Arthur Lavern "Junior" Dittmar, Julesburg

1929 - 2008

Arthur Lavern “Junior” Dittmar entered into eternal rest on November 2, 2008 at age 79. Junior was born Aug 23, 1929 on a farm 16 miles south of Julesburg, the youngest child of Arthur Carl and Margaret (Aden) Dittmar. The family later moved to Julesburg, where Junior spent a happy childhood among a close-knit family and many friends. He attended the Julesburg public schools, graduating from high school in 1948.
Junior and Betty Lou Sowder began dating in 1949, and were married on October 8, 1950 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Julesburg. Junior was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 1st of that year. He attended basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and then transferred to the food service school at Camp Cooke, CA, where he became a cooking instructor. Betty joined him in March, 1951, and their first of three children, Debra Kay, was born at the base hospital on March 12, 1952. Junior and Betty lived in nearby Lompoc, CA until December, 1952, when Junior was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
Upon returning to Julesburg, Junior accepted a position at Thrasher (now Stone) Motors, where he was employed for 35 years until 1994, first as a parts manager, and then as a salesman. During his career, Junior also worked in construction for Dewey Buettenback, The Great Western Sugar Company, and Sapp Bros.
Junior’s favorite past-time was playing cards with his friends. His children fondly remember Junior organizing the weekly card game, and the sound of cards being shuffled and dealt when it was his turn to host. In his later years, Junior’s friends kindly provided transportation to the local game.
Junior is survived by his wife, Betty Lou (Sowder); three children, Debra Kay (Joe) Sena, Kim Victor (Christy) Dittmar, Tami Beth (Amy) Dittmar; four grandchildren, Amber Sena, Jaden Dittmar, Javier Dittmar, and Diego Dittmar; a brother, Victor Richard Francis (Kay) Dittmar; a brother in-law, Harl Sowder; and many family members and dear friends.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Carl and Margaret, and by seven brothers and sisters: Arnold Carl Herman, Harold Eilet Edward, Viola Hilda Louise, Theresa Augusta Ruth, Herbert Gustov Joseph, Mildred Loretta Josephine, and Norman Arthur Wilbur.
Funeral services were held November 5, 2008 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Trent Christensen officiating. Internment was at Julesburg Hillside Cemetery with military honor guard. Memorial donations may be made to the St Paul’s Lutheran Church building fund.

Everett "E.O." Richards, Chappell, Nebraska

1908 - 2008

Everett “E. O.” Richards, longtime resident of Chappell, Nebraska, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at the Sedgwick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Chappell United Methodist Church in Chappell with Pastors Jurdan Counts and Duane Dunwoody officiating. Interment was in the Chappell Cemetery with military honors.
Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of the arrangements.
E. O. was born in Long Pine, Nebraska, on November 15, 1908 to Edward Everett and Daisy Mae (Allard) Richards. After attending elementary school, high school and college, he was admitted into the Nebraska Bar Association in 1939. He and his son, Robert Richards, were partners in a law practice for many years in Chappell. After the death of Robert, Everett continued to actively practice law until 2005.
Everett was elected Deuel County Attorney on January 4, 1941, a position he held until 1956. Bob and Everett were the prosecuting attorneys in the Duane Pope murder trials following the robbery and murder of three persons in Big Springs in 1965.
Everett served in the United States Navy during 1944 until 1945. Everett’s sister, Hazel Kingery, was appointed acting County Attorney until Everett returned from the service.
Everett was married to Frances Stackhouse of Oshkosh, Nebraska, on January 4th, 1928. Frances and Everett had two children, Shirley Beathe of Mesquite, Texas, and Robert, who died in 1998.
Everett was elected Mayor of Chappell in 1968, an office he held continuously for 10 years. He was a past Deuel County Fair King.
Everett was an avid fisherman and spent nearly every weekend at his lake home on Lake McConaughy during the summers. He was a season-ticket holder and avid University of Nebraska football fan that went to Lincoln for many years to their home games.
Everett celebrated his 100th birthday on November 15th of this year and had 15 family members present to help him celebrate.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Shirley and Harold Beathe of Mesquite, Texas; his grandchildren, Brad and Jean Beathe of Plano, Texas; Kellie Kloiber of St. Paul, Minnesota; Greg and Jeannie Richards of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Beth Richards of Maryville, Missouri; and Steve and Mary Richards of Harrison, Arkansas as well as by six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his wonderful caregiver and friend, Arlene Law who took care of him for three and a half years.
Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; his son, Robert; and his parents and sister, Hazel.

