Cherrie Lloyd

Cherrie Lloyd, 77, died at Longmont United Hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, at the Community Church of the Rockies. Rev. Peter Vanderveen will officiate. After the service, a reception will follow at the Wheel Bar.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1923, in Whitesboro, Texas, to Eddie Bryan and Ollie Mae (Worley) Brooks. She graduated from Whitesboro High School and later married Joseph E. Lloyd on Dec. 24, 1953, in Fursten Feldbuck, West Germany.

In her youth, she worked as a model for Montgomery Ward, but was a homemaker and military wife, traveling with her husband to Germany, Colorado and Michigan.

A former resident of Littleton, Mrs. Lloyd moved to Estes Park in 1976.

Mrs. Lloyd was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in March of 1998; and by some of her brothers and sisters.

Survivors include: her son, Jeffrey Lloyd, of Estes Park; her daughter, Sandra (Sunny) McFarren, of Silver City, N.M.; her daughter, Brooks Lloyd, of Estes Park; her sister, Elizabeth Warren, of Fort Worth, Texas; her grandson, Whitney Spurgeon, of Chicago; her grandson, Tommy Spurgeon, of Oregon; and her grandson, Dan Spurgeon, also of Silver City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lions Eye Institute, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.

Patricia (Rachel) Casillo

Patricia (Rachel) Casillo died suddenly in her home on Sunday, Feb. 18. She was 53 years old.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Allnutt Funeral Chapel.

She was born on May 4, 1947, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Joseph and Victoria (Snios) Casillo. She graduated from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, N.Y.

Ms. Casillo had previously lived in Estes Park for 10 years, and just recently moved back in 1997.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include: a sister, Carol Casillo, of Lancaster; a sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Richard Medbury, of Lancaster; and a nephew, Adam Medbury, also of Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Ministry, in care of the Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves

Mabel E. Schlatter

Mabel E. Schlatter, 98, died at the Prospect Living Center on Thursday, March 8.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., today, Friday, March 9, at Allnutt Funeral Chapel in Estes Park. Graveside services will be held at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Sterling at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10.

She was born on May 16, 1902, in Urbana, Mo., to Noah T. and Myra E. (Depew) Howard. She graduated from high school in Salina, Kan., and attended Emporia College, also in Kansas, and taught school near McPherson, Kan.

She married Homer Schlatter on June 3, 1926, in Goodland, Kan. The couple lived in Wauneta, Neb., for three years before moving to Sterling in 1929, where Mrs. Schlatter attended the Christ United Methodist Church.

She and her husband bought property in Estes Park in 1948, and then retired here permanently in 1972.

Mrs. Schlatter was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, in 1978; a brother; and a sister.

Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Mary June and Bill Myers, of Estes Park; her sister, Norine Johnson, of Topeka, Kan.; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Church of the Rockies or Christ United Methodist Church of Sterling, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.

Ida Mae Stevens

Ida Mae Stevens, 71, of Fort Collins, died on Monday, March 5, at Columbine Care East.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, at Bohlender Chapel.

She was born on Mary 18, 1929, in Oakland, Calif., to Bessie and Jean Bistline. She grew up in California and New York, graduating from Knox School for Girls in 1947. She then attended Bucknell University, the University of Utah and Denver University.

She married Richard M. Nichols in 1949, and later divorced.

In 1956, she married Richard Stevens. The couple moved to Fort Collins in 1963 and divorced in 1970.

She then married Robert B. Polzin in 1975 in Estes Park, where she worked for the Trail-Gazette. She also worked for the Larimer County Treasurer’s Office and the Mental Health Office. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the United Way and Hahn Plumbing.

She enjoyed bridge, crafts and dancing, as well as being active in AA and Al-Anon for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death by all three of her husbands; her son, Ralph P. Stevens; and her brothers, Roy and Merrill Bistline.

Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Donn Hopkins; her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Rick Rougé, of Fort Collins; her daughter-in-law, Margie Stevens; a friend, Joe Kisner, of Wellington; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harmony Foundation in Estes Park of the Fort Collins Area United Way.

Jean M. Witherell

Jean M. Witherell, 88, died on Wednesday, April 4, at North Shore Manor.

A private family memorial service was conducted.

She was born on July 23, 1912, in Galva, Ill., to George and Blanche (Houghton) McClintock.

She married Robert Stowell Witherell on March 15, 1935, in Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Witherell worked as a homemaker most of her life, living in Denver before the couple moved to Estes Park in 1976.

She enjoyed painting, needlepoint, sewing, weaving, cooking and antiquing. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, as well as a member of PEO.

Mrs. Witherell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on May 24, 1999, and also by a sister.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Judy Witherell, and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern Colorado, in care of the Allnutt Hunter Chapel, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80538.

Lois Ellen Plaut

Lois Ellen Plaut, a longtime summer resident of Estes Park, died on Thursday, June 21, at her home in La Jolla, Calif.

Born in Rome, N.Y., in 1912, she graduated from Syracuse University and later from Yale with a degree in nursing.

In 1938, she married Dr. Jules Plaut. After World War II, the couple moved to Claremont, Calif., where they lived until 1970. Mrs. Plaut spent her summers in Estes Park for the past 40 years and loved to entertain. She was also a member of the Summer Resident’s Association.

