Erma Lenore Pulver, Berthoud, formerly of LeRoy
1923 - 2008
Erma Lenore Pulver, 84, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, at Berthoud Living Center in Berthoud after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Memorial services for Erma will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, at the Montrose Christian Church. Inurnment of her ashes will be held at a private family gathering.
Erma was born Aug. 29, 1923, at the homestead of her parents, Oscar McKinley and Alma Meda Marks, in the farming community of LeRoy near Sterling. As the third of three children, she grew up on the farm and graduated from Harding High School in 1941.
Erma attended various colleges, and, after graduating from the University of Denver in 1945, she decided to fulfill her dream of living in the mountains. She moved to Silverton and taught English for one year in the Silverton School. She continued her teaching career for many years as a substitute teacher.
In 1946, she married Harry Daniel Pulver at the Kelly church on the plains of eastern Colorado. They lived in Silverton where Erma kept busy as mom to their first four children. In 1959 they moved from Silverton to Montrose, had another child, settled on their small ranch, and built their home.
Even after the death of her husband Harry in 1989, Erma continued to reside on the ranch and carried on the ranch operations of irrigating and caring for the cattle. In 2004, poor health necessitated a move into the Homestead Assisted Living in Montrose. In 2005, she moved to Clare Bridge Memory Care in Fort Collins, and then to the Berthoud Living Center.
Erma was a 4-H leader for 22 years. She supported young people in their endeavors, and she was a mentor in the Partners program.
In the 1970s Erma became involved in Colorado CattleWomen. She held the local offices of president and secretary and served on the state board as southwest representative for 10 years. The weather was never too bad nor the day too long for Erma to attend a meeting or represent the CattleWomen, and in 1999 she was named an honorary life member. Her efforts to put beef displays, nutritional and cooking facts, and agricultural information before the general public made her name synonymous with agricultural education in her part of the state.
As an officer and/or committee member of the Extension Homemaker Club, Erma was involved with legislative concerns, wrote letters, and met with legislators concerning land use. She helped educate people on water usage and water rights. She also spearheaded the funding and building of the Friendship Pavilion at the Montrose County Fairgrounds.
Montrose Christian Church, where she was a member for 48 years, was a vital part of Erma’s life. She helped start the first home Bible study and later was a significant supporter of Bible Bowl teams. She taught Sunday school and VBS, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, participated in Bible studies (including Women of Worship), and hosted visiting church groups in her home. Because of her love of reading, Erma had an extensive library that she shared with her Bible study group and the ladies of the church.
She was proficient in sewing, tailoring, and needlework of all kinds. Her family has many examples of her beautiful work. Her hobbies also included jigsaw puzzles, cooking, watching hummingbirds, and growing sweet peas. A favorite pastime was hiking and hunting mushrooms in the mountains that she so dearly loved.
Erma is survived by sister, Letha Nantz of Alvin, Texas; children, Marilyn Titus and husband John of Berthoud, Bradley Pulver of Durango, Roxie Davidson of Imperial, Neb., Glade Pulver and wife Eva of Montrose, and Ted Pulver of Montrose; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold Marks; and husband, Harry.

