Cecelia Louise Henry-Gunnels, Artesia, N.M.
1952 - 2007
Cecelia Louise Henry-Gunnels, 54, of Artesia, N.M., died Aug. 20, 2007, in Artesia General Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Young officiating. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 6, 1952, to Russell Henry and Bonnella (McGuire) Henry in Sterling. She graduated from high school in Sterling.
Mrs. Henry-Gunnels worked for Denver Human Services as a trainer, before getting married to Gary Lynn Gunnels on Sept. 5, 2000, in Portales, N.M.
Her hobbies were stained glass, sewing and writing. She loved animals.
She is survived by her husband of the home in Artesia; one daughter, Melinda of Nebraska; and one brother, Harry of Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Henry-Gunnels was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Larry.
Memorial contributions may be made to any animal shelter or animal charity in lieu of flowers.
Lorraine L. Pivonka, Sterling
1923 - 2008
Lorraine L. Pivonka, 84, of Sterling, died May 2, 2008, in Greeley. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today, May 5, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Chaney-Reager, with the Rev. Jay Littlefield officiating. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery
in Stoneham.
Mrs. Pivonka was born Aug. 1, 1923, to Ralph E. and Lois (Osterholdt) Littlefield in New Raymer. She grew up in the Stoneham/New Raymer area, where she attended school and graduated from New Raymer High School.
On Aug. 23, 1942, she married John Pivonka in Sidney, Neb.
She was active in her children’s activities, including being a softball coach. She loved to bowl and was a member of the challengers bowling group in Sterling.
Mrs. Pivonka also helped her husband manage their company, J & L Oil Corporation.
The couple enjoyed going on vacations. A few places they traveled included China, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, Africa and all around the U.S. They also enjoyed visiting Las Vegas.
Mrs. Pivonka is survived by her daughters, Charlene Borders of Coldwater, Miss., and Robin Smith and husband Glenn of Greeley; son, Tim Pivonka of Loveland; sisters, Gerry Van of Greeley and Verlene Carlson of Spring, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Pivonka in 2004; and son, Michael Pivonka.

E.E. "Barney" Watson
1928 - 2008
E.E. “Barney” Watson, 79, of Sterling, died April 29, 2008, in Sterling. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today, May 1, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Chaney-Reager, with the Rev. Mike Kirschbaum officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, with military rites performed by American Legion Post No. 20.
Mr. Watson was born Nov. 12, 1928, to John and Lydia (Pridemore) Watson in Harveyville, Kan. He was raised and attended school in Burlinggame, Kan.
He entered the U.S. Navy in November 1945, and was discharged in October 1947, during World War II. In January 1949, he entered the U.S. Coast Guard, being discharged March 1950. In September 1950, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He served during the Korean War and was discharged August 1954.
On April 17, 1968, he married Helen Sharp in Rapid City, S.D.
Mr. Watson moved to Brush in the 1960s. He lived there until moving to Peetz in 1973. In 1988, he moved to Sterling, where he has resided since.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Watson of Sterling; daughters, Ramona Bethune and husband Steve of Merino and Debi Crow and friend Terry Woods of Glenville, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; three sisters; and daughter, Twila.