Pearl Helen Kayton

1919 - 2008

Pearl Helen Kayton, 88, of Chappell, died early Thursday morning, November 20, 2008, at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2008, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Chappell with Pastor George T. Rahn officiating. Interment will be in the Chappell Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 30, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell.
Memorials may be made to the church, Miller Memorial Care Center or to Memorial Health Center Hospice.
Family and friends may sign the guest book and leave condolences online at .

Pearl Helen Kayton was born in the Weyerts Community, north of Lodgepole, Nebraska on Christmas Day, December 25, 1919 to Fred and Marie Bauer. She was the eighth of 10 children born to the family. Pearl grew up on the farm and attended country school in the Weyerts area. She and her family were active members of the Weyerts Lutheran Church of which her grandfather was a founder. Pearl attended High School in Lodgepole, Nebraska. After High School, she traveled to Lincoln where she attended college for a year and then to the Los Angeles area where she went to a Business College for a short time.
Before her marriage to Ivan Kayton on March 17, 1946, Pearl taught in a little country school near Lodgepole. After the marriage, she and Ivan lived on a farm east of Chappell and raised their four children, Gary, Patricia, Joann, and Kent. Pearl eventually studied accounting and began to work for Fred Schureman at the Ford Garage in Chappell. She later took a job as the Head Bookkeeper for Jim and Dick Cabela when they began their small business in Chappell. She was very happily employed by the Cabela’s for 30 years and enjoyed the phenomenal growth of the business.
She is survived by and loved by those she cherished, son Kent and wife Monica; daughter, Pat and her husband Jim; daughter-in-law, Linda Kayton; and son-in-law, Gary Glinn and his wife Linda; brothers, Herman and his wife Millie, and Lloyd and his wife, Vi. There are 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and dear friends.
Pearl was preceded in death by an infant son, Bruce, her husband, Ivan, two children, Joann and Gary, her parents, and several brothers, Louis, George, Alvin, Ivan, Lavern, and two sisters, Leona and Elzina.

Jerome A. "Jerry" Fehringer, Chappell, Nebraska

1919 - 2008

Jerome A. “Jerry” Fehringer, 89, passed away Saturday evening, November 22, 2008, at Miller Memorial Nursing Home in Chappell. Jerry was a long-time resident of Chappell and will be remembered by many for his community involvement and as the John Deere man.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell with Father Neal Nollette officiating. Interment was at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jerry’s name to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell or to Lions Clubs International Foundation.
Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of the arrangements.
Jerome A. Fehringer was born on September 2, 1919 to John and Clara Fehringer at their farm west of Peetz, Colorado, the second child of 13. He attended school in Peetz and Sidney and graduated from Peetz High School in May, l938. After graduation, Jerry farmed at home with his father and worked at the John Deere store in Peetz.
On Jan. l7, l942, just more than a month after Pearl Harbor, Jerry was sworn in to the U.S. Marine Corps in Denver.
During a military leave in March of 1945 Jerry served as best man at the wedding of his former classmate, Bill Armstrong. At the wedding he met the bridesmaid, Kathleen (Kay) Mohatt, who would later become his wife.
Jerry was honorably discharged from the Marines in November 1945 and came home to Peetz. He worked for local farmers and at the International Machinery Co. in Sterling and later for the John Deere dealership in Sidney.
Jerry and Kay were married in Sidney, Nebraska on September 23, 1948.
In the fall of 1949, the John Deere dealership in Chappell was put up for sale and Jerry met with the owner. That same day, Dale Fenster also made overtures to buy the business. Jerry and Dale wound up buying it together and ran it as partners for the next 26 years. After the Chappell John Deere dealership closed in 1975, Jerry worked as parts manager at Reed-Merrill, Inc. of Julesburg, Colorado for l3 years.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay of Chappell; children, Dan (Kathy) Fehringer of Reston, VA, Dale (Patty) Fehringer of San Francisco, CA, Ray (Deb) Fehringer of Omaha, Anne (Buzz) Williams of Lincoln, Ralph (Paula) Fehringer of Denton, NE, John (Eva) Fehringer of Fremont, CA, Joe (Susan) Fehringer of Lincoln, and Ed Fehringer of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren, William, Eric, Micaela and James Fehringer and Ian Williams; his siblings, Sr. Esther Fehringer of Louisville, KY, Louis (Sophia) Fehringer of Helendale, CA, Irwin Fehringer of Sidney, Mary Ann Hungerford of Alameda, CA, Dorothy Treinen of Sidney, Catherine Zach of Salem, OR, George (Janice) Fehringer of Peetz, CO, Marge (John) Huss of Arvada, CO, Sr. Clara Mae Fehringer of Lexington, KY; John “Jack” (Mary Ann) Fehringer of Loveland, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Philomae Smith; and brother, Clem Fehringer.