Paul Vernon Kildow, Sterling
1958 - 2008
Paul Vernon Kildow, 50, of Sterling, died Feb. 16, 2008, after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Pioneer Park in Sterling.
He was born Feb. 13, 1958, in Colorado Springs. He moved to Sterling in 1998.
Mr. Kildow will be remembered for his keen intelligence and sharp wit. He was a poet, songwriter, avid gardener and skilled modeler.
He is survived by his brothers, Jeff, Joe, Harold and Phil; and sisters, Nel and D.J.
John Richard Clarkson , Salida, CO
1950 - 2008
John Richard Clarkson, 58, passed away April 21, 2008. Funeral proceedings are Saturday, April 26 at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at the Campo Baptist Church, service at 2:00 p.m., and burial to follow immediately at the Campo Cemetery
with reception back at the Campo Baptist Church.
John was born on Jan. 23, 1950. He graduated from Pritchett High School in 1968 and joined the United States Navy on May 8, 1969. John served his country faithfully aboard the U.S.S. McDonough, until he was honorably discharged on Feb. 23, 1973.
He married the love of his life, Gaylene Sue Houser, on Dec. 21, 1969, and the Lord blessed them with three sons, Christopher David (1974), Cyrus Peter (1975), and Chad Richard (1977).
God called John into the ministry and he took his first pastorate on Aug. 1, 1973 in Delta, Colorado. He served the Lord faithfully as pastor in several locations in Colorado and Missouri for more than 35 years, and has held many different positions within The Church of God.
John attended Trinidad State Junior College, Otero Junior College, and ultimately graduated from South East Missouri State University in December 1982, with B.S. degrees in Social Work and Criminal Justice and minors in many other areas. His love for law enforcement provided many different opportunities, from Naval shore patrol, TSJC police cadet, jailer, sheriff’s deputy, security guard, port of entry and finally with the Colorado Department of Corrections, where he retired as Captain after 26 and one-half years.
Two years ago he chose early retirement after a situation that resulted in his resuscitation while at work. This gave him the opportunity to spend more time with his wife, three boys, and their families.
John loved baseball, where he taught his boys not only to play, but taught them and several other Salida youths to umpire; three of whom went to Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring and then on to umpire professional baseball. He was a large contributor to the Babe Ruth Baseball program in the Salida area, and served as district commissioner for Babe Ruth Baseball for several years.
John enjoyed the outdoors and taught his sons to hunt and fish, how to stand a tent properly and outstanding survival skills. It wasn’t necessarily a love for these things that drove him, but rather a desire to always be with his family.
In everything his children have ever done, he was always their biggest fan. A man of uncompromising conviction and integrity, John loved his Lord, his Church, his Family and his Country. He never met a stranger and considered everyone equals. It would be hard to find someone who gave and loved more than John did. Only the Lord knows the number of lives John has touched.
With all his accomplishments, awards, and accolades, he is remembered most as a wonderful husband, dad, papa, and friend. Recently we heard it best when one of his friends said, “We’re going to miss him. He was, well he was just John.”
He is survived by his wife, Gaylene; his boys, Chris and wife Shanda of Phoenix, Ari., Cyrus and wife Tracy of Akron and Chad of Salida; his grandchildren, Leanna, Sarah, JoHanna, Tayler, Cainan, Trinity, Naomi, Sadie and adopted grandchildren Courtney and Helyn; his brother Dave (Iris) of Akron and numerous other family members.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents; his dad Ralph and his mom Faye.
John, you will be missed by everyone. I love you Pooh, we love you Daddy, we all love you Papa.

Edwin Charles Miller, Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Brush, Colo.
1929 - 2008
Edwin Charles Miller, 78, former Brush resident, died April 21, 2008, in Lincoln, Neb., where he has lived since July 2007. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 603 Custer St. in Brush. The service will conclude at the church. A luncheon reception will follow the memorial service at the church and the family would like to invite all.
Mr. Miller was born June 18, 1929, to John and Amalia Miller in Sterling. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He will be remembered as a farmer, hotel manager, fuel deliveryman, school bus driver, sportsman, and a true friend to all in the community.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Ellen Miller; their children, David Miller and wife Angela of Trenton, Ohio, Kathy Hill and husband Ron of Lincoln, Neb., Chuck Miller and wife Norma and Mark Miller and wife Kathy of Loveland; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Jean Burkholder, and his parents.

