Linda Jean Iungerich

Active in church, political arenas
Linda Jean Iungerich, 71, passed away Monday at her home in Fort Morgan after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Linda was born Nov. 11, 1936, in Fort Morgan to C. D. “Curly” and Ruth (Gordon) Garver.
She graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1955. Following graduation, she worked for The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company during the dial conversion.
Linda married Carl D. Iungerich on Nov. 11, 1955, in Raton, N.M., and they made their home in Fort Morgan. Following the birth of their children she was a domestic engineer.
Linda was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and elder. She volunteered many hours of her time for her children’s schools, the United Way, 27 years on the Board of the Morgan County Cancer Society, Morgan County RE-3 Accountability Committee, two terms as president of the Morgan County Farmers Union, and two social ladies clubs — the Kensington Klatter Klub and Riverside Club.
Linda was also a board member of the Fort Morgan Heritage Foundation, serving as secretary and vice president and on the endowment committee.
Next to her family, Linda loved gardening, reading and the holidays. She was a devoted and proud Democrat. Linda was a longtime chair of the Morgan County Democrats and throughout the years served in all the officer positions, taking on the treasurer position even as her health was failing. She had also been a candidate for Morgan County Commissioner District Two.
During her political life, Linda was a charter member of the Morgan County Big Ten Democratic Organization, a member of the Century Club, the Democratic National Committee, Democrats for America’s Future, and a member of the Morgan County Jane Jeffersons, serving as president numerous times. She was also past president of the State Federation of Democratic Women and National League of Women Voters among various other historical foundations. She strongly supported the County Sheriffs of Colorado, Fort Morgan Museum, Progressive 15, MADD, and local 4-H and FFA organizations.
Linda was a member of the Morgan County Bowling Association for 44 years until ill health forced her retirement from the sport she truly enjoyed. She served as president of the Woodpecker Bowling League in 2005-06, where she had many friends.
She is survived by one son, Tyler Iungerich and his wife Suzi of Loveland; a daughter, Lynda K. Crone and her husband Jim of Fort Morgan; seven grandchildren, Jay (and Meghan) Iungerich, Chantil (and Geoff) Taylor, Cristen Iungerich, Jared Iungerich, Kirk, Kaylyn and Ryan Crone; one great-grandson, Garvin Taylor; one brother, Clifford D. Garver Jr. and his wife Pat; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Garver Smart of Fort Morgan and Thelma (Barthlama) Riggs of Billings, Mont.; and brother-in-law Bill Johnson of Darrouzett, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl D. Iungerich; first-born son, Carl Jr.; her parents; brother, Gordon Garver; and sister, Lou Anne Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens.
Linda asked for memorials to be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado or the United Presbyterian Church.

John R. Brown Jr.
1926 - 2008
Service to be in Fort Morgan at later date
John R. Brown Jr., 82, of Kingman, Ariz., died Tuesday, July 8.
Brown was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Kirtland, Ohio, to John and Melva (Annis) Brown. He married Dorothy Johansen (Knaub) on June 29, 1962. He and his wife moved to Kingman in 1986 to retire.
He is survived by his sons, Mark Brown of St. Marys, Idaho, Paul Brown of Springfield, Mo., and Chris Brown of Greeley; a daughter, Anitra Lewis of Kingman; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Brown was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Cremation will take place with interment and service to be in Fort Morgan at a later date for Mr. and Mrs. Brown.

