Johanna H. Raich
A memorial service was held Saturday, June 15, in Estes Park for Johanna H. Raich, 93, who died earlier this year.
Raich was born in Vienna, Austria on Oct. 26, 1908 to Johann Kubasta and Sophia (Tennenbaum) Kubasta.
She received her medical degree at the University in Innsbruck, Austria and in 1936 married Karl Raich.
Raich was a physician, and in 1954 she came to the United States to practice pediatric medicine for the Department of Public Health in Iowa.
In 1957, she moved to Milwaukee, and in 1977, she moved to Estes Park.
Raich loved the mountains, and, at the age of 69, she climbed Longs Peak. She was a member of the American Medical Association and the Colorado Mountain Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Karl, and sisters Maria Gerstman and Dorthea Rather.
Survivors include sons John C. Raich and Peter C. Raich of Fort Collins and Evergreen, Colo., respectively; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Clayton King
Clayton King, 63, of Estes Park and Ste. Genevieve, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.
King was born on Dec. 24, 1938, in St. Louis, Mo.
He had been employed at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., prior to his retirement.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth, and his best friend, Rhoades Schroeder.
A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, located at Valley Rd. and West Elkhorn Ave. on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m.
Contributions may be made to the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colo.
Robert C. Thomas
Robert C. Thomas, 75, of Glen Haven died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Poudre Valley Hospital.
Thomas was born on Nov. 29, 1926 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Clair Cline Thomas and Velma (Bennett) Thomas.
Thomas received his master’s degree in industrial arts from Colorado State College in 1962. He married Ruth Harrington in Henderson, Nev., on Oct. 12, 1963.
He was a high school teacher, teaching industrial arts classes as well as anthropology. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Thomas built his cabin in Glen Haven in 1956 and, after retiring in 1976, lived there full time. He loved woodworking and boating.
He was a member of the V.F.W., the National Rifle Association and the Glen Haven Association Board.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Alice Haas.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of Glen Haven; sons Steven Thomas of Henderson, Nev., David Harrington of Las Vegas, Nev., and Timothy Harrington of Henderson, Nev.; daughter Rebecca Lorenz of Glen Haven; sister Barbara Thomas-Hunter of Henderson, Nev.; nephews Craig Burgwardt and Kent Burgwardt of Estes Park and Rocky Hill, Conn., respectively; niece Connie Odgers of Henderson, Nev.; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Glen Haven Community Building with Rev. Scott Weber officiating.

Sarah Winter
Sarah "Scat" Winter, a former resident of Estes Park, died in Florida on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002.
Winter was born on April 15, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to Thomas Levitt and Jennie Davidson Levitt. On Feb. 1, 1954, she married Philip Winter in Minneapolis, Minn.
She and her husband owned and operated the M.C.C.A Mail Forwarding Service in Estes Park. She was a member of the Estes Park Summer Residents Association.
Winter was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Jane Winter-Lawson, and by her two brothers.
Services will take place on Friday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of the Rockies. Burial will follow at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at the Timberline Restaurant.

Bob Alsup
Bob Alsup, 80, died in his Estes Park home on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002.
Alsup was born Oct. 18, 1922 in Kopperl, Texas to Erna (Schumann) Alsup and Robert E. Alsup.
Alsup grew up in New Mexico where he graduated from high school. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy. He was sent to school at Harvard University and Notre Dame by the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific theater operations. He finished school prior to his service, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting and political science from the University of New Mexico. He received a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Colorado.
He married Margaret Slattery on June 20, 1946, in Omaha, Neb. He practiced law in St. Francis, Kan. for 16 years and later purchased Cheyenne County State Bank in St. Francis, which he went on to operate for 29 years.
In St. Francis he was a member of the Rotary Club, The Knights of Columbus and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the school board, the city and county boards, and the American Legion.
He was the head of the building committee to build the Catholic Church in St. Francis in 1965.
In 1992 he and his wife purchased a home in Estes Park — a home that they moved to permanently in 1994.
In Estes Park, Alsup was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, the Rotary Club of Estes Park and the Knights of the Belt Buckle.
Alsup served on the Art Center Board and the Estes Park Library Board.
He and his wife spent their winters in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he attended Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church in Carefree, Ariz.
After the couple moved to Estes Park, Alsup enjoyed spending his free time hiking and enjoying the beauty of the area.
He had a particular passion for reading and constant education. He often read aloud the poems of Robert Frost to his wife and children.
He enjoyed woodworking, building and working with his hands.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Alsup of Estes Park; sons Robert Kevin Alsup and his wife Victoria of Phoenix, Ariz., Shawn Christopher Alsup and his wife Dalaina of Sterling, Colo., Eric Michael Alsup and his wife Christina of Florence, Italy, and Joseph Brendan Alsup and his wife Elizabeth of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters Pamela Ann Oster and her husband Henry A. of Ventura, Calif., and Melanie Susan Bandel and her husband Darrell of Overland Park, Kan.; brother Rea Theo Alsup of Louisville, Kent.; sisters Elsie Beth Fryer of Manhattan, Kan., and Ernestine Schotsch of Pittsburg, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the Allnutt Funeral Chapel. A rosary will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Allnutt Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church.