Roberta M. Soper

1936 - 2008

Roberta M. Soper, 72, of Big Springs, NE passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday December 7, 2008 in Loveland, CO, at the Medical Center of the Rockies. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday December 10th, 2008 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home in Julesburg, CO, at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Chris Wadle officiating.
“Bert” was born Aug 5 1936 in Bemidji, MN to Burton and Mildred (Krough) Cronk. She and her 2 sisters and brother grew up in Iowa. Roberta graduated high school in 1955 in Rinsted, IA. Elden Benny Soper and Bertie were united in marriage on Oct 14 1956 also in Iowa.

Elden & Roberta moved to Big Springs, NE in 1958 where they raised 3 children Kevin Benny, Kelly Burton, and Kim Renee. At time of her death she was employed with Bosselman Travel Center in Big Springs, where she has been employed for the last 23 years.

Among her hobbies were several craft projects, including bead work, crocheting, and puzzles. Most of all she enjoyed the company of many friends and family.

Roberta is survived by Son Kelly Soper and wife Melanie of Fallen, NV, daughter Kim Lanckriet and husband Fred of Sidney, NE, sister Marilyn Anderson of Fairmont, MN, brother Bill Cronk and wife Pam of Fairmont, MN, Sister Linda Craig and husband Steven of Sioux Falls, SD, eight grandchildren, and Seven great-grandchildren.

Roberta was preceded in death by her husband Elden Benny Soper, Son Kevin Benny Soper, an infant son, infant granddaughter, a nephew, a brother-in-law, and her parents.
Memorials can be made to the Roberta Soper memorial fund C/O Kim Lanckriet 1343 Mission Dr. Sidney, NE 69162. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Agustin Puente, Greeley, Colo

1928 - 2009

Agustin Puente, 80, of Ovid died January 21, 2009 in Greeley, CO. Funeral services were held Friday January 23, 2009 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home with Pastor Felix Reyes officiating. Interment was afterward in the Ovid Cemetery.
Agustin was born in Ramos Arispe, Coah, Mexico on August 28, 1928 to Porfidio Puente and Virginia Salazar. He worked at the great western sugar beat factory in Ovid, CO. Agustin married Micaela Segundo in November of 1958. Agustin enjoyed watching his grandkids play and laugh.
Agustin is survived by daughters Rosa Puente of Ovid, Virginia Cortez and husband Alejandro of Julesburg, Teresa Valencia and husband Raul of Elkhart, Indiana, family members Amanda Jose, Porfidio Huerta, Andrew Maritza, Jose Angel, Juan Fraire, Juanna Valencia, Esmerelda Alvarez, Frankie Goforth & Chris Puente (daughter in-law), Andres Puente & Mikayla Puente of Ovid, and Thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Agustin was preceded in death by wife Maria Micaela Puente, father Porfidio Puente, mother Virginia Salazar, son Andres Puente, and grand daughter Amanda Puente. Jolene C. Olson
Jolene C. Olson, 50, of Sterling, CO passed away January 21, 2009 at her home in Sterling due to complications of pneumonia. Visitation was held at 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM Tuesday January 27, 2009 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home. Rosary will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday January 28th at St. Anthony’s Church in Julesburg, CO before the Mass of Christian Burial. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday January 28th, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Julesburg, CO at 11:00 AM with Father Joseph Tran officiating. Interment will follow at the Sedgwick Cemetery.
Jolene was born in Hay Springs, Nebraska October 3, 1958 the cherished daughter of Harold and Neta Olson. When she was 9 months old, her family moved to Sedgwick, Colorado and she graduated from Revere High School in 1976.
She married in 1979 and lived in Los Angeles, California. Her family moved back to Colorado in 1985 and lived in Littleton. Jolene worked as a nurse during her career and was the Clinical Manager at the Sterling Family Care Clinic and beloved as a key member of their family.
Jolene was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved gardening, sewing, home decorating, and fishing. She treasured her time with her two grandchildren.
Jolene is survived by her three children Cory, Jessica, and Stephani Schneider; grandson Ethan, son of Cory and Perlita Quinones; and grandson Cody, son of Stephani and Matt Jacobson. She is also survived by her mother, Neta Olson; siblings Cheryl Ann Burgess, Francis Olson and wife Alberta, Linda Gleckler and husband Phil, Steve Olson and wife Lainey, Lorraine Shank and husband Joe, Wayne Olson, Jerry Olson and wife Deborah, Sandra Anderson and husband Mark, James Olson and wife Marina, Tena Olson, and Janelle Hately and husband Mark, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Estella Gusman, Lakewood, Colo