Survivors include: her son, Peter, from Dallas; her daughter, Alison, from Sacramento, Calif.; her daughter, Margaret, of Encinitas, Calif.; along with five grandchildren and her cat.

Memorial contributions may be made to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.

John "Jack" R. Nilsen

John "Jack" R. Nilsen, 47, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in his Estes Park home.

Born Aug. 25 1954, in Teaneck, New Jersey to John and Alice (Sorensen) Nilsen, he was a self-employed cabinet maker in Estes Park.

Nilsen moved from Teaneck at the age of three to Old Tappan, N.J. He attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in communications. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

He lived for many years in Toms River, N.J. where he met and married Laura Christenson in 1986 on a boat in Barnegat Bay, N.J. on May 17, 1986.

The couple moved to Estes Park in 1995.

Nilsen was an avid skier, hiker and woodworker. He was also an avid sailor and had studied sailing on Long Island and built his own boat.

Nilsen found great joy in pursuing his interests and livelihood in the Estes Park area.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Nilsen of Estes Park; daughter Jennifer Nilsen of Estes Park; father John Nilsen of St. Cloud, Fla.; mother-in-law Bobbie Christenson of Estes Park; brother Richard Nilsen and his wife Carol of Phoenix, Ariz.; and brother Craig Nilsen and his wife Terry of Virginia Beach, Va.

He is also survived by his canine companions, Maggie and Bailey and a loving extended family of in-laws, cousins, nephews and nieces.

A casual celebration of his life will be held at the Allnut Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jess L. Mahon officiating.

A reception will follow at Creekside Suites (turn left on David Drive off Fall River Road).

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Allnut Funeral Chapel.

Contributions may be made to the John Nilsen Scholarship to benefit an Estes Park High School student with a learning difference, in care of Allnut Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, Co. 80517.

Elbert "Bert" A. McLaren

Elbert "Bert" A. McLaren died, Nov. 2, 2001 in his daughter’s home in Grand Junction.

He was 71 years old.

McLaren was born in Longmont, Co. on Nov. 29, 1929 to Fred and Iva McLaren. He spent the majority of his life in Grand Lake, Co.

He graduated from Hot Sulphur Springs High School and served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict. He was a National Park Ranger for 35 years, working in Yellowstone, Teton and Rocky Mountain National Park.

In later years, he was a volunteer at the Kauffman House in Grand Lake. He enjoyed skiing, horses, backcountry and music.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of Estes Park; brother Doug McLaren of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; sons Charles McLaren of West Grove, Pa. and Rusty McLaren of San Diego, Calif.; daughter Cyndy McLaren of Grand Junction, Co.; six grandchildren, one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will held at a later date in Grand Lake.

Virginia Owen

Virginia Owen, 87, died in her Allenspark home on Dec. 8, 2001.

Born in Topeka, Kan. Oct. 23, 1914 to August Wahl and Josephine (Clarke) Wahl, Owen worked at Southwestern Bell in Topeka for over 34 years as a secretary to the vice president and general manager.

After she moved to Allenspark in 1974, she worked at the Wild Basin Lodge and Roth’s Family Restaurant gift shop. She also volunteered at Prospect Park Living Center.

Owen graduated from Topeka High School and went on to marry Bernard Lee Owen on Nov. 25, 1937 in Ottawa, Kan. He died Sept. 11, 1944.

She was a member of St. James on the Mount Episcopal Church and the Hilltop Guild where she served several years as president. She was also a member of the Allenspark Community Church where she had served on the church board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one sister.

Survivors include her daughter Carol Ann Willis and her husband Warren of Lynchburg, Va.; daughter Kathy Smerchek and her husband Gene of Allenspark; sister Betty Nixon and her husband Nick of Monument, Colo.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A service will be held Monday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Allenspark Community Church. Rev. Rex Roth will officiate.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Estes Valley in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, Co. 80517.

Cornelia Stanford

Cornelia Edwards Stanford of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Estes Park, Colo. passed away Dec. 6, 2001 in Scottsdale.

Stanford was born on January 11, 1902 to A.D. and Mary Washburn in Topeka, Kan. She moved to Kansas City, Kan. where she married J. Renz Edwards in 1921. They owned the F. S. Edwards Tobacco Co.

She was the founder and first president of the Service League which became the Junior League of Kansas City, Kan. During World War II she was Captain of the Red Cross Motor Corps and was active in many charitable activities. She began spending the summers in Estes Park in the 1930s, staying at the Elkhorn Lodge. She was a member of the Summer Resident’s Association in the 1950s.

She spent the winters in Arizona for the past 20 years and eventually made that her permanent home.

J. Renz Edwards preceded her in death in 1949. She married Vernon "Bing" Smith, who also preceded her in death. And, she married Dave Stanford who also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son Renz Edwards and daughter-in-law Mary Edwards, both of Estes Park and Scottsdale; her daughter, Phyllis Edwards of Scottsdale; son, Frank Edwards, and daughter-in-law, Mary, of Scottsdale; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including locally: granddaughter, Shauna Duell and her husband Craig and their children Taylor and Jordan; her step-son Gad Smith his wife Jean, and their daughter Katherine Kross and husband Kevin; and step-daughter-in-law Beverly Stanford.

A service will be held Jan.12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church in Scottsdale. She will be interred in Kansas City, Kan. at a later date.

Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