Jose P. Hernandez

Former local was in Navy Undersea Med. Institute
Jose P. Hernandez, 30, former Fort Morgan area resident, died Saturday, Aug. 9, of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident in Groton, Conn.
He was born March 8, 1978, in New Britain, Conn., to David F. and Patricia H. Hernandez.
Hernandez graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1997. He joined the U.S. Navy Feb. 4, 1998.
At the time of his death, Hernandez was stationed at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn. He loved his military career. He was a member of St. Helena Catholic Church.
Survivors include his mother, Patricia H. Romero of Sterling; one sister, Aurora A. Hernandez of Pueblo; two brothers, Roberto C. Hernandez of Fort Morgan and Mario D. Hernandez of Sterling; his paternal grandparents, Joe F. and Virginia Hernandez of Fort Morgan; his maternal grandfather, Ernesto E. Romero of Palm Beach, Fla.; a special nephew, Adrian Alexander Salazar of Greeley; former wife Andrea Robinson-Hernandez, and he was the nephew of Emily Avalos, Hope Rodarte, Eddie and Rosina Hernandez, Stella and Gilbert Lujan, Gloria and Clayton Eastman, Tommy and Isabelle Romero, and Ernest Romero Jr.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Hernandez, and his maternal grandmother, Juana Romero.
Rosary and vigil services will be Friday at 5 p.m. at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Helena Catholic Church in Fort Morgan. Military graveside services by the U.S. Navy will follow at Memory Gardens.
Ysmael "Mike" Hernandez
1915 - 2008
Lifelong area resident enjoyed fishing, music
Ysmael “Mike” Hernandez, 93, lifelong area resident, died Wednesday at his home in Fort Morgan.
Hernandez was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Baton Rouge, La. He married Josephine Zapata on Jan. 29, 1936, in Snyder.
He attended the United Methodist Church in Brush.
Hernandez enjoyed fishing, listening to music, gardening, reading, woodworking and doing the mechanical work on his cars.
Survivors include his four sons, Ricardo Hernandez of Anchorage, Alaska, David Hernandez of Fort Morgan, Manuel Hernandez of Casper, Wyo., and Charles Hernandez of Denver; one daughter, Mini Amador of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mary Jimenez of Brush; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Josephine; two daughters, Helen Murillo and Beatrice Hernandez; and two sons, Stephen and David Hernandez.
Visitation will be today, Aug. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Heer Mortuary in Brush.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush. Interment will follow in Brush Memorial Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made in Hernandez’ name in care of the Heer Mortuary and Crematory.

John Edward Mahaffey

Local man played steel guitar, traveled U.S.
John Edward Mahaffey, 68, of Fort Morgan, died Friday, Aug. 1, in Las Vegas, Nev., at Valley Hospital.
Mahaffey was born Feb. 5, 1940 in Phoenix, Ariz., to Earl and Ester Mahaffey. He was raised and lived in Santa Monica, Calif. Mahaffey graduated from Santa Monica High School. He married Sharon Walter Aug. 14, 1982. Mahaffey was a pipefitter and a professional steel guitar player.
His hobbies were playing the steel guitar, traveling the U.S. with his wife and boating and fishing. He loved spending time with his family.
He was a member of Campers for Christ and Local Pipefitters #208.
Mahaffey is survived by his wife, Sharon of Fort Morgan; three sons, James Mahaffey of Winnemucka, Nev., David Mahaffey of Denver, and Robert Walter of Fort Morgan; three daughters, Ramona McIntire of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Cheryl “Missie” Gant of Jacksonville, N.C., and Julie Benton Scheneman of Fort Morgan; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date.
Irene Hoffner
1922 - 2008
Lived on Wiggins farm since 1958
Irene Virginia Hoffner, 85, of Wiggins died Saturday at her home in Wiggins.
She was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Gill, Colo., to Carl and Lena (Foos) Brug.
She attended Gill Schools all 12 years, graduating in 1940. She married Jacob Hoffner on April 23, 1944.
She worked at the Safeway store in Greeley while her husband served in the armed forces during World War II. After Jake returned, they farmed at Gill for 11 years. They bought a farm at Wiggins and lived there since 1958.
She was a member of the Wiggins Community Church and belonged to the Women’s Fellowship. She was a homemaker and loved working with animals and always had a beautiful flower garden. She loved listening to polka music and liked to dance the polka. She also loved bowling.
Irene is survived by her husband, Jacob of Wiggins; daughter Jane and Michael Levy, Hannah and Sam of Alexandria, Va.; and daughter-in-law Betty Hoffner of Oakland, Neb.
She was preceded in death by son Timothy, her parents and brothers Victor and Edward.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wiggins Community Church. The service will conclude at the church.