Mary Helen Allison, Sterling, Colo.
1933 - 2008
Mary Helen Allison, 74, of Sterling, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, in Sterling. Closed casket services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sterling, with First Counselor in Bishopric Scott Gerlach officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mary Helen was born Aug. 4, 1933, to Fred and Clara (Bass) Jarrett in Iberia, Mo. At the age of 2, her parents moved to Colorado and settled in Merino. Her father was the Union Pacific Railroad agent at the Atwood Depot until it closed in 1970. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1951 and attended Colorado College in Greeley, earning her bachelors and masters degrees in education.
She met and married Richard Lee Allison on June 3, 1956, in Sterling.
Mrs. Allison taught school in Atwood for two years and in the surrounding area until she and Richard moved to Livermore, Calif., where they were both employed by the Livermore Unified School District. Mary Helen and Richard taught there for more than 30 years.
Mary Helen was an outstanding fifth grade teacher and was widely sought after by parents throughout the district to teach their children.
In 1988, Richard and Mary Helen moved back to Sterling after retirement. Mrs. Allison, until her passing, was still an active educator, substitute teaching at the high school as well as home-schooling students.
Mary Helen was active as a member of the community, being a member of the Sterling school board as well as the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was worthy matron two years ago. She was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She is survived by her son, Frederick Allison of Eaton; and grandchildren, Lauren, 18, who is a freshman at the United States Air Force Academy, Carly, 17, Joshua, 15, and Samuel, 12.
Her gift of service and straight-forward outlook on life will be missed.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allison in 2006.

Patrick Schneider, 55, of Iliff, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, in Englewood. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Tennant Funeral Home. Vigil and Rosary will follow at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow celebrating.
Pat was born Sept. 21, 1952, to Jack and Irene (Facchinello) Schneider in Sterling. He graduated from Iliff High School in 1970.
He spent more than 20 years as owner and operator of Schneider Dairy, and was a self-employed farmer and rancher.
On Sept. 22, 1973, he married Sandra K. Zink at St. Catherine’s in Iliff.
Pat enjoyed hunting, family fishing trips and time with his granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Schneider of Iliff; mother, Irene Schneider of Iliff; children, Spencer Schneider and friend Megan Thomas, and Brad Schneider, all of Centennial, and Valerie Richards and husband Justin of Sterling; and special granddaughter Presley Richards.
Pat was preceded in death by his father, Jack Schneider.

Gert "Jerry" H. Marais, Fort Benton, Mont.
1966 - 2008
Gert “Jerry” H. Marais, 42, of Fort Benton, Mont., died Tuesday, April 15, when the firefighting plane he was flying crashed near Fort Carson Army Base. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, at the Agricultural Center in Fort Benton with Pastor Joe Jordan officiating.
Mr. Marais was born Jan. 1, 1966, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He grew up in South Africa and lived there for most of his working life. He had a passion for flying and worked as a pilot in many different places, including Aero Applicators in Sterling.
He moved to Fort Benton in August 2001 with his wife and children. He became involved with fire fighting and also worked on getting his AMP license.
Mr. Marais is survived by his wife, Esme Marais; sons, Chris Marais, Jerry Marais and Nicholas Marais; daughter, Leandra Marais; father, Christoffel “Tol” Marais; mother, Mariette Marais; sister, Ansi Daffie and husband Dries and their children Mariette and Danielle; brother, Jacques Marais and wife Theresa of South Africa and their children Naas, Jacques and Therese; and numerous other family members and friends.

William E. Truitt, Sterling
1922 - 2008
William E. Truitt, 86, of Sterling, passed away Friday, April 18, 2008 in Sterling. A private family inurnment will be held.
Bill was born April 4, 1922, to Helen Brown and William J. Truitt in Sterling. He graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1942 in Boise, Idaho. He was discharged in New Orleans in November 1945 at the rank of Storekeeper First Class.
In Feburary 1948, he married Helen Vandeweghe. She died as the result of an auto accident in February 1975. Bill later married Harriett Sheldon in September 1977.
He served aboard the USS Lyon (AP-71) in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. He was in the invasion of North Africa at Safi, Morocco, and the invasion of Gela, Sicily; Salerno, Italy; and Saint Maxine and San Tropez, southern France. He later received an award from the government of France.
Bill and Harriett traveled the states. Highlights were the reunions of the USS Lyon. They were hosts to the reunion in 1988 at Estes Park.
He owned Truitt Decorating Co., engaged in commercial and industrial paint contracting in the high plains of Colorado and Nebraska. He enjoyed gardening. Bill was a long time member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Elks and a charter member of the World War II Memorial.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett; son, James and wife Vicki of Keller, Texas; daughter, Janelle Dollerschell and husband Joe of Leawood, Kan.; Harriett’s children, Cherylle Wisdom of Broadwater, Neb., Major Wesley Sheldon (retired) and wife Eveyln of Coarse Gold, Calif., Donelle Price and husband Robert of Sterling, Dianne Clark and husband Ron of Wray; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

