Verle R. Atkinson, Fort Morgan
1926 - 2008
Verle R. Atkinson, 82, better known as Sy, died Tuesday April 29, 2008, at Valley View Villa Nursing Home in Fort Morgan.
He was born February 2, 1926, in Brush, to Carey and Irene Atkinson. He was born & raised on the Break O Day Ranch south of Brush.
Sy spent many productive years farming, growing prized alfalfa seed, and seed corn. He was very well known in his younger years for his handsome looks and his envied ability on the dance floor.
Survivors include his sister, Wilma Bliss of Fairbanks, AK; and two brothers, Albert Ross Atkinson of Bakersfield, CA, and Walter Atkinson of Laramie, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Grace Mindrup, Ruth Kaufman, Mildred Peterson, Verne C. Atkinson, Nola Peterson, and Velma Harmon.
A memorial service was held Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush at 11 a.m.
Inurnment was in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.
Dorothy S. Dytkiewicz, Sterling
1933 - 2008
Dorothy S. Dytkiewicz, 74, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 1, 2008, at the Sterling Regional Medical Center in Sterling, CO.
She was born June 15, 1933, in Chicago, IL to Adam and Stephanie Marezak.
On April 16, 1955, she married Al Dytkiewicz in Chicago. The Dytkiewicz family moved to Brush in 2005.
Dorothy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brush. She was a former Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed working in her garden and knitting.
Survivors include her husband, Al, of Brush; four children, George Tokas, and his wife, Judy, of Minisee Valley, CA; Don Dytkiewicz, and his wife, Sue, of Kankakee, IL; Geri, and her husband, Karl, Dahle of Snyder, CO; and Michael Dytkiewicz, and his wife, Melanie, of Tabernash, CO; four sisters, Terri Woznicki, Alice Denning, Patricia Joyce, Francine Vainauskas; and four grandchildren, Derrick, Deanne, Emily, and Adam. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter Marczak and Joe Grajek.
A mass of Christian Burial was Monday, May 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 340 Stanford Street in Brush.
The service concluded at the church.

E.E. Barney Watson, Sterling
1928 - 2008
E.E. Barney Watson, 79, of Sterling, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Sterling.
Visitation was held from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at Chaney-Reager, with the Rev. Mike Kirschbaum officiating.
Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, with military rites performed by American Legion Post No. 20.
Mr. Watson was born November 12, 1928, to John and Lydia (Pridemore) Watson in Harveyville, Kansas. He was raised and attended school in Burlinggame, Kansas.
He entered the U.S. Navy in November 1945, and was discharged in October 1947, during World War II. In January 1949, he entered the U.S. Coast Guard, being discharged March 1950.
In September 1950, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He served during the Korean War and was discharged August 1954.
On April 17, 1968, he married Helen Sharp in Rapid City, S.D.
Mr. Watson moved to Brush in the 1960s. He lived there until moving to Peetz in 1973. In 1988, he moved to Sterling, where he has resided since.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Watson of Sterling; daughters, Ramona Bethune and husband Steve of Merino and Debi Crow and friend Terry Woods of Glenville, Georgia; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; three sisters; and daughter, Twila.

Doris D. Holder, Brush
1937 - 2008
Doris D. Holder, 70, of Brush, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.
She was born August 22, 1937, to John and Florence Smith.
She grew up in Brush and graduated from Brush High School in 1955.
In 1970 Doris married Wallie Holder in Oklahoma.
Because of nature of Wallie’s job, he traveled to many different states and Doris accompanied him. She loved traveling and living in new places and did so for many years.
In 1995 the Holder’s relocated to Brush permanently.
Doris had a wonderful sense of humor and brought laughter to everyone she met. She was very creative and loved crafting and crocheting. She was a long-time member of the Royal Neighbors and was always willing to help others in need.
Survivors include her husband, Wallie, of Brush; one sister, Maryln Hanson of Brush. She is also survived by two nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Frank and Donald Smith and her parents.
A Life Celebration Service and reception was held on Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Brush Jaycee Building from 1 to 4 p.m.

David W. Russell, Greeley
1936 - 2008
David Wilson Russell, 71, longtime area resident, died, Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.
David was born June 8, 1936 in Omaha, Nebraska to William and Helen (Pope) Russell. He moved to the Brush area about 40 years ago from Nebraska
David married Bertha Polk on July 8, 1968 in Sterling, Colorado.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ft. Morgan.
David enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader and bible student.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha of Brush and children, Randy Russell of Denver, Sheila Kulhanek of York, Nebraska, Sandra Killian of Gainesville, Florida, Glenda Owens of Lakeland, Florida, Johnny Russell of Columbia, Missouri, Ricky Russell of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Danny Kersey Russell of Larimore, North Dakota, and Larry Russell of Lincoln Nebraska. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and by a step sister, Judy Bednarz of Kearney, Nebraska and two step brothers, Bill Breinig and Kenneth Breinig.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Allen Donald Russell.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fort Morgan.
The service will conclude at the church.
A private family inurnment will follow at a later date.

