 20, 1954, Chester married Lydia Ziegler in Kitzingen and Wurzburgh, West Germany. After their marriage they returned stateside to Fort Hood, Texas, but returned in 1957 to Schwabach, Germany. In 1960, he transferred to Fort Irwin, California and in 1964, to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon retirement in 1965, he and Lydia settled to the Western Slope of Colorado, living at one time in Paonia, Palisade, and finally settling in Cedaredge. Chester was a very proud Veteran. During his time in the service, he earned a Good Conduct Medal with 5 Bronze Loops, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with German Clasp and a National Defense Service Medal. He also received several accomondations for his marksmanship.
Chester was a life member of the D.A.V., V.F.W. and the U.S. Constabulary Outpost #8. His interests included: fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, traveling and camping. He also enjoyed woodworking, walking, and making people smile by singing, telling jokes and yodeling. However, his biggest joy was spending time with his beloved family and digging worms with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of over 49 years, Lydia Rose of Cedaredge; three daughters: June Brew and husband Dennis of Cedaredge, Jeanette Rose and Mikey Thomas of Bloomfield, NM, and Juanita Vanderpool and husband Marvin of Clifton, CO; one sister, Charlene Streb and husband Ray of Conway, AR; and a brother, Lester Rose of Texas. Chester is further survived by eight grandchildren: Miranda and Britton Cottrell, Corey Brew, Ken and Kendra Vanderpool, Sarah Casey and Chris Casey and wife Patricia; three great grandchildren: April, Jasmine and Rose; and lifelong friends, Patsy and Leroy Hammock, of Gassville, AR.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters: Nadean and Maxine; and three brothers: Mayo, Junior and James Ray.
