Thana Lane Kurrle
Thana Lane Kurrle of Pinewood Springs died Nov. 24, 2001 in Tucson, Ariz.
A long-time resident of Estes Park and Pinewoods Springs, she and her husband Charles "Buzz" Kurrle operated the Taffy Shop with her parents for many years.
Kurrle attended school in Dallas, Texas, Estes Park and Boulder, Colo. She also spent several winters studying Spanish at the University of Guadalajara in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
She married Charles "Buzz" Kurrle of Boulder in 1967 in Estes Park.
Kurrle is survived by her husband, Charles "Buzz" Kurrle" of Pinewood Springs and her mother, Lavona Slack of Estes Park.
As she wished, no services will be held, but the family asks that you "remember her indomitable spirit."
Vera S. Barron
Vera S. Barron, 95, of Loveland died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at North Shore Manor in Loveland after an illness of several months.
Barron was born Jan. 12, 1907, in La Junta, Colo. After graduating from La Junta, she attended Cotner College in Lincoln, Neb., graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1929.
She then taught school in La Junta from 1930 to 1933.
Barron married J. Russell Barron on Jan. 22, 1933 in La Junta. The couple moved to Colorado Springs in 1941, where Vera returned to teaching in 1951. She taught a second-grade class for 15 years and was recipient of the "Teacher of the Year" award. She and her husband moved to Loveland in 1967.
She was a member of the First Christian Church for many years and was past member of the Eastern Star and the National Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed many types of handwork, music, reading, bird watching and was an avid Broncos fan. Her time with her family and friends was her greatest enjoyment.
Barron was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 25, 1996, two brothers, Floyd and Waldo Snyder, and sister Mae Clore.
She is survived by her two daughters, Daphne Farnham and her husband Larry of Glen Haven and Donna Hawthorne and her husband Roy of Loveland. She is also survived by five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three great-great granddaughters all of Loveland and Fort Collins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service Hunter Chapel.
Rev. Ritchie Bibelheimer of Crossroads Covenant Church will be officiating.
Cremation has been conducted.

Harry C. Schwilke
Harry C. Schwilke, 78, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at his home in Whittier, Calif. He was born Dec. 1923 in Longmont, Colo. to Florence and Albert Schwilke.
Schwilke grew up in Estes Park and worked on his father’s truck line until he graduated from Estes Park High School.
The Schwilke family has lived in Estes Park since 1910 and the family still uses the family home as a summer residence.
Schwilke entered the Navy V-5 program in 1942 after World War II had started.
After the war he enrolled at the University of Northern Colorado where he received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education. He moved to California to teach and married Emily Toste, an art teacher, in 1954.
He attended Stanford University where he received an advanced degree in education.
With his wife Emily, he moved to the Los Angeles area and he attended UCLA where he graduated with a Ph.D. in education. He was employed by the State of California as a school planning adviser, a position he held for many years.
After he retired from the State he was a private consultant assisting various school districts in school planning for several years. In the years following, he and his wife traveled extensively. Schwilke loved swimming, hiking, skiing and art. They were very interested in environmental causes and contributed to various organizations.
He is survived by his wife Emily and two sisters, Mary L. Fogg of Fallbrook, Calif. and Teresa R. Shaner of Lakewood, Colo. and many nieces and nephews.
There were no funeral services and the body was cremated. Interment of his ashes will be in Estes Park during a private family memorial later this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rocky Mountain National Park Associates, the UNC Foundation at Greeley, or the American Heart Association.
Florence E. Gravem
Florence E. Gravem, 95, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002.
Gravem was born in Denver, Colo. on June 21, 1906 to Pearl Kipfer and James Banta.
She graduated from high school in 1924 and was a member of the Honorary Society. She attended Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley for two years and received her Teacher’s Certificate. She taught school in Rouse, Lester County for two years, Golden, Colo. for five years, Oklahoma City for six years and Jefferson County Schools for 17 years. She retired in 1965.
She continued her education while working and received her bachelor’s degree in 1952 from University of Northern Colorado.
On Feb. 14, 1932, she married Alvin C. Gravem, who passed away on July 19, 1952.
Gravem moved to Estes Park in August of 1984.
She loved to travel, read, play bridge and tell stories. She was a member of the Eastern Star, NEA and CEA.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and John Marks; grandson, John Marks Jr.; granddaughter Julie Soricelli; and three other grandchildren, Chris and Bonnie Soricelli and Aubrie Marks.
A memorial service will be held Monday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at the Allenspark Community Church.
She will be buried in the Golden Cemetery, in Golden, Colo.

