Jack Brown
1925 - 2008
Navy vet a native of Fort Morgan
Jack Brown, 83, native of Fort Morgan, died July 13 in Springfield, Va., after a long illness.
Brown was born June 29, 1925. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School with the Class of 1943. After high school, he attended Doane College in Crete, Neb., and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. LCDR Brown retired from the U.S. Navy in 1965 after service aboard the USS Sea Cat, USS Sea Leopard and the USS Diodon.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla; three children, Donna Coe, Donald Brown and Peggy Abel; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen McRary.
A memorial service and reception were held Aug. 27 at St. Stevens United Methodist Church in Burke, Va. Following the memorial service, a private burial ceremony was held at Arlington Cemetery.
Glenn Albert Hendrickson
1912 - 2008
Lifelong Morgan resident was Mason, NRA member
Glenn Albert Hendrickson, 96, lifelong resident of Fort Morgan, died Friday at the Valley View Villa Care Center in Fort Morgan.
Hendrickson was born Aug. 17, 1912 in Dubois, Neb., to Ira and Amanda (Grossenbacher) Hendrickson. He moved to Fort Morgan from Humbold, Neb., in 1921.
He married Silvie Mae Alyea July 18, 1935 in Brighton.
Hendrickson was a member of Morgan Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Oasis Lodge #67 AF & AM. He received a plaque for being a Mason for more than 50 years. He enjoyed boating, shooting and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He also liked to travel, but did not like to fly so he drove wherever he went.
Survivors include one son, Donald Hendrickson of Fort Morgan; one daughter, Dixie Brawley of Leola, Ark.; one brother, Lynn Hendrickson of Wiggins; two sisters, Iola Moeller and Ruth Merklin, both of Fort Morgan; 14 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Silvie; two daughters, Amanda Lamar and Dorothy Hendrickson; five sisters, Doris, Carman, Alta Rigli, Blanche Patten, Esther Clemons and an infant sister, Dorothy Hendrickson.
Visitation will be held today, Sept. 15, from noon until 5 p.m. at the Heer Mortuary in Fort Morgan.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Galynn R. Wendling
1938 - 2008
Haxtun man worked at Morgan golf course 9 years
Galynn R. Wendling, 70, died Monday, Sept. 8, at his home in Haxtun.
Wendling was born July 15, 1938, in Fort Morgan. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1956. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy.
After his discharge, he attended Colorado State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s degree. He taught school at Wiggins, Byers and Morgan Community College. Wendling taught biology, served as guidance counselor, and was a recruiter at Morgan Community College. He retired from teaching in 1985.
Wendling later worked at the Fort Morgan Golf Course as assistant golf pro, a position he held for nine years.
He married Linda Roland Dec. 22, 1971, in Fort Morgan. In 1998, the Wendlings moved to Haxtun.
Wendling was a life member of BPOE (Elks) Lodge No. 743 and was the first president of Fort Morgan Men’s Golf Association. He was passionate about golf, enjoyed music (writing, singing, playing a guitar and keyboard), and enjoyed sports including local high school, college and professional.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Haxtun; one son, Jason of Haxtun; two daughters from a previous marriage; one sister, Garnette Stiles and her husband Bud of Fort Collins.
A celebration service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the United Presbyterian Church, 1300 E. Riverview in Fort Morgan. Inurnment followed in the United Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

Dale F. Rathbun
1930 - 2008
New Raymer resident was master welder, millwright
Dale F. Rathbun, 78, of New Raymer, passed quietly at his home with family present on Sunday, September 14, 2008.
Dale was born July 22, 1930 in Chappell, Neb., to Thomas Fred and Nina Fern Rathbun. He attended Goshen County Wyoming schools and graduated from Huntley High in 1948. He farmed with his father until we was inducted into the Army on May 28, 1951. He was posted in Texas during the Korean War and honorably discharged on April 4, 1953.
He married Norma Carolyn Copple on September 15, 1954 in Gering, Neb. Their children are Gayle Krager, David Rathbun, Thomas Rathbun, James Rathbun, Sue Wilson, Patricia Rathbun, Sara Meriwether, and Carol Rathbun. There are 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma; his son, Tom; and 2 brothers.
Dale was a master welder and millwright. He worked throughout the tri-state area, and locally for Wilhelm Feeds and Box Grain until his retirement when he moved to New Raymer in 1992. Dale was a self-proclaimed tinker until his death.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, September 20th at 11 a.m. at Chapel of The Plains in Stoneham, CO. Services will conclude at the church. A reception will follow the services at the Stoneham Community Center.

Lila Mae Justice
1934 - 2008
Had career in nursing, ran family store
Lila Mae Hober Justice, 74, of Akron died Sept. 11 in her home.
Mrs. Justice was born Nov. 19, 1934, to Newell and Geneva Babbitt Hober on a farm northwest of Akron. She attended the Butte School through eighth grade. She boarded in Akron and attended Akron High School. In August of 1952, she married Clarence VanMater. Early in their marriage, the couple moved around with an oil rig company. They moved back to Washington County in 1958. In 1965, they bought a small farm and moved to Yuma, where they started a dairy.
After their divorce, she began her career in nursing. She married Bill Justice on Jan. 4, 1973, and moved to Akron. Mrs. Justice continued to work at the Yuma District Hospital until her obligation for school was complete. She then started working for the Washington County Hospital & Nursing Home. Most of the time she worked in the nursing home wing. In 1986, Mrs. Justice, along with her husband, Bill and daughter, Patty, purchased and ran the Akron Variety store. She left nursing in 1989 and only worked at their store. She greatly enjoyed working with the public. After closing the store down in 1996, she took a New England fall trip with Ruth Pieper.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, grand-daughter, K’Dee Keim and sister, Patty Sikes.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Donna Leach of Livonia, Mo., Lois Conner of Ogallala, Neb., and Patty Baker of Akron; a brother, Bill Hober of Denver; a sister, Mary Hackleman of BellaVista, Ark.; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Akron. Interment followed at Akron Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made the First Presbyterian Church of Akron or the Children’s Hospital.