Harry Becker
1919 - 2008
WWII vet was farmer near Brush for 30 years
Harry Becker, 89, of Amarillo, Texas, former resident of Brush, died Thursday.
Becker was born April 8, 1919, in Brush to Henry and Catherine Becker. He was raised in Snyder and graduated from Snyder High School. He attended Aims Business School in Denver.
Following Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1941. He served as a motor machinist mate aboard the U.S.S. Chinquapin, a net tender, and then at Midway and the Hawaiian Islands through the duration of the war. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Brush where he farmed with his parents and attended trade school. He married Loma Faye Hearn on Sept. 29, 1946, in Brush. He was a successful farmer near Brush and Hoyt for over 30 years.
Following his retirement in 1980, they moved to Amarillo where they resided until his death.
He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church and participated in various activities. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, trout fishing and spending time with his family.
Becker is survived by his wife, Loma Faye Becker; a son, Steven Becker; and a sister, Helen Marotte, all of Amarillo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; older brothers Jacob Becker and Henry Becker Jr.; and older sister Alvina Mayes.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, Aug. 11, at Schooler Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Paramount Baptist Church with Rev. Lance Harrington officiating. Burial will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia St., in Amarillo.

Sylvia M. Walkup
1934 - 2008
Lived in Brush since 1979
Sylvia M. Walkup, 73, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush.
She was born Nov. 21, 1934, in Berlin, N.H., to Charles and Mildred Meehan. Along with her parents, Sylvia was welcomed to the family by an older brother, Charles “Sonny” Meehan.
The Meehan family relocated to Grand Prairie, Texas, in 1947. After graduating from Grand Prairie High School in 1953, Sylvia married William L. Walkup, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. The family lived in Texas for a period of time where son Timothy was born. After relocating to Colorado the Walkups welcomed two additional children to their family, Sheila and David.
While raising her family, Sylvia worked for many years for the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. Much of her time was spent watching her children in sports and other school activities. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching Tim and David play baseball. The Walkup family moved to Brush in 1979.
Regardless of where she lived, Sylvia enjoyed meeting people and was blessed with many close friends. Her circle of friends included neighbors, extended family members, and her friends from the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, of which Sylvia was an active member for many years.
In her later years, Sylvia most enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Sports, music concerts and just simple times together were very important to her.
Survivors include her husband, Bill of Brush; sons, Tim of Denver, and David, his wife, Liz, and their children, Easten, Jordan and Kaiya, all of Greeley; and her daughter, Sheila Bostrom, her husband, Mitch, and their children, Cole, Brett and Hunter, all of Brush.
She was preceded in death by her brother and her parents.
A rosary will be said at 10 a.m. Monday followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 340 Stanford St. in Brush. Interment will follow in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.

Virgil A. Segelke
1923 - 2008
World War II vet owned local businesses
Virgil A. Segelke, 85, life resident of Morgan County, died Tuesday at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush.
Segelke was born May 19, 1923, in Hillrose to Clarence and Luena Segelke. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He owned and operated the Segelke Well Service in Wiggins from 1950 until 1973. From 1974 to 1984, he owned Cattleman’s Inn in Brush. He married Linda Witt Pickett in Las Vegas, Nev., on June 20, 1986.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Morgan County and the American Legion Sagebrush Post.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Brush; two sons, Gary of Fort Morgan and Brian of Denver; his daughter, Cherryl Warner of Anderson, S.C.; a step-daughter, Misty Genho of Brush; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd Segelke, two sisters, four brothers and his parents.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush. The service will conclude at the mortuary.