Frances Joan (Jo) Ireland
Frances Joan (Jo) Ireland, 65, a former resident of Estes Park, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002.
Ireland was born on Feb. 3, 1937 in rural Toronto, Kan., to William Arthur Ireland and Ilene (Porter) Ireland.
She graduated from Toronto High School, Emporia State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kan., Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colo., and Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Ore.
After teaching high school in Lane and Perry, Kan., she taught in Elizabeth, Falcon and Kiowa, Colo. In 1969 she began working summers in Estes Park, and in 1974 she moved to Estes Park year-round.
While in Estes Park she worked in resorts, and from 1977 to 1980 she co-owned the Sword and Scroll Bible Bookstore.
She was an active member of the Mountain View Bible Fellowship and served on their Mission Ministry Team.
In 1980, she moved to Portland, Ore., to complete a master’s degree in Bible and to teach at Portland Christian High School.
In the mid 1980s, she returned to Estes Park and worked for the U.S. Forest Service. During that time, she researched an early settlement near Estes Park referred to as Homestead Meadows. Her research is now a Forest Service publication.
In 1991, she moved to Augusta, Kan., to help her sister care for their mother.
In recent years, she had been on the adjunct faculties of Butler County Community College and Wichita State University teaching mathematics. She was a highly-respected instructor and at one point was selected the outstanding teacher of the year.
Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Richardson and her husband Hugh of Augusta, Kan.; nephew Mark Richardson and his wife Lisa of Witchita, Kan.; niece Melody and her husband David Hobson of Lincoln, Neb.; great-nieces Hannah Richardson and Crystal Hobson; great nephew Dashiell Hobson and several cousins.

Joyce K. Van Donselaar
Joyce K. "Joy" Van Donselaar, 57, of Estes Park, died on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the Estes Park Medical Center.
Van Donselaar was born on March 15, 1945, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Herman and Lavina (Nagel) Koster.
She graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in Michigan in 1963. She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and the Parsons School of Business.
She married Ron Van Donselaar on Jan. 20, 1967.
For most of her life, she had been employed in the medical field and enjoyed working in service to others. She was most recently employed at Common Scents Gift Shop in Estes Park.
She was a former resident of Kalamazoo, Mich., and moved to Colorado in 1976. In 1996 she moved to Estes Park.
Van Donselaar was a member of the Rocky Mountain Evangelical Free Church.
She enjoyed interior decorating, painting, and Southwestern and Native American art.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Koster.
Survivors include her husband, Ron Van Donselaar of Estes Park; mother Lavina Koster of Kalamazoo, Mich.; son Kevin Van Donselaar and his wife Karin of Parker, Colo.; daughter Brenda Haaksma and her husband Jon of Parker, Colo.; brother Stan Koster of New Hudson, Mich.; sisters Loraine Kuiper of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Carolyn Yost of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mountain Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Jess Mahon will officiate. A second service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Kalamazoo, Mich.
An open house will be held at the Van Donselaar home on Thursday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. The home is located at 1200 Lakeshore Drive.

Lillian Clark
Lillian Clark, 98, a longtime resident of Raymond Co., formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. and Bradenton Fla., died suddenly in her home on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002.
Clark was born in St. Louis Mo., on Dec. 21, 1904. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clark.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in June 1927. In June 2002 she was fortunate to attend her 75th class reunion.
She taught language arts at Franklin Junior High School in Cedar Rapids for 37 years.
In 1944 she and Leone Sutherland, a fellow teacher and good friend, bought property and built a summer cabin in Raymond, Colo., while attending summer school at Colorado University in Boulder. She lived there for the next 58 years. She lived in Colorado in the summer and spent her winters in Bradenton Fla.
At Paradise Bay Estates she participated in many activities. For 23 years she was editor of the Park Paper.
Clark was a world traveler, an excellent cook and lived life to the fullest. She was active in many professional organizations, a past Matron of Malta chapter and Grand Easter of the Order of Easter Star. For many years she served on the board for the Eastern Star home in Boone, Iowa.
In Allenspark she was an active member of the Hilltop Guild, where for many years she supervised the kitchen for the annual bazaar. Later she served with the Candy Committee.
She was also a member of the Methodist Church and attended the Community Church of Allenspark.
She is survived by her niece Alice Doyle of Chicago, Ill., great nieces and nephews, her friend and companion, Nan Gray and a host of friends.
Services will be held in Bradenton, Fla., on Friday, Jan. 17,2003, and in Allenspark in June.