1915 - 2009

Estella Gusman, 93, was born on May 12, 1915 in Walsenburg, CO to Jesus and Lucia Gusman. She married Benancio Gusman on August 3, 1936 in Morleon, GTO, Mexico. In October 1937 as a new bride, she returned to the United States.
Estella (Stella as many of you knew her) and her husband Benancio settled in Big Springs, NE. In 1942, then moved to a farm in Chappell, NE. Later they purchased a home and settled in Ovid, CO where Estella spent most of her life. But in February 2000, she moved to Denver, CO, where she spent the remaining years of her life with her daughter Amalia in Lakewood, CO.
She is survived by her sons: Ross Gusman of Ovid, CO, Peter Gusman of Lakewood, CO, daughters Amalia Johnson of Lakewood, CO, Martha Varela of Grand Island, NE, Nancy Ojeda, of El Monte, CA, and Annie Jimenez of North Platte, NE. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday January 27, 2009 at the Assembly of God church in Chappell, NE with Pastor Ray Chavez officiating. Memorials can be made to the Estella Gusman memorial fund C/O Amalia Johnson PO Box 12578 Denver, CO 80212. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James E. Burnside, Colorado Springs

1932 - 2008

James E. Burnside

James E. Burnside was born on March 19, 1932 in Tribune, KS and died December 19, 2008, in Colorado Springs, CO.
He grew up south of Sedgwick and graduated from Sedgwick High School.
Burnside lived with his wife, Judy, on a 3,000-acre ranch in Ellicott, where he loved tending to his cattle. He was a devoted father to his four children, Steve Burnside said, and never missed sporting events - with a few exceptions.
“If two of them had a game on the same night, he wouldn’t go,” Steve Burnside said.

Burnside served as a Navy mechanic on the USS New Jersey toward the end of the Korean War, and later opened up Burnside Electrical near Colorado Springs. He decided to close shop in 1968 to pursue his true love of ranching, his son said.

He is survived by three other children: Bill McAfee of Colorado Springs, Tammy Campbell of Colorado Springs, Susan McAfee-Akers of Ellicott. He had eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral Service was Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Austin Bluffs Community Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Officiating the service was Pastor John Pauls. Pallbearers were Derek Burnside, Chad Burnside, Greg Piano, Kristin Piano, Kimberly Campbell, Kristen Burnside, and Benjamin Campbell.

Interment was at Memorial Gardens in Colorado Springs, CO.

Verlien Kae Bowker, Lincoln, Nebraska

1949 - 2009

Verlien Kae Bowker, 59, passed away Jan. 3, 2009, at St Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln.
Verlien was born on March 16, 1949, in North Platte to Vernon and Colleen Reutzel. She grew up on a farm south of Maxwell. In 1963, her family moved to Pacifica, Calif., where she graduated from Oceana High School. Verlien was active in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, sang in the choir and played the organ for her church and loved to play the piano at high school concerts.
Verlien united in marriage to Richard Lee Reel Jan. 19, 1968. Two children were born to the couple. Verlien moved back to North Platte in 1969 along with her family.
Verlien worked in the medical field for several years in nursing homes and had a fond heart for the elderly. Verlien was currently employed at the Westfield Sun Mart deli. She always had a smile on her face and enjoyed conversing with the customers. Verlien's loving personality shined and her big heart was touched by every one. Verlien loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Verlien was united in marriage to Bob Bowker in 1985, where they made a home in Julesburg, Colo. They lived a few years in Tacoma, Wash., before coming back home to North Platte.
Survivors include her husband, Robert "Bob" Bowker; parents, Vernon and Colleen Reutzel of North Platte; children, Melissa (Reel) Ross and Gustive Reel both of North Platte; step-children, Corinna McGregor of Scottsbluff, Robert Bowker Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla., James (Lisa) Bowker of Gurley, Michelle (Scott) Bernabo of North Platte, Stacy (Anna) Bowker of Sidney; sister, Doris (Doug) Howard of North Platte; brother, Gustive Reutzel of North Platte; sister, Mickie Kniep of Columbus; sister, Paula (Jeff) Yoachim of Bellevue; sister, Theresa (Rick) Davis of North Platte; and brother, Alan Reutzel of Casper, Wyo.; and numerous nieces an nephews. Verlien had 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and a great multitude of friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Mary Thomsen, Charles and Katie Reutzel and mother and father in-law Lloyd and Rosetta Bowker.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to help with medical bills.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Frank Finch III officiating. Burial at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