Mildred Starlin
1941 - 2008
Devoted many hours to religious, civic activities
Mildred Starlin, 85, a native of Washington County, died Saturday at the Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan.
Mrs. Starlin grew up on the farm of her parents, Earl and Ila Hannah, near the community of Elba. She graduated from Akron High School in 1941.
She married Floyd Starlin in Sterling on June 1, 1941 and the couple settled on the original Starlin homestead 6-1/2 miles south of Akron. Through their combined efforts and hard work, they were able to establish and maintain a sizeable wheat farm and cattle ranching operation.
In addition to her busy life on the farm she devoted many hours to various religious and civic activities. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Akron. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years as well as actively participated in the women’s group, UPW. A tireless member of the Home Demonstration Clubs, later known as the Colorado Extension Homemakers, she was honored as Homemaker of the Year in1992. She enjoyed traveling to several of the international conferences held at such destinations as Europe, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. Mrs. Starlin was a charter member of the Antelope Springs Home Demonstration Club.
Always interested in history, she helped create the Washington County, Colorado Museum Complex and was instrumental in the addition of several additional buildings including moving a one-room schoolhouse into Akron from the country as well as the acquisition of the Akron Train Depot and Burlington Northern Crew Dormitory.
She loved gardening and spent countless hours in her large garden and yard.
Mrs. Starlin is survived by her two children, Dwane Starlin of Washington, D.C., and Lucinda Starlin of Akron; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyeterian Church of Akron. Interment will follow at Akron Cemetery.
Contributions on her behalf may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Akron or the Washington County, Colorado Museum located in Akron.

Emilio Isaiah Calderon
2008 - 2008
Emilio Isaiah Calderon, 28 days old, died Saturday in Denver.
The infant was born Aug. 16, 2008 in Sterling to Pedro Calderon Jr. and Jamie L. Roth.
He is survived by his parents of Sterling; grandparents, Rosenda Rosas and step-grandfather, Luis Rosas, Thomas Roth and Rhonda Roth, all of Sterling, and Pedro Calderon of Dallas, Texas; great-grandparents, Manuela Sandoval of Sterling, Pedro and Soccoro Calderon of Durango, Mexico, and Marilyn Baayen of Arvada.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. David Baines officiating. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Emilio Isaiah Calderon Memorial Fund.

Ida Hood
1938 - 2008
Lifelong resident of Woodrow, Brush areas
Ida Hood, 70, life resident of the Woodrow and Brush communities, died Tuesday night at Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Hood was born June 5, 1938, in Brush to Andrew and Lula Blake. Her family farmed and ranched in the Woodrow area for many years.
She enjoyed working in her flower garden, growing beautiful flowers, playing bingo and doing crafts. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Hood was a member of the Moose Lodge of Morgan County.
Survivors include her two children, Cindy Strauch and Bobby Hood, both of Brush; one sister, Fern Hall of Brush; a half-sister, Betty Ivey of West Virginia; and two granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Daisy Rosenfield; four brothers, Raymond Blake, Kenneth Blake, Henry Blake and Robert Blake; and her parents.
A graveside service and interment will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Brush Memorial Cemetery

Larry E. Vondy
Grew up in Brush area, worked as plane mechanic
Larry E. Vondy, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Feb. 3 in Phoenix.
Vondy was born to Art and Flossie Vondy and attended school in Brush and Snyder. He joined the Air Force in 1950 for four years.
He worked as a mechanic in an airplane factory in Phoenix, where he and his wife, Eda, retired.
Vondy is survived by his son, Eric, and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eda, parents and a brother, Kenneth.
Raymond Charles Smith
1916 - 2008
Ran refrigeration business after retirement
Raymond Charles Smith, 91, longtime Fort Morgan resident, died late Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at the Life Care Center in Greeley.
He was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Kirwin, Kan., to Charles Raymond and Nettie Mae (Camp) Smith. He married Lucille Isaac in Kimball, Neb., on May 26, 1941.
Ray farmed, worked at Neil’s Service Station in Fort Morgan and later worked for Morgan County REA as an appliance repairman for 16 years before his retirement in 1980. After retiring he continued his own business, Ray’s Refrigeration.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Fort Morgan. He enjoyed bowling, doing crossword puzzles, going to Meet & Eat and going to coffee with his friends.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Charlene Wells and her husband Dave of Greeley; his grandchildren, Jennifer Sullivan and her husband Jeremy of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Nichole Green and her husband Tyler of Evans, and Justin Wells and Amanda Pollock of Greeley. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Morgan Green, Hailey Green, Addison Sullivan and Allyson Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, who passed away on Oct. 28, 1960; his three sisters, Hazel Lemon, Fleta Ellis and Wilda Sparks; and his parents.
Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 1100 W. Platte Ave. in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery
in Fort Morgan.
Memorial donations may be made in Ray’s memory at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer for Abbey Vannoy’s “Peace Corps Partnership Project.” Funds received will be used to purchase materials for construction of a kitchen for the Mtimane Primary School located in Swaziland.