Catherine F. Nelson, Greeley, formerly of Peetz
1913 - 2008
Catherine F. Nelson, 94 of Greeley, and formerly of Peetz, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 29, 2008 at the Life Care Center of Greeley. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, and Mass of Christian Burial services at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, with Father Jerry Young and Deacon Ronald Michieli SFO officiating. Both services will be held in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz. Burial will follow in Sidney’s Greenwood Cemetery.
Catherine Frances Nelson was born on July 27, 1913, to Thomas and Theresa (Steyaert) Bowers in Prescott, Ariz. At the age of 10, she, along with her family, moved to Colorado by covered wagon. At the time, they settled on a farm south of Peetz and attended the Highland country school. At the age of 13, Catherine helped in the homes around the community. She enjoyed taking care of the children and later in life talked about her experiences.
In 1936, Catherine married Nels Nelson at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz. During the first years of their married life, Nels and Catherine spent time living in Owl Canyon, where Nels worked in the lumber camps and Catherine cooked for the lumberjacks. She reminisced about the experience and laughed about how they would go dancing on Saturday nights in a small farmhouse, which still stands today.
They farmed west of Sidney, Neb., until 1944, then moved to Peetz. While living in Peetz, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society. In 1991, Nels died, and in 1997, Catherine decided to move to Greeley to be closer to family.
Catherine’s favorite pastime was sewing her own clothes. She also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around her grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Beth Nemechek of Greeley; three sons, Donavon and wife Helen of Arvada, Allen and wife Bernice of Miles City, Mont., and Duane and wife Carol of Rapid City, S.D.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Nels; her parents; two sisters, Theresa and Rosella; and four brothers, Charles, Tom, John and Louis.
Memorial contributions may be made in Catherine’s name to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements.
John "Jack" Milton Hanna III, Sterling
1944 - 2008
John “Jack” Milton Hanna III, 64, of Sterling, died April 25, 2008, in Thornton. A memorial get-together will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at 19462 C.R. 26, Sterling. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date in Seneca, Neb.
Mr. Hanna was born Feb. 10, 1944, to John Milton Hanna II and Maxine (Warner) in Omaha, Neb.
He drove truck most of his life. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, from 1964 to 1968, receiving the National Defense service medal, Vietnam service medal and Vietnam Campaign medal.
When home, Mr. Hanna was surrounded by great lifelong friends who will remember his great sense of humor.
He is survived by his sisters, Jeri Mowry and Jodene Hanna; and niece, Kelli Garcia.
Mr. Hanna is preceded in death by his parents, John Milton Hanna II and Maxine (Warner) Hanna Tolles; and sister, Judy (Tolles) Keller.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Burial and Crematory in Denver.
Wilma Lefine Tanner, Sterling
1913 - 2008
Wilma Lefine Tanner, 95, of Sterling, died April 26, 2008, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Michelle D. Witherspoon officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery
in Fort Collins.
Mrs. Tanner was born Feb. 12, 1913, to William D. and Kizzie (Abbott) Scott in Aurora, Neb. She graduated from high school.
On March 16, 1941, she married Dean H. Tanner in Idaho Springs. They moved to Sterling in 1950.
Mrs. Tanner worked with her husband as a bookkeeper in his tax and accounting business.
She was an elder at First Presbyterian Church, where she also sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.
She was a member of the Sweet Adelines, enjoyed fishing and traveling, gardening and flowers.
Mrs. Tanner is survived by her sister, Iola Scott of San Diego, Calif.; nephews, Gary A. Wilson and wife Karen of Sperryville, Va., and John Tanner and wife Mimi of Dallas, Texas; and nieces, Jan Branham and husband Paul of Greeley and Donna Tanner and husband Al Labran of Colorado Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, in 1990.

Eileen J. Sonnenberg, Sterling
1926 - 2008
Eileen J. Sonnenberg, 81, of Sterling, died April 26, 2008, in Commerce City. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Michelle D. Witherspoon officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
Mrs. Sonnenberg was born June 4, 1926, to Samuel and Anna (Lingle) Maust in Lawrence, Kan. She graduated from high school in Hutchinson, Kan.
She was a homemaker.
On Feb. 11, 1954, she married Byron Sonnenberg in Sterling.
Mrs. Sonnenberg was a member of Orpheus, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Agape, bell choir, bridge clubs and the Cooperating Ministry. She enjoyed music, playing bridge, gardening, dancing and her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Byron Sonnenberg of Sterling; stepson, Steven Engleman of Littleton; daughters, Sandee Warzabluk of Colorado Springs and Joyce Quinn of Commerce City; sons, Mark Sonnenberg of St. Louis, Mo., and Albert Sonnenberg of Boise, Idaho; and nine grandchildren.