Charles "Chuck" Francis Custer Jr., Fort Morgan
1921 - 2008
Charles “Chuck” Francis Custer Jr., 86, of Fort Morgan, died March 27, 2008, at the Sterling Living Center in Sterling. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. A luncheon will follow the service.
Mr. Custer was born Oct. 13, 1921, to Frances (Mathis) and Charles Francis Custer Sr. in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in animal husbandry.
Custer served in the Coast Guard from 1941 to 1945. He worked as a beef sales manager for Swift & Co., Armour, Sterling Colorado Beef and Topco. Since 1983, he was a resident of Fort Morgan.
He was active in the Boy Scouts, serving at the Council, District and Troop levels for more than 25 years.
He served as a member and president of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Council in Grand Island, Neb., and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 576 in O’Fallon for 44 years and a Noble of the Tehama Shriners of Hastings, Neb. He also was a member of the U.S. Golf Association, the Fort Morgan Pitch Club and the Elks in Fort Morgan.
Mr. Custer is survived by his wife, Cleora Mae; son, Edward Allan Custer; daughter, Frances Mae Dimick; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris Jean Anderson.

Alexa Nicole Garcia, Brush
1987 - 2008
Alexa Nicole Garcia, 20, of Brush, died Thursday morning, April 10, 2008, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 76 east of Brush. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Heer Mortuary in Brush. Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 6 p.m. Sunday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Brush. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday. April 14, also at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Brush Memorial Cemetery.
Ms. Garcia was born Nov. 29, 1987, to Arnoldo and Veronica (Garcia) Maltos in Iowa City, Iowa. She attended Brush schools and graduated from Brush High School with the class of 2006. At the time of her death, she was working for Ehrlich Motors in Sterling.
She was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Brush. She enjoyed listening to music, spending time with her daughter and watching her younger brothers play baseball.
Ms. Garcia is survived by her parents; her daughter, Brisa Aguirre-Garcia; three brothers, Arturo Maltos-Garcia, Arnoldo Maltos-Garcia and Alejandro Maltos-Garcia, all of Brush; and her grandparents of Mexico.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heer Mortuary, 222 Cameron St., Brush, CO 80723. The funds will be put in savings for her daughter.

Josefina Flores, Brush, CO
1916 - 2008
She was born April 12, 1916, in Mexico to Lorenzo and Maria (Villegas) Pena.
She married Aurelio Flores on October 16, 1938.
Survivors include three sons, Adan Flores and Adolio Flores, both of Brush, and Antero Flores of Lamesa, TX; four daughters, Blanca San Miguel and Hilda Rincon, both of Brush, Anna Carrera of Greeley and Maria Hernandez of Kingsville, TX; one brother, Porfirio Pena of Brush; 32 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aurelio Flores, her parents; two sisters, Angelica Trevio and Socorro Soliz; and two grandsons, David Flores and Leroy Rincon.
Visitation was at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush on Friday, April 11, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Rosary Vigil following at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Helena Catholic Church in Fort Morgan.
Interment followed in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.

Anna Lucile Fritzler, Brush, CO
1924 - 2008
Mrs. Fritzler was born September 20, 1924, in Pratt, Kansas, to Andrew and Alice (Boynton) Nissen.
She married Paul S. Fritzler Sr. on September 2, 1943, in Pratt. They farmed at Bennett for four years and then bought a farm in Deer Trail and lived there for over 30 years. They also owned and farmed land in Byers.
After leaving Deer Trail, they lived in Byers and Hoyt before settling in Wiggins in 1988.
Anna was a member of the Pratt Methodist Church where she also taught Bible study for a number of years. She was also a member of a Home Demonstration Club in Deer Trail, and the Long Meadow Women’s Club in Hoyt.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, sewing, knitting, hunting, fishing and playing the piano.
Survivors include two sons, Paul Fritzler of Byers and Kenneth Fritzler of Bennett; two daughters, Lucile Story of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Marjorie Polanchek of Belfield, N.D.; two sisters, Karen Whinney of Kansas City, Kan., and Vera Wilcox of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; one brother, Lorenzo Nissen; one sister, Virginia Roush; and a great-granddaughter, Cera.
Memorial services were held Saturday, April 19, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Byers.

James Craig Rudolph, Springfield, MO
1923 - 2008
He was born October 16, 1923, in Brush, Colorado. His parents, James Madison and Lucy May Craig Rudolph and on brother, John M. Rudolph, preceded him in death.
Craig graduated from Brush High School. An honor student, he played basketball and was in the band, where he played the clarinet and was awarded second place in a state contest his junior year.
Craig matriculated to Northwestern University his freshman year. That year he was the head drum major of Northwestern’s marching band. He joined Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Before his sophomore year, he was inducted into the Air Corps where he served as a bombardier until the end of World War II.
He returned to Northwestern, graduating from the Kellogg School of Business with a B.A. in 1947.
While at Northwestern he was in an honorary fraternity, Purple Key, played intramural sports, and was elected “Man of the Year” which was a special honor in those days.
Also while at Northwestern, he met his future wife, June Bishop. They became engaged and were married that same year, August 23, 1947, in the Presbyterian Church in Casper, Wyoming.
Most of his business career was spent with Hallmark Cards where he started as a salesman in Denver, CO, and retired as their National Sales Manager at their headquarters in Kansas City, MO.
Upon retirement, he purchased a recruitment franchise, which brought him to Springfield, MO.
At one time he was a member of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. Under Governor Ashcroft, he was a voluntary member of the State Accounting Board. He belonged to Cooper Tennis Club, qualifying to play in the Senior Olympics in San Antonio, Texas. He was also a member of the Springfield University Club.
He thoroughly enjoyed football, especially college games, where he had a special love for the Colorado Buffaloes.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; two daughters and their husbands, Maren and Paul Kazmierczak and Arlyn and Ray Silvey; two grandsons, Anthony and Craig Kazmierczak; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Beverly Ann Johnson; and three nieces also survive him.
A celebration/memorial service was held in First And Calvary Presbyterian Church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2008, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
Visitation was Monday, January 28, 2008, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