Thomas C. "Tom" Bein
Thomas C. "Tom" Bein, 77, and his wife Phyllis Davis Bein, 76, who lived in the Big Thompson Canyon near Drake, were killed Friday, April 12, 2002 in Amarillo, Texas when their single-engine plane crashed into a power plant in fog.
Tom was born on Oct. 31, 1924 in Berthoud, Colo. to Louis F. and Ellen Bunyan Bein. He graduated from Berthoud High School and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and Barnes Business College in Denver. He served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate.
Following service, he returned to Berthoud. He had been associated with the family-owned bank, Bethoud National Bank, established in 1892; administered several farms; sold insurance and farm equipment and was superintendent of the Longmont Turkey Processors.
He served as Mayor of Berthoud from 1958 to 1964 and from 1970 to 1972. He was also bank president, secretary of the Loveland Lake and Ditch company and had been a member of the Berthoud Town Board. He served as a Berthoud volunteer fireman for more than 30 years.
Tom married Louise Ismay in Mancos, Colo. on Sept. 6, 1948 and she predceased him on April 18. 1986. He married Phyllis Rice Davis, a former high school sweetheart on Oct. 25, 2001.
The couple had a passion for flying and were active members of International and Colorado Flying Farmers, Colorado Pilots’ Association, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. They participated in many fly-ins and traveled on their own to such diverse places as the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico and Canada.
On April 6, 2002, they were named the Colorado Flying Farmer’s Man and Woman of the Year.
Phyllis is survived by her three children Ed, Kathy, and Rick; five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Her former husband, Paul, preceded her in death in 1995.
Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, his brother Louis Bein, and two sisters Eleanor Bein and Elizabeth "Betty" Keto.
Survivors include two daughters Laura Jane Emerson and her husband Gary S. of Littleton, Colo. and Margaret Irene Prochaska and her husband William of Evanston, Wyo.; and sister Jane Hendon and her husband Rufus of Hamden, Ct.
Cremation has been conducted and a memorial service will be held Friday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Berthoud First United Methodist Church.

Brian Joseph "B.J." Pankau
Brian Joseph "B.J." Pankau, 18, died Friday, May 24 at the Granby Medical Center in Granby, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Pankau was born April 14, 1984 in Denver, Colo. to Tod and Marsha "Dandy" (Gilliland) Pankau.
Pankau was living in Fraser, Colo. at the time of his death and had previously lived in Estes Park. Pankau was a senior at Middle Park High School in Granby and his death came one day before he was to graduate.
Pankau worked for Amaze’n Maze at the Winter Park Resort and was going to manage the maze this summer. He also had previously worked for KRKY Radio. He was a volunteer announcer for the rodeo in Fraser as well as the announcer for Middle Park High School sporting events for radio broadcasts.
When Pankau was only three years old, his family noticed his caring personality developing. He was not afraid to tell you he loved you and to give you a hug. Pankau was honest and open, and when he was caught doing wrong, he took his punishment and refused to be caught in pity or anger.
Pankau loved sports, participating in may different school activities. He and his dad were Fantasy Football partners, with Dad paying the entry fee and Brian setting up the team. He knew sports well and could quote many statistics about his favorite teams and players.
He loved communication of any kind, especially when he was the star of the show. He loved theater and participated since he was three years old in Estes Park.
He was the unofficial school cheerleader, and ballgames most certainly had more spirit when he was there.
He brought people together in many ways as a community and also individually as he sought to understand what each person was saying to him.
Pankau was preceded in death by his grandfather James Gilliland.
Survivors include his father Tod Pankau of Fraser, Colo.; mother Marsha Dianne "Dandy" Pankau of Santa Fe, Texas; brother Jes Pankau of Fraser, Colo.; grandparents Leo and Bobbie Pankau of Estes Park, Patty and Jack Guedin of Santa Fe, Texas, Dorothy Streeter of Alvin, Texas; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Services were held Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at 5 p.m. at the Silver Creek Convention Center with Pastor Steve Unruh of Hot Sulphur Springs Community Church officiating.
Alexa Boeck and Chelsey Byrd sang a duet, the Middle Park High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Nini Watson performed and Kris Boy was the accompanist.
A memorial celebration followed at the Pole Creek Clubhouse.

Yoshiro Budo
Arrangements are pending for Yoshiro Budo, 79, of Estes Park, who died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 in his home.
He is survived by his wife Ann of Estes Park and his children.

Ralph Steinhebel
Ralph Steinhebel, 88, formerly of Estes Park, died Sept. 15, 2002, in Bartlett, Ill., after being in the hospital for seven weeks.
Steinhebel was born on Dec. 23, 1913, in Melrose Park, Ill. He and his wife retired to Estes Park in 1977.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Milda Steinhebel, two daughters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Bob Calbow
Bob Calbow, 80, died in his Estes Park home on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002.
Calbow was born on Dec. 9, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., to George W. Calbow and Elizabeth (Letsche) Calbow.
He graduated from high school in Park Ridge, Ill.
On Nov. 8, 1947, he married Imogene "Gene" Conley in Park Ridge, Ill.
He worked for the Park Ridge Fire Department for 26 years, retiring as a captain.
Upon retiring in 1972, he moved to Estes Park.
He was a seasonal ranger with Rocky Mountain National Park in Fire Control and Law Enforcement for four years.
Calbow was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, American Legion Post #119, a former member of H.O.G., the Harley Owner’s Group, and the Illinois Professional Firefighters Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gene Calbow, his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel Calbow and his wife Barbara of Cedarburg, Wis., Donald Calbow of Loveland, Colo., and George Calbow of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandson Michael Calbow of Cedarburg, Wis.; and two granddaughters, Melissa Calbow of Estes Park and Missy Mathias of New York, N.Y.
A memorial mass will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church with Rev. Grzegorz J. Cioch officiating. Cremation will take place, and he will be buried at the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.
Viola Ogren
A memorial service has been scheduled for Viola Ogren of Estes Park, who died Nov. 12, 2002, at Prospect Park Living Center.
The service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Community Church of the Rockies.