Lucie Maie Burd Fogg, Kit Carson County

Longtime Kit Carson County resident Lucie Maie Burd Fogg passed away April 16, 2008, at Greeley County Hospital. She was 79 years old. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Love Funeral Home in Burlington. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 21, at Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Peacock officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery in Burlington.
Lucie was born May 18, 1928, to William Burton and Mabel Alice (Eibert) Burd in Kit Carson County, Colo. She was one of five children born to this union. She had one sister and three brothers.
She attended school in Vona, graduating from Vona High School in 1946.
She met Hobert Loyd Fogg and married him on July 23, 1946, in Goodland, Kan. To this union four children were born: William, Loyd, Linda and Vicky.
Lucie had many hobbies she loved to do, such as playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and taking care of her beautiful roses.
She is survived by her children, Loyd and wife Tammy Fogg of Goodland, Linda Tannehill and husband Ken of Sterling, Vicky Tillery and husband Terry of Dumas, Texas; one brother, Orville Burd and wife Katie of Vona; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, William Loyd; one granddaughter, Brandee L. Tannehill; one sister; and two brothers.

Marianna (Heskamp) Sander

Marianna (Heskamp) Sander, 84, of Dodge City, Kan., died Monday, April 14, 2008, in Dodge City. Visitation was held today, April 17, at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the Rev. Ted Skalsky officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery
in Spearville, Kan.
Mrs. Sander was born Oct. 6, 1923, to George and Anna (Demming) Heskamp in Lamar. She was raised in Spearville, Kan. She graduated from Spearville High School, and received her associates degree from Dodge City Community College.
On May 22, 1946, she married William “Bill” Sander in Spearville.
She was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Daughters of Isabella, Altar Society and Senior Friends.
Mrs. Sander is survived by two sons, Bill Sander and wife Judy of Cimarron, Kan., and Dennis Sander and wife Judy of Sterling; one daughter, Anita Wills and husband Art of North Platte, Neb.; one brother, George Heskamp of Spearville; two sisters, Erma Vierthaler of Spearville, and Eloise Hoffman of Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill on Feb. 22, 2001; a son, Danny Sander; and two grandsons, Aaron and Adam Sander.

Marjorie L. (Morris) Wanek, Sterling

Marjorie L. (Morris) Wanek, 84, of Sterling, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in Sterling. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Tennant Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Reed officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Marjorie Lorraine Wanek was born May 25, 1923, to Charles and Gesine (Dreiling) Morris in Randolph, Neb. She received her education in Boone City, Neb.
On April 19, 1939, Marjorie and Walter Wanek were united in marriage in Albion, Neb. She was a homemaker. They farmed together until they moved to Colorado in 1963. They moved to Sterling in 1990.
Marjorie is survived by her husband, Walter; sons, Larry and wife Linda of Palm Springs, Calif., William and wife Janelle of St. Joseph, Mo., and Donald and wife Patricia of Wheat Ridge; sisters, Viola Buettner of Cedar Rapids, Neb., Delores Childs of Torrington, Wyo., Shirley Ann Valles of Columbus, Neb., and Pauline Pelster of Petersburg, Neb.; brothers, Glenn Morris of Albion, Dallas Morris of Norfolk, Neb., and Paul Morris of Albion; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren;
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and John; and sister, Maxine Palmer.
